The sweetest local french restaurant around!
We didn't set ourselves high expectations going in however, was extremely impressed by the service and food!
There were only two waiters working but they did a great job getting around to each table efficiently.

The garlic bread is a must!!!

The food overall was pretty good, however my eye fillet was cooked to more medium than medium rare.

Esgarcot were a delight, plenty of garlic and quite buttery.

The lamb was lovely!

Definitely would come back, extremely cute little restaurant if you want a local date night experience.

Cozy little restaurant, with Good food and excellent customer service. Will definitely come back again!
Entrees:
Garlic bread ( must try!) the bread is beautifully made, crispy on the outside and soft in the inside. One of the best garlic bread I have had. Whole family loves it so much!
Escargot have good seasoning
Onion soup perfectly seasoned, a mixed texture with the melted cheese, bread and onion! Husband loves the soup!
Duck liver pate with toast, Me and my family loved it!!

Main
Veal with mushroom sauce, loved the sauce but not the meat. Dad ordered medium rare but it came well done
Rack of lamb has great seasoning and the meat was tender but again it was over cooked. I ordered medium rare and it came medium well. A bit too salty with the baked potato
Eye fillets was also good but again over cooked.
Oven baked duck was delicious. Mom loved it. The duck was cooked beautifully, it was tender and juicy.
Scalloped potato and seasonal veggies was beautifully cooked and seasoned

Dessert
Creme bulee crispy top is too thick but the custard is smooth and delicious.
Apple tart was beautifully baked

Amazing traditional French food, it was quite a different experience to all the modern French restaurants in Melbourne. Make sure you try the snails!!

A small restaurant which is quite unassuming from outside so easy to miss from the road. Thanks to carpet inside it doesn't get too noisy even when full, but the hard wooden chairs get a bit uncomfortable after a while and the decor upstairs looks very worn & in need of renovation. But onto the food!

The onion soup for entree was delicious and the snails were apparently good with a strong garlic sauce. Previously I've seen snails already "de-shelled" but these were still intact and came with some nifty little implements to extract them.
The duck a l'orange was lovely, as was the fillet steak which came with some home made pate on top. These were only accompanied by roast potatoes and we would have appreciated the offer of more vegetables as the mains seemed incomplete without these but this wasn't available as it was a set menu for Valentine's Day. The other choices available were seafood for entree and salmon for main which did not appeal to us. There was only one dessert available which was the creme brûlée and this was acceptable and was accompanied by vanilla ice cream. The bread roll was abysmal as it looked like a semi stale supermarket roll from a packet. Tea and coffee were standard and I should mention there is a wide range of expensive wines available, probably too expensive for suburbia but we had a glass of merlot which went well with the meals. Service was efficient and polite.

This was hands-down the best- meat I've had the chance to taste. I had the Filet De Bouef (medium rare), and it was the most tender beef I ever had. Usually I find most beef in restaurants a bit chewy, even when I ask for medium rare. But this was the most tender and melt-in-your-mouth beef I've always hoped to enjoy one day in my life. The red wine sauce was also perfect - not too strong, but still strong enough for you to enjoy the rich, deep flavour, which complements well with the meat. The bacon also helped to add another layer, a salty addition to the already flavoursome meal, and helped to bring all the other flavours to life.

These dishes come with a side of vegetables too. My only feedback would be that I wish we had a bowl each!

My partner had the Veal avec Champignon. It was also very delicious. I only had one bite, but the mushroom sauce was so authentic.

The service is amazing. It is a small restaurant, and the food does take some time to come out. However the waiter we had for the evening definitely knew his stuff - and showed us a bit of what "fine dining" looked like. He was there seeing guests directly from the door when they came in, and walked them out. He laid out napkins, forks and knives with such fine style. He was working alone on the floor the night we visited, and I'm amazed he could put that much effort into every single guest who were dining there.

Tremendous effort, and I hope this quaint restaurant can continue providing fine, homely French cuisine in the southeastern suburbs!

Went first time to celebrate my better half’s birthday. There were four of us for dinner. A pleasant surprise as the food was delicious and service excellent! Ambiance had a Gallic vibe even with French background music! We were full and thoroughly happy by the time we left. Will be back !

The food was very good, i loved the lamb. It was so tender and waste good with the roasted potatoes. I also had the duck, the orange sauce was a bit unique for me but it tasted nice. The waiters seemed nice, and the place being in a low-light environment fitted in well. I did think it was a bit expensive for the price of the food, but overall not bad. 9/10 for me.

Celebrated a birthday at Le Gaulois recently. You wouldn’t have known there was a French restaurant on the street if you weren’t looking for it! The decor felt like a pop up store with a few tables and chairs slapped awkwardly onto a room that is overdue for some updating or renovation. However, the French music and decor did help build abit of a rustic, homely vibe. We had the escargots and garlic bread to start. The escargots didn’t have as much taste or flavor as I expected, but the garlic butter sauce was good. It was nice to have some bread come with it to go with the leftover sauce, however, wouldn’t recommend it. The garlic bread was recommended in a few other reviews and I do agree that it was good, but when they meant 2 pieces it was really 2 small slices. For the mains, we had the orange duck and a beef fillet that was listed under the chef specials. The duck turned out great, with an excellent orange sauce. However, the beef fillet was abit mediocre and we regretted not ordering something more traditionally French instead. For dessert we had the crepe Suzette. As simple as it looks, it tasted amazing and came with a quality scoop of ice cream. We enjoyed the spectacle of having it arrive in a blue flame as well. Service was excellent and attentive, with a single waiter very capably attended to all 3 tables and constantly checking in to see if everything was alright. Main negative for me would be the portion sizing/value. Was abit disappointing to receive my coke in tap form as well, which tasted like sparkling water as there possibly wasn’t adequate syrup added. Would have expected a bottle. Overall, it’s abit mixed for me as I do like the joint but at the price point it is very hard to beat the other options out there with better ambience or portion sizing.

Great delicious 🇨🇵 dinner😋! Full marks to the Chef! 🏆👌👍 Had Escargots de Bourgogne with garlic butter sauce and chopped mushrooms, canard aux noix à l'orange and Cointreau sauce 😋, and crêpe Suzette flambée with vanilla ice cream. Friendly staff and timely service 👍. Best to book well in advance! PS. Forgot to turn off auto flash with crêpe Suzette flambée 🙃

A special birthday night out. The decor is a little dated now, and so was the clientele on the night we went, but that's what made it quiet enough to converse and enjoy the French chansons playing in the background. The service was excellent without fussiness. And the food itself? A smallish menu done impeccably. Overall, a local gem, easily overlooked, but that really would be a shame.
