I came here on Wednesday night for the first time & it reignited my love for pho!
My friends & I ordered a plate of BBQ chicken rice paper rolls & all had beef pho.
The rolls were nice, but the star of the show was the pho! The beef was tender - not chewy & the broth was delicious. I tend to add a decent amount of chilli & hoisin which seemed to elevate it to a new level, it was just delicious! Can't wait to go back.
Tucked away in an arcade in Balmain, New Star has the best Pho in Sydney, delicious soup without MSG, lots of meat and big serving. Casual and friendly service. Highly recommended!

A great place for good value and tasty food. It is not posh - it feels like a cafe in a Thai backstreet -but has atmosphere, efficient service and a good menu.
Fast, friendly and cheap! Best vietnamese in Balmain. I have been going here once a week for dinner for years. Try the savoury pancake or braised beef vermicelli.
Always love coming to this place for a fast, reliable & well priced dinner. We shared San Choy Bau ($8.50) - two cups of crisp lettuce with crackly noodles & pork mince; salt & pepper calamari ($16.50)- calamari tossed in chilli, onion flakes, salt & pepper with thinly cut carrots & shallots; large special fried rice ($8).
Can't believe we've only discovered this gem after a year in the neighbourhood. Great taste, value, price, and variety. They also deliver!!
This is the best priced restaurant for quality and portions in the Balmain Peninsula. I cannot stress enough how good New Star is. Its not winning any Michelin hats but it will win your heart and your return business. Get around it.
Amazeballs. First time trying this place got home delivery was quick delicious fresh absolutely devine food highly recommend it....a must try small little shop that you wouldn't see or think to try but do
I’m so excited! Newstar Takeaway is a short stroll from my house and it’s my favourite type of establishment. Cheep, cheerful, and Vietnamese. Newstar Takeaway Pho The broth was quite strong on the beef and less nuanced in flavour, but the Bo Tai was tender and delicious. The serve was massive and I couldn’t get through it. I loved the table trimmings – classic box of tissues, hoisin, soy, pepper and utensils galore. The background music was instrumental – the only missing element was a television or two! Cold rolls / Rice paper rolls I love some tasty cold rolls, though served with the sweet/chilli sauce and not the usual thick, hoisin based sauce. Combination Rice The combination rice was decent but not overly exciting. Tasty pork but was a little dry, nice meat loaf, and the pork skin noodles were a little different to what I’m used to. A nice simple dish. Overall, this was a great meal at a price on par with my favourite pho establishments in Adelaide, but around the corner in Balm
Love this hole in the wall place!! Fast, fresh and friendly, the Thai beef salad is stupidly good (I struggle to order anything else; possibly the best TBS in Sydney?) and the rice paper rolls are always perfect. Great pho and noodle soups too.
This is definitely one you need to add to your regular list if you're a local.
