Great Atmosphere!
This is by far the best Mexican restaurant in Sydney, the food is authentic and the flavours are spot on Mexican cuisine. The staff is very friendly and happy to help with suggestions on the menu. We had the set menu as we wanted to try everything and we all enjoyed the generous portions and tasty dishes this restaurant offered.
Yummi food and friendly staff. 39$ food package was more than enough food, also catered well for vegetarian.
Surprisingly strong flavours in the big enchilada meal and they did a really good cocktail. Overpriced but much better Mexican than I was expecting.
Would definitely come here again! Food was so amazing, flavour was on point! We love all the tacos and the enchiladas! Went here to a friends birthday and would definitely host my own birthday!
An awesome place with great food and music. The atmosphere is very vibrant and fun. We really enjoyed everything about this place. Caution: some of the food is really spicy so make sure you have a glass of water close by at all times.
They have a special at the moment - tacos for 3 dollars. Tried one of each sans the vegetarian option. All of them came in a grainy taco soft wrapping- pretty small (7cm diameter). My favourites were the pork and the fish. Restaurant was a bit dark but seemed like a good atmosphere to grab a bite and unwind.
Calaveras tacos are one of the best ways to have a cheap meal on a Tuesday. Just a 2 minute walk from the train station, this is the best way to enjoy vegetarian Mexican food and wine. Calaveras looks shady from the streets, however it has a really nice seating section upstairs and great deals all around the week!
I have enjoyed eating and drinking @ calaveras. The staff are extremely friendly and the drinks are very nice. However, I feel like the place is a bit too dark as the lights are dim and depending on where you are sitting it is sometimes hard to see. I enjoyed the tacos that I ordered, however they are not for the faint hearted as it is very spicy!!. I really enjoyed the drink "Death In Tijuana" as the mezcal, fresh lime, pink grapefruit and pomegranate complemented with the chilli salted rim was a perfect combination of sweet and sour. If Death In Tijuana doesn't sound like your fortay my second go to cocktail that I highly recommend is "Fairy Floss". The sweet taste of the strawberry limes topped off with fairy floss makes you feel like your reliving your childhood (well the 18+ version).

I’ve been lucky enough to take some epic road trips across America’s Tex-Mex heartland, and spent some time south of the border down Mexico way. Stepping into Newtown’s Calaveras Mexican Cantina and Tequila Bar, with the distinctive mix of spices and tequila shots in the air, was like stepping back to a time when I was a little younger, well, a lot younger, and a little less worldly-wise to the ways of the worm at the bottom of the bottle.

What a fun spot right near Newtown station, I’m surprised I had never come across it considering it is literally a few steps away. When you walk up the stairs, you enter this fantastically decorated space that immediately reminded me of James Bond Spectre’s opening scene. These days I’m really starting to appreciate the décor and atmosphere of restaurants more and more, so the bright colours and open space was really nice to see.
Neither of us were up for a cocktail unfortunately, which is a shame because there were so many options and some that sound right up my alley too! However, the staff were lovely and quick to accommodate with a ginger beer concoction and lychee mocktail, yum yum yum.
We tried a variety of tacos; pork, fish, chicken, and veg, with which I really recommend the fish and veg. I feel like fish tacos do no wrong honestly, it’s as if they were meant for tacos as it goes so well with the flavours. Although I asked for no feta in the veg, there was no lack of flavor and life from the pop of the corn and crunch of the slaw.
You have to get guacamole when having Mexican, kind of a given, and our side of guac disappeared at a rapid speed. Which is why it was a rookie mistake and we should have ordered the regular size as opposed to the side! They’re not wrong when they say it’s fresh & zesty, I just wish the side was a little bigger! Also had to try the ceviche de pescado which is another I recommend. I could seriously drench everything in lime, so this was perfectly to my taste. The fish tasted fresh (YES this is so important because if they have a strong fishy taste it distracts from any of the other flavours which has happened to me at another Mexican restaurant!!) and they were very generous with the amount as well. With a bit of their pico de gallo and crisp of the tortilla, this was a winner.
I know usually you would expect cheese with a quesadilla, but I got it without the mozzarella and guess what! It works so I was perfectly happy with that. The salsa adds a great flavor and I enjoyed the freshness of the veggies.
Originally I thought this would be more than enough food, but the portions are actually on the smaller side so best to order a few things to share. All round it is really a great place to go with friends and chill while sipping on their drinks as it has a very fun energy to it which was kept alive all night!

I was looking for a place to dine and get drinks with some work friends and happened across Calaveras. I love Mexican food (alongside Thai it's my favourite).
The Restaurant is conveniently located near Newtown train station for those who are not driving. Immediately I was into the ambience as you ascend a staircase to reach a small but really funky joint.
My work friends and I were greeted with friendly hellos from the barstaff but the waiter who came over to us , made it clear as day he was unimpressed that the 4 of us didn't have a reservation and audibly said so to his female co-worker. We were standing right there.
After sighing all big and looking inconvenienced by us he surveyed the restaurant and despite several empty tables (which remained so during our dining experience) told the female waiter to seat us over at window pretty much next to kitchen/side of bar.
Poor service aside from that one particular waiter, the rest of the service experience was friendly, quick and always with a smile or laugh.
I loved the food. We ordered several dishes starting with the Guacamole, Ceviche de Pescado, Totopos Azules, Huitlacoche Y Hongos, Mujer Bonita + Senor Pollo + Al Pastor tacos and quite a few margaritas. Among the margaritas we tried the lychee Laguna, passion sesion, Mexican melon sour, original margarita and the only cocktail I did not like some blood orange vile thing (which I did finish).
Overall had a great time, loved the atmosphere and minus that rude waiter at the beginning of our night would recommend this place and come back for more.
‘Calaveras’ is a funky name for a restaurant and immediately identifies it as a Mexican establishment. The word actually translates as ‘skulls’ which would seem to be a slightly odd choice for a restaurant name until you step inside. Calaveras is found on Newtown’s busy King Street and climbing the flight of stairs from street level reveals a dark, atmospheric dining space with a strong Day of the Dead theme going on.
Love the ambiance of this venue, such a lovely place to have a catch up with friends and family. Their food is delicious, particularly their tacos and they also have a great range of alcoholic and nonalcoholic drinks.
Love the location and atmosphere. Unfortunately the food was a bit spicy for my partner. The drinks are great. The food is affordable.
Went out with a friend and it was awesome. Great atmosphere great food. Definitely recommend!
the margaritas are BOMB got the strawberry and melon and it was so delicious but make sure you mix it up so the tequila is incorporated throughout your drink. snacks are fairly average, we got the chips and guac and they were good but nothing amazing
