Sir And Mlady Dine Out

Yang & Co is a small place that forms part of the growing restaurant hub of Castlecrag. We were in the area without any plans and decided to drop in for a quick bite. It’s an interesting entrance - because it doesn’t look like an entry. It’s not on the footpath but rather through what looks more like a service a doorway. Don’t be put off - it’s worth finding and going inside. They serve modern Asian food in a cosy environment.
We’ve been impressed recently by the foodie hub that Castlecrag is turning into on the lower North Shore with a number of trendy restaurants, including Yang & Co, a contemporary Malaysian/Singaporean eatery that serves up favourites with a modern twist. It was bustling on a Friday night when we turned up without a booking, but they managed to seat us in the cosy bar area where we could smell the tasty aromas wafting out of the kitchen. While we waited for our food, we started off with a couple of glasses of vermouth – a gorgeous Rose Vermouth and a sweet White Vermouth from Germany that we enjoyed as a refreshing start to the meal.
We’re back at Yang & Co, almost a year later. It is a little far, clocking in just over an hour from where I live via public transport. But on this occasion, we’ve all piled into Jeff’s car, like the happy family we are, for our over the bridge road trip. The adjective ‘unassuming’ is as exhausting to read as it is to spell out, from overuse, but that’s really what Yang & Co is. There is nothing in its name, in a side door that serves as its main door, in its locale, that would indicate Asian food of this calibre is being fished out of the humble neighbourhood of Castlecrag. I say ‘Asian’ not in ignorance but because Alex, chef and proprietor of Yang & Co, has borrowed influences from his Malaysian heritage and also from across various ponds.
