Review Societe Overboard - Sydney

Disappointed to find them closed when we arrived last night earlier than advised, as the only alcohol supplier to glamping it meant we couldn’t enjoy a sunset drink, when I raised this In the morning I was advised it was my fault for not ordering ahead and they can’t guarantee opening hours as “I’m the only one working” In the morning when getting coffee I found an unbelievably fantastic location tarnished by grumpy staff where asking for our banana bread to be toasted seemed like a surprise request they’d never heard and like I was asking for a favour. Coffee was good though as was the toasted banana bread!

Slow service. Rude and grumpy. Do them the favour and don’t bother turning up - it’s seem this is what they would prefer. Pity that such a great island has such a poor quality place … in saying that, the coffee was pretty good.(and that is what counts)

Came for a leisurely Easter Monday lunch. The gf said it was the best seafood basket she’d ever had. Based on our experience (during peak period) if you didn’t have a good experience, it’s not the venue, the food, the staff, or the Easter Bunny, it’s you. Be polite, patient, humble, treat the staff like human beings, line up like everyone else… and you’ll have yourself a lovely time. If you’re after a venue that’ll reward entitled & arrogant douche-baggery, prepare to be disappointed. Bravo Societe Overboard, we’ll be back.

What an absolutely AMAZING place - The beautiful lady that runs the cafe and her gorgeous daughter took the most beautiful care of us and I plan on going back regularly. The food is superb, the most beautiful and friendly staff, and an incredible view! I have been looking at this island for so many years and boy am I glad we decided to take the trip to this place for lunch before exploring the rest of the island.

Charged $2 extra for soy (even though it says $0.50 on the menu). The soy is also disgusting, so not worth $8.50 for an iced coffee... certainly won’t be coming back here again as the quality is shocking. Absolute ripoff. And the staff are rude and condescending.

Excellent view and absolutely lovely food. Christine who was serving us was amazing, very hospitable and cheerful. We will definitely come again.

The coffee wasn't that great (there's another cafe on the other side that made better coffees) but the food was amazing. We spent the weekend camping on the island and got to chat with the staff here. They were friendly and very funny with great island ghost stories of their own to share. The food highlights was the bruscheta and the chooky burger for dinner and the chilli eggs for brekkie.

This is a nice cafe with only outdoor seating. There is no shelter from the rain and I few large umbrellas for the sun. They made fantastic hamburgers at very reasonable prices. Will also do burgers without the buns for those who don't want the bread.

Surprised to see all the negative reviews - we must have lucked out! Absolutely loved our very generous seafood platter and found it really good value between our group of 3. Service was slow, but overall we really enjoyed the delicious seafood right by the water's edge.

Societe Overboard one one the four places in the island to get a feed. Its the closest to the camp ground and the ferry terminal so its the most popular and busiest.

The staff are friendly and even have a chuckle when you reply that you only need a straw with your bottle of wine and no glasses. Breakfast is good, hot and on par with the Sydney hipster all-day breakfast pricing. There is a great mix of flavours and the coffee is actually good.

Will be back tomorrow for more coffee for sure! With EatsWithMiffy

Societe Overboard is the only place to chill when you're in Cockatoo Island. Even though the service is slow and food is average, I'm still giving it a positive review because this family business was welcoming and friendly. Ever been so hungry and tired, then someone fed you with whatever homemade food they had and cold beer? It was exactly how I felt. I hope they realise their weaknesses (price, speed, taste) and regain customers. Who else would feed us in this solitary island..

Cockatoo Island is a great place to visit by ferry or in our case we kayak there often. We try to avoid the Cafe - each time we have been disappointed - between some unpleasant staff, rarely good coffee, marginal and expensive food, long waits and customers being yelled at when their order is finally ready all add up to repeated bad experiences. Let's hope the owners move on and give somebody else a go!!!

If you are at all thinking about having a nice day out on Cockatoo island and wish to have some lunch then I strongly suggest you bring a picnic lunch. We visited Cockatoo island yesterday (Sunday) and at lunch time started to queue to order food. It took over 20 minutes just to order. Staff told people it will be 30 minutes wait for food. After 50 minutes I asked the staff when our 2 burgers would be ready. I was told I only ordered 15 minutes ago and would have to wait. Then another customer walked to the counter to say she had been waiting for an hour - they tried to argue with her too until a third customer also arrived to say they had been an hour waiting. At this point, instead if apologising, staff became angry and started yelling. The woman making coffees was screaming at me and said "can't you see the size of the grill - how do you expect us to cook any quicker ". I was astounded and said I wanted my burgers in next 5 minutes or my money back. I got the burgers and when I collected them I was again yelled at with staff saying "why don't you do the cooking in here if you think you can do better". The food was average and the experience appalling. The people running this cafe have no idea about food or service.

I went to Societe Overboard with my family recently, and had a very bad experience with the staff.

Even at an informal cafe, my family and i waited over an HOUR for our food. Then, when we asked one of the staff members for a knife, to cut our burger with, they told us we'd be charged $1. When we then asked if they could instead cut it in the kitchen for us, we were told they 'didn't have time'.

We are patient and reasonable people, but could not believe how rude two of the staff members were at this cafe. The food, fortunately, was good, but some of the staff should be ashamed of themselves for treating paying customers so poorly. Very disappointing.

Wanted a quick light meal before viewing the Biennale of Sydney preview. Super slow service and very over-cooked chips made fresh (right?). Staff gossiping behind counter and chips almost incinerated not because they were busy either. Took them anyway because we were in a hurry and hungry. But they were inedible. There were no other customers to speak of, so high volume is no excuse. The beer was good though, and cold. Great to have Societe Overboard on the Island. But they definitely need to work on delivery/get their chip together.

It's only eatery on Cockatoo Island, so during several visits the decent burgers were very welcome. Drinks were limited but they are licensed. Given the cafe is near the ferry wharf I would plan a visit to the island around the opening times so you don't have to walk back and forth. Only downside was the service which was very slow and they probably wouldn't be able to cope with big crowds. The location for this entry should be Cockatoo Island, not Drummoyne.

Taking a harbour cruise is definitely the more expensive option than
paying a mere $12 for a return ticket from Circular Quay to Cockatoo Island

Worst ice coffee for $7!!! Bad service.
