Review Gelato Messina Darlinghurst - Sydney

Annie Lin
Greta spot for gelato with a good variety of ice cream flavours. I would definitely recommend trying out the limited edition flavours since I had one and that was unforgettable. A nice spot to hang around after dinner at night.

Gelato Messina is good but not great. Too moorish and sweet to my liking it’s like you taste more cream than the actual flavours. Two mouthfuls and I’m feeling sick. I tried many flavours all are the same. But i do like the amount of nuts in the nutty flavours quite generous there.

World’s grumpiest girl in short shorts serving our ice cream again today. it’s ice cream not a cancer clinic why not just smile relax be friendly… So many Messina locations are like this especially this one i don’t get it, it’s really strange, are they overworked, stressed, do they think think they are the Chanel of gelato hahaha seems like it. It’s not the best gelato out there by any means. Still we go a lot and we are obviously happy going for ice cream but it’s hardly ever a pleasant experience being served… Messina hopefully one day maybe your staff will be less grumpy 🙏🏼

Always a favourite and love the weekly specials - I couldn't resist the Greek Tragedy and would highly recommend Messina any time of the year!

The line was down the block so we decided to see what the hype was about and we were not disappointed. Fast friendly service and delicious, high quality gelato with fun, complex specials are in store for you. If they have the Eton Mess & Yeah Mon specials, Go for it!!

Had Chocolate Fondant in Darlinghust over ten years ago and it was incredible to the point I quit having ice cream because it was not the same taste or texture as gelato.

Apart from following the global trend of having to put some sort of dough in every second ice cream this place does offer a more than decent choice of high quality ice creams. Seriously though, really not a fan of having crumble/biscuit/cake/cookie/biscotti/oreo/sponge in everything - just leave it at one or two cookie dough varieties... nice weekly specials or rather flavours, always check the blackboard!

My end of week treat is an ice cream from here. Possibly the best ice-cream in the world. Love the brand and friendly service.

Summer is here, and this is the main attraction.Like the sweet here, although eat more easy to put on meat, but can not resist the temptation of delicious foods.

This is a review on Gelato Messina’s Dessert Bar where they do the degustation menu and every course has a frozen component. Even the savoury courses.

I didn’t know what to expect but by the end of the degustation I was blown away. It’s ingenious, creative, experimental, immersive and there is nothing else like it in Sydney. Every course was a flavour sensation and well worth the value of $130 which included matching non-alcoholic drinks. There is an option to upgrade to alcoholic drinks for $50 extra.

It’s an intimate space where the guests are encouraged to go into the kitchen and watch the two chefs at work. Every course was explained in detail by one of the chefs.

The ingredients and produce are seasonal and locally sourced and expect the unexpected when you go. #gelatomessina #dessertbar #degustation

LOVE this icecream. So rich and creamy and delicious! Bought a tub for the house 🙈

DELICIOUS, love the pure quality and variety of innovative gelato flavours.
Especially love the vegan and dairy-free choices!Never seen this place uncrowded.

It's where it all started from - the Australian ice cream revolution and the wide-ranging flavours all made on-site (apple pie & custard ice-cream, anyone?). It's a surprisingly small outlet for Messina - and seems to have less flavours on display than, for example, the Smith St shop in Melbourne. And whilst to my mind Messina has been surpassed (in Melbourne at least), it's still great ice cream - particularly blood orange with vanilla (sadly they had no pistachio).

Best ice cream in Sydney. There are so many options for different taste buds. All of my family loves it from kids to adults.
Rizzy
Got a tub with three flavors. Nicky glasses (which is a combination of two of my favorite things; coffee and salted caramel) , Milk Chocolate with choc peanut fudge, and Chocolate Mint (it didn't taste like processed mint mouth fresheners but rather like real mint leaves which was a first for me tasting mint leaves in an ice cream) Absolutely loved it.

*Messina creative department review*

Absolutely incredible experience! So much creativity and uniqueness in each dish. Our taste buds went on a flavour rollercoaster. Loved every single dish. Highly recommend!!

We've been buying Messina icecream since they opened their first shop in Darlinghurst... got vanilla last Saturday to serve at dinner party.... horrible! It used to be so creamy and have that fantastic vanilla bean flavour... this was watery and no flavour.... worse still freezes too hard in the freezer... a sure sign they are 'dumbing down' the recipe with cheaper ingredients....sooo disappointing... next time we need icecream we'll be going to one of their director competitors in the area... fear quality is suffering because of their success....

When you think of gelato Messina is perhaps the first thing that comes to mind. However, Messina's Creative Department is something a little unfamiliar to many people. This is not scoops of Messina gelato on a plate. Rather it's a gelato degustation bringing an unusual dinning experience that's never seen before. It's a sweet journey using bold flavours and creative combinations that challenge your taste buds.

YUM!! The Pistachio praline is to-die-for!! Crunchy with fresh pistachios, and packed with pistachio flavour. Completely outshone the other flavour I got - Chocolate with Peanut Butter Fudge.
That_Foodie_Friend
A great place for good gelato. Always fresh and flavourful! This place reminds me of Italy, so I will be back. Can't wait to have one closer to where I live!

The cone is good especially butterscotch. The best thing to have after having dinner . Loved the food loved the place ☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️

Lots of flavours to choose from. Open late. There's seats inside and outside. Love taste testing before we commit to a flavour. There's a list that changes so there's always new flavours coming out.

Always came here to try their specials! The store is tucked away on a street in darlinghurst. Its a really small store. The service is always top-notch, workers are heaps friendly! And they honestly have soo many specials that other messina stores don’t have! Its definitely worth visiting this place for unique desserts! It is a little expensive, around $10-$15 per dessert, but its honestly soo good!
Eunifoodie
Like every other Messina store, absolutely amazing gelato flavours and prices! Consistent service across most Messina branches. Definitely a go to dessert place if you’re ever in Darlinghurst!
Dhruvika Joshi
I had the Hazelnut, Coconut and Lychee, Tiramisu flavours super delicious Sorbets. The best ice cream you can have is from here and they pack it so well if you want to take away. You just can’t miss having Ice cream from here.

ONE OF THE BEST GELATO PLACES EVER. Not even one outlet but all outlets that provides genuine gelatos made from experimenting new ideas and creations for all ages. Everyone must give it a try with the new flavours they post!
Xlittlecupcake
One of my all time fav, go-to places for ice cream - love how they have weekly specials (check their Instagram for the flavours) , so there is always something new and unique to try ^__^
I love their piatachio and salted coconut mango flavours - both super creamy and permanent flavours available at all locations.
Ms Picky On Coffee
I never understood the hype of Messina while other better few out there! I gave it 3-4 times a try, they were all disappointment.. Recently, due to a large group gathering and they wanted ice cream while passing by, I tried their Matcha chocolate fudge one as it was one of the specials for that week. It wasn’t too bad and I was kind of surprised. So I believe it is fair to give their special ones a try as it may turn good, but their regular ice cream variety still not up to my standard. In case of emergency ice cream attack, their speacial of the week ones might satisfy the craving.
Frankiieshungrytummy
Went to the headquarters for a degustation and absolutely loved it.
The food was amazing and the service was great.
Would definitely recommend visiting this place and would recommend it to family and friends.
The actual store itself is super busy and doing really well.
Xihuahua 🐶
Why do they have so high mark but I think it is really normal. I think movenpick ice cream is better!

1. Matcha 🍵 maker. Com, they add nuts inside which destroy the light Matcha favour. 3/5
2. Tiramisu. I tried really good tiramisu at papa, so this one is quite normal. 3.5/5
3. Macadamia. It is really filling but the texture is not so good. Too sticky. 3.5/5
4. Yogurt berry. It’s not very creamy but it’s good, looks like healthy. 3/5
Messina is probably one of the best ice cream parlours I’ve ever been to. I usually always opt for one (or two) of the specials flavours. I like that you can taste before you buy as well. 💯
ElsewhereBriefly
News of Gelato Messina’s Creative Department bringing their 7 course degustation to Brisbane had a lot of people immediately interested. Usually in Sydney, their two-week only visit meant opportunities to partake of the experience were limited, particularly given that each sitting only accommodates 12 diners. We missed out on the initial round of tickets, but seized the opportunity when we were contacted and told that they had an additional session and available seats. It turns out it is worth putting yourself on the wait list after all..
Jess
Huge variety, have tried heaps of flavours and so glad they're opening more of these stores around the place. Definitely the best gelato place!
Marina Samountry
Huge variety and wicked sense of humour from the servers. I had the pandan and coconut, and yogurt caramel. Perfect balance of sweet and salty. Definitely the best gelato place I've been to.
E
A hot day always calls for something sweet and cool. I had their green tea scoop and thoroughly enjoyed it. It was well balanced with the matcha and wasn't too overly creamy in taste as some can be. It also had some texture through it, didn't know what it was but it was good!

We finally stopped by Messina for some gelato after hearing lots of positive things. We tried their Raspberry Sorbet, strawberries and cream gelato, and their Charlie Brown gelato.

The lady who served us was really friendly, which was nice. Despite the fact that a single scoop is pretty pricey at $4.80, they are generous with the serving size.

All three flavours were tasty, and it was definitely one of the creamiest gelato that we have ever tried. They were executed in a way that were delicious and indulgent, but not overly sweet - which made it really enjoyable. We're looking forward to trying more flavours at their different venues soon!

Yes!!! I've always said that if I could only eat one thing for the rest of my life, that would be ice cream.

And to be more specific, it would be Gelato Messina ice cream. It's great that they always have new flavours on rotation- but some of my favourites include:
- Salted caramel & white chocolate
- Apple pie
- Pandan and coconut
And their sorbets are absolutely delish! 🍨
Tommy Birken
All hail the king of gelato! I recently went to a wedding which had a Messina icecream station and it was the best part of the wedding, so I needed to check out their store. Messina is hands down the best. I had the choc chip icecream and pandan coconut. Both were amazing!
I_like_pickles
What a lovely dessert place. There is so much to choose from! There are so many flavours and variations to choose from its such a dream!

Everything is beautifully presented and so colourful. The most difficult thing to do here is choosing what to have.
Julie Jiang
Unforgettable dessert EVER!!! Fancy setting and decor, friendly customer service and the most delicious and exquisite food. Definitely go back again!!!
Leon
The greedy girlfriend got a 1.5L tub of Messina yesterday in five flavours - hazelnut, pistachio, coconut and lychee, strawberry and cream and apple pie. Nothing beats eating a whole tub of ice cream while watching my favourite football matches with my darling on a Saturday evening 😁
Taniacandido
Incredible!! It's expensive but the flavors are different and taste amazing. We had the chocolate fondant, banana split and jack Daniels/chocolate. Only annoying part was it's cash only
Pacc
Messina is pretty much everywhere now so i tried out 2 different flavours at 2 different locations. $4 for a tiny scoop is pretty good value. Dont remember what flavour i had in the cone but i know its good. The blood orange in a cup was very nice, not too sweet and sour. Its creative that they change their specials every now and then but I usually find them too sweet. Stick to the basic flavours.
FoodLuva
Yum is all I can say. Spend some time tasting, then get cracking. Can't go too wrong here, just make sure you've left room for all of this. I recommend the salted caramel, and the staple choc chip.
Priyanka Mohan
There are so many options and flavours to choose from. The flavours are not over powering and just right to cleanse one's palette, leaving a wonderful taste of the flavour of your choice. The sweetness lingers making one feel guilt free. Pear with rubbarb...is a good choice.
Eatdrinkbe_merry
I discovered this place four years ago and back then Darlinghurst was its only address! My family became obsessed with the place and the flavours and we liked it on Facebook to get regular updates of the latest tempting flavours. We would all jump in the car and travel across the bridge way into the night! We loved the gelato and the regular flavours, but the amazing specials board is what really got us in. Weekly specials like "FBIcecream" - (vanilla and brown sugar with cinnamon donuts and raspberry jam smashed throughout) and "Oreogasm" - peanut gelato with Oreo custard and crushed Oreo biscuit were truly inspirational. Once these flavours sold out there was no more until they appeared months later. There was always a sense of urgency!

Well, this is the story of how a small company found out what people wanted and gave them lots of it! What a success! Now there are maybe 10 outlets and business is thriving but happy to report the flavour has not changed and they have tried to keep prices low. We have a tradition in our family....you have a birthday.... you get a Messina Ice-cream cake for breakfast in the bed! Tried nearly all the range now! Love you Messina!
Hello Miss May
Popped over at Messina for a yummy time,
Can never go wrong with any of their fun flavours!
Someday, I will try them all!
(By the way after this shot, I had two licks of my strawberry and passion fruit gelato, my ice cream fell into the ground haha)

For my TOP 5 most instagrammable ice cream in Sydney, head to my blog
Hellomissmay.com

And colourful Instagram pix
@hellomissmay

Along with Gelato Messina Fitzroy, Gelato Messina Darlinghurst tops my personal list of favourite ice creams in Australia. Bustling and lively day and night, the atmosphere is fun and exciting - admittedly sometimes the crowds and chaos are just too much and impact negatively on the experience.

The gelato, however, is amazing. Whenever I go I always sample three flavours that I know I'm not going to get - so I've tasted pretty much all the flavours by now...some are better than others but the baseline is set pretty damn high. My personal favourite is combining chocolate sorbet with blood orange... DIVINE. Mango coconut sorbet is great for summer too!

Will update this post if I find a better gelato!! None so far.

I love Messina..

most of the time..

I got to Messina maybe once every fortnight and most time its a winner. I know what I'm getting when I order the coconut and pandan, or the choc chip. But, when I order their weekly special, it's a gamble. Generally, I find them to be a bit too sweet, but I think it's pretty cool that they're trying new and crazy things.

Wow, wow, wow!

Having recently moved to the area for work, I was thrilled to find out that there are a number of gelato places mere moments away from my office.

Gelato Messina is the best of the lot, I have had four different flavours, all of them excellent. The hazelnut is the best I have ever had.
After reading some of the reviews of this place, I decided to go and try the salted caramel and white chocolate. Such a nice gelato, this place is definitely worth stopping at if you're nearby.

Yummy 😋Special flavors change every month. I ate salt flavor. It was really tasty! It's a good system for us to try them before buying that.
Bell Sriweerawanidchakun
Delicious creative gelato. Had raspberry, salt and senses, salted caramel, and choc lamington. All flavours are absolutely spot on!! Wish there was a Gelato Messina in Adelaide!! I'd go there every week!
TotalAwkward
The cakes are really tastes as long as you are happy to pay for it.

There are "topical" special flavours that change regularly e.g. In honour of elections . This is on top of the large selection of regular flavours. Salted caramel with white chocolate is one of my favourites. Some of the flavours with mix ins can get rather sweet. The line at night is crazy, even on a weekday so either get there during the day or early at night.
Aron
Nice tasting ice cream. Had vanilla and chocolate chip, not the best but pretty good. Would defiantly grab an ice cream if passing.
Rachael Brookes
Okay, call me crazy but this was my first ever Messina experience and it was amazing!!!
I'm so glad they have vegan options here, and what's even better they taste incredible, you wouldn't even know they were egg and dairy free. I had the Strawberry gelato and Salted Coconut and Mango gelato, the strawberry flavour really came through and was so refreshing but it was not as good as the salted coconut, let me say it was heaven!!!! The coconut was so beautiful and the swirl of mango through it complimented it so well, honestly i'm considering going back tomorrow and getting it again!!! My friend got the Rhubarb and Pear (non-vegan) and she said it was really great, a weird combo when looking at it but she said it worked well.
Messina is definitely a new favourite ice-cream stop!
Mary Leech
It's hard to get gelato better than Messina in Sydney. Some would say Cow and the Moon in Newtown is the best, but I beg to differ. Messina is innovative and they're always pushing the envelope, with OTT (over the top) flavours.

They're a bit expensive, but servings are generous, and I'd gladly pay for gelato this good!
Eatventures
It's a no brainer, messina gelato is good every time. I love the specials when they're available but I definitely can't go past the salted caramel with white chocolate.
Get a tub if you can!
Manz
Love Messina! And this is the place that started it all... Instead of going for my favourite Blood Orange, this time I went with one of the specials, "Pop's" a dark chocolate & honey gelato with nougat. It was smooth and rich, the nougat added some nice chewiness to it. My friend had another special, "Two Stroke" white choc, hazelnut & coffee gelato with hazelnuts, which was also really smooth & rich, sweet, but I love the crunch of the hazelnuts. Best thing was that there were no lines and the staff were really friendly. Great!

The next couple of #icecreamthurs posts will be brought to you from Sydney!Gelato Messina wins all the things for having so many sorbet options. I always feel spoilt for choice, and on this occasion I decided to venture beyond my fruity sorbet comfort-zone (oh yes, dear readers) and order the chocolate sorbet. With a second scoop of strawberry. You know, because fruit is the best. Well, this experience has taught me two things. 1. Chocolate sorbet is da bomb, no question. It’s rich, luscious and so richly tasty that I felt like I’d eaten a whole brownie afterwards. 2. Chocolate and fruit belong together. I spent a moment regretting my choice of strawberry, because raspberry would have brought the tartness that the chocolate so clearly needed, but the fresh,
Issac_eatsalot
What can I say that hasn't been said before. Silky smooth gelato with bomb ass flavours and combos. Peanut butter and honey brioche flavor and adulterer malteaser 👏
Foodie87
Nice creamy ice cream with lots of real flavour. I liked this store much better then the Melbourne store. The staff seem more friendly and happy.
Jmanchatty
love the cakes (previously they had mini cakes which was amazing, shame they got rid of that) best cake imo is the mush room, love the green grass base (popping lollies!) and love the gooey chocolately top as well. definitely recommend the cakes
Maureen Grace Kuran
Love this dessert bar! Gelatos are expensive but it taste amazing! some of their ice cream cakes are divine but sometimes too sweet that you can only eat a few bites. Surry Hills branch are always packed, you have to line up to get a scoop of gelato, but, if you live near the shire, messina in miranda is the place to be! no queues! it's all yours!:)
Ben Goodman
pretty much perfection in the world of ice cream. never dissapointed. cool how oyu can see behind teh scenes. i love it how you can try as many flavors as you like before deciding with no pressure
FOOD TRIP
First time trying out Messina in Sydney and it was busy as expected. Great flavours to choose from, both the classics and the specials. Love their ice cream and would highly recommend for everyone to try!. The Romanikerer + Strawberries & Cream (2 scoops) $6.80. Loved the bits of peanut butter brownie in the Romanikerer, some were pretty massive. Strawberries and cream was light, refreshing and creamy. Perfect combination! 9/10
Soferio
I have been to lots of countries, and I think this must be among the most creative ice creameries in the world, and the best in Sydney. You must try this. Make sure you try the daily specials.
Danny Della
Highly recommend the fruit sorbets! The raspberry and passion fruit are extremely refreshing and fruity! Ideal if you can't have too much dairy 😍🍦
I'm Still Hungry
Yes, it’s expensive, but I enjoyed almost every single dish, and there were some truly innovative flavour & ingredient combinations that I would either have to pay even more money for (as the dessert course of a fine dining restaurant), or wouldn’t be able to find in Sydney at all.

This is the gap that Messina has filled – a truly chic, luxuriant choice to cater for the most discerning & adventurous of sweet tooths that Sydney sorely lacks. I don’t have a huge appetite for sweets, however this is a game-changer for me.
Sunil
Simply WOW! They serve the BEST Gelatos ever! One word - AMAZING!

Will just give this an overall rating, because section-wise ratings are not even needed here. I'm lost for words! A resounding FIVE!
Amys_food_adventures
Have been here more times than i can remember. All times it has been great. My ultimate favourite is the coconut and mango salsa and then i tend to pick a flavour from their specials menu. Most of the fruit flavours plus some on the chocolate ones are nice. When it gets to be an over complicated flavour it tends to loose its mark. Big fan and i look forward to seeing more interesting and exciting flavours in future.
Iwan W
My favourite gelatos are coconut and pandan / lychee!!!! The best flavours! Must try! If you love dessert and ice cream like I do you will love this place! seriously. Go get it!
Mitch P
people queue up ...
because people are like sheep; dumb and without any idea,
and arrogant, like this site, requesting a minimum of 140 characters.
Don't let me tell more, you wouldn't like it and couldn't take it anyway.
Raph M
Best. Ice Cream. Ever.
Seriously. If you haven't given it a go, give it a go. It will change your life.

Protip: Get the panna cotta and the pear & rhubarb. The skies will open and angels wil start to sing.
Nadiaargh
I love love this place. Amazing desserts, makes a party in your mouth. Hard to resist coming here every day. Staff are friendly, though the seating is very limited so you'd have to stand if the only two tables were full. Lucky I've never had to.
Baz Juan Pablo Sanchez
For me Gelato Messina is a great gelato maker, but personally still not as good as the Cow and Moon Gelateria

Funky creative flavours, even Crazier gelato cake creations all leads to a good experience
Lil' Me
I had my very first Messina gelato at this place, it got me hooked. Basically I go there on monthly basis, have tried many types of gelato including the ice cream cakes. No need further comments, it is so tasty and can be addictive too!! It is the best summer dessert!
Anne Nguyen
This place is pumping. I havent seen so many people queue up for gelato in a long time. Macadamia crunch is just perfection. Pistachio had a very nutty strong flavour and wasn't too sickly sweet. Really delish
Preeti Davidson
This is not gelato. It doesn't resemble gelato's texture or taste in any way. It's pretty decent ice cream, but if you've ever been to Italy or had real gelato elsewhere, you'd think it a crime for this frozen substance to share the moniker.
An Antelope
LOVE LOVE LOVE. Can't fault any of the flavours. Favourites this time (there can never be enough visits to Gelato Messina) were the Pannacotta with Fig Jam and Amaretti Biscuit, Pear and Rhubarb and their special, Copper's Delight.

The peanut butter and coffee gelato (Copper's Delight) had a wonderful depth of flavour. The salted caramel here is one of the best I've had. It's not too sweet, and has a great savoury character. The pistachio is such a refreshing take on the classic flavour. I think it must be roasted, to achieve the earthiness it has.
Alex Tee
Seems to be just as good no matter which state you're in. Made a very long, winding, map-less walk from our Pitt street base in Sydney to Darlinghurst Messina. An hour or so later we arrived at our destination for our much deserved gelato. Just as delicious as the first time I tasted it.
Simply Starving
Messina is an absolute must if you're visiting Sydney - it's almost a tourist attraction in its own right! Crazy, experimental flavours are always on offer but I always opt for the Salted Coconut and Mango sorbet - it's the best gelato I've ever had!
Sweetandyummie
I am never disappointed when i visit this place. Menu changes regularly and its always delicious. Atmosphere is milk bar style and the customer service is always attentive. i highly recommend a visit.
LittleM
Went to the night noodle market and saw Messina's lucky fortune bar. Tried the 'David Boa-wy'; a deep fried gua bao with salted coconut sorbet, white chocolate mango ganache with crushed cashews. It didn't taste too bad and was refreshing, but I think I ruin the mild flavours by going crazy adding the free chocolate and caramel sauce from the counter. 😄 I still enjoyed it though...
Matchachacha
Impulse buy of a Gold Bullion bar at the Night Noodle Markets. Sounded good - gulamalaka gelato, condensed milk gelato, passion fruit jelly, a nut crunch, and banana bread - but I was really disappointed. The gelatos were both just sweet & tasted exactly the same. It was less than the sum of its parts & I didn't think it was worth the fat grams to even finish it. At $10 for a small ice-cream bar it IS like gold bullion for them!

The Messina gelatos are such interesting flavours just on their own, but some of their fancier small dessert creations just don't fly. If you have something good, mucking around with it doesn't always improve it.
Kai Luv
Night noodle market extravaganza. I was excited by the description of the great balls of fryer but disappointed by the execution. Where I had been expecting an amazing contrast between hot deep fried ice cream ball stuffed with iced Thai custard gelato, the dish was actually cold right through and the flavours blended into a mushy ball of nothing. Meh.
Ashley Xu
The dessert is a bit disappointed. The dark chocolate got hardened by the ice cream too soon and became hard to chew. It also sticky to the teeth. Will not go there again. The gelato is good.
Foodie101
I am obsessed with gelato Messina. I came 4 times in 3 days in Sydney and it was lovely. I recommend everyone goes, I will definitely be back!!!
Dave Monds
We tried the Damo and Jasper soft serves. Pretty amazing to look at but I couldn't really taste the milo in the Jasper and the Damo had to much going on. The passion fruit sauce seemed out of place. Anyway, we've been now and will go back. Probably just try the gelato next time.
Gemma Davies
I. LOVE. MESSINA!! Their flavours never fail to amaze me and blow my mind with their flavour combinations. We went to the dessert bar and ordered the Cinnamon Scroll and Apple pie. In a word- overwhelming. We went after a delicious lunch and I really wish we'd skipped straight the dessert. I couldn't get enough of the soft, pillowy scroll which was covered in melting ice cream. If you're after something a bit less decadent, go straight to the gelato. Every flavour is a winner!
WestyAA
Not often does one receive 5 stars. Messina Gelato is by far the best Gelato I've tasted in the world. I wouldn't be surprised if we see 200 of these pop up around Australia in years to come.
Princess_Porky
Best gelato in Sydney. Our favourite is the Surry Hills place but only coz it's closer to home. But all Messina are fabulous. Faultless. We always grab 3 scoops. Salted caramel for me, coffee for him and then one of their specials.
Insatiable Munchies
Gelato Messina’s Dessert Bar in Darlinghurst has always been OTT in their creations, but when you have a collaborator like ex-Hartyard Andy Bowdy, you know that you’re in for a real treat. Or a sugar spike so high it can hold its own against the statue of liberty. Now I am not a sweets person, not by a long shot, but when I do, I like to go all out. And the Rocher Ferrero certainly fits that description: hazelnut and chocolate come together in a soft serve swirl covered with so many shards of wafer and chocolate that you don’t know where the crispy ends and the rich gelato begins.
Aneta N
Bounty gelato and "Number 2" (peanut butter gelato with brownies and dulce di leche)... Need I say more? Yes, it is highly priced, but well worth it. Highly impressed with the flavours on offer. A place to please both the adults and the children!
Chilli Feli
Messina and Andy Bowdy collaboration: cinnabunstein! A warmed cinnamon roll topped with doughnut soft serve and lashings of chocolate sauce and peanuts. My god, this will satisfy your sweet tooth.
G E R A L D
A big fan of ice-cream, Messina Dessert Bar hit the spot! Greeted by friendly staff, I ordered one of their soft serve sundaes called the Luigi Wilson. Seating outside the shop front is very limited. I enjoyed every bite, savouring the sweet combination of quality flavours. Could have eaten another sundae, but did not want to spoil the moment by over indulging. Worth the $10! Definitely coming back!
James Tanner
I like peanut butter in ice cream and Messina seems to always deliver.
Seriously, I've been to a lot of icecream joints in Sydney and Messina is by far the superior icecream maker that's successful at putting non icecream items into their icecream. What I mean by that is they've got the mix and technique right, where you can taste chunks of what they've put into the icecream yet able to keep that icecream smooth and creamy.
Highly recommend that you try this place in Darlinghurst or Surry hills but steer clear of the one in The Star
Asten
I was hanging out to try this place and I had my heart set on one of the limited edition flavours involving cherry and coconut, and my sister for another limited edition flavour involving caramel and wafers. Then we went and they had sold out... so this was pretty disappointing. Nothing spectacular about this ice cream compared to all of the others. It's fine...
Nathalie Christiansen
Simply great. Love the classic and special flavours. Recently tried Roche Fererrer which is one of the soft serve sundaes. They are a collaboration of Messina and Andy Bowdy Pastry, available only at Darlinghurst store. Love it! However, it gets richer every bite, so it's perfect for sharing. Be sure to try them before they took them out from the menu!
Daniel
Can't say a bad word about these guys. Always busy, has acquired somewhat of a cult following in Sydney. Their weekly specials is what keeps me coming back, otherwise it's easy to get bored with the same old flavors.
Stefania Pinna
I usually would give Messina a 5 star however today i have tried the soft serve of rocher cone and was really disappointed.. It simply did nothing for me .. It was a very generous portion for 10$ ..but perhaps not for me:(...

So we do love this place and ate there two days in a row but found the specials were good but some of the standard gelato was a bit bland and boring. Wasn't quite as good as we remembered from our last trip to Sydney town.

These guys know how to make perfection taste better. Consistent on every visit to this place whether it's in Sydney or Melbourne. Only one negative is that there is no dessert bar opened in Melbourne yet
Rachaeleatith
Really fun dessert bar with stacks of great Sundae options as well as the option to make your own. Really decent price considering the normal price of Messina and the advantage of no line
Ningjaeats
#kningjaeats deliciously indulgent gelato. Who doesn't love Messina? Great flavours every week and creative cakes too! It's always so busy here (even in winter) and even more so since they opened the cute and trendy dessert bar next door!

Ok. This place is beyond my dreams good. Having 2 scoops is literally the equivalent of having a meal. Quite surprised that they have vegetarian and vegan options. The service is quick even during rush hours. Want to go back every friggin day.

The Messina Dessert Bar is a pretty cool concept, especially for people who love Gelato Messina creations. The dessert bar is next to Gelato Messina so you have a big selection of desserts to choose from.
At the Dessert Bar you can either have one of their preselected menu items or choose your own creation from the sorbets and the multiple base choices and toppings.
I wish there was a bigger selection of gelato to choose from as having only a couple kind of lets down the whole experience when next door their is a huge array of amazing flavours.

Good for a one off novelty thing. Don't really see myself going back there again any time in the near future. Surprisingly inventive varieties there. Right next door to the original do if you're not into the adventurous flavour combinations you can always go next door!

Dulche de leche is the best. Tiramisu always a winner as well. Staff are always patient despite the music and crowd volume and indecisive customers. Best gelato.
Petitepatissiereblog
They have a great and interesting concept where all the fillings of the different flavours are freshly made every day! I was very impressed as I read through their processes. It is no wonder that they are able to produce such high quality gelato! There are a lot of different interesting flavours as well as whole gelato cakes available at the store. We decided to go for our two default favourite flavours: salted caramel and caramelised white chocolate. Salted Caramel with White Chocolate Bits & Caramelised White Chocolate To be honest, I was very sceptica

I usually head straight to the Messina Ice Cream shop, but today my eye caught the attractive sundaes displayed on a large poster on the shop next door. Another Messina? Yes it is, but it is the one and only Messina Dessert Bar and Gelato Cake shop in Sydney.

I remembered trying out one of these Messina Dessert Bar products at last year’s Food and Wine Fair in Hyde Park; and now I had the chance to sample it again at Messina's own dessert shop in Darlinghurst.
The owners of Messina have always wanted to have an 'adventure sundae bar' where customers can have an input into the creative process of mixing and matching a range of combinations to create their own unique sundae. In the Dessert Bar, it's all about soft serve gelato and what other imaginative ingredients you can put together to create your own sundae with. The choice is yours or simply choose from the suggested sundaes available. There are 8 suggested sundaes to choose from with names such as Pis-tached Out, Getting Toasted, I Chouxs You, Tea Time Treat, Rainbow Time, Holy Choc, Caramel Love Pocket and Anti Yoga. The cost for any of these is only $7! Two scoops of ice cream next door is $6 - so this is definitely a better option and | can guarantee you won't be disappointed.

Since I had already spied the 'Caramel Love Pocket' on the suggested sundaes poster I ordered it. Caramel Love Pocket was made up of a single serve of origin dark chocolate gelato with vanilla custard topped with short bread and gianduia fudge. The picture looked very good and the ingredients tasted even better. I loved the dessert pastry Puff with the oozy caramel filling. Wait till you sink your teeth into that one!
Next time I visit I want to to be more adventurous and make my own creation. A blackboard helps first timers decide by giving the following steps as a guide. Firstly, choose your own kind of base - maybe a special edition waffle cones, a crepe, a doughnuts or any of the other in-house bases available. Next add a soft serve gelato of your choice. Every 6 weeks, the dessert bar makes a new flavour of soft serve gelato or sorbet to choose from. Finally, get creative and decorative by picking your handmade additions to add on top and then devour with pleasure.

Adventures In Winterland
Gelato Messina’s gelato cakes are famous around Australia – that was more than enough motivation to give them a try! The cakes are only available at their Darlinghurst store, so off we went, excited by the creative options. Because one’s eyes are often bigger than one’s tummy, Gelato Messina offers mini gelato cakes as well as the full party size – I couldn’t go past the ‘Dr Evil’s Magic Mushroom’ (who could, with a name like that?). It was a shame to get stuck in because it was so beautifully crafted, but the first mouthful cured me of any further guilt. The top of the mushroom is made from dark chocolate gelato, peanut cookies and silky smooth dulce de leche, the bitter dark chocolate flavour matching the sweet dulce de leche and the cookies adding some crunch. The same flavours continue into the white stem, but the real surprise was in the ‘grass’ – popping candy! The

Do I still need to write a review about this place? I'm not an ice-cream expert and I still think all gelato taste pretty similar (sorry), except their flavors. So, I'm going to rate this based on their signature flavors. Pear and rhubarb, apple pie, and their salted caramel ARE MUST TRY!

Waffle cone filled with swirls of blood peach sorbet & toasted macadamia gelato, sable breton, honey marshmallow, peruvian chocolate & dipped in chocolate. Love it! I was too full by the time I left Spice I Am, but my sister "insist" that I must try the ice cream here, since this store is different from other Messina stores. The blood peach sorbet was so refreshing! I was too full and the chocolate coat could make it a little bit overwhelming, but the taginess of the blood peach sorbet helps.

... – first off the divine foods of Messina Milk Bar, I was obsessed with CURDISH DELIGHT – pic at top left of the first quad image – try this – Salted Caramel Gelato, orange curd, buttery biscuit crumbs, enrobed (what a sexy word) in milk chocolate, and topped in a sprinkling of orange rind! Just WOW!!!

My only warning is stay away from the tomato flavour they recently introduced. Some flavours were never destined for gelato, this is one of them!
Fairy floss raises the eyebrows. Having eaten at all other Gelato Messina outlets in Oz, had to try the dessert bar so first stop in a wander across Darlinghurst/Kings Cross. I had read about the concept but lucky when I went there lunchtime Saturday, there was only one family eating outside with their dogs. There are only the gelato options they have listed which change over a period of time - it's not the full set of gelato offerings you get next door. Only the blood peach sounded good so had that with a churros base. Added vanilla anglaise and rose meringues and topped it off with fairy floss so no, not one of the set combinations. There's always a risk with this that you just end up with some gigantic sweet mess that jars the flavours. Not sure with this one but I took the remaining little table outside. Once it came out with the fairy floss reaching skyhigh, one lady walked past and yelled "WOW!". Had to keep it well away from the dogs too. Only drawback is you have to mow through the floss to practically eat anything else so it didn't last long. Blood peach was OK but its strong taste very much overshadowed the whole thing. Wished they had more seats if you're going to try and eat something that big.

The best Gelato in SYD. Try the fig one! Love it

Highly recommended!. The queue is so deceptive... You'd think with such long queues that the waiting time to be served will be forever but how wrong was I! One night, I decided to queue up with the missus and thought I'd have to wait a long time... within 10 minutes, I was already at the front picking the flavours I wanted! Best Gelato I've had in Sydney and the salted caramel is to die for!

Awesome service, food and overall experience. Enjoy!!!!. This place delivers perfection every time. No matter what mood you're in, head on over to Gelato Messina and they'll put a smile on your face and the sweet taste of awesomeness in your mouth.

Some of the best ice cream some one could ever eat.

10/10

Ambience is appalling. The music is teally loud and typically unpleasant
The assistant had to ask me to repeat my order because she couldnot hear.
Buying an ice cream cone on a hot day turned into a very unpleasant experience.

We were after a quick after diner snack and ended up at Messina ice cream in Darlinghurst. There was a cue, as there always is but then again the ice cream is good. We both took an ice cream from the specials list: one with ricotta, cannoli and limoncello and the other with peanut butter, pretzels and chocolate. The ricotta ice cream was nice but I didn’t really like the lemon after taste. I had a bite of the pretzel/ peanut butter which was a fantastic combination! Next time I’ll have that one (if it’s still on the menu).

On my first visit to Sydney, a friend introduced me to Gelato Messina. It was, at the time, the best ice cream-like treat I had ever had. I can’t even count how many times I returned over the course of that stay, or the next visit, or the next.

It’s Gelato Messina, you come expecting a high quality dessert and a high quality dessert is what you get. Messina is still one of the places you insist on taking your friend/family member from overseas. Messina is still the wily old guy on the basketball court that you’re too scared to talk trash to because he’ll hit you with his old man strength. Messina is Jason Alexander. I don’t care that he hasn’t been in anything as good as Seinfeld, he’s still George mother f*cking Costanza and still one of the greatest television characters of all time. Gelato Messina is still Gelato Messina, a synonym for awesome. Fujipan Japanese Bakery I thought Fujipan suddenly offering soft serve was one of the most out of the blue things that occurred for all Sydney food lovers. It’d be like if I suddenly decided to produce hip hop beats. Unexpected, kinda random but also made a lot of sense. Speaking of sense, let’s take a look at Fujipan’s black sense-ame soft serve: Black sesame soft serve from Fujipan Price: $2.90 for a nice dollop of pure black sesame soft serve in a sweet wafer cone. Sweet. Flavour: To my knowledge, you can’t get black sesame soft serve anywhere else in Sydney right now. It’s a niche offering which I thoroughly enjoyed. The flavour is very authentic and has a fine balance between a subtle savoury taste and a hint of sweetness. From a pure flavour standpoint, this is one of my absolute favourites. Texture: Fujipan’s soft serve is very icy but incredibly refreshing. Icy what you did there Fuji, Icy it. Resilience: Fujipan’s soft serve is designed to be enjoyed quickly as it starts dripping quite quickly creating one of the tastiest IV drips you’ll ever see. Intangibles: A buddy of mine told me a story about how she went to try the soft serve at Fujipan but went on a day in which their machine needed maintenance. So she just gorged on the range of Japanese baked goods instead and was still quite happy. No soft serve but you get a totoro shaped bun instead? That’s n

January 15, 2015 January 15, 2015 / samanthawxlow Date night was Tuesday night this week and although I had my heart set on Belly Bao (and even waited 15 minutes till the supposed opening time) it was only later that I found out that they open from Wednesday to Saturday! Argh, silly me. A bit stuck on what to do we wandered for a bit until Robert cleverly suggests checking out the food stalls at Sydney Festival . The festival’s primary focus is on arts and entertainment but with a movie booked for 7 pm, we’re just here for a feed. There were some people while we were there from around 5.30 – 6.30 pm but no where near as ridiculously packed as the Night Noodle Markets were, or maybe people were inside the respective indoor areas to watch a show. Anyway we’re both hungry and end up scoffing about five different things as dinner. Le Mountain – Cheesesmith Photo by Robert Newey When I heard from Philsosophy that there was raclette in town my heart skipped a beat. My only memories of this magical Swiss invention are from the Borough Markets in London but every single visit saw me getting a serving of it. In London it’s melted Raclette cheese with the racler. Tuesday it seems is not a Raclette kind of day but I’m not too disappointed as Le Mountain – gruyere, comte and emmenthal – cheers me up instantly. Gooey, cheesy perfection is the middle name I’ve given to Le Mountain. I’ve tried these cheeses before on their own and know them to have quite a light flavour individually. But with their powers combined it’s like the Captain Planet of dairy! It’s also topped with a rosemary relish that’s a little sweet to battle off any sluggish sensations in your mouth for consuming three types of fat (or protein if you like) on top of carbs. It was heartbreaking to hear about the fire that happened at Porteno’s main store recently. Thankfully it was empty at the time (because they were here) so no one got hurt. If their spirits were dampened it certainly didn’t show, service was great

I absolutely love the taste and quality of their gelato and their amazing unique flavors, they are definitely not your mainstream chocolate and vanilla. Second time coming to the Sydney Festival Village in Hyde Park. Sadly there was no Stone Hedge jumping castle this year :( but there were many fun attractions down near Darling Harbour. With the last day of Sydney Festival upon us, minus a few events tomorrow, here is my review at last. Be sure to check out their many wonderful events next year, and don't forget about good old Parramatta, they have amazing shows on at Riverside each year!
Gelato Messina: Cherry Pie - $8 Chocolate biscuit base with cherry gel, vanilla custard gelato and cherry compote topped w/ whipped cream. My friend really didn't like the cherries, but the other options where even worse for her. I quite liked the sour cherries, but I too couldn't have eaten all of that! The gel I liked, if you couldn't stomach the cherries, at least the gel added some flavour, but my friend said it was too sweet by the end. The gelato was really nice though, not really much of a custard flavour, but definitely vanilla, also I love chocolate, oreo-like bases mmm.

Hiya friends, Stressed spelt backwards is desserts so to overcome my extreme stress from the uni finals I decided to indulge myself with GELATO! It was worth it! My favourite dessert place in the world is Messina and I would recommend it to anyone! This is actually my second Messina post and I think about Messina a lot - read it here ! Recently the annual Sydney Light festival Vivid special started and there was a Messina special of Psychedelic Psundaes and of course I was dying to try it out! Luckily I had the opportunity on Friday to try out these delicious Psundaes! Menu! Here is are the 4 different options they had for the Psundaes - yes it's a pretty pricey Psundae considering it's $10 EACH! So I would probably share one between 2 people but to be honest I think it's worth it! Blue gelato! The one we choose was the Silly Cone Chips which was swirled salted coconut and mango sorbet topped with choc chip cookies, blue popping candy and a banana-caramel filled cone. And boy i

Yum! I celebrated Australia Day in the city and it was awesome! I went into the Sydney Festival and I finally tried Messina! I ordered the “yeeeah dawgs! and the “so wrong its right” They were quite normal although many parts of Asia have already discovered ‘ice cream’ in bread as a good combination. The marshmallows tasted like bacon in the aftertaste, although I didn’t really like it. The potato hips dipped in gelato was probably the highlight of the “so wrong its right”. And as for the hot dog, it was quite normal. Messina is quite normal but the name has spread and so it was good to try it. yeeeah dawgs! milk chocolate gelato hot dog, served in a warm finger bun with passionfruit ‘mustard’, raspberry ‘ketchup’, buttercream ‘mayo’ and coconut ‘onions’- $9 “so wrong its right!” potato chips dipped in gelato with caramel sauce and bacon flavoured marshmellows- $9

The salted caramel gelato soft serve is to die for . I would eat buckets and buckets of this stuff if I could... it is lovely and distinct, saving the gelato from tasting too overly sweet. The amoretti biscuits were a bit damp and the cone itself wasn't immensely crispy but there's nothing much that can be done about that given

Oh boy, we revisited Gelato Messina at the Sydney Festival and tried the Nutty Piefessor. IT WAS REALLY GOOOOOD. Tasted a little bit like gaytime (my all time favourite). Definitely an enjoyable piece of 'pie' Peanut butter biscuit base layered with peanut custard, vanilla gelato, peanut crunch topped with whipped cream. Annnddd since there were no queues at Porteno, we got something to snack on! The chilli cheese fries. It's enjoyable but wasn't the best. *********** Visited: 11th January 2015. We are big fans of Gelato Messina, especially because of their weird and wacky inventions we get a chance to experience. Last year was the Messinawiener and the Yeeeah Dawg , the Kaledoscope Bombe, Silly Cone Chips, Psychedelic Spider and Trifley Trippy from Vivid 2014 and who can also forget the Potluck Pies at the Night Noodle Markets . It's really hard to say no to such creative inventions! We fail as foodies (sorry) as we only had enough room to fit two of the five desserts on the list. We HAD to choose The Royal with Cheese and the Not Chicken and Waffles. But we heard really good reviews of The Nutty Piefessor, so if you try it please let us know what you thought! Who knows, we might be back next week ;) The weather wasn't the best so we took shelter in a nearby tent to take pictures and eat away from the hustle and bustle of... a ghost town. There was barely anyone there on a Saturday Night! Gelato Messina normally has lines queuing up to the entrance of the event. Lets hope this was a result of the weather and not the actual food. Cute takeout boxes Messina! The Not Chicken and Waffles Don't be fooled, it may look like a deep-fried chicken drumstick but it is actually a deep-fried maple and pecan gelato served on a Belgium waffle with whisky caramel gravy! Unfortunately ours wasn't presented as well as most others, so it might not look as described. Thankfully the taste was still the same, this was by far the better of the two. The flavours worked well, but woul
The Hedonist Life
I don’t know if they’re holding all the top gelato scientists at gunpoint in the cellar but they never seem to run out of ideas, and they plan on changing the new menu up on the regular. So don’t waste anytime if you like what you see.
The Hedonist Life
With Sydney Festival running from the 9th of January till yesterday you had 17 days to to check out this epic carnival menu from Gelato Messina.
The Hedonist Life
To sum it up, I don’t really believe there are many people living in Sydney who haven’t tried Messina, and to eat Messina is to love Messina. So on the off chance you are one of those few people then do yourself a favour, cancel any plans you have tonight and get down there before they realise they could start charging $50 a scoop and people would be selling kidneys to just to get their fix.
Champagne And Chips
Whereas at the regular gelato store (which is anything but regular) the amazing flavour combinations are ready to scoop, the dessert bar has a selection of dips and toppings to make your own sundae. Firstly you select a base- there are the traditional cones or cups as well as some exciting alternatives like waffles or profiteroles. They have rotating flavours of soft serve- it was toasted macadamia and blood peach when I visited. Then there is an array of amazing toppings and dips.

I read about Gelato Messina for the first time on Urbanspoon as one of the best ranked restaurants/cafes in Sydney. To my delighted surprise, it is an ice cream shop specialising in awesome looking miniature ice cream cakes. I am really grateful to my partner (a non-foodie) who puts up with my innate cravings and ‘must-eat’ planned foodie outings whenever we go to Sydney, or anywhere really. Especially when it was pouring down with rain as we walked to Darlinghurst from the CBD. We finally found the little place that has the main ice cream shopfront and the cake shop next door. I just wanted to buy up ALL the mini cakes. They’re gorgeous! We only tried one (after filling up with 2 scoops of ice cream from the main shop). I picked the cutest (and last) one – Dr Evil’s Magic Mushroom (and now my profile picture). The ingredients help sheet pointed out what was inside the mushroom. It was caramel/chocolatey/icecream goodness. I really liked the peanut butter cookie and green popping candy. All elements together = a brilliant combination! Can’t wait to go back and try out the other delectable goodies. Foodgasm 8/10

Let me introduce you guys to my favourite gelato joint in Sydney. The place is called Gelato Messina and it's located on Victoria St, Darlinghurst. Now I've done my fair share of travels around Italy, and have tasted my fair share of gelatos and so far, Messina is the only place that lives up to my expectations of a good gelato. I personally prefer gelato over ice cream (although I still really love ice cream) because I like the smooth texture of the gelato and how that brings out the flavour of the ingredients better than the milky, slightly frosted texture of ice cream. When I was travelling around Italy it was summertime so I ate gelato whenever and wherever I could find them! My absolute favourite flavour is (and always will be) "Fior di latte" which literally means "milk flower" (which they don't have anywhere in Sydney...can someone find me a place that sells this flavour?). To me it tastes like vanilla milkshake!!! Yum! Fior di latte from Grom, a popular Italian gelateria (this

I'm not much of an ice-cream person. I know, I know: disgrace to womankind. HOWEVER, when there is awesomeness available, I will partake. Right in the guts of Darlinghurst is Gelato Messina , one of the better (and most-revered) frozen-sweetness-peddlers in the country. Nick Palumbo's obsession with gelato began as a teen. In 2002, he established Gelato Messina and is still a co-owner.

The meringue was exquisite. It had a firm and bouncy consistency while adding a sugary pop to each spoonful. I wish the whole cake was covered in meringue, as it was just so intriguing and unique. I am looking forward to trying their Bombe Alaska

Look for the crowds, join the queue and get to work on narrowing down your selection from the regular and specials menu. Next up was a trip to the ever so popular Gelato Messina, just a bit down the street from Mad Pizza. It wasn’t the best idea to grab two scoops after a filling lunch, but I don’t frequent the area regularly, so why not? I had a double scoop of Tiramisu and Salted Caramel with White Chocolate Chip, while my friend chose the peanut butter choc flavour. I can’t wait for my next trip to try out the Salted Coconut & Mango – I’m up for anything peculiar!

...every restaurant within a 1 km of a Gelato Messina shouldn’t even bother to offer desserts on their menu because there is simply nothing that could bring a sweeter end to a meal than this ice cream institution in Darlinghurst. When it’s been a while between scoops I drive past Darlinghurst’s queues for gelato and think, ‘Those people must be mad. No gelato is worth queueing like that for.’ But then I sneak in myself for a post Fu Manchu treat and I’m reminded at the delectable selection of what is Sydney’s best gelati. Gelato Messina Menu I, like half the city, am obsessed with peanut butter based desserts so consequently my eyes zip straight to the specials board to check out the latest concotions. Gelato Messina is arguably the finest gelato in the land... The flavour profiles are breathtaking. Gelato Messina have already achieved a cult status in Sydney and have hit Melbourne with a crescendo...

Sydneysiders can easily recognise those orange and green tubs of creamy gellato full of such inspiring 40 gourmet flavours in Darlinghurst, Surrey Hills and Bondi. Its a very close call, and I can see why there’s always a queue even in winter, but I think I’ll go out on a limb here and say that texturally I slightly prefer Cow and Moon. The difficulties of fabulous choices.

Gelato Messina definitely sets the benchmark for gelato in Australia with over 40 flavours to choose from. They use ingredients in their raw and natural form and make everything from scratch. They have a range of both classic and 'special' flavours to choose from so there's definitely something there that will suit each individual.

Every Tuesday night coming home from tennis the street outside Messina is teeming with people. Summer or winter, no matter how cold, the place is packed and I’ve never been. Salted Caramel gelato it must be then. It is their best seller after all. The perfect follow-on from tapas at Foley Lane. Overwhelmed with a decadent choice of flavours, it’s all I can do to stay focussed on salted caramel. Ummmm… and I
I'm Still Hungry
In true Messina style, all combinations have whacky names that ensures they are not forgotten. The honey I burnt the kids combination is all about burning and smoking.

I liked it, but I didn’t like it a lot. The smoky fudge was a bit too bitter, while the vanilla gelato was literally and figuratively a bit too vanilla – I didn’t taste any of the smokiness I was led to expect.
I'm Still Hungry
This is the favourite of the day, for sure. What made this pluto pup so good was that despite knowing what it’s made out of, it didn’t actually taste all that fatty. Quite refreshing, surprisingly. Especially so, considering how the pancake batter is fairly thick (versus other fried ice creams), but incredibly moreish. It’s soft, but doesn’t give way to the ice cream so easily.
Thecasualfoodblogger
There was plenty of pureed mango in my ice cream and a delicious coconut flavour as well. The salt gave it a bit of a bi-carbonate of soda flavour (sounds odd, I know, but it was in a good but unusual way). I really enjoyed this unusual flavour and will definitely be back for more!

We’re crazy about Gelato Messina (but then again who isn’t?) – We kinda demolished every single one of their sundaes at the last vivid event and they’ve caught on that there’s serious demand – and now you have; Messina Dessert Bar. About $10, you get some sorta whacko Messina Soft serve with bits and bobs of deliciousness. They’ve got great softserve game and are currently showing everyone else; why they’re the leaders in the pack. Concurrent to this review was 2014′s NightNoodle Markets – so we’re going to plonk a pic of their treats at end. They’re also great. Messina brings their joy around town. The creative lab is still there; but Messina Dessert Bar is now front and center at the victoria street shop. Enter the store and you’ll see a fairyflosser (L), popcorn machine and a candy station. This is the dessert bar. We’ve only ordered from this suggestive sundae list ever and everything we’ve eaten has been delicious. You can however make your own and this is what you’re looking at. Sugary magical bits. There isn’t very much value describing each item on the Messina Dessert Bar venue but know this. They were all incredible in their own way and tasted delightful. Anytime Anyday. This is Messina knocking the softserve market on the side and doing a homerun. We hit 2014′s Night Noodle Markets for a few things and we had these 3 out of the 4 desserts they had here. $9 each with a giant cookie. You won’t see them again but suffice to say, they brought their funky flavours and cute names – Phuc King Delicious to the table. We loved it. Deliciousness beckons. LINKS http://www.gelatomessina.com/messina-dessert-bar/

Gelato Messina is a perfect end to a date, a dinner with friends, or even just an excursion in itself on any night of the week. Everytime we visited, the place was pumping. The upbeat house music is what you might expect in a bar on a Friday night, but it suits GM because it’s fun and energising – which is what I want to feel when eating gelato! Getting served can be a challenge as it’s not exactly a queue/numbered system, but I’ve never had to wait more than 5 minutes. You are able to try before you buy (I always end up buying what I try!) and you can take away tubs.

My fav picks are the Coconut & Mango and Apple Pie - together they taste realllly good. I still prefer the texture of N2 over Messina, but many of the flavours at Messina are much more complex and refined which I think many people appreciate more.

And they did not fail to impress me, next door I was amazed at the splendid ice cream cake concoctions. I just wanted to try the Samurai or the Itty Bitty. But we opt for a scoop in waffle cones. I got a Hazelnut and Bien got a Salted Caramel with White Chocolate. We both really indulged in the gelato. Absolutely amazing, I will probably pay visits at the store at Pyrmont.
They have a selection of yummy gelati, beautifully presented, some of them, I have to warn you, pretty rich ;) . They have appealing and creative names too, such as salted caramel with white chocolate chips, dulce de leche, sexy chocolate or lime cheesecake.

Unlike the Pyrmont location, this one at Darlinghurst and Surry Hills are considered the experimental twins, they both churn out both classic and avant-garde gelato with creative quips. I was very surprised when I heard Gelato Messina was a very popular gelato shop because Mr C and I have walked past it a lot of times at Star City but never realised! It always looked empty in the Star City store… The thumbnail is Salted Caramel with White Chocolate (sorry for the horrible photos) . This was Mr C’s choice and is apparently the most popular flavour in the store! When Mr C first told me the name of the gelato he was going to order, I instantly thought of macarons from Adrianos. The flavouring was quite sweet because of the pieces of white chocolate, but I loved the salted caramel taste to it! Just wished it was frozen a bit more as it was a bit runny when we purchased it. Tiramisu My gelato. It was between green tea and tiramisu but Mr C and I always have green tea ice cream so I went for the tiramisu this time! I was super happy with mine, I loved the pieces of tiramisu cake inside, and it was freshly made from the machine when I bought it ! This surprisingly tastes yum

Let me introduce you guys to my favourite gelato joint in Sydney. The place is called Gelato Messina and it’s located on Victoria Ave, Darlinghurst. Now I’ve done my fair share of travels around Italy, and have tasted my fair share of gelatos and so far, Messina is the only place that lives up to my expectations of a good gelato. My absolute favourite flavour is (and always will be) “Fior di latte” which literally means “milk flower” (which they don’t have anywhere in Sydney…can someone find me a place that sells this flavour?). To me it tastes like vanilla milkshake!!! Yum! Fior di latte from Grom, a popular Italian gelateria (this

The Messina shop is tiny for the constant charge of punters it attracts. Imaginative specials keep connoisseurs returning – great minds have concocted ‘Mr Potato Head’, (peanut butter, gelato with potato chips dipped in white chocolate), ‘Prune and Cognac’ and ‘Muummamm.com’, (coconut custard sorbet with banana jam and fried bits). The ice cream is beautifully balanced on trays in giant ‘scoops’ – always check which are gluten free, though the majority are. Cones are obviously off the menu for gluten free types.

It was very cool (pun intended!) that some of the small cakes were being made on counters right next to the entrance to the lab. My friend P., who'd met up with me for an ice cream date, and I watched the making of the 'Samurai' for a while, before proceeding to the main store for some gelato!

They taste exactly like described, but it would've been a better experience if the cake was still in original form after taking it home with me; with the tempered chocolate "cheese" having a nice crack, and the financier bun being a tad bit less soggy, and all that jazz. Despite the slight dilemma, Gelato Messina is definitely a place I'll come back to from time to time. And not to worry, the two teachers didn't miss out, because I gave them an also food-related present a few weeks after, which I will post about soon :)
Cameras And Cuisines
Gelato Messina is a gelateria that makes all their gelato from raw and natural ingredients, from scratch! They'll even bake their own apple pie and brownies in-house, just to create them in gelato form. With over 30 flavours to choose from at a busy store front, it can get difficult deciding on just one scoop. I found the prices to be reasonable at $3.90 for a single, $4.90 for double. I was quite stuffed from the dessert cakes (below) and wanted something on the lighter side, so we ended up deciding on the popular Coconut Lychee and the White Peach. Both were delicious, but I need to come back for more indulgent flavours next time! I do have a complaint though, for being the best gelato place in Sydney, their waffle cones weren't very memorable. They can work on that one. Royale W' Cheese ($11.90 Aud) Next

Peanut butter florentine was my darling. Its extremity point almost surpasses the point of acceptability into excessiveness but instead, falls between the cracks into the realm of it’s so bad it’s good. If you're a gelato enthusiast, then you surely would know Messina. Located on the busy strip of Victoria Street, it's gelato shop front and laboratory are housed side by side. It is never too cold for ice cream. Or in this case, gelato . Messina sure isn't short in creativity department, and the gelato cakes are too beautiful too eat.

Everyone who loves ice-cream should know of this namesake by now - and if not, then now you will!...With a "Creative department" on hand in their HQ I'd imagine these guys in their stripy shirts, their thinking caps on and are constantly delivering new delicious flavours daily and really, they are just are mind blowing mix-ups. Recently Messina posted on their Facebook the 'LITTLE BLOKE - a peanut butter gelato with Malt-o-milk biscuits and Nutella fudge.' which sounds so dreamy already.

At least in my end of Darlinghurst, on the restaurant strip along Darlinghurst road, establishments rise, fall or relocate. Phamish relocated, Una's is at a decline (post-Maggie's splintering to Potts Point), and the cousins Omerta and A Tavola have risen in recent years. In the last nine years though, one business has firmly taken root. I say with little hesitation that Messina is a Darlinghurst institution. Also the 3rd largest city in Sicily. Testament to this are the crowds that invariably gather at various hours of the evening. Typical evenings will see the counter swamped by people two-deep; admiring the flavours, getting taste tests or swiftly being served. Patrons served will usually mill about outside; the lucky ones will have one of the three tables outside. So is it worthy of all this fanfare? Or is this a curiousity feedback loop? Hardly. The other flavour I tried was their signature Salted Caramel. Again, no flimsy flavours here, it tastes like…..Salted Caramel!! BF even said that it’s a bit too strong but I quite like it. I hate ice-creams (or gelato) with flavour you can only pick up after being told what flavour to ‘expect’ or from reading what written on the label. Go Gelato Messina!

Tip number three, make room for desserts. For me, there is always room for dessert! After all the savoury goodies, it was time to sweeten it up and just chill. I decided to relax at Gelato Messina, home of the best Gelato in Sydney!

I called in advance to reserve the cake of my choice; Dr Evil's Magic Mushroom. Now I could describe the gelato cake for you, but I thought a copy & paste job from their website would be more appropriate given its ingredients:

The top dome of this cake is filled with Dr Evil gelato (dark chocolate gelato, peanut cookies and dulce de leche) and is topped with layers of vanilla cream, chocolate sponge, a red ganache, and white chocolate buttons to finish. The stalk is filled with dulce de leche caramel surrounded by dark chocolate gelato. The whole mushroom sits upon ‘grass’ made from popping candy and crushed biscuit.

So understandably, we were stared at by many, MANY passersby. Hell, random people were even taken photos of us eating that cake inside of Messina's Creative Department. In the end, the race between the four of us to finish our mammoth portions was an epic failure for all as the closest any of us got to finishing ended halfway down the mushroom stalk.

Was it creati

Having read about this gelatarium on other posts, we are blissfully aware of the wonderful flavours available, so choosing wasn't a problem (except for the fact that Elvis Lives was absent). However, communication was. From me. Oops. Wanting to order one waffle cone each of coconut pandan and banana bread, the server instead gives me a double-scooped cone of the two flavours. After correcting my apparently confusing sentence structure, she gets the order right and we now have one cone each as intended. Praise the almighty gelato Lord!

Gelato Messina seemed like a logical first choice, considering the quality of their produce and for not being situated too far away from King Cross station. We each opt for our own single scoops ($3.90). My tourist friend was quite pleased with the tiramisu flavour that he’d selected.

Posted by swisscheese on Oct 24, 2014 in gelato , pavlova , sydney | Subscribe After dinner at Una’s Restaurant , my sisters and I were walking around and we saw many people lining up for gelato. It was none other than the oh-so-famous Gelato Messina! Gelato Messina Shop 1/241 Victoria St, Darlinghurst NSW 2010 1800 435 286 This branch is quite a huge one as they have one dessert store serving cakes and pavlovas while another is an ice-cream bar. There are very limited seats available but thankfully, we got a table! Since both my sisters were still full from dinner, I got myself a Slivkova Pavlova , which comprises of vanilla gelato with a sponge base, topped with freeze dried raspberry jelly and passionfruit dusted French Meringue. Quite a unique gelato, I must say!! I love how attractive each gelato pavlova turns out to be! Though the meringue component is always the sweetest, I can deal with it! For such a small portion, paying AUD$11.90 is for definitely for the quality, not quantity. This glorious bout of summer we’re having calls for gelato and more gelato. Like a scoop of Messina’s salted caramel & white chocolate topped with another scoop of peanut butter.

But what I’ve come for are the laboratorio’s novelty ice cream cakes. We picked the mini-me which looked like a toadstool – it had a heart of salted caramel and popping candy cereal for ‘grass’. There were plenty to choose from including little hamburger cakes and mini bombe alaskas. Even better, these mini cakes come in upsized versions!!

Gelato connoisseurs Messina have expanded into a Dessert Bar, conveniently located next door to their original Darlinghurst store – just look for the neon sign. The make your own Messina sundae bar is a choose-your-own adventure – think adult in a candy store with fancy toppings and additions. It’s simple, pick your base – cup, cone or carb. Yes, carb – you can pick a crepe, choux puff or doughnut to begin your adventure. Might as well go all out! Next you pick your gelato; there are two options and they’ll change monthly. We chose between burnt vanilla and Fanta (if you can’t choose, why not have both?) Finally, you can throw on a few toppings and additions that are just a little bit fancy.

Avoid this place. Either I have bad taste or I'm just unlucky. I tried the fairy floss cone and it was horrendous. Apart from it melting profusely all over me, the soft serve was tasteless, overpriced ($10), cone soggy and choc coating was boring. The only thing enjoyable was the fairy floss but this is messina (gelato the star?). If you want a cone go to maccas otherwise just skip this store to go for the messina gelato next door. The other dessert I tried was also overpriced and boringly sweet (eating sugar).

Candi delight. I got the "Carni Candi" which is filled with fanta sorbet, redskin custard, strawberries & cream jellies. It is covered in chocolate & topped with fairy floss. Yes, it was amazing and yes, I think I have diabetes now.

The Rare Kind in a Good Way. I had two scoops of gelato here at a reasonable price of $6. A minute or two later, I had my first documented case of sugar high, with uncontrollable smiling and generally good mood. It is not easy for food to achieve such on its own. Messina can do this.

Everything is awesome. Ok, so not everything will be awesome to everyone but surely there is a flavour for you at Messina. This mecca of gelato is all about flavour experimentation and their presentation cakes. I find the cakes hefty in price but then you can see the man hours that go into them and it's less surprising they cost that much. The scoops of glorious gelato in such varied flavours are a real treat in Sydney summer. The staff will let you try a flavour if you're a bit of a wuss and that to me is service. Salted caramel and apple pie is my thing. Don't forget people, quality isn't often cheap.

Worth the hype.... Gelato Messina has made me into a big ice cream/gelato snob over the years. I'm always impressed by how 'real' the flavours taste. And between the standard 40ish flavours and the rotating specials board, you'll never run out of things to try! There's a good variety for vegans too with a wide range of excellent sorbets, including several less citrusy ones such as chocolate and salted coconut+mango.

With so much choice, picking a few flavours will always be a bit of a random stab. That said, I would suggest the Pannacotta and Fig flavour to anyone who wants to know what Messina is all about - it's both creative and extremely delicious! If you are here with a partner or a few friends, a good option is to get a misto platter or litre tub to share. The misto gets you five mini scoops of your choice. The litre tub gets you four flavours. Get at least one sorbet and at least one special. Trust me.

One downside is that there isn't much seating in the shop. The queues always move quicker than I expect. The front-of-shop staff do everything at a million miles per hour but are generally very helpful and accomodating, especially given that the shop is almost always busy.

Devoted customers. It takes a lot for me to join a queue for something, OK maybe when boarding a aircraft. Thats what happens here. The Darlo hipsters line up like pension day at the bank. WTF it's fringing icecream or maybe it's the place to be seen later in the evening.

You really don't know exactly what you're going to get until you actually tuck into Messina's ice creams, but one thing for sure is that it will be a creative, ingenious, totally indulgent and yummy experience. Messina has been a wonderful addition to Sydney's dessert menus in recent years.

The Best in Sydney. They've got the weirdest specials, but surprisingly good!

Long wait but worthwhile. Little shop tucked away on the street. The queue made it easy to find. We were waiting for about 15 minutes to enter. A friendly server gave us a menu while we waited. The gelato is good! Maybe the best in Sydney so far. Salted caramel was a letdown (too bland) but the other 4 flavours we sampled were very finely crafted indeed. Order off the special menu. The staff here, all girls, are very friendly and warm despite the seemingly non stop crowd.

Yes this is nice icecream. However, the wait in the queue is ridiculous, as is the way that the queue obstructs pedestrians at both the Darlinghurst & Surry Hills stores. Almost need a "crowd control" barrier. Also disappointed that out of all the flavours they do, they don't do banana. Salted caramel was too sweet. Berry yoghurt was nice.

What's the fuss?. Messina has tasty ice-cream, that is without doubt. Messina also is overhyped. Nonetheless, the majority vote is always right, and the same folk that queue outside Mamak must be the ones queuing at Messina. Why? Because it's "the best". This seems to be the modus operandi of what constitutes "best" in Sydney. Throw in a few bloggers who claim they are independent (how do you really know? You don't...), and watch the sheep flock to whatever is being hyped, ready to part with their money. But it tastes good? Hey, that's just your opinion. Motivating sheeple is too easy and so predictable that it's not even funny anymore. Meanwhile, those in the know would confess without guilt that Melbourne, even Perth, has good, no, better food than the over-hyped nonsense here. Look, it's good, but it is hardly queue worthy. Stop trying hard to be special now. If you so desperately crave attention, set-up a pay-per-view webcam website. At least you get paid for all this trouble. Even just getting a life would be a good start. In writing this, I laughed so hard I regret not wearing diapers.

Overrated. What we liked: Good icecream cakes - this is a niche since nobody else makes them on this scale and with this much intricacy. We tried the strawberry fields and hazelnut i/c cake. The strawberry fields was delicious, with a thin wafer-like outer crust and fresh strawberry sauce on top. The truffles atop the hazelnut cake were gorgeous melt-in-your-mouth stuff, but the biscuit around the cake was rock hard and required hammering to break. The gelato inside was good, but unremarkable.

What we didn't like: The gelato is tasty and creamy, but too sweet. We tried the poached figs and marsala and pistachio. The pistachio gelato has a strong European nutty flavour, which is great, but I had difficulty finishing a single scoop (and I LOVE sweet). The poached figs also is a unique, beautiful flavour... Alas, too sweet again.

Overall - Good icecream cakes. Average gelato, I have definitely tasted better. Would we go back? Maybe, but the hype definitely belies the real experience.

The Best. Is there a chance I could have a franchise in SA. I am a chef and what you do at Messina is fantastic

Heaven...... BEST IN THE WORLD!

A Gold Mine. The list of new specials every week are the cherry on top for me.
Montgomerys Gold Mine - best ive ever had
closely followed by Twixed, in which i had last night.

The line is always long, and for good reason, theres just no gelati in sydney that compares.
The salted caramel with white chocolate loured me in, and the assortment of other innovative flavours left me no choice but to be there almost every week.

Need back the ingredients list. Arrgghh, Messina used to have a list which showed which icecreams had egg and gluten etc in them and they dont have it anymore and the staff now know nothing about the list and dont really care if you are trying to avoid an ingredient! I know they are busy and dont have time for questions - so please just bring back the ingredients list so we know what we're eating. Thanks :-)

Awesome. One of the best dessert place I've been to. Very creative ice cream with amazing flavours in your mouth! It can get pretty packed, but its definitely worth the wait. Would visit it again very soon!
Kathleen
Adventurous Flavours. Great Gelato experience with an excellent range of unique flavors to try each time you visit.

If there's a queue their Dessert shop is worth trying. It's great, if not better.

Try the daily special for the Gelato and the Samurai Sword from the dessert shop.

Top 3 Best Gelato in Sydney.....

3. Messina
2. The best gelato in Sydney without a doubt. Parking can be an issue but its worth the laps trying to find a spot for one of these gelato s

Best ice cream in the whole world!. Since discovering Messina after moving to Sydney recently, my man and I are so addicted we visit a few times every week, alternating between the Surry Hills and Darlinghurst stores. Messina certainly deserves all its rave reviews and label as the best ice cream in Australia - the flavour combinations are inspired and just taste incredible. I love trying the rotating flavours every week, but also still get a scoop of the divine salted caramel and white chocolate. Don't be put off by the constant queue snaking out from the stores - the staff are super efficient which means that you will never be waiting long. Plus you need the queue time to agonise over which flavour to choose today!
Thatgrlisa
Really nice gelato! Find that the tiramisu is very sweet though but still great in taste!
PCsydneyfood
Creamy delicious goodness. Nothing tops messinas! there is always a line out the door but there are samples being handed out so the line moves very fast. and let me tell you, its SO WORTH IT. for the price, you won't get any better gelato in sydney. don't even try! They also switch up their special flavours and i have never tried a bad one yet!
Kitty
A Litte Bit Of Magic. Such a cute cute ice cream place. Mini ice cream mushrooms are the go here!
Kevin Yong
A Real Treat. I just love two top flavours - salted caramel and white choc, plus the salted coconut and mango. Contrasting, surprising, soothing and delightful.
Stephanie
Messina Gelato gives a whole new meaning to ice cream!!! Apple pie flavour is AMAZING!!!!!!
Melrose
Best gelato ever! Please come to the north shore!!!
Naomi Robinson
PLEASE can we have a Messina in South Australia. Visiting from interstate, staying in the Darlinghurst area. Found Messina - it then became a MUST every day we were there. It truly is THE best gelato and ice cream I have EVER had - and I AM an "Ice-cream-aholic". Just one concern - PLEASE Messina - can you open a shop in Adelaide? PLEASE?
Jamie's Girls
You can't beat it. This place is fantastic. The flavors are all unique but really delicious. The service is fast and courteous and it's reasonably priced. You will NOT find better gelato anywhere, at least not in Sydney.
Frangipane_
Salivating. BEST GELATO EVERRRR!!!! The place was so packed but it was worth it...so many flavours to choose from....had the pistachio gelato and it was amazing! And for such a good price :)
Sweet_tooth
Yummy!. I was not disappointed at all! there were so many flavours to choose from and each flavour I tasted was like heaven in my mouth! :)
Foodpornjournal
Walked here from the CBD just to see and try out the cute little creations. The Dr Evil's mushroom gelato cake was so cute and tasty :) massive selection of other gelato in the regular shop as well. Can't wait to go back and try out more!
DD888
Gotta Try!. This place has a great selection of flaours and very rarely dissapoints
Laura Seymour
Worth the drive!!. My partner and i got gelato from here solely based on the reviews. SO WORTH IT. I had a special flavour 'Dr Evil' chocolate gelato, magnificent!
Ben
Ice cream everyday. I love Messina!! It's so amazing and delicious. I love trying the new flavours. It's too good! Favourite usual flavours are Coconut & pandan, Chocolate sorbet, and Italian nougat. Favourite specials so far Musk, Coconut rough & New York Cheesecake.
Theresa Napoli
Best Gelato...and I know Gelato. Having tried and tested some of the best Gelato in Sydney over nine years....Messina has finally taken the crown! It leaps and bounds the competition with their diverse flavour range, and creative gelato making skills.

A personal favourite for all the lactose-free people out there is the chocolate sorbet, which is so rich and full in flavour, you do not miss that milk!
Tintin
Messina is my life. BEST GELATO IN AUSTRALIA! After I've discovered messina I haven't been able to have any other gelato from somewhere else. Adventurous flavours, fresh ingredients, friendly service!
Fiona Brennan
Tastes like heaven. I've been to this Gelato Messina a few times now, and the quality never fails to impress me. The great range of flavours and the variety of the specials is also something to note. The raspberry gelato may seem like a boring choice, but it's actually incredible- sweet, but it still maintains a kind of tart undertone.

However, the crowds are a ridiculous length! Not that I should criticize it for its popularity, but you do have to wait an awfully long time to be served sometimes.
Anna Rodin
Best Gelato in Australia. I went to Italy this year and went on a gastronomic gelato experience in every city, particularly in rome where you'll find not only Giolitti near the Parthenon but several other amazing places as well and I've tried things like meringue, profiterole, kinder bueno and more crazy flavours you can count. I gotta say that Messina is pretty spot on when it comes to bringing the same thing to Sydney. Absolutely delicious silky gelato, made with fresh ingredients and new, crazy flavours every week.
For first timers I recommend you try: Apple Pie, Salted Caramel, Cherry or one of the specials, you will not be disappointed.
My fave special so far has been Melba's Peachy that tastes like a Peach Melba but I gotta say it was a tough competition between that and the goat's cheese, quince and walnut gelato which sounds gross but is SO divine.
Anyway, great place and gets pretty crowded but it doesn't matter because they serve the ice-cream as quickly as it comes out of the machines that you can watch. Be sure to try the affogato with a scoop of vanilla if you're a coffee fan and pop by next door to see what's cookin in the lab. XD

miglior Gelato Artigianale a Sydney :)
Nate W
The ice cream smells plasticky for me.

Lots of people flock here, I don't know why, maybe because Leonardo DiCaprio liked their Facebook page.

Anyways, I prefer WowCow.
Jessie Lee
Amazing! The most delicious gelato around... ANd cheap!
THEJUGERNAUTS
Yeah. Best gelato in australia is about right. I'd eat here everyday but then I'd be a balloon. Amazing stuff. huge serves too. PLEASE OPEN ONE IN NEWTOWN.
Rosa Nguyen
I love love love love Hazelnut flavour. It reminded me of this gorgeous hazelnut cream. They serve quite quickly and I adore how they offer samples of flavours before we commit.
Gary72
Ice cream and gelato galore!!. Great selection and wonderful service.
Kate Dougherty
Incredible!. Hands down the best ice cream of my life! From a sometimes over zealous lover of ice-cream who has lived in Italy - i don't make such a grand statement lightly! I was taken here by a friend when i was visiting sydney and was left speechless! Tried the 'hawaiian' from the specials board (white chocolate and coconut ice-cream with pineapple cake and jam), the salted caramel and white chocolate and the pear and rhubarb. All were delicious. Im still having dreams about it! haha
Shanice
Grew up with my parent's owning a great gelato place when I was a kid but... Messina is the best Gelato EVER I think!!! Can't wait to go back for more
Coffee Cynic
BEST ICECREAM. I have been strongly hinting to everyone around me that I wanted to go to Messina and finally after MONTHS, I found myself inside the little space that is Messina. They have a great range of flavours, including a board of specials that changes regularly. Best icecream out! The chocolate fondant is intensely chocolately without being overly sweet and the tiramisu with chunks of biscuit was a great balance of chocolate and alcohol flavour, I'm salivating just thinking about it! The staff are so great, even offering us some freshly churned raspberry icecream , which was delish!! Can't wait to return!
Jono C
Worth it winter and summer. Will change your perspective on ice cream - don't be put off by the queue it moves quickly and the flavours are phenomenal. worth it!!!
Pat G
I never thought I would be able to say this so definetively but, here it goes. Best ice-cream in Sydney. Yes, that's right, the best. Huge selection of obscure flavours (My personal favourite = Pear and Rhubarb) for a very reasonable price ($3.90 for 1 large scoop). I cant help but laugh when I see how busy wow-cow is just up the road. Come here, leave satisfied.
Deb
Busy summer and winter but queue moves quickly. Excellent quality gelato and sorbet. Check the blackboard for specials. Worth the walk from Kings Cross.
Hannah Walter
A must visit! If Im ever I'm hospital I'll be happy to have heaps of the ice cream! Try the coconut flavour;)
Lala
Hello Italy. Not sure if Gelato gets better than this - love the huge range of amazing flavours, and the price is more than fair.
SteveO
Forget the other "gelato" places around the city, this is the real deal. Amazing flavours are blended behind the glass wall at the rear of the shop, doesn't get fresher than that.
Grapsta
Best gelato ever.love the fig and mascarpone
Wilburforce
Bellisimo. The girlfriend drags me here all the time - and I LOVE it. Amazing flavours, huge variety and amazingly good value for the $10 boxes. Only problem is when they are busy the gelato can get a bit soft - but that's a minor quibble. Get here if you have not already. Service is great too despite being busy.
Princess
Chilled. The service at Messina is fab, as they let you try any gelato flavour you want. Although there is minimal setting available its worth going there for the mini me and gelato.
Eatwithoutbeingsorry
The best pandan & coconut lychee gelato in town!!. The best gelato house in Sydney!
Sydney Snacker
Trendiest gelato joint in town. You may have to fight your way past the indie elite of darlinghurst, but once you make it to the counter you will be handsomely rewarded with gelato heaven! Try the salted caramel or the almond and milk chocolate - or else check the specials board for fun new flavours. Reasonably priced quality gelato - a great place to take your date after dinner in darlo :)
1 Good Meal
Even in winter this is the place to go to on victoria street for desert. Push ur way to the counters & feast ur eyes on over 30 flavours of gelato all made in the store. Be sure to check out the specials board with new experimental flavours each week. A recurring favourite is Yalla Habibi containing figs, almonds, yoghurt, rose water gelato mmmmm. Or for something sweet yet very sour try the exquisite blood orange.
Mad_hatter3
Amazing. Pretty sure i don't have to talk this up at all-it's always spectacular. i also love that the specials board lets me go more often than i should
AliceRob
So many people there on a Friday night, it all looked promising until I had the chocolate passion fruit special icecream. It had a very strange flour texture to it and was not pleasant at all!
Jerry
Simply the best. Packed with flavour. Amazing selection. What else can i say? Definately try it for yourself!
Brian Pickett
I second the best gelato in Sydney reviews. Great variety of flavors - wife loved the salty caramel. Pistachio and coffee were off the charts. Skip the restaurant desert and go here.
Sawbones
Al I can say is Pistacho.... Al I can say is Pistachio and Salted Caramel!!!!
The Sneaky Pigeon
ORGASMIC. Wish I lived in Sydney so I could eat here everyday *sigh*
Pablo Silveira
Best gelato place in Sydney, hands down.
Coffeeaddict
Yum. One word:- YUM!
The gelato is gorgeous !!!
Sash
I was appalled at the service I received their today by the man who works there. He was downright rude. I actually felt the need to leave without buying anything there.
Let Them Eat Cake
Oh my! I just Love this place. Had the white violet. Absolutely amazing. Please keep this as regular!
Aaron Wallis
This place is off-the-chart Awesome!!! Siscilian Triffle, Peanutbutter & Jelly and their chocolate and absinthe flavours are easy favorites.

In a hot day like today nothing is better than an original Brazilian açaí with granola. But as I'm not in Brazil, my options are frozen yogurt from Wowcow or gelatos from Messina. Due to the variety of flavours I chose Messina. I could also order a yogurt gelato. :)
Rob Pickavance
Possibly the best gelato in town, always with a few "out of the ordinary" flavours. Highly recommend the "salty caramel & white chocolate" and "peanut butter & jelly sandwich". Great service, and all made on the premises! A regular haunt as it's just around the corner. Always busy .. and deservedly so!
Cathy Xiao Chen
Omg pecan pie flavour! BELLISSIMO!
Penny
Amazing best gelato outside Italy!
Laura Farmer
Loved the pandang coconut and the giandiua and cannot wait to go back and try the peanut butter and Ginger bread
Nusi
Nusi. Honestly i wasn't impressed with the artificial flavours, coloring and the freshness of your gelato,-may not evrybody knows about gelato, but i do and i certainly wont go back again.Sorry.
Hans Molleman
Second-best gelato in Sydney. Love the coconut-pandang. great for getting desert after dinner in the neighbourhood . Orange-chocolate has a bit of a funny texture.
Josh
Gelato Messiah!. I used to walk down here from five-ways almost every day of my three months in Sydney. They serve a delicious chilled treat, and the ambience is not unlike the milk bar in Clockwork Orange.
