A must try Uyghur halal dishes. Food is fresh and delicious but can be spicy for people intolerant towards hot spicy food.

My Rating: 4.5

I was introduced to Ughur food by my Kyrgyz friend who loves to visit Dolan Ughur and claims its very authentic. I had never really tried Ughur and the closest I could probably relate to is Mongolian cuisine when I visited Mongolia years ago. Ughur cuisine is mainly lamb based so be prepared if you’re wanting to eat a variety of lamb meat.

🔆LOCATION🔆

Dolan Urghur is situated on Little Lonsdale Street, near the corner of Russell Street. It’s a small restaurant and it’s really not obvious and can easily walk past it without knowing. The place looks really dated with old paintings and Urghur carpet hanging from the walls. I suppose its keeping to its traditional

🔆SERVICE🔆
Very friendly and down to earth service from the staff. It was very homely type atmosphere and quite relaxed which was nice.

🔆MENU/PRICE🔆

Stir fried whole chicken pieces with potatoes and capsicum, $29.80
(special homemade sauce and noodles)

Cucumber, tomato and onion with olive oil and vinegar sauce, $6.80
Buns with minced lamb pieces (x 2), $7.80
Dolan Lamb skewers (x4), $11.80
Lamb and onion with black pepper in homemade Ughur pastry (lamb pizza), $18.80

🔆VERDICT🔆

There were 4 people and all the food we ordered was shared. I let my Kyrgyz friend do all the ordering as its her favourite cuisine. She introduced us to soo many interesting and tasty dishes.

My favourite of all is the lamb pizza (which my friend calls it a lamb pie) but on the menu its called the lamb and onion with black pepper in homemade Ughur pastry, Oh my gawd – it was soo deliciously tasty, I couldn’t stop eating it. There was soo much flavour in the meat and the pastry was lightly salty and crunchy. Yum!! I definitely recommend this dish.

The lamb skewers was also really good so much flavoured seasoning and definitely reminds me of the skewers I had when I was in Mongolia.

The huge plate of chicken pieces with potato, vegies and handmade noodles was another winner. The noodles was really nice and there was good flavours from the whole dish with the yummy gravy.
The buns was also quite nice but I could only eat half of it because there was way too much food (meat) to consume lol. It was nice to have a small side of salad just to break up the heaviness of all the meat. Overall a delicious meal.
Highly recommend in visiting Dolan Urghur with a group of people to enjoy more dishes to share as their servings are really big size.

Delicious Uyghur food! Spicy and tasty. The texture of the hand pulled noodles are springy, chewy and very yummy! Lamb skewers are also a must have! The place could do with a bit of a spruce but a part from that it’s all about the flavour!

Went here for the first time today as we’re always on the lookout for regional cuisine. This place was fantastic! Everything we had was bursting with flavour. Can’t wait to come back and try some other things.

As I don’t have much to compare it to, I cannot comment on the authenticity of the place. But there were a couple things that pointed towards its authenticity.

1) there’s a lot of lamb on the menu. I mean A LOT. If you don’t like lamb, you might not appreciate what this place has to offer. They could certainly have tried to cater to a bigger audience by offering more protein options, but I think the fact that they don’t might be a reflection of the cuisine itself.

2) the spicy things are spicy. Don’t order something spicy unless you know you can handle a good strong spice. I didn’t find it annoyingly spicy; I actually appreciate that they hit that level of spice, which is hard to find sometimes.

3) they use fatty cuts of lamb. Fat = flavour, and unless it is over the top fatty (which this wasn’t), I don’t mind. But again, if this is something that bothers you, be aware.

We had:

Spicy hand pulled noodles with lamb. Chewy looong noodles with a ton of flavour in the sauce
Lamb mince pie - mild lamb, flaky pastry. Packed with flavour
Lamb skewers - I could come back and have a whole meal of about 16 of these. So delicious.

I will certainly be back to try some of the other offerings.

Lamb skewer ($11.80) ⭐️ 4/5 ⭐️
Specially handmade long noodle ($15.80) ⭐️ 3.5/5 ⭐️
🍴Tried this small cosy restaurant serving affordable and yummy #halal food from the Uyghurs, a minority Turkic group from Xinjiang. Would highly recommend the #lambskewer which is flavourful with its unique seasoning and tender meat. The noodles are all hand-made and of really good texture - chewy and smooth. It’s hard to describe the sauce but it’s based with tomatoes. Only criticism is that it can get a bit too oily. The portions are also quite big so would recommend sharing.

So. Much. Lamb.
A place that sells homely tasting food, you don't come for the ambience, you come for the honest taste of lamb (and cumin, gosh I love that spice).

Ordered:
- Uyghur bread topped with braised tender lamb: my favourite dish; the lamb was so soft and the sauce was great with it
- Lamb skewers - good ol grilled lamb, with the fatty bits that melt in the mouth, just like ones I've had in china. Make sure to eat it while it's still hot; it gets chewy when it's cold.
- Charcoaled lamb shank - personally wasn't a big fan of this; the nature of the cut means the outside becomes dry in order to have the inside bits cooked, and the flavour is very simple and stripped down
- Lamb and onion in homemade Uyghur pastry: the pastry is crispy and holds the lamb and onion together really well; it's a bit oily but it does taste pretty good

Portion sizes were pretty big - they're definitely generous with the lamb!

I’ve been homesick for a while and this noodle definitely cures it! They professionally present garlic shoots as the secret ingredient. I can’t say it’s 100 percent authentic but it does its job. Be extra careful when you eat it otherwise you will find greasy marks and spots on your clothes!

Noodle heaven. Lamb heaven. Spice heaven. Even pie heaven. The lamb pie was a revelation. This is good honest food that doesn’t break the bank. Bring some friends because the serves are huge. Decor is basic but none of that matters once the food arrives.

I had never had Uyghur cuisine.  Therefore I decided to give it a try.

Because they advertised homemade noodles I ordered those with stir fried lamb, as lamb seemed to be the thing on the menu.  The dish was quite nice, with lots of red and green capsicum, onions, potatoes and a few green beans.  The lamb was nice and well spiced, but not with much chili.  It was fairly fatty, but the broth was nice.  Also it was starchy, potatoes+noodles will do that.  It was a large meal for 16$.

I would go back there again, but I would probably order something else.  The kebabs looked very good, as did a huge meat pie (enough for 2) a fellow siting near me ordered.  Also the kebabs and a stir fry I saw came out with some interesting looking bread.  It was a little like a roti, but it had seeds on it.  With the stir fry the meat/and vegs were pilled on top of the bread.

There were a number of items that were appropriate for vegetarians such as a fungus stir fry.  Also there were a few things which might not appeal to many non Uyghurs, such as lamb spine stir fry or lamb guts soup.
