The Merivale winds, having blown North, South and East, have found their way to the Inner West, this time transforming Enmore’s Queen Victoria Hotel. Gone are the Indiana Jones pinball machine, the pool table and the pokies. Instead you’ll find a variety of taxidermy (!), a baby elephant figure, a Roman statue, and some mighty fine Chinese.
What a change - this place has gone from run of the mill to top drawer. The kitchen has turned Hong Kong street food with a sharing mentality that includes vegetarian options and enough milder stuff for even the kids to enjoy themselves (ours loved the dumplings). Pair that with a choice selection of blues music and a great drinks list that gives attention to local talent (e.g. Willie the Boatman brewery) then top it off with some genuine LOLs from the fortune cookies, and Merivale have scored big time with this refurb. Put it on your list for sure.
Gone all (good) Thai - bargain. The bloke here's been around Newtown for years with various establishments often in pubs. Seems to me this pub isn't on the trend wheel. Best laksa I have eaten for two years. Great balance with that all important depth of flavour - I call it the length of the broth. $12 - I'd expect to pay $18 for that. My colleague was equally immersed in his broth based dish so I didn't bother to ask.
Super dooper and a bargain to boot.
