I love the watermelon cake here but this time the service was not great. We ordered coffees and Watermelon cake but a staff told us the cake was sold out. And when we checked before leaving we could see one whole watermelon cake was in the showcase. When I asked the staff she told me that is 4 portions. “We were 4 people.” My brother ,his wife, and their girl are here to travel to Sydney and I drove all the way here to let them try this cake.
Service wise I want to give here 1 star but the cake was great.
The cakes at Black Star never fail, but what's so good about this outlet is that there are ample seatings. Bright open space, it's definitely a great place to catch up for some arvo tea. Also there's complimentary soda water on tap! Will definitely be back.
Came here for the first time today. Had a delicious vegan cupcake. Looked delicious and you probably wouldn’t even be able to tell its vegan! Really great how the café has its own complimentary still and sparkling water self-service.
Is it really a trip to Sydney without stopping by at Black Star Pastry? No it isn't. Having thought that I had gone to every single branch of Black Star in Sydney, I was surprised to hear they opened up a new one at Moore Park, which is why Iron Fist and I hit it up right after arriving. I think we may have clashed with some sort of game happening, as there were quite a few people and parking was incredibly hard to come by.
This is a really nice spot for cake and coffee and the best thing about this store compared to their other locations is the space. The dining area to sit and relax is much larger and more comfortable. They also have a wide range of cakes including my favourite strawberry and watermelon cake. Coffee is great too!
Good choice of tea and cakes. Lacks in 'cafe' food but why would you go to a black star cafe for that right? The only complaint I have would be space - everything is quite 'tight'.
Otherwise it's a great place to visit and have a quick bite in a nice neighbourhood.
I’ve been to all the Black Star Pastry and this is my favourite outlet. It is has 2 levels with lots of bright lights coming from the big windows. There are also tables outside for you to enjoy the morning sun.
I don’t really need to brag about their famous Watermelon cake as everybody loves it, although I’m not one of them. 😅 (See my review of the Newtown outlet) So this time I’m going to comment on their Chocolate vegan cupcake. I was actually drawn by the beautiful flowers decorations on top. It looked so pretty & elegant. The taste was excellent! The cream was light & not overly sweet. I’ve tried other cupcakes toppers and they were just full of sugar. The cupcake itself was also light & moist. The first vegan cupcake I’ve ever tried and I was very impressed. 🤗
What a contrast to the original Black Star Pastry in Newtown (0pened in 2008 by Haberfield’s own Christopher Thé)! Rather than a tiny serving space, and probably a line up to try to find somewhere to sit down and have one of their famous pastries, sausage rolls or meat pies, this location in the Entertainment Quarters, once a Lovesac store I believe, is huge, two floors, a very high ceiling, and ample seating and display. Also fun is that next door you can see them at work, in a large working space, with glass windows open for passersby, heading, perhaps like us, to the movies.
Came here on a Tuesday evening at around 4pm. Not very busy, a few families here and there. No big events on at the time.
I love that the new Moore Park store is keeping it classic: Same cakes, same coffee, new vibrant setting. Unlike their other stores, the Moore Park cafe is more open and suited for big crowds and families, the perfect place for a quick snack after or before an event, game, or movie.
I tried their Orange cake with Persian figs for the first time. The cake was super moist and delicious. As usual the Strawberry Watermelon Cake is a winner.
The drinks however were a bit overwhelming. The coffee milkshake was incredibly sweet, not sure if it had any real espresso in it, or if it was just flavoured syrup. I love Black Sesame latte, but with dairy milk it was super rich and overly sweet; not my cup of tea.

This new outlet of Black Star Pastry is big! Located inside EQ, the space is light and airy and opens up on both the street side & market side. It spans 2 modern levels so plenty of seating inside and out. There is a large kitchen out the back of the cafe enclosed by large windows where you can see everything that's going on. Cakes being made and decorated, pies being made, watermelon being cut. Inside the cafe, everything on offer is beautifully displayed - from whole cakes, pies, quiches, pastries, to the infamous watermelon cake to the new Japanese forest cake. On this occasion, we had the relatively new mango cake which was delicious, light & summery. Contrasting to this was a super decadent chocolate cake. Then there was the watermelon cake. Everyone was too eager to tuck in so no photos were taken. Coffee by Little Marionette is nice and well made although I am intrigued to try the Black Sesame latte next time. After so many sweets, I had to get a beef brisket pie to go for later. The inside was super tender and flavoursome. Pastry was lovely also. The pie is not as big as it looks as the pastry puffs up and there is an air pocket inside so don't need to worry about over indulging. Glad to have this new location and looking forward to the next visit already!
Lovely cake and coffee. The watermelon strawberry cake was nice ($9), good texture and flavour.
Their chicken (Japanese) curry pie was truly excellent. One of the best chicken pies I've had, would definitely order it again.
Nice and Clean Cafe, watermelon cakes and chocolate cake are tasty, chocolate is so creamy, $10 /each piece , quite small pieces, but perfect match with coffee. There is a big kitchen at the back of the building to make watermelon cakes. Staffs said all watermelon cakes of whole Sydney delivered from this place.
Unfortunately not that family friendly, very uncomfortable seating (maybe look into some seat cushions people can ask for, as our 4yo didn't want to sit on your seats) and tables are grubby and dirty. A little expensive, though beautiful food and tasty. Good coffee.
Lovely cakes. A couple of vegan options, both of which are delicious. They take orders online, but they need a few days notice.
