Review:
We got to experience a lot of Wayo's food because we were sharing dishes between the 4 of us! The stand out for me (and what I'd recommend) is the grilled mushroom, the chicken nanban and tofu steak.
The grilled mushroom is marinated in this lovely garlic miso which gives a very aromatic, memorable taste.
Chicken nanban reminds me of my highschool days and the sauce is very reminiscent. Succulent, juicy chicken is always an A+ for me!
Tofu steak had soft tofu that simply melted in my mouth. For those who favour meat, this may not appeal but I personally enjoyed the juxtaposition between the heavier teriyaki sauce and the soft touch of the tofu.
The service was pretty good and they were so helpful in recommending dishes. Friendly and the dishes were brought out in relatively timely pace. Even when we added on the hamburger steak, they were accommodating and brought it out fast!
Food quality is good, presentation is good, service is good. Can’t flaw them!
My score 3.75+ stars (avge of 2 reviews). J and I had lunch here on Tue 13th of Aug. Service was nice, gentle and efficient. There were cooking smells evident (unlike first visit).
J had the Tofu steak lunch deal ($12 inc miso soup) – 2 x silken tofu steaks, crispish outside and lots of teriyaki sauce. Salad and rice nice. Seemed more tofu than in the Don (see below).
I had the Chicken nanban lunch deal ($15 inc miso soup) - Nanban sauce was very nice and made the chicken moist (although there was some crisp coating). Mayo was good and a generous serve. Burdock root nice. Salad greens plus capsicum, a little bit dry if no actual dressing on it (thick Ponzu gelee). Nice amount of rice, good that it was separate.
We both enjoyed our meals a lot more than the first visit, and the soup was really good (again), seemed thicker that the last time and had more carrot.
We had Matcha again and it was the same as last time (yum – see below).
10 months ago. Casual setting, nice jazz in the background - a bit cramped at the front (tables are high enough, but a bit narrow), more room at the back. Place wasn’t busy - female waiter was nice and polite.
Food > Miso soup was mild, but very good – overall, one of the better miso soups we’ve had.
J’s Tofu Don had silken tofu and plenty of (very) sweet teriyaki sauce (slightly caramelised on the top of the tofu). It had plenty of rice and really nice pickled ginger, but J thought it didn’t have anywhere near enough salad greens. The Tofu Don and Miso soup lunch deal at $9.50 is great value though!
My Teriyaki chicken had plenty of rice, but also only a small amount of salad greens. There was plenty of moist chicken, sauce glaze and occasionally a yummy crispy bit of skin. The poached egg yolk was barely cooked and the white virtually uncooked, so I folded it through the hot rice and it made a nice sauce.
We’re “matchaophiles”, so finished off sharing 1 generous scoop of Matcha ice cream – sooooo intense, but very sweet. Still - a bargain, and if they cut back the sugar it would be top notch…
