Lamb ribs and eggplant to die for. Skewers so much better than Crazy Wing - the flavours are amazing!! And for those who want more spice, they have spice shakers which you can use to season your dishes. Prices have increased (and some items removed) on the form you use to order, picture menus still show old menu so the difference is quite obvious. Would still come back though!
I went into Hao's Oriental Grill Bar not really knowing what to expect. I had just finished doing my tax return and wanted to try a restaurant I've never been to around the area. I thought I was going to grill my own food, but soon found out it was already done for me, no biggie!
As soon as I walked in, the restaurant just looked shabby and run down. I can't even sugar coat this, it was like they grabbed a street food place in Asia, and moved it inside. If you're big on hygiene, I'd say it's best to avoid this place. The toilets were in pretty rough shape too. I've been to worse places in Asia so it didn't bother me that much, as long as I don't get food poisoning (so far so good).
The menu is based on primarily skewers and other hot/cold dishes. The skewers is pretty much what most people come here for. They're pretty good value ranging from $1.50 onwards. We got some chicken and lamb skewers, they were very tasty and the meat was tender. We had it with some rice, but if you don't feel like too much carbs then a lot of people just have them on their own.
We were feeling generous after our tax return so decided to splurge on some abalones and scallops. The abalone was the smallest I've ever seen, $6 each can't really complain I guess. They were delicious, but a little on the salty side. I pushed half the sauce off and it was perfect. The foods here are all best enjoyed with a TsingTao beer! Nice place to come, have a beer and skewers, and just chill...
Service was handled by a single waitress. There was a little language barrier. She didn't seem very bright either, but at least she tried. She was smiling and tried to provide some type of service, so I'm not gonna hold this against her. At least she didn't have an attitude. Overall I thought it was an okay place and I didn't mind it at all. As long as you're not a clean freak, or have really high expectations then this place aren't too bad!
This place is amazing ! Suc.... This place is amazing !
Such great good ; skewer heaven .
The chef is excellent at what he does and runs a tight ship
Fun. Went here a while ago with my father was a fun dining experience but lay off the chili next time all the food was pre marinated in chili and was bloody hot
Even vegetarians can rest assured they'll be properly catered for as this delicious chines barbecue. The vinegar salad options are delicious and the jellied fungi salad was something I've never tasted before. Went excellently with the bbq'd tofu.
Hao nice. Mr P and I popped in for dinner midweek and the place was empty. The restaurant looks modern and new from the outside compared to the old and cheap eats look of the other Victoria street restaurants.
Hao's serves skewers and other bits and bobs of meats (very little to no vegies). We tried a variety of skewers such as the lamb, beef and chicken. They also had animal parts skewers (e.g. Chicken heart, liver, etc) which Mr P ordered but I didn't enjoy because of their texture (not to be blamed on Hao's but if you don't like them in general, you're not going to like them skewered). The meat skewers were approx $1.50+, didn't contain much meat and weren't mind blowingly good but they were nicely seasoned and came out nice and hot. The seasoning for each meat didn't seem to vary much but for what it was, I enjoyed it.
My favourite skewer for the night was the twisted bread. It had chives in it with a sweet chilli like sauce. I thought it was delicious! Who wouldn't enjoy carbs with sauce on a stick!?
Defintely wouldn't mind coming back to try the grill one day. The sign outside says they are Melbourne's first oriental grill!
Lamb Ribs. Love it so much!
Good good good!!. Authentic Chinese experience.Love it.... Food is spectacular.. The best grill and finest Chinese BBQ in Melbourne.... Fresh n tasty. We went on weeknite and amazing packed..... . Highly recommended. Service was quick. This establishment uses charcoal rather than gas burners, which makes for a more traditional table-top experience, and no smell by the time we leave.great salads. If you never walked the street of BeiJing, then this is the place for u!had best lamb skewers ever.Dumlings are great too. surely will be back soon.
Very meaty. I'm not much of a food buff but I loved the place so much I had to give it a review. The food there is very authentic, unlike a lot of the westernised chinese restaurants. Highlights for me would definitely be the self cooked dishes on coal (on the tables) which are both fun to cook and delicious to eat! As tempting as it may be, try not ordering too many things from the menu as the servings are quite large (the self cooked meats at least). Can't wait to go back!
Must try the lamb ribs! Unless you love cumin, you may want to ask them to tone it down a bit. Without heating, it's rather cold inside.
One of the best chinese BBQ in melbourne. Down side is their place is too old and need renovation and a little bit pricy
Nice classic Chinese BBQ food. Really tasty

Best bbq beef, dumplings and pippies!
