Best soba noodles, handmade everyday and the price is reasonable. My fav is the Sensai Kinoko soba which is vegan and comes with wild vegetables and mixed mushrooms. Have also had the chicken soba, it comes with yuzu-kosho - a spicy kind of relish with sour yuzu. The duck soba is okay. This is really great takeaway so don't worry about the quality dropping when you don't eat in.
First time having sobs noodles. Was pretty good, was nice and fresh.
We dined in for lunch today at Shimbashi Soba and Sake bar on Smith Street in Fitzroy. This cosy little Japanese venue produce their own soba noodles on sight. We chose a cold and hot soba dish and both were delicious. The cold chicken soba salad had peanuts ginger and subtle chilli in the dressing. The chicken itself was delicate and tender.
My hot chicken soba bowl had a wonderful clear miso broth and came with chicken breast, chicken meatballs, mushrooms and seaweed. Both dishes were generously sized and enjoyable. So many other tasty dishes on the menu including sashimi, don bowls and tempura.... so would happily return again real soon.
We had the $65 banquet last night. Very impressed with the food and value for food.
We have picked the sake pudding for dessert. Very light and fresh, with some citrus gel In the middle giving the pallet a nice clean. Highly recommended.
We also had the Choya sake tasting. Honey, Yuzu and wiskume.
Very Yummy choya sake. My favourite was the YUzu.
My score 3.5 stars. J and I had dinner here on Tue 30th July before checking out the Gertrude St Projections (just found my missing pics in with my G St P vids). Booked through Zomato which was quick and convenient. Interior was pretty nice, place was pretty full. Service good, efficient, helpful. We got the $65 banquet for 2 people.
Shared Salmon poke (small bite) - Salmon cubes, rice crackers, rust coloured smoky paprika-like thin shards of something, spicy oil. Yum!
Shared Nasi Dengaku (small bite) - Zucchini, red capsicum, large eggplant cubes, miso sauce with yuzu around outside. Dish of the night - Super yum!
J had Tempura Soba (main) - Bowl of soba, mild smoky flavour, nori, Asian greens, red capsicum, sweet potato, green beans and eggplant. Tempura prawn, veg and white fish (all good) plus Tempura dipping sauce. Overall, ok, but fairly subdued flavours - maybe we got our hopes up too much.
I had Duck Soba (main) - Soba started a little too al dente but got better part way through, the really smokey broth integrated better halfway through too. Bean curd, inoki, wombok, eggplant and tiny carrot slivers. The duck was hard to eat – a bit tough and hard to chew through (but not dry at least).
Shared 2 scoops Matcha ice-cream (forgot to photo) - A bit icy, not the best Matcha we've had by a long stretch. Syrup and the powdery sprinkle made it more interesting than what it would have been otherwise.
Shared Black sesame panna cotta (forgot to photo) – Interesting serving glass, cream was fluffy, black sesame seeds on top, PC was quite mousse-like, but had really lovely flavour. Quite a small serve.
To drink we shared a glass of Chardonnay $11 (served a bit cold) and Savarro $12 (preferred to Chardy). Plus Red miso beer $13 (the pick of the drinks) and a Asahi Black $10 (ok). The miso beer was much more interesting than the Asahi and had better flavours.
Standout dishes were the Eggplant side, then Salmon side and Panna cotta. Total bill $112.70
Visited couple of times, their freshly made soba was great, the service was nice, would like to come back and try the dinner menu.
The tofu and egg soba was great along with the okonomiyaki skewer. I would recommend this place if your looking for a nice hot bowl of soba. :)
Really happy with this place. Had heard good things, and wanted to try it for a while. So far proabaly my favourite soba place around. It's a 4.5 star. Well worth a try, great sake too
Delish healthy soba noodles in broth on Smith St! Great variety of flavours and feels homely - my personal favourite is the duck Soba. It’s a little pricy to be a regular thing but i find myself coming back here every now and then! 😋
Enjoyed the lunch set with teriyaki salmon and rice with a bowl of warm soba noodle soup. Love the pickles, mash potatoes and fried crisps on the side. Service was very quick and friendly. Can't wait to return.
Fresh hand made Japanese Soba noodles. The noodles were so delicious! Loved the tempura, light and crispy, cooked to perfection. The Red Dragon broth was amazing, full of flavour and the truffle mushrooms were just yum! I want to come back to try all the other different flavours and rice dishes. Great friendly staff and good service. Highly recommend if you’re craving Japanese food!
real good quality soba! whether you like the simple cold soba with dipping sauce or if you like it as a whole set in a bowl - these guys have quality and finesse!
i recommend calling ahead to make a reservation or ensure you show up early!
this place is quite popular so it fills up really quick!
its located on the main street so parking might be harder to find, ensuring you note the parking restrictions too
Generous portions, great prices, simply brilliant food. Gluten free and vegen options. The hand milled, hand made soba, made daily is the best I've had in Melbourne. Will be back...
The recently relocated Shimbashi looks fantastic inside with simplistic yet beautiful decor. The duck soba (only available at Shimbashi Collingwood/Fitzroy) was fully of flavour without overdoing it. I also loved their nasu dengaku (eggplant dish), especially the sauce. Last but not least, the staff are extremely friendly and helpful. Meky even offered me a complimentary green tea drink.
Yum yum, gluten free deliciousness! The food was delightful :D
In terms of accessibility; all the seating area inside is on one smooth, flat surface, but the walkways between chairs is quite narrow, so it would be tricky to navigate in a wheelchair. But there are tables close to the enterance that you could pull up your chair in.
There is a 5cm step in the front doorway to get inside. There are steps to get to the toilets plus the toilet area is used to store baby high chairs so it is a narrow walkway.
The best soba in town. If you like Japanese soba, then this is the place to go. We tried the cold and warm soba both are amazing. Try the spicy one, it won’t disappoint you but if you like fresh taste, cold soba is the way to go.
