After an expensive renovation this is my favourite venue on Petrie Terrace. Returning for lunch with The Fork’s 50% Deal, we are able to catch up with Manager Matt, a highly experienced Publican who always puts a smile on my dial. The Menu has been updated recently by the new Head Chef so most of the Indian dishes are off the menu.

* 400g Bass Strait Rib on the Bone ($44) is nicely grilled medium-rare. A tad too much gristle on the steak but it is still a delicious meal. The Garlic Butter Greens are fantastic! 💯 Perhaps I should have ordered Matt’s recommendation, the 300g Riverina Rib Fillet.

* 200g Cape Grim Angus Rump ($21) and Reef Topper ($10) of sautéed Prawns and Calamari is a great balanced meal.

Staff at The Lord Alfred are a shining example of what makes this a great Aussie Pub. On football nights the 5 Bars are swamped. Well done guys!

Came in on a deal- food was so delicious. Was not expecting table service but that’s what we got- the server was really warm and friendly.

My salmon dish was well cooked and delicious - partner enjoyed his steak.

First we started off we a relaxing round of beverages to cool us off on this warm day. She order for both of us a Espresso Martini (her signature) and a crispy refreshing cosmo. Crispy chicken tenders had a great coating from the buttermilk which gave its great crisp, backed up with a nice spicy kick from the cayenne pepper mix.

Like my fellow Zomato foodies, Adam and I were invited to try out the food at Lord Alfred last week. Situated along the corner of Petrie Terrace and Caxton Street near the Barracks, admittedly this is one side of town that I did not often frequent. Heading out to a long lunch as the working year winds down, we arrived at the restaurant at 12pm.

What a beautiful hidden gem. Not what it looks like from the outside even tho l love the exterior as well. I was soo pleasantly surprised with this place. They have gone through some massive renovations and clearly for the better.

I absolutely loved their menu choices with a few indian options which l didn't expect. The Paratha Taco was so amazing and a great start to our night. Our kids enjoyed their meals (cheeseburger and fish and chips) and actually demolished it which is always a good sign that it was delicious for them. My husband got the beef short ribs bbq meats. The beef was soo tender and fell off the bone. He didn't even use a knife. Fork was enough to pull his beef off the ribs. He was so happy with his meal. I got the 200 gm pastured fed eye fillet cooked perfectly medium rare. Finished off with kids ice cream and we got the sticky date pudding. Omg that sticky date pudding was soo morish. I wanted more :)

We were lucky enough to meet Lachie one of the owners of The Lord Alfred. He was soo sweet and lovely with my kids and my kids really warmed up to him as well. Its always a good sign that the place will do great things when the owner or managers take the time out to talk to customers. Overall a very lovely night.

At the risk of dead-naming...Hotel LA is no more. Scrap those (hazy) memories of 90s neon & sticky floors: this historic landmark has regally transitioned into the classically styled Lord Alfred with a fresh new menu of pub classics, shared plates & contemporary seasonal dishes.

Let’s talk tacos. The kind made with light, flakey, buttery paratha pastry. Pulled pork was good...but the chicken became our taco of choice due to its spicy chipotle mayo hit. After these & the loaded fries, we’re already envisaging sharing more boozy snacks with mates or popping in for cheeky pre-movie tacos in the near future.

Mains are substantially sized; plenty of bang for your buck here. Cino’s Dad’s 200g pasture fed eye fillet was skilfully cooked medium as requested & one of the better steaks he’s had - although he wasn’t a fan of the peppercorn sauce. My Atlantic salmon certainly had crispy skin but was overdone for my liking. Crisp, fresh veg accompanied both, along with paris mash for moi. Would have loved salt & pepper available on the table. We enjoyed our mains, no doubt about it, but would be more inclined to return for bar snacks & shared starters. That’s where LA excelled for us.

One of many pubs in the area, LA sets itself apart with various multipurpose spaces over 3 levels & a warmly embraced sense of history & character. Great ambience & feel all round with contagious energy & enthusiasm from staff. Every cent of the half million dollar reno has been well spent, right down to the considered lighting. Matt gave us a tour of the cellar private dining rooms converted from original jailcells which are launching this week. Stunning. Reckon they’d be haunted for sure.

Dining as guests of his lordship was a great experience, feeding an existing curiosity as well as our bellies. Only sorry we haven’t come here sooner...but have already been back since to break in the new ‘royalty’ card. Thanks Lord Alfred.

Dine in on a Wednesday night, knowing that have just renovated, appreciating the new space and renovation. lovely to be served by the manager Matt for the night. ordered pumpkin salad, rump steaks, deep fried calamari and buffalo wings for the 3 of us. no complain to most of the dishes, just my most wanted buffalo wings are pretty dry, but it comes with the lovely blue cheese. overall, we had a great experience in the restaurant.

Came here on a Wednesday evening and were welcomed with warm friendly service. Even our two year old was very well looked after and had an enjoyable time 😊 The dining area is beautifully renovated in a heritage building, giving a unique and relaxed experience. The food is good solid pub fare, with very generous portions - we left very satisfied 👌

Had dinner at this newly renovated bar & dining last night. Sincere service and the hospitality deserves our thumbs up. Ambience is comfortable and functions rooms are very suitable for holding private parties. We have been arranged to a table facing the balcony so we can enjoy the street scenery while we were indulging in our food journey. We only ordered one entrée of vegetarian spring rolls to share and rib-on-the bone to go with seasonal green and green pepper sauce, and eye fillet to go with Alfred chips and Darling Down gravy as the mains. Well, spring roll is surprisingly crispy with ingredients that are juicy and balanced in taste. Quality and portions of both steaks are good and the side dishes of chips and greens are amazingly much better than the mains. If only if the chef has not made the mistake of prepared two dishes of over-cooked steaks to us (we ordered both steaks in med-rare but rib-on-eye was well and eye fillet was med.), only the professional service and suggestion of getting me the Four Pillars Shiraz Gin with soda water & orange deserves full marks for this review. What a shame!
