What can be better than a post tennis drink at this lovely bar? Sitting at the bar with cool wine and nibbles helped along by the obliging and friendly staff continues to be a Melbourne delight. Perhaps some air conditioning might be a useful addition.
MoVida Next Door is the next door to MoVida, yes, I’m serious. We came in on a Wednesday night at 7:45ish and sat on the bar seats. Most seats were taken. I asked for recommendations for Tapas. We had the Miguel, lengua and bocadillo. OMG, loved tapas! My favourite would be the Miguel, which gave me many different tastes in one bite. We had the calamares as our main dish. It was fresh and tasty. The squid ink was a bit salty but could be the best dip with the free served bread. I would say it is one of the best places to have tapas or a small meal or a laidback night.
I keep coming back here because the food is delicious and the service is generally very good. You cannot book here so you need to be a bit patient but I've never had to wait more than a few minutes for a table. This place can get crowded and noisy but if you're Ok with this, it's a place where you get consistently delicious food at reasonable prices.
Flavoursome and beautifully presented food. Lovely ambiance. Attention to detail is excellent. Felt some dishes (octopus) were quite small for the price. The list of specials read by the waiter was much too long, fast and complex. Forgot them immediately. Having these listed on paper would be preferable. Looking forward to returning.
Tucked away on Hosier Lane is this amazing tapas restaurant that offers aS wide variety and they have specials on a board. The grilled octopus and the clams were my favourite
Came here on a whim as it was a last minute decision after work, we must have been super lucky was our party of 5 were able to be seated pretty quickly on a Friday night! I love every dish on the menu and the service was amazing.
Service was quick and the staff was welcoming! Staff know their menu and specials well and how to recommend so we just ordered one special from the board and several tapas. Dishes were bit small but really tasty. Variety of dishes, great for sharing to taste the different unique flavors. Would love to go back for more!
Oldie but a goodie. We rocked up here early anticipating a wait but we only had to wait 5 minutes for a table, sure enough the queue started to build up outside shortly afterwards.
We wanted to start off with a white in which the waitress was very knowledgeable describing the various characteristics to help us with our selection. We later moved onto sangria which was equally refreshing and fruity, perfect for this balmy weather.
They served us with complimentary bread with a side of olive oil and salt. Very crusty and spongy which helped soak up the seasonings. We also ordered half a dozen oysters, small and still retained its liquor prior to it being shucked. Creamy, briny and sour from the lemon, just had some weird aftertaste that I can't place my finger on, the back of my cheeks were tingling.
Shortly after a plate of Jamon Iberico de Bellota comes out with a side of tomato toast. The toast was crunchy and the tomatoes were very tart, whew. The jamon was very finely shaven with not as much fat content as I'd anticipated but the flavours were impactful, I swear I could taste the acorns the pigs were fed. That or it could have been the alcohol talking! I had no problem picking this off.
We also got some bocadillo which were mini sandwiches of ox tongue pastrami, Mahon cheese and aioli. The buns snapped with each bite, with that you get the tender ox tongue and a creaminess from the aioli.
The sardines in olive oil is a must get every time you visit. It comes neatly packed in a can, some Spaniards actually prefer this over fresh. It has to do with the curing, the quality of the produce as well as the kind of olive oil that goes into it. We stack these babies onto some toast and garnish it with some slices of garlic and capers. Simple yet complex. Next time I'll remember to pack my luggage full of canned goods!
Time for vegetables, what better way than to nibble on some padron peppers. Blistered and lightly seasoned with olive oil, vinegar and coarse salt. An initial bite would have you think that you've bitten into 1 in 15 of the spicy ones which was not the case for me, my friend however coped 3 of them. An excellent snack item.
Next up were mejillones which we used seaweed crackers to load up pickled mussels and whipped cod roe. Very pickley yet you could still taste the mussel and sweetness from the cod roe. I can't have too much of this as it was quite intense.
The clams in a pea and parsley sauce was really rich, it was served with bread to mop up the buttery sauce. At $26 it was on the pricier side especially with the amount of clams given, this is more of a dipping dish.
For dessert we got the torrija, surprisingly delicious. The fried brioche made the dish, perfectly crisp and went well with the poached pear, the walnut crumb gave it an extra crunchy texture and the honey saffron ice cream was fragrant and sweet. The espuma de Creama Catalana was an adaption of Crema Catalana which came in a fluffy foam with mint granita, lemon curd and berries on the bottom. A bit of a light dessert and lacked body, I'd prefer an original Crema Catalana any day.
The Movida group is a bit of a Spanish institution and garners a lot of attention given its locality next to Hosier Lane. Now to visit their other restaurants, hopefully there is a large variation in the menu.
Great place for a late lunch (after the lunchtime crowd has dissipated). Good wine list, and a good range of specials. Mussels and churros are especially good.
Went there after the races for more champagne and some tapas. We asked the waitress to bring us whatever she likes, her choices were great. Loved them all. Quick service so we had something in front of us almost as soon as we sat down. Very friendly. Sat us down quickly as well even though it was a busy day. Love having the tapas there as nibbles when on a night out to drink.
Great atmosphere, super yummy food! Highly recommend.
Only lost a point as portions were super small for the price and the pork neck although tender didn't have much flavour.
We ordered a variety of tapas and one of each main, split between 5 adults (as they recommended the mains were designed to share) we found the boys hungry a few hrs later
Great Spanish tapas bar in a picturesque location in Melbourne with amazing street art along the lane right next to Fed Square. I’ve been attending this venue over the past 10 years and service and food have always been consistently good. Although I have to point out that the food used to have a greater variety but this has become more conservative lately. Great bar for a drink and some tapas with friends or a date.
Movida Next Door, the more casual dining venue to the original Movida @MovidaMelb, presents a bustling atmosphere where one can enjoy tapas and a range of larger plates. I started with 4 tapas, a larger plate and then a dessert.
Sangria
Upon the first sip the first thing one can taste is the spices, then fruitiness, and then a lovely strong taste of red wine, this is so tasty, particularly against rich food.
Anchovy - hand filleted Cantabrian artisan anchovy with smoked tomato sorbet on crouton
Once the sorbet is spread across it gives the most delicious pairing with the anchovy, like a burst of freshness from the sea. Wow, fantastic creation.
Miguel - spice saffron chicken escabeche on crouton
A freshness akin to a chicken salad, the chicken has a lovely subtle flavour with a touch of chilli and is very tasty.
Croquette - crispy fried with zucchini & Manchego
Hard to go past these and wow, was this superb. Perfectly golden brown crumb, just the right amount of seasoning, crunchy, delicious rich creamy filling, gooey Manchego, so satisfying.
Bomba - choux pastry filled with duck liver parfait and fresh nectarine
A lovely firm but light choux encases smooth pate, however, the pairing of the nectarine against the rich pate is excellent with the fruit flavour elevating the dish. Really enjoyed this creation particularly as I have a fondness for pastry.
Chocos - Lakes Entrance cuttlefish, marinated & pan fried served with chickpea, mint and tomato salad
Needed something light after the rich pate and this fitted the bill. The cuttlefish has a soft rubbery kind of texture in terms of mouth feel but is tender and well prepared. With a good squeeze of lemon, citrus and seafood are an excellent combination and along with the chickpeas and vinaigrette is tasty.
Churros with drinking chocolate
Hard to go past a classic in a Spanish restaurant. I've eaten a lot of churros but these were light and didn't leave one felling heavy or bloated. Crispy on the outside, soft in the middle, against a smooth chocolate sauce but, it too, is light and can be drunk without feeling sick as it isn't rich but the chocolate flavour just shines through.
Excellent dining experience, flavoursome dishes, lovely atmosphere, comfortably satisfied.
