Good place to have lunch. Many variety of meat and vege to pick, 4 soup types to choose ( laksa is my favourite). $26/kg so you get around $13-16/bowl for normal lunch dish. Recommend to choose more vege and meat, less fish ball ‘cause it doesnt taste as good. Then drizzling some Peanut sauce and vinegar for better taste.
This is a pretty good place for DIY hot pot bowl. There’s a good range of noodles, meats, fish balls, tofu and vegetables. I like how they offer non-spicy broth options although I did have the laksa broth which a little chilli but still enjoyable. Wait time wasn’t too long but it does get very busy during peak times.
Each time I walked past this place, they always had many people lining up, so it made me curious. Then some weeks ago, I came across this article written by concrete playground and then it was mentioned by my sister last week that they are loving this place in Melbourne right now called Malabang. That was it! I had to try it for myself. The soup was so good! You can get easily carried away with filling up your bowl with many toppings. I ended up with almost a kilo worth of topping and my noodle soup came to $21 but it was worth it.
Hubby had been raving on about this Laksa noodle where you can pick your own ingredients and soup base at Malabang in World Square so I had to check it out. I’m convinced, it’s really nice! You can pick the noodles and ingredients that you like and it’s paid by weight. Lots of choices. Too bad it’s so far away or I’ll be a regular!
If you love malatang but find it too spicy sometimes, then this is the place for you. The broth here is my absolute favourite! With two sauce bars, you are free to flavour your dish as you wish with complete control over how much extra spice goes into your food. Selection includes peanut butter, chilli oil, sesame oil, garlic, Szechuan pepper oil and more!
My favourite cheap lunch place. The tip is to fill up on light weight items such as mushrooms, green veggies and meat slices. I usually add sesame oil for added aroma. The sichuan pepper oil adds an interesting tang/spiciness to it

My fav mala hot pot joint in Sydney. The one that quite similar with the one that I eat in hongkong. The sauce you can choose and mix by yourself and that’s make this place extra point for me. The meat and seafood have many choices too. The price is worth it.
DIY noodles hot pot. 16 different chinese herbs and spices in the broth. No MSG and so many ingredients to pick from. I went a little nuts and this bowl is about 600g but I ate it all. It’s located in the basement of World Square.
Really good casual eatery where you can select your own ingredients, how much you want to eat and the level of spiciness. The dish are charged by weight. There are a lot ingredients to select from. The soup base is very nice and very generous. The dining atmosphere is much cleaner compared to other mala joints.
Good concept, & the 3 of us ended full & satisfied for just $8, $10 & $12 so a good budget eat. Try the broth alone first, it's tasty & savoury with a bit of chilli already. If you want more you can add mix in chilli, szechuen pepper, or sesame oil, mashed garlic, sugar, or peanut butter.
There was plenty of all sorts of meats, including big green prawns, but it all just ends up boiled & grey. However you can put together an interesting noodle & vege soup, with many types of mushrooms, radish, lotus root, etc.
What let things down was that so many choices had run out and weren't refilled (would've loved more spinach & wintermelon). The fresh noodles also ran out, the sprouts were old and turning brown, the cauliflower pieces were old & turning pink - ugh. It was a busy dinner time, but they should have enough staff to keep everything filled up. And throw away the old veges! It makes me wonder how old the meat was, if some of the veges were going off.
Despite all that I really enjoyed eating what I had and I'll go back, but you need to pick your ingredients very carefully. It's a shame to have to deduct points for issues that could easily be fixed.

Always packed at lunch, this unusual pay by weight restaurant is my go to for a naughty treat! The unusual set up can look intimidating but just follow the signage 1,2,3... or join the queue and follow along. Love the smorgasboard of weird and wonderful offerings - beef, pork, fish balls, pig's blood (yes!), tofu, quail's egg, and exotic greens. I usually go for lots of veg for a healthier meal. The sweet potato noodles are delicious!! - smooth and springy texture - gluten reduced if not gluten free. It's easy to get heavy handed and find out only at the cashier but if careful with your selection, you can have a fulfilling meal around the $12 to $15 mark. The soup base likely has MSG but can be overlooked for the experience.
4.4 - Edit: Bring Cash. Always issues with the lady who charges money. She slugs the surcharge no matter what card you use to pay. A great no/ low carb alternative. Huge bowls of yummy soup - Yes, it could use more depth but it can't be too much more flavoursome cos people add in sauces. Signs shows step by step what you need to do to make your meal. Choose Veggies, Noodles and Mains. Portions are in your control. $26/kg. It does take awhile to get your order but they cook it for you perfectly and announce it on the PA. Be aware that you may need to share tables and people dining in can be very loud.
Great Chinese soup dishes. You picked your own ingredients and they will cook it for you. There are plenty of condiments on the side that you can add to your soup by yourself. The price is calculated by the weight, so be aware of your ingredients and don't go overboard, because it is so easy to do so. The ingredients are very fresh and they are quite quick with the refill
I had never eaten malatang before but I’m glad I tried it. The flavours were incredible! Very friendly and helpful service. Fresh food and great price.
