Had a great impromptu date night dinner there on Saturday and can only give full marks for the service and quality of the food. Nice oysters to start and then some epic lamb cutlets for main which were fantastic especially with the bottle of Rockford Shiraz (better priced than many bottleshops in the area!)

Amazing food. The steak is to die for. Excellent wine list. Sunday roast is the best I have had. Very high quality food, and beautiful setting. Book in advance

🍮 WAFFLE, ROAST FIGS, VANILLA CREAM AND BUTTERSCOTCH SAUCE 🍮

When Hotel Centennial started doing Brunch it caught my attention...Then I saw their waffles and it REALLY caught my attention. So I read their menu and learnt that $2 from every waffle sold is donated to charity. Then I was impressed. So I ordered the sweet waffles, classic fig and Mascarpone combo with a beautiful almost bitter butterscotch sauce. Smashed it down, before @sydneybrunchcrawler or @_ladyeatsalot_ could get a bite. Then I was satisfied 😍

It’s the mix of refined elegance and casual ambience that makes dining at Hotel Centennial such a pleasant experience. Pub classics are mixed with modern flavours and on-trend foods. I imagine that if the atmosphere of the Hamptons - that luxe US vacation destination - was to be channeled into a restaurant, then it would resemble Hotel Centennial.

The Hotel Centennial is the sort of eatery that encourages you to hang around for a long lunch with family and friends, with the venue has a contemporary and luxe pub feel about it. The menu is filled with simple food which everyone loves. The highlight was the Holmbrae Roast Chicken - can't wait to go back and try it a second time.

Another example of an exceptionally well revamped Sydney institution. Very knowledgable staff, extensive wine list and varied restaurant and bar menu. I'd recommend booking in early as it books out fast.

Since its stylish facelift and the appointment of Justin North as head chef, I've dined at The Centennial on two occasions. I have no idea how often North runs the lunch and dinner service these days - he was there when I visited 6 months ago, but was absent last night, and it showed a little in the cooking.

Gone from that first visit was the balance and the smarts. The chargrilled tiger prawns lacked any hint of char and were served swimming in a bowl of garlic butter (admittedly with some good bread to mop up the juices), and the comfort-sounding cottage pie arrived at the table unnecessarily deconstructed, which won points for inventiveness, but not much else: a deftly constructed faithful version would have offered more satisfaction. The roast of the day, a quality cut of chateaubriand, played things with a straighter bat. As did the chicken kiev. Both dishes deliver on the comfort brief, but they're both essentially pub-grub meals at restaurant prices. But, hey, I guess in Woollahra there's not much distinction between their restaurants and their pubs.

The room is packed with tables of people who all look like they're auditioning for 'The Real Housewives Of Sydney', and the service is workmanlike, but with the occasional bump.

If the experience had left our humours ever so slightly deflated, they were definitely restored with the arrival of desserts. The waffles and the ginger pudding are both real winners, successfully achieving the harmony between technique and comfort that had proved elusive in the mains. I'd return for these two dishes alone.

Posted on May 14, 2015 by Feast Wisely Leave a comment Whenever I’m thinking about feasting ‘out’ there’s usually a little deliberation involved. My mantra of wholesome, nourishing healthy food, overlaid with treats in moderation, means I tend to limit restaurant dinners to once a week. So when I dine out it’s always carefully planned – which brings me to Hotel Centennial in Woollahra. After checking out Hotel Centennial I was seduced by the philosophy of “
a fresh take on modern comfort food in a relaxed environment
”  and “
using only high quality seasonal produce and making the most of the crackling wood fire oven
.”. This really sounded like my kind of food. Coming from England originally I also have a soft spot for traditional pubs that bring with them a long rich history. This is also where Hotel Centennial comes in – it’s a public house that was originally opened in 1888 to mark the centenary of the founding of Australia. Only recently has the building undergone an extensive and distinctive renovation to bring the interior into the 21 st Century. Stepping into the restaurant, with heaps of lamps, leather and antiques you could almost be walking into one of the homes of the Eastern Suburbs well-to-do folk. Executive Chef Justin North, formerly known for his chefs-hatted Becasse restaurant, heads up the kitchen. A quick glimpse at the menu and you can see why he calls it modern comfort food. The menu follows in the footsteps of many of Sydney’s hottest eateries, with the traditional entrĂ©e and mains replaced with everything from snacks, to a selection of wood fired flat breads. On a busy Saturday night the dining room was busy and buzzing, with couples, families with young kids and groups of friends. Nestled in a very comfortable armchair on a cosy table for two myself and my hubby worked our way through as many dishes as our (relatively large) appetites permitted. Here’s a selection of what we enjoyed – don’t get too excited about anything in particular becaus

Tequila Arette not too long ago was a bit of a bartenders back bar favourite. Not locally available, it was one you had to friends incoming from England bring back to Sydney on a flight back; provided that they weren’t already over their personal limits. Now, Mextrade imports these delicious sun soaked drinks; available at good independents bottleshops, Tequila Arette is by Tequila ARETTE de Jalisco founded in 1900s by Orendain family and run by Eduardo and Jaime Orendain since 1976. The Arette range. If you spot the horse on the logo, its where the name comes from – “Arete was a famous horse that won the gold medal in the 1948 London Olympics in Equestrian Jumping. Ridden by General Humberto Mariles, together they became the only double gold medal winners in this discipline.”. It’s a smooth tequila that’s rich on flavour and bold on character. . A custom cocktail by the Hotel Centennial barstaff: Centennial Sunrise – arĂȘtte blanco, pineapple, cilantro, lime, roasted jalapeño grandine. This was delicious and a well rounded easy drinking sunrise that you can picture yourself sipping poolside. It had a nice flora note too. The Tequila Arrete dinner menu was curated by Chef Justin North Tonight and here is Jaime Orendain from Arrete, Justin North and Jorge from Mextrade. Dinner was a food and tequila pairing. Not too many of these but quite wonderful. A play on a Spanner crab roll : devilled spices, ginger & curry leaf – paired with Tequila Arette con blanco

Very impressed with the shared duck dish. The skin was cooked to perfection and the meat was succulent. The couches were comfy and there is always attentive friendly staff at hand. Parking is very easy and accessible once you enter you are welcomed with a smile. The price is high end but well worth it, the dessert dishes are just as impressive as the mains.

I went here for my Godmother’s birthday and it was a wonderful experience! As soon as you walk in you are greeted by a lovely staff member and taken to your seat. The mood is very elegant and romantic as well as quiet so you can actually have a nice conversation. I ordered the salmon for my main and oven cooked prawns for the entree. I can honestly say the food was amazing and had the right ingredients and was full of flavour. There is also a bar, if you would like a little drink. The staff were all incredibly professional and friendly and many of them were French! The food is on the expensive side so you will have to take that into account if you would like to go here. Hotel Centennial is perfect for a romantic date or for a family catch up!

Slow dance cocktails was very nice. Starters were good. Before we finished the starters, they took it away without asking. The Wagyu steak was perfectly cooked. A bit pricy for the size.

Absolute perfection in the apartment. Staff were attentive but not over bearing. The food was absolutely divine and the space elegant and uncluttered. I will definitely be back. Looking forward to trying the ground floor bar/restaurant

Nice meeting room upstairs AKA the apartment and the service associated with them. All the food was quite tasty and properly made and served. The location is quite convenient as well. The bar downstairs is also quite nice and handy, when you need a switch from the business into informal mode. Only problem is the Optus coverage inside, not sure if something could be done about it though
