Such an amazing job at creatively blending flavours. We got the set menu which was $80 per person. The menu changes regularly but I'm sure it'd be just as amazing as the one we tried.

đŸ„ŹBanchan - side dishes⠀⠀
🐟Eohwe - raw king fish, picked garlic-scapes & crispy quinoa brown rice⠀⠀
🩐Saewoo Jang - chilli preserved king prawns, cucumber, seaweed, perilla, pearl-barley rice, sesame seeds⠀⠀
🍗Ganjang KFC - korean fried chicken coated in spicy-soy marinade⠀⠀
🍐Yassam - Pickled white radish wraps, cucumber, nashi pear & perilla leaves⠀⠀
🍖Ggori-jjim - Korean style soy braised oxtail, potatoes, broccolini, dates, shiitake, black fungus, brussel sprouts⠀⠀
🐙Moon-eo Dolsotbap - Poached octopus over pearl-barley rice and seaweed in stone hot-pot⠀⠀
🍩Ssuk chocolate ice cream - Mugworts, salted chocolate ganache ice-cream⠀⠀
⠀⠀
We started our meal with an array of classic korean side dishes. The tofu was really tasty. ⠀⠀
⠀⠀
The very first bite of the kingfish impressed me because it was bursting with flavour and spice. I loved the crispy rice.⠀

When we were served the Saewoo Jang, I was in awe of the presentation. The flavours were incredible, I loved the spiciness. ⠀
⠀⠀
As soon as I read the menu, I was excited for the fried chicken. This certainly did not disappoint because it tasted amazing. The crispiness and sauce was impeccable. ⠀⠀
⠀⠀
The most refreshing part of the meal was the yassam. It was an interesting dish because there was a mix of sweetness, sourness and crunchiness. I've never had pear in my dinner.

The oxtail had so much flavour, the seasoning was on point. The stone pot were also really yummy.
⠀⠀
We finished off our meal with ice cream. Mugwort was a new flavour for me, it tasted like tea. I enjoyed the inclusion salted chocolate which added a new texture.

Absolutely delicious. I’ve been meaning to come here for a long time and I think it was even better than I’d expected. A charming family-run restaurant with the parents cooking up a storm in the kitchen and the front of house ably run by the son and daughter-in-law, I love how these dishes, which taste like cosy home-cooking, have been plated and presented in portions and style (on beautiful plates!) that turn it into a fine dining experience. Not a dish that we didn't like, and accompanied by Korean beer: a treat.

Happy to have discovered one of the best new Korean restaurants in Sydney. My wife is Korean and she says it's the most authentic food she's had outside of Korea.

Highly recommend lunch menu and lunch specials!

Also, do yourself a favour and grab a pomegranate ade - delicious!!!

The spicy rice cake dish was the special lunch menu, while the poached octopus was on the main menu list. Nevertheless, both dishes were splendid! The savoury rice cakes and fish cakes was well complemented with the fresh octopus, radish and coriander. My friend and I ordered the two kinds of tea and they were heavenly too! Will definitely come back here again!

Good ambience & service. Tasty food with very reasonable prices. We three ordered four dishes and that is more than enough. Highly recommended.

Modern Korean with traditional flavours, I was lured here for the cabbage pancake and the fried chicken 😂

A minimalistic decor which makes you all Zen'd out, from the tables to the cutlery it's all wood.

Simple Korean food done right and priced fairly.

Calm ambience with great service and refined Korean food. The seaweed and spicy pork belly were the two standouts for me! Korean fried chicken was crispy and came within sticky sauce. The pickles were different from the usual spicy flavours you usually get. Delicious!!

Love this Korean local in Surry Hills. Family run and serves comforting home cooked Korean favourites like bibimbap, cold noodles, KFC and many more

Sáng By Mabasa is a modern Korean restaurant in Surry Hills that is popular and trendy, while also being a small family run restaurant without pretension. The restaurant is run by the family behind Balmain’s Mabasa, and succeeds by getting all the basics, and then some, right.

On first glimpse, Sáng by Mabasa, is a modest and minimalist space. You’ll find it on Fitzroy Street, a busy Surry Hills thoroughfare, that has little else to recommend it.Once you take your place at one of two long tables of eight, or along a narrow bar facing a white-painted wall, you start to notice the details. One wall is covered with a textural arrangement of white painted wood palings. A row of domed copper lights hangs low over the counter seats facing the open kitchen; while hat-shaped copper lights hang over the communal tables. Lining the kitchen counter there’s an almost scientific collection of differently sized pickle jars, where alien-looking lotus root cross-sections float in colourful juice. For Kenny Yong Soo Son and the rest of this family team - his partner Youmee Jeon, and parents, Jin Sun Son and Seung Kee Son, in the kitchen - Sáng is a second generation restaurant. The eight years of experience they cultivated at Mabasa in Balmain is evident both on...

If you’re looking for an intimate date night venue or a cosy gathering with a small group of friends, this is the perfect place. We opted for the $80pp feed me menu and the food was delicious with a good amount per serving. It felt like traditional Korean dishes done really well with an extra edge. Would not hesitate to come back.

Everything was delicious but my favourite are the kingfish and the octopus. They were seasoned perfectly and very fresh. Just down side we didn’t make the booking and have to sit outside ( although there were two seat haven’t taken would be a better experience if we get to sit inside , as the pork rib sauce got cold and became sticky) Overall a very nice experience, high quality food and friendly service

Delicious Korean food in a cute little corner of Surry Hills. Away from the crowds of Crown Street, it's a great place for brunch if you can grab one of the seats outside. Didn't sit inside but can see how it may get busy/cramped at night. The food is delicious! Had the Bibimbap and Pork Belly and they were fresh, full of flavour and generously portioned. You can tell it's not just another Korean takeaway - they have extra details and flavours in the food that makes it worth the trip. Absolutely worth a try if you're in the area.

This is hands down Australia’s Best Korean. Run by a family of champions the food is delicious. So good that when I was there, before I had finished I was already planning to come back. Ten stars out of Five

Hands down, our number one Asian meal in Sydney. And the only reason we got the opportunity to dine at @sangbymabasa was thanks again to our food-loving friend in Australia, Wee Liam (@hungrywolfgrams). Owned and run by a Korean family, it’s dad and mum who does all the cooking while son Kenny (he is also an object designer, maker and metalsmith - @studiokyss) and his wife take care of the front-of-house with a couple of staff. The restaurant appears casual and homely, which is part of its heartwarming charm. But the food looks and tastes much finer than you would guess. Like Wee Liam said, if dad and mum were hidden from sight, one would understandably assume a youngish, hip Korean Chef and his team were behind all the dishes. We had to open a bottle of Jeju’s Hallasan Soju ($20) that night because well, it seemed to pair seamlessly with everything on the menu. Below is the entire list of what we stuffed our faces most happily on: 1. Kimchi Pancake - Only available for lunch, the privilege to savour this deliciousness was due to us being there with Wee Liam who is a regular customer. 2. Cho Muchim ($22) - The poached cuttlefish was springy not rubbery, and lavished in a sweetish-spicy cho gochujang. Red onion, pickled plums and cucumbers enlivened this seafood item even more, rendering it the perfect snack to gobble with alcohol. 3. Dak Moraejip ($15) - Charred chicken gizzards, garlic and fresh green chilli were tumbled in gochugaru and sesame oil to maximum delectability. Forget about stopping once you start. 4. Outer Skirt of Beef - A surprise dish from Kenny and his parents, this particular cut of melt-in-the-mouth meat left us swooning and sighing in bliss. I was convinced it was aged but Kenny said no, the sleeve-shaped piece of beef gets its richer flavour from the cow’s organs that it wraps around. Wow
we learned something new that night. 5. Yangbokkeum ($14) - Stirfried in gochujang and perilla leaves, the tripe was incredibly soft and tasty. 6. Yassam ($16) - A revelation. Hard to imagine cucumber, Asian pear and perilla leaves wrapped in pickled white radish could taste so complex and refreshing all at once. 7. Bossam ($40) - Those thick slices of pork belly were fabulous. I loved the wonderfully unctuous fat-laced skin especially; even more so when I offset it with the accompanying white kimchi, seasoned radish, ssamjang, salted shrimp, wobbly kelp and pickled kai lan for a spectrum of acidity, savoury, umami and crunch. 8. Daegu Tang ($26) - On a cold winter’s night, sipping on hot soup is one of the most comforting things to do. And this restaurant’s version with Murray cod, shiitake mushrooms, Korean watercress, tofu and white radish m, warmed not only our bellies but the cockles of our hearts. 9. Namul Dolsotbap ($28) - A sensational finale showcasing five namul (description from Google: “variety of edible grass or leaves or seasoned herbal dishes made of them”) on rice in a pot. I couldn’t help but notice nearly every table ordered it too. Another awesome night with the one and only @hungrywolfgrams. Thank you so much Wee Liam for taking us here.

Sang by mabasa is the kind of restaurant I love, one run by a family. You have the parents cooking the food in the kitchen and the food is some of the best Korean food I have had in Sydney. This was one of my favourite Dolsot Bibimbap I have had. The rice on the bottom was perfectly crisp and everything was seasoned perfectly.
