I cannot rave about Lamb on Chapel (LOC) enough.
It was initially recommended to me by a Greek girlfriend after I told her about a shabby experience at another local establishment; she's a real foodie (like all of my Greek friends!) She said 'once you've been to Lamb on Chapel, you'll NEVER eat lamb anywhere else.
She was right! Efkaristo, Panagiota Koukla! (Oh, how I wish I was Greek!)
I have been coming here for my weekly souvlakia 'fix' for years and it's always first-rate.
LOC has been in business for 24 years. The custom made lamb spit is a feature in the window and the aroma can be smelled in Chapel St.
Gregorios, the late father of owner Kon was a regular fixture of LOC until he passed away in early 2020 .
He was a cheeky, lovely octogenarian with a wonderful sense of humour and really made the place feel like home. He is sadly missed,
Owner Kon has a welcoming smile for everyone and is truly proud of his delicious, tender, juicy, beautifully cooked lamb. All of the food choices are great, but I only ever have the lamb.
Because it's the BEST in Melbourne!
This writer has a deep appreciation of Greek cuisine and everything on the menu is freshly prepared daily.
The salads are bright and crisp, the dips are tangy and fresh (try the roasted capsicum... nom nom nom!) And the tzatziki? Divine!
The pita bread is soft and moreish and the cakes are truly wonderful. The galaktoboureko (Greek custard cake) is To Die For, as is the baklava. Fresh, fresh, fresh!
And if you want traditional Greek coffee, this is the place.
As the time of writing, Covid19 means LOC is takeaway only, but please, support this lovely Chapel Street Institution.
It's a tiny, unassuming cafe about a block from Commercial Road, there's plenty of free parking on Chapel Street and it's open late (but call during CV19 for hours if you're unsure).
I love this place.
I love Kon, and all his staff and I really love the food.
Love the lamb souvlaki here. That pita is nice and soft . Food full of flavour.
Wow. Had always heard good things about Lamb on Chapel, and finally managed to drop by for lunch one Sunday. As soon as we walked in, our eyes went to the huge skewers of meat cooking over coals.
We ordered the lamb special and chicken special (making one a meal deal to get chips and a drink to share as well). Service was fast and attentive; the gentleman behind the counter was so kind.
Just as we’d heard, the souvlaki was amazing. Even the pita bread was well-toasted and tasty. It was packed full to the brim with delicious, flavourful, perfectly cooked coal-charred meat, fresh vegetables and sauce which brought everything together... my partner and I almost had to roll out of the restaurant.
Can definitely see myself craving this in the future, and coming back regularly!
