Review Hotel Centennial - Woollahra

Very impressed with the shared duck dish. The skin was cooked to perfection and the meat was succulent. The couches were comfy and there is always attentive friendly staff at hand. Parking is very easy and accessible once you enter you are welcomed with a smile. The price is high end but well worth it, the dessert dishes are just as impressive as the mains.

Lovely ambiance. Just love the room, location and easy parking. The service staff are super attentive and friendly. Food is great. We ordered the lunch menu and it was Gillian, abundant and flavoursome. The menu takes advantage is seasonal produce which we truly appreciated and everything was delightful. Would recommend

I went here for my Godmother’s birthday and it was a wonderful experience! As soon as you walk in you are greeted by a lovely staff member and taken to your seat. The mood is very elegant and romantic as well as quiet so you can actually have a nice conversation. I ordered the salmon for my main and oven cooked prawns for the entree. I can honestly say the food was amazing and had the right ingredients and was full of flavour. There is also a bar, if you would like a little drink. The staff were all incredibly professional and friendly and many of them were French! The food is on the expensive side so you will have to take that into account if you would like to go here. Hotel Centennial is perfect for a romantic date or for a family catch up!

Slow dance cocktails was very nice. Starters were good. Before we finished the starters, they took it away without asking. The Wagyu steak was perfectly cooked. A bit pricy for the size.

Absolute perfection in the apartment. Staff were attentive but not over bearing. The food was absolutely divine and the space elegant and uncluttered. I will definitely be back. Looking forward to trying the ground floor bar/restaurant

I liked the place. It's quite and peaceful. There is a very nice and upmarket restaurant at the back and the front is a very comfortable bar with different sized tables. The service was good too, they don't let you wait there too long. I was about to rate the place 5 stars but since they charged me $24.50 for a glass of rose.. I can't justify it. They will have to deal with 3.

Was our first visit and can we say, you won't be disappointed, Food and the Wine list all outstanding, attention to detail, first class, Service faultless, very friendly staff, highly recommended

Nice meeting room upstairs AKA the apartment and the service associated with them. All the food was quite tasty and properly made and served. The location is quite convenient as well. The bar downstairs is also quite nice and handy, when you need a switch from the business into informal mode. Only problem is the Optus coverage inside, not sure if something could be done about it though

I went to Hotel Centennial yesterday(sat) for lunch. We ate in the restaurant which has very beautiful decor. I had the My Partner and I started with the Wood Oven Squid. Good Serving size but whilst We liked it we didn't really LOVE IT! He then had the Spaghettoni Vongole. He enjoyed the serving size and the meal its self but about half a hr after he was quite ill and was later diagnosed with food poisoning. he hadn't eaten anything else that day so we do think it was the vongole that didn't agree with him. This was definitely disappointing. I myself had the John Dory. Again it was a good size and the fish itself was cooked to perfection but it was VERY LEMONY. We ordered a side salad(average) and the French fries(very nice). The other dining guests had the same. For dessert we had the petit fors which were 2xorange sweet(the other guest liked it - im not a fan of orange sweets myself so I didn't touch it), 2xsmall piece of nougat with raspberry(lovely) and 2xdark chocolate biscuit(not nice and over salted) With the pasta at $39 and the Fish at $45 I don't think I would go back for that. On the way out though we saw the sharing chicken and porch chops and they did look STUNNING. For this restaurant I would recommend the sharing dishes because it is expensive. The decor is lovely and the bar is HUGE(one guy on it though). Very gourmet and fancy. Nice meal but was it worth the money im not quite sure. Boys wear blazers and ladies wear a dress and heels. Good service and Good looking waiters/waitresses :D. The main problems were just the price and the food poisoning.

Good service and lovely flatbread + entrees.

HOWEVER, steak and chips were EXTREMELY SALTY, BARELY EDIBLE. Disgusting for a $60 dish. I can say for sure that Hotel Centennial serves the worst steaks in Sydney.

The duck fat potatoes were over-salted as well. Lay off the salt, guys! If I want to eat salt, I can get a bag at Woolies for $5.

Had a great impromptu date night dinner there on Saturday and can only give full marks for the service and quality of the food. Nice oysters to start and then some epic lamb cutlets for main which were fantastic especially with the bottle of Rockford Shiraz (better priced than many bottleshops in the area!)

I decided to come to Hotel Centennial on a Sunday night, just in time for the weekend special Sunday Roast 😋 I wasn't feeling the option that night so opted for their market fish grilled with burnt butter, grapes, capers and crushed potato. I was nervous it would be too vinegary, but it was actually really nice! Perfectly cooked fish and the sauce was finger-lickin' good. The potatoes seemed a bit dry, but it's only a minor negative.

The dessert was the real highlight though. 'Centennial Waffles' with Zokoko chocolate mousse, salted caramel & white chocolate chip ice cream.....hands down, amazing. 🙌🏼🙌🏼

I did like this place, but the prices were a real killer, and for portion sizes of the mains - just didn't feel value for money unfortunately. The waffles saved this score for me.
Amazing food. The steak is to die for. Excellent wine list. Sunday roast is the best I have had. Very high quality food, and beautiful setting. Book in advance

🚩🚩 @hotelcentennial 🚩🚩
🍴 WAFFLE, ROAST FIGS, VANILLA CREAM AND BUTTERSCOTCH SAUCE 🍴

When Hotel Centennial started doing Brunch it caught my attention...Then I saw their waffles and it REALLY caught my attention. So I read their menu and learnt that $2 from every waffle sold is donated to charity. Then I was impressed. So I ordered the sweet waffles, classic fig and Mascarpone combo with a beautiful almost bitter butterscotch sauce. Smashed it down, before @sydneybrunchcrawler or @_ladyeatsalot_ could get a bite. Then I was satisfied 😍

It’s the mix of refined elegance and casual ambience that makes dining at Hotel Centennial such a pleasant experience. Pub classics are mixed with modern flavours and on-trend foods. I imagine that if the atmosphere of the Hamptons - that luxe US vacation destination - was to be channeled into a restaurant, then it would resemble Hotel Centennial.
Jo Hombsch
The Hotel Centennial is the sort of eatery that encourages you to hang around for a long lunch with family and friends, with the venue has a contemporary and luxe pub feel about it. The menu is filled with simple food which everyone loves. The highlight was the Holmbrae Roast Chicken - can't wait to go back and try it a second time.

Liked it better when Kandy was there!! Long live the pink glittery sordid debauched tales and songs at Kandys in Woollahra.. Good for a beer or two.

Another example of an exceptionally well revamped Sydney institution. Very knowledgable staff, extensive wine list and varied restaurant and bar menu. I'd recommend booking in early as it books out fast.

What a beautiful room. it has always had the most lovely welcoming ambience since its first refurb, however long ago that was and in its new incarnation it still has.
This is my 3rd time eating at the new incarnation and unfortunately it was pretty awful from the beginning.
The menu: could it be more bland, there was nothing on there that I wouldn't cook for myself or my family on a monday night. This might be the point, but it is not why I go out to eat and I unless I feel like eating food worse than I cook myself and I am no kitchen godess, this will be the reason we don't return.
The oysters natural arrived promptly and were devoured with enthusiasm. It then took 45 minutes for the steak and fish and chips to arrive. Of course we were starving. My glass had been empty for at least 15 minutes before I hailed over a waiter to refill it. My darling mum, who is 86 and incredibly good natured had a go, twice! much to our amusement.
The steaks finally arrived, mine was a tad over done. I'll lay out the plate for you. Nice oval plate, smallish under braised looking steak in one corner, egg shaped blob of mash in the other corner, (it was luke warm and dense, like hospital mash) and a small sprinkling of watercress undressed in the middle. Not appealing looking, not appealing tasting. Yet, there was a plus, the Bernaise sauce was good.
My glass got empty again, by the time a refill was offered, it was definitely time to leave.
Oh Yes, it was totally overheated. Every person who entered needed to strip down to their shirtsleeves.
Sorry Centennial you are off our list until we hear other wise.

Since its stylish facelift and the appointment of Justin North as head chef, I've dined at The Centennial on two occasions. I have no idea how often North runs the lunch and dinner service these days - he was there when I visited 6 months ago, but was absent last night, and it showed a little in the cooking.

Gone from that first visit was the balance and the smarts. The chargrilled tiger prawns lacked any hint of char and were served swimming in a bowl of garlic butter (admittedly with some good bread to mop up the juices), and the comfort-sounding cottage pie arrived at the table unnecessarily deconstructed, which won points for inventiveness, but not much else: a deftly constructed faithful version would have offered more satisfaction. The roast of the day, a quality cut of chateaubriand, played things with a straighter bat. As did the chicken kiev. Both dishes deliver on the comfort brief, but they're both essentially pub-grub meals at restaurant prices. But, hey, I guess in Woollahra there's not much distinction between their restaurants and their pubs.

The room is packed with tables of people who all look like they're auditioning for 'The Real Housewives Of Sydney', and the service is workmanlike, but with the occasional bump.

If the experience had left our humours ever so slightly deflated, they were definitely restored with the arrival of desserts. The waffles and the ginger pudding are both real winners, successfully achieving the harmony between technique and comfort that had proved elusive in the mains. I'd return for these two dishes alone.

Posted on May 14, 2015 by Feast Wisely Leave a comment Whenever I’m thinking about feasting ‘out’ there’s usually a little deliberation involved. My mantra of wholesome, nourishing healthy food, overlaid with treats in moderation, means I tend to limit restaurant dinners to once a week. So when I dine out it’s always carefully planned – which brings me to Hotel Centennial in Woollahra. After checking out Hotel Centennial I was seduced by the philosophy of “…a fresh take on modern comfort food in a relaxed environment…” and “…using only high quality seasonal produce and making the most of the crackling wood fire oven….”. This really sounded like my kind of food. Coming from England originally I also have a soft spot for traditional pubs that bring with them a long rich history. This is also where Hotel Centennial comes in – it’s a public house that was originally opened in 1888 to mark the centenary of the founding of Australia. Only recently has the building undergone an extensive and distinctive renovation to bring the interior into the 21 st Century. Stepping into the restaurant, with heaps of lamps, leather and antiques you could almost be walking into one of the homes of the Eastern Suburbs well-to-do folk. Executive Chef Justin North, formerly known for his chefs-hatted Becasse restaurant, heads up the kitchen. A quick glimpse at the menu and you can see why he calls it modern comfort food. The menu follows in the footsteps of many of Sydney’s hottest eateries, with the traditional entrée and mains replaced with everything from snacks, to a selection of wood fired flat breads. On a busy Saturday night the dining room was busy and buzzing, with couples, families with young kids and groups of friends. Nestled in a very comfortable armchair on a cosy table for two myself and my hubby worked our way through as many dishes as our (relatively large) appetites permitted. Here’s a selection of what we enjoyed – don’t get too excited about anything in particular becaus

Tequila Arette not too long ago was a bit of a bartenders back bar favourite. Not locally available, it was one you had to friends incoming from England bring back to Sydney on a flight back; provided that they weren’t already over their personal limits. Now, Mextrade imports these delicious sun soaked drinks; available at good independents bottleshops, Tequila Arette is by Tequila ARETTE de Jalisco founded in 1900s by Orendain family and run by Eduardo and Jaime Orendain since 1976. The Arette range. If you spot the horse on the logo, its where the name comes from – “Arete was a famous horse that won the gold medal in the 1948 London Olympics in Equestrian Jumping. Ridden by General Humberto Mariles, together they became the only double gold medal winners in this discipline.”. It’s a smooth tequila that’s rich on flavour and bold on character. . A custom cocktail by the Hotel Centennial barstaff: Centennial Sunrise – arêtte blanco, pineapple, cilantro, lime, roasted jalapeño grandine. This was delicious and a well rounded easy drinking sunrise that you can picture yourself sipping poolside. It had a nice flora note too. The Tequila Arrete dinner menu was curated by Chef Justin North Tonight and here is Jaime Orendain from Arrete, Justin North and Jorge from Mextrade. Dinner was a food and tequila pairing. Not too many of these but quite wonderful. A play on a Spanner crab roll : devilled spices, ginger & curry leaf – paired with Tequila Arette con blanco

Service on the night was great, the only downside to the space was the sheer amount of noise. You really do have to yell to be heard. One to skip for a romantic evening.

Queen B? Yes, I felt like I was in the upper east side of Manhattan (despite the fact that I have never been, through Gossip Girl, I have lived through the television screen) once I first stepped foot into Hotel Centennial.

My suggestions are Centennial Vineyards for fine dining and wine tasting and The Imperial Hotel for a good old-fashioned pub meal. Or, if you feeling more adventurous, stop by the Illawarra Fly Walk and enjoy a view from above and a stroll among the tree tops. Tip, do not do this hungover, I learnt that the hard way.

This dessert does not have the girly sweetness of Miss World. It has the sultry and majestic beauty of Miss Universe.

Friendly and professional service in a spacious bar area. There's plenty of free street parking and the canapés they served for my birthday function were very good.
Does My Bomb Look Big In This
Event season has started, good and proper. To kick things off, I headed to Hotel Centennial for dinner (cooked by Justin North) with singer/songwriter Josh Pyke and music industry heavyweight, Mark Pope. The event, part of the yearlong series of Asahi Super Dry Silver Sessions, was more than just a good occasion to quaff the popular Japanese beer.

As I peruse the menu, ABC Radio’s Simon Marnie is tucking into three courses of roast pheasant at a neighbouring table. Catching his eye, he ventures over and, with the assurance of a regular, recommends Fig and Caramelised Onion Flatbread ($19) dotted with goat’s curd and lemon thyme. It’s but one way to try out the glowing wood fire oven, which adds to the homely nature of this refurbished pub. Homely if you live in The Hamptons that is - oozing casual, spacious luxury. The kitchen delivers a similar style of modern comfort food to neighbouring Chiswick , but let me tell you, when Executive Chef Justin North writes: “ flavour is the only true hand to guide you ”, it’s no glib aphorism. His dishes – from Shank and Shoulder Shepherd’s Pie ($26) to... ... Wood Roasted Lamb Loin ($36) with rich, juniper pickled blueberries, a tangle of pea sprouts and goat’s curd relief - contain flavour in spades. Green harissa sees Broccoli, Flat Beans and Smoked Almonds ($15) pop like fireworks; and g

The very recently renovated and revamped Hotel Centennial, opposite Centennial Park in Woollahra, has seen former fine dining chef Justin North head up the pub's restaurant kitchen. His high-profile return to the restaurant game has attracted as much media attention as the relaunched posh pub itself, which targets the well-heeled locals with a modern approach to comfort food. The High Table meal at Hotel Centennial, Oxford Street, Woollahra Having not been your average, dingy pub in recent times anyway, Hotel Centennial's new look exudes a luxe casual feel, spanning several large, airy spaces. The main dining room and bar, which will soon serve weekend breakfasts, are light and bright, with leather furniture and modern art upping the comfort factor. Pre-lunch dining room at Hotel Centennial Here, the extensive menu reads of pub classics with a modern touch, joined by Woollahra's must-have salads. The kitchen's grill and wood fired oven is put to good use especially across the mains an

What a fantastic space! Had a great time here with friends on a Sunday lunch. Menu design is very clever and although prices appear very reasonable you can quickly end up spending more than you bargained for and ending up a little surprised upon presentation of the bill. Busy and vibrant atmosphere in the dining room, service was good although we felt a little 'forgotten about' after our mains were delivered. All in all a good experience and will be back..

Interesting!. We were keen to check out this place following the arrival of Justin North, former head of the once high-flying Becasse and chef of the year in 2009. The hotel has undergone a total facelift and have designed it well to give it dimension and warmth.

The front bar looks comfortable and the long communal table inviting. The menu and wine list are very interesting and not overly priced. Their menu has something for everyone, from wood-fired ''flat breads'', to well-judged, contemporary compositions of crisped pork belly teamed with braised octopus. For mains I had the Shepherd's pie that is even richer, with generous nuggets of slow-cooked lamb shank and shoulder under a cloud of buttery mash and the crunch of garlicky toasted breadcrumbs.

The menu is Modern Australian with large dose of Italian and European influence, with seafood and meat offerings. The food was elevated yet tasty. The flavours are deep and alluring, perfectly balanced and well thought out.

They're not overly fancy or special but just delicious! I went here with the wife and was quite impressed by the food in this restaurant/pub. I would certainly recommend this place for lunch or a large group rather then a dinner for two and the price range does take it into the one/two hatted restaurant league.

Wonderful food, wonderful atmosphere. Celebrated my husband's 60th birthday here with the whole family. Couldn't fault the food, the service and the lovely surroundings. Of course the most essential thing in a restaurant are the meal(s) and we all left very impressed. Our compliments to the chefs, we will definitely be back. A "must do" for anyone visiting Sydney.

Never again. First trip to the Centennial was a complete shambles. Think one hour pre first course arriving, another one and a half before the main hit the table. Unfortunately, the food when it finally came was completely disappointing. Pie was so salty it was only half eaten, steak and chips reasonable, not remarkable and pizza is pizza, what more can you really say? Basically below average for the price range and not worth the wait. Very nervous when asked to return with friends, but decided to give it another try. Bad mistake. Again, one hour before the main arrived. Food was even worse (and more expensive) this time round. The waiter informed us that the $38 steak now came with, 'Nothing, because it's not that kind of dining experience'. The problem being, whatever the experience is supposed to be, it's certainly not one worth having.

Great food & service. Unlike many other reviewers mine was a pleasant experience. Great starter of a beef tartar and then a seafood tagliatelle that was brilliant. Good wine top service

Nice venue. Welcoming staff. Good service. Very ordinary and forgettable food. Four of us (frequent diners at the former Centennial) ) dined there yesterday 30/07 evening for the first time since Justin North took over the kitchen. The venue is still great. The staff were as welcoming as ever. And the service was excellent. Sadly, the food was not. 2 serves of King whiting were grossly overcooked; dry cottony and with no flavour. One serve of tuna on mash was brought fully cooked through notwithstanding an express request for it to be " lightly seared only " . As with the whiting no thought of enriching flavours through the use of condiments or spices. Plain beige ! Our 4th diner had the lamb which at least was still pink but no more imagination than with the other dishes. It was poorly prepared home cooking. The deserts were a faint improvement. Overall the menu is a boring let down compared to the previous operator. We expected more of Justin North

Quality food and service. Upon entering this bustling hotel, we were admittedly taken aback by the noise of the joint. Perhaps it was to be expected, considering it was a Saturday evening and the Wallabies were playing.

As we joined our group at the high table, we struggled to hear each other over the noise. Our server promised to cater to our needs throughout the evening, and the night kicked off with drinks.

After a while, the hostess indicated her wish to begin, and the antipasti course was served a short time later. This included prosciutto with a pear chutney (declared delicious by those who tried it, I was prevented by my vegetarianism!), salami plate (likewise popular), and some tasty garlic herb flat bread served with olives and humus on the side (this I enjoyed immensely). After this, entree was served, including broccoli and green beans in a strong-tasting creamy sauce (not particularly to my taste I have to say- I found the flavours personally to be too strong), a tuna noodle salad, and some roasted vegetables with goat's curd (all I could see was roasted beetroot, but this was enough- I normally am not a fan of beetroot, but Hotel Centennial cooked the vegetable to perfection, until it was sweet, chewy and utterly addictive). There was also some chicken confit which I of course was unable to try.
Our entree plates were cleared and new ones were provided for main course. This comprised of Roasted John Dory, lamb shoulder, and chicken (all well received), as well as potato puree (which was simply a very smooth mashed potato- perfectly delectable) and the star of the evening: Cauliflower mac n' cheese. Where do I begin with this dish? The cheese was plentiful, high-quality, and strong-tasting and the pasta stuck together beautifully. The occasional wedge of cauliflower only accentuated and added to the texture of the dish.
Finally, dessert and coffee:
We had the chocolate ale cake with caramelized milk ice cream, and I almost wanted to ask for seconds! The flavour of the ale added a distinct sweet note to the rich cake, reminiscent of caramel, which matched the gelato wonderfully.
We also had the marinated mandarins with strawberries and sorbet, which was nice but nothing to write home about.
The evening was finished with some coffees, and the hot chocolate was nice too.

Keep in mind that you do have to pay a higher price for the quality of the dishes and ingredients, so budgeters beware!

In summary:

The Bad: very busy and noisy, some dishes were not as good as they could be.
The Good: The service was exemplary and very nice- we were attended to all evening and kept in drinks! The food was made of high quality ingredients and the majority were superb in flavour, particularly the cauliflower cheese and the choc ale cake.

Mrs. Dianne Chandler. Time from ordering food to being placed on table over one hour, even desert took over 30 minutes from ordering. Too slow and too noisy, music loud so patrons have to shout to be heard. I live within easy walking distance and looked forward to having a good local restaurant but I will not go back!

DINER FROM SYDNEY. First timer to Hotel Centennial and certainly a first-timer to the loooong table concept - The High Table- and we loved it. My wife and I sat by ourselves at the beginning but quickly met the other like minded diners either side - and before we knew it the food was presented and certainly was impressive. Only $24 and we had a lump of 'melt in your mouth' beef and veg that makes me hungry again as I write this.

We didn't plan too but how could we turn down the an apple tart - again mouth-watering stuff and well worth the visit.

Loved the concept, loved the people and the place - very welcoming and we will be back for more.
thanks,
Tlianos
Reincarnated beatifully, shame about the food. Beautiful ambiance; beautiful people; service needs improvement as does the food. Was expecting substantially better based on Chef's past works but sadly disappointed. Food flat with no wow factor. Will remain busy as it is the 'in' new restaurant with the beautiful people, but I doubt that foodies will give it a second visit.

Wow congratulation on a great venue!0k the food took a while give them more than a week to settle in.great wine list and the beer was cold...pork was choice!!!waffles perfect great job guys we will definitly be back.

Loved the Decor. I recently went to the Centennial and was very impressed!

I loved the decor and thought that the placed looked great. The photography on the walls was a nice touch too.

The food was really good and I would definitely recommend the duck fat potatoes.

I'm sure I'll be back soon.

Now, just one big bar.. The food is good, of course. Worth the wait. Pity we couldn't catch anyone's eye to find out what had happened to our wine as we wanted to drink it with the meal. This loved, dependable, comfortable restaurant is now just one big noisy bar. The five of us sat and shouted at each other just to be heard. Exhausting. How can you sit at a table and eat from a sofa? The people on the chairs were looking down and we were looking up, with the table a bit lower than our chins. The food is good, but it is good in many places. We all agreed that nothing is forever and things do move on. Bye Bye Centennial.

Waited long enough for entree to write a review. Atmosphere, venue and presentation is classy and extremely tastefully designed 10/10
Food - presentation excellent 10/10
Service and wait time could be SIGNIFICANTLY improved 2/10

This is a critique as your customers want you too succeed and to be successful. Just 'nail' the efficiency of your leading bar staff and wait time for meal (1hr was way too long). Apollo and Chiswick have got it right in both departments.

All the best and we will be back to support you.

So good to see it open again. The hotel looks amazing and the food was great. Had a wonderful experience and the staff was so attentive and relaxed. I will be telling people all about it. Bring on the new Hotel Centennial.

Congratulations to everyone!

Sam.

Will go back. I went to the new Hotel Centennial on Fri night after reading about its opening. So interested to see Justin North back in the kitchen. Loved the entrée salads and the waffles! The place was packed...staff seemed to be okay. Might wait another few weeks for a re-visit.

Can't wait to go there again!!!. I went to Centennial last night. It was absolutely amazing, I ordered the Shepard Pie. The lamb was to die for!!
The service was great.. The ambience was relaxed and new fit out is just fantastic. Look forward to getting back there soon.

Can't go past the steak every time I come here, good clean modern Australian pub fare, eastern suburbs style. Service good, and food reliable

Waffles. Got the 'it' factor. Good looking, well heeled set frequent this Hotel and it's fab restaurant for good reason. Food is de-lish! Sardines are a wow for starters. Like the fish. Friends had steak, fish, seafood. Ample sized and well presented meals. Piece de resistance was the HUGE waffle. Thank the Lord we shared that one. Would I come back? In a flash. So should you!
