Had lemon tart and red velvet slices and omg now I can’t go back to supermarket cake anymore. You could taste the good ingredients and careful thoughts they put in there cake and it’s decent sized too. Would come back for sure.
It’s too hard deciding on what to order because everything looks amazing.
Shop very extremely small & very busy. I’ve had to line up every time I’ve been but it’s worth the wait.

Best cake in town! Small cosy bakery but definitely a Melbourne must try :) Grabbed Red Velvet Cake. Absolutely amazing cake - light and fluffy. It looks and tastes like something your grandma would bake for you. It's not overly sweet and size is pretty big considering the price. Enjoyed every bite :)
The home of amazing homemade cakes in North Melbourne. This cafe is definitely not a stranger to Victorians as people would travel all the way just to purchase some cakes
There is always a different variety of cakes available and its so exciting everytime i pop in store. This time i got to try their chocolate cake and i must say the flavours are amazing and the balance is good. Its not too sweet and the texture is nice
Go in early to get a good variety as they do tend to sell out quickly
My favourite hidden cake shop which makes the BEST Banoffee Pie ever!! Beatrix Bakes is a very small quaint shop that serves up the most delicious cakes ever! A must visit!
🔆LOCATION🔆
Beatrix Bakes is located corner of Queensberry and Lothian Streets. This little cake shop is soo popular they always sell out. Recommend to order your cakes in advance to avoid disappointment.
🔆SERVICE🔆
Service is always super friendly and helpful. They have separate queue for pre-orders and walk-in’s. Everything is very orderly. Their display cabinet is nothing fancy, it’s all about their yummy cakes!
🔆MENU/PRICE🔆
Chocolate mousse tart, $9.00
(with strawberry preserve & peanut crust)
Banofee Pie, $13.50
(banana, passionfruit, caramel custard, whipped sour cream and dark chocolate rubble)
🔆VERDICT🔆
High praises for the Banoffee Pie. It tastes soo good and very generous in size. I can eat this all by myself but it can easily be shared between two people.
I like that it is not overly sweet and is a modification of the original British version which to me is way too sweet for my liking. The caramel custard is super light and love how passionfruit is added to cut through and balance the freshness of the banana and the cream! Love the dark chocolate rubble topping! Soo delicious!! Highly recommend you visit Beatrix Bakes for the Banofee Pie.
Its my fist time trying the chocolate mousse tart! I really like the peanut biscuit crust, and the dark chocolate cake is soo tasty. I didn’t like t he strawberry preserve, it was way too sweet! If that was omitted I thinkit would be a perfect Choc Tart!
I finally managed to try Beatrix during covid lockdown, which worked out for the best because I was able to preorder and skip the line! My friend had been raving about Beatrix for years, and I definitely wasn’t disappointed. I had the special cauliflower cheese pie, which was out of this world! And then I had the much loved cakes...red velvet, choc layer, banofee pie and poached pear brown butter tart. I loved that the cakes weren’t sickly sweet, and also that they had a lovely homely feel; not sore bought/super fancy vibes. It was more like comfort food, in the best way! Will definitely be returning now.
I can’t believe I’d never tried Beatrix til last week, when a quarantine cake craving saw me driving to North Melbourne. I pre ordered a slice of the famous chocolate sour cream layer cake plus a special brow butter, hazelnut and quince tart ($17 total). The cake was not as sour as I was expecting but pleasantly less sweet than a standard chocolate cake and so moist. I like a rich cake but this one didn’t leave me in desperate need of water like many others do. While the cake was good, the tart was a standout. It was a perfect blend of sweet, buttery biscuit and slightly tart roasted quince and crunchy hazelnuts. I wish it was a regular menu item because I could eat it again and again.
The base of the red velvet ($9) is stunning, managing to be delicate and soft yet dense and richly flavoured. It really is unlike any other cake I’ve tried. The vanilla buttercream is silky and light but I would have preferred even a little tang of cream cheese as I found the cake to become a bit monotonous without it. Still one of the best cakes I've ever eaten though.
The smoky choc chip cookie ($3) was nice but just alright. The smoky flavour was subtle.
Very keen to return and try everything else.
Usually don't have much of a sweet tooth, but if presented with the option on whether to pay Beatrix a visit my answer would always be a yes!
Cake selection changes frequently, service is always clear and friendly. Love that their cakes are not overly sweet, coffee is decent too. Their savoury items are scrumptious as well.
Absolutely love the stance they're taking with no takeaway cups on site, frequently see customers bring their own containers for takeaway goodies. A great example that it's not impossible to thrive as a business while cutting down on single use wastage.
Small place but big heart. The cakes were nice and fresh. I had the carrot and hazelnut cake. Probably too sweet but that’s just my taste. Still a good cake. The coffee was probably the only dowside. Strong in flavour but didnt seem hot enough. The service from staff was exceptional. Everyone smiled and was very friendly. Overall, nice place for what it has to offer.
Still cannot believe Beatrix is closing permanently in a few days. It is indeed one of the best bakeries in Melbourne. Their cakes are absolutely beautiful. Simple, homey but executed perfectly. Just like the cakes my grandma bakes for me. Their banoffee pie is definitely unbeatable. I’m going to get their cookbook and do a copycat version. Thank you so much for bringing all these lovely goodies to Melbournians.
Cute little bakery selling a variety of delicious treats. Mainly take away. Would have tried everything if we didn't have to fly that day. Highly recommend a visit.
Moroccan spiced chocolate caramel tart was new and divine. Well spiced and reminded me of eating gingerbread. Rich chocolate tart couldn't be any better.
Lemon curd tart - my friend's favourite. Tangy, sweet and just the right amount of tart shell.
Almond chocolate cookie was super chunky 😍. Crispy on the outside. Chewy on the inside. Perfect for my liking.
Beatrix offered a variety of freshly baked cakes that were moist and delicious. They were rather dense but I suppose that was how traditional sponge was. I loved how you could find classic baked goods like banana cake, carrot cake, cheesecake, chocolate cake - no mirror glazing, no perfectly round moulded chocolate shells, no mousse-based creations - only real cakes here. We tried their ciabatta sandwiches and they were also very flavourful. The only downside was there were limited seatings available.
Beatrix is known for their cakes and tarts, but recently I found out that their pastries are also phenomenal. They are comparable to the other famous croissant places in Melbourne, certainly better than the much hyped up Lune! And that speaks volumes! The Escargot was amazing - light, flaky, buttery, fragrant and so much flavour! The prosciutto, basil and tomato danish were also SO GOOD!
Varied and interesting daily menu. I ordered the Peach Alabama, Potato Brioche Donut and chocolate cake. I'll most definitely be back to see what other amazing treats Beatrix whips up.
Found the cookbook in a bookstore and wanted to see the store. I flew into Melbourne recently and had the opportunity to go there. I wasn’t disappointed. My cousin and I lined up (worth the wait) to purchase a medley of things to try.
Next time I’m down I’m ordering the Peach cake…
Their menu is different every day, so I recommend you to check Instagram. Especially, it is sold out early on weekends, so I recommend you to go in time for the opening time. I'm honestly not a big fan of the Sweets but Red Velvet cake is the best in the world.
GREAT CAKES AND FRIENDLY SERVICE
This place is so popular that there is a line up out front before the shop opens!
Great quality cakes and excellent customer service.
Not taking advance orders for cakes right now because of COVID but I'm sure they will do once COVID is behind us.
Good gluten free options.
Really like that they provide you with a little "how to care for your cake" booklet - how to store, when to take out to bring to room temp etc.
