Fresh bread ninja

Who doesn't like fresh bread ?? Especially when it's baked in a traditional Taboon oven. Make sure you get the mix grilled meats and their breads, both goes hand in hand and also ask for chilli sauce for a nice kick.

Vegetarian friendly which helps if you have unique eaters, they are know for tapas so it's mainly for sharing.

Take your tastebuds on a trip to a port of the Eastern Mediterranean without leaving Sydney with the delightful offerings from Port Jaffa, a new Mediterranean tapas bar and grill located at 99 Hall St Bondi Beach. Perfectly nestled in the heart of bustling Bondi, dining here makes you feel like you have been transported to the Mediterranean.

Relax and enjoy, the indoor seating area reflects a casual yet modern ambiance, there's also a nice outdoor seating where you can watch the intriguing mix of Bondi locals and world travellers go by. The pendant and wall lights provide a warm and inviting vibe along with nicely arranged tables and chairs that complement the exposed brick walls. Cooking with a view is also a highlight, you can watch all the action as chef and the team prepare the food.

We were lucky enough to be invited to try out some of the offerings from their Mediterranean influenced menu which consists of Tapas, Taboon Bread, Seafood, Salads, Burgers, Sides, Sweets and a Kids Menu. A number of gluten free and vegetarian dishes are also available. The premises is licensed with a selection of wines, Asahi tap beer and non-alcoholic drinks. The menu says, ‘Sharing is Caring’, so shared plates are encouraged.

The tasting plates came out in stages and for starters, several tapas were served along with warm laffa bread freshly baked in a taboon (clay oven). At Port Jaffa, they only bake their taboon bread as per order, and few things in life are as delightful as freshly baked warm bread.
Creamy and smooth housemade hummus with tender chickpeas was the first tapas we tasted
Followed by scrumptious Artichoke salad on light and refreshing Labneh dip with a touch of olive oil and lemon.

Gorgeously plated, the char-grilled eggplant served with tahini sauce was on point. It was smokey, buttery and the sauce added surprising layers of flavour. We couldn’t help ourselves but going the old school way, cleaning up the plates with laffa bread to get the last possible bit!
Generously seasoned falafel with a crispy exterior and soft interior. The creaminess of the tahini sauce added harmony to these most loved chickpea balls.

Salad tapas were also offered for tasting and the first one was a medley of sweet cherry tomatoes, glossy and vibrant in various colours, served with thinly chopped mint, red onion, olive oil and green chillies which gave a very pleasant flavour twist.
Finely chopped white zucchini with added lemon zest and olive oil was a perfect stand-alone salad, refreshing and cleansing.

The humble cauliflower didn’t disappoint, baked perfectly, it was so tender, slightly nutty in flavour with added tahini and olive oil, it was definitely a made in cauliflower heaven!
Individual tapas is $9.00 each, order 3 tapas for $24 or 5 tapas for $35. Taboon bread if ordered individually is $4.

For main, two equally superb dishes were served both wafting with endless aromas. The Moroccan style fish rissoles $24, were slightly crusted on the outside while the inside was moist and delicious, retaining the flavour of the quality of fish used. The spicy tomato sauce gave a sharp little kick on the palate, served with capsicum, carrot, chickpeas and chopped coriander, make sure you save some bread for this dish!

The flavour of the slow cooked Lamb Sinia was wonderful $32. It was a serving of melt in the mouth lamb with layers of delectable vegetables smothered with warm tahini, a true feel-good generous dish, perfect for sharing.

We finished off with a sweet note of halva parfait $9, milk pudding topped with pomegranate, rose water syrup and roasted pistachio. Lovely yet light, a perfect choice to conclude a great evening.
What a feast! We are a big fan of Mediterranean fare and Port Jaffa serves up one of the most flavoursome array of dishes that we have tasted to date. Ingredients were fresh and bursting with flavour. We would repeat the experience again and again. With casual vibes and friendly service, what more could you ask for. Definitely Port Jaffa is a destination to head for!
