The clearest broth in Sydney can be found here at Pho Phung. A hidden Pho gem that has been in Cabramatta for many years (probably over 20). Also great if you don't like coriander :D. Their sate that you get on the table is quite delicious and adds to most of the dishes here - do give this place a try.
The pho here is delicious. Broth is dark and rich in flavour whilst being so clear. I enjoy coming here when I’m feeling like a pho that is rich and heavier in flavour. Service is also really fast!
My regular Pho restaurant
Pho Phung is a Vietnamese restaurant offering a variety of noodles served quickly and piping hot if its a soup dish. It is located at the top of the shopping strip of John Street, Cabramatta.
I don't often walk up to this end of John Street, unless I eat at Pho Phung or Tan Viet (personally my favourite place for crispy chicken). This is the only place I enjoy a consistently good bowl of Pho. I've tried many places and no place satisfies my appetite than this place does. The restaurant has been recently renovated from green outdated furniture to more modern furnishings with different shades of brown.
I always order the same thing without fail as Pho is what they do best. I ordered a large bowl of Special beef noodle soup with a lemon soda drink. You can also order a regular sized bowl and just beef Pho. Each bowl of Pho comes with a side of bean sprouts with a variety of Asian mint and lemon. I don't eat the mint nor use the lemon so I requested not to receive them and to have my sprouts cooked.
It wasn't long after placing the order that I received my food. An advantage of eating at Cabramatta is that its fresh and quick, great for people who are time poor. My Pho came out piping hot and was topped with sliced onion and shallots. The broth did not have a layer of oil which I had experienced once and wasn't impressed. My Special beef Pho came with thin rice noodles, a slice of sausage, beef balls, tendon, tripe, sliced beef and fatty sliced beef that was soft and yummy. The broth had the right balance of flavours and was next level yum when chilli sauce and hoisin sauce were added. I always put the bean sprouts in my bowl pushing it to the bottom to further cook.
There is often a jug of complimentary tea, a box of tissues, cutlery and condiments on the table for you to customize the taste of your meal. It takes up half the table but necessary.
Not many places make nice lemon soda drinks and this is one restaurant that does. It was slightly tangy, sweet and refreshing. A nice way to cool the spice in my mouth from the chilli.
Verdict: Order the Special beef Pho if you are more adventurous and lemon soda drink. I'm definitely coming back.
