Review Fortune Village Chinese Restaurant - Sydney

Lisa
The most perfect service from the diligent staff here! Lovely space to dine in as well with a clear theme and elegant vibe. Would highly recommend. The Chinese food here is flavourful, savoury and absolutely delicious (reminds me of my mom’s cooking!)

First time here. Great atmosphere. Our host understands his business. He provided great food and great customer service. No wonder it was packed. He helped choose some of our dishes too. He made some very delicious recommendations. The bill for 4 with drinks and dessert was very reasonable. Very enjoyable. Will definitely be back.

My family and I dined here last Sat night for my daughters birthday. The staff could not have been more lovely. It was a busy night and they were clearly understaffed, but they were attentive, polite and grateful for our patience. The food was top rate and the quality high. We were so impressed with them and grateful for all their hard work and care. It really is a wonderful family restaurant of a very high standard. Well Done!

I found Fortune Village via recommendations on the web and what a great find! We were a group of 14, with a few special dietary requirements looking for a place central for all, and with round tables (much more social this way). Simon and Mandy provided me great advice prior to the night, helping me design a menu that catered to all needs, taking away any stress on the night itself. Mandy and crew ensured we had a truly comfortable and delightful night with amazing food. Ambience was great, service was amazing and very attentive but in no way intrusive. We all had a great time and I can't recommend this place more highly! Thank you Simon, Mandy and team.

I would like to give a special thank you to Simon and the staff who worked very hard in making our evening special. Not only was the food absolutely delicious, but the service was amazing to match. I cannot recommend this place enough whether it's for a special occasion or a quick lunch/dinner. If you go here, you are guaranteed an incredible night! I will definitely come back again.

From the minute we walked in the door, the staff were friendly helpful and attentive. They helped us choose dishes for my daughters birthday table and special dinner for my husband and I. The food was absolutely delicious and very ample portions. The atmosphere was fantastic, friendly and it appears it is a very popular place. They even made my daughter feel special with ice-cream and singing happy birthday from the whole restaurant. Such a fantastic restaurant. Can't recommend it enough. Absolutely loved it!!

We came here just by convenience on a work trip. Simon the owner made us feel extremely welcome and helped us with our order. The place has such a relaxing and comfortable atmosphere, it’s a lovely place to have a meal. Well worth a trip if you’re in the area!

Deluxe fried rice paired very well with beef in black bean sauce, which was fantastic! Best I’ve ever had anywhere, and we eat out ALOT. Was disappointed though with the salt & pepper shrimp. For my taste, the batter coating is too viscous (so it makes too heavy a coating, & retains too much oil), and should use corn starch instead of flour. But I was very pleased with the meal and will return.

The best ever Chinese meal that I have eaten and I have travelled a lot on this earth. If ever I revisit Sydney this will be my first port of call. The ambience, the staff and more so the food are on another level. Best best ever.

I just had to review this amazing restaurant. Firstly the service was amazing, the owner brilliant. The food just amazing, we left the choices of food to our lovely friendly owner, his choices did not disappoint. Fast efficient, nothing too much trouble. Would recommend this establishment with more than a rating 10. So impressed with the way he treated everyone like you were royalty. Close walk up from Darling Harbour ...well worth a visit.

I haven’t even had a bite of my food yet and I already know it’ll be delicious! I was offered wine whilst I waited for my takeout. Told to take my time when making a decision for dinner. Such beautiful friendly service and I can sure smell that the food is a representation of that.

Thus has been consistently the best Chinese restaurant in Sydney for the 16 years I have been here. Leo, Simon and family never let you down

An amazing Chinese Restaurant with first class service and food that tastes amazing. I try not to rely upon Trip Advisor but on this occasion I did and this place certainly deserves its #1 Chinese in Sydney.

Superb service and the food was sublime and not over priced either! Recommend to anyone looking for a meal in Sydney!

Just love this restaurant and the owner is always a delight. They are famous for Tamarind Chicken and Robert Oatley Pinot. Never disappointed

Awesome experience all round - service, food, ambience. Best Spring rolls and Dim Sims we have ever eaten!
Steve Anderberg
Nice atmosphere and delicious food. We stuck with the basics - salt & pepper pork and beef with broccoli - but they were done to perfection.

Simon and his team never disappoint. Highly recommend!

Absolute amazing food and service to boot. What a fantastic night. Went with kids and they were made to feel amazing and special too. Thank you.

Best Chinese we've ever been to but costs similar to all the others! Great service but Mark the tall guy was outstanding kindly suggesting adjustments to our initial thoughts , all of which added to the experience. In simple terms if you want a Chinese (or probably Asian) just go here 😜
Karen Scriven
The service was fantastic and so was the food. Highly recommended.

I cant thank you enough for being part of my son's first birthday party. Very very helpful and accommodating staff. Prompt. The manager is involve in organising. Clean resto. The food is great. Guests liked the Tamarind chicken. The crew and manager were involved in the event and I really appreciate that. They anticipate our needs. Thank you and i hope to celebrate with you again in the future ❤️

Visited for lunch with a friend.Ordered the veg chowmein and veg spring rolls. The staff was a bit in a rush and just wanted us to place our orders, eat and get out even though they were not too busy. The place has a nice decor. The food was a bit salty.

Fortune Village is traditional Chinese restaurant. Very delicious food ! We ordered the Seafood Sang Choy Bow, Spring Rolls, Black Bean Chicken, Steamed Fish (my favourite) and Szechuan Prawns. The food was all fresh and delicious. Only I find the Szechuan Prawn a little bit spicy!
Service was friendly and all staff very helpful. Highly recommend.

Booked a table for 10 last night. Excellent food, sensational service and great value. Staff were very welcoming and attentive, nothing was a problem. Couldnt rate this restaurant high enough. Will definately be back again and again.

It’s second nature for Asian people to take over ordering the food in Asian restaurants. It’s both experience and control issues. In any case, I was rather pleased that my pals turned over the ordering to me at Fortune Village. I went with grandmother’s tofu, a combination omelette, and the clear favourite of the evening, deep-fried eggplant slices in a black bean sauce. We also ordered a salt and pepper pork chop dish and a spicy lamb, neither of which were standouts.

Fortune Village is old school Chinese with reasonable portions, modest prices and good old fashioned service to match.

We had pre-arranged a duck themed banquet with Fortune Village (as we were a big group) for $60 and we left feeling very satisfied. The highlight was the roast duck (pictured) which the kitchen roasts themselves and was served in a light soy sauce. The skin was crispy and delicious, the meat was roasted to perfection and was tender, sweet and not too gamey. I thought $60 was very good value for the amount of duck we had. Even the fried rice was made with duck meat.

If you have a big group or even a work/business lunch you can set a budget and Fortune Village will create a banquet menu for you, catering for specific requests and dietary requirements.

We had dinner last night at Fortune Village and all we can say it was great. The food was excellent, the service was great and the people were terrific. Wish we could come back regularity, but it is a long way from Las Vegas.

Over a busy Christmas & New Years, friends like to catch up and more times than not we find our way to Fortune Village for either a quite Saturday lunch, weekday lunch or for dinner at night. See for myself and friends, it's an easy choice. Food & Service is great and the staff over time get to know what you like and will help you choose. If you need gluten free or Vegetarian meals there is never a problem. If you have not been to Fortune Village in the past or it's been awhile, give it a go, you will enjoy yourself.

The waiter recommended the billy nee pork chop despite it not being one of the more expensive dishes and it was so beautiful. Real pork in a lovely batter and beautiful sauce (just be careful a few pieces have bones). We also got Mongolian lamb and standard fried rice.Unfortunately they sold out of the fried ice cream but the food and service were 10/10. Definitely recommend the pork!
KaptainKrunch
Tamarind Chicken a must have. Absolutely out of this world. The Standard fried rice was exceptionally well made. Glistening and not too oily, springy texture and flavoursome.

My family and I have been dining at the Fortune Village for over 20 years. We have always been very happy with the amazing meals which are consistently delicious. Simon, Mandy and all the staff are very welcoming. I highly recommend this Chinese Restaurant over any in Sydney.

Fortune Village is a longtime Chinese restaurant which offers a range of contemporary and classic, and provincial dishes. Like East Ocean and Marigold, the dishes were insipid and horrible imitations and could probably be summarised as a soulless dining experience.

I ordered a few signature dishes at the restaurant - roasted BBQ pork, crispy skin chicken and combination fried rice. The roasted delights were terrible - the BBQ pork was slimy and soggy and probably too much tenderiser was added. The crispy skin chicken was not crispy in any sense but another overcooked and soggy chicken. The fried rice was a nightmarish affair - rice clumps together, rock hard meat and bland overall.

Seriously, for a price of $70, this is probably one of the scams in town. You could get Michelin-rated roasted meat rice in Singapore for $4 or an exemplary meal in Hong Kong for less than $20.

Completely different experience to our last visit here. Tonight was a total let down, could have been at any Chinese restaurant in the burbs. No duck available, dishes were small and filled with onion. Wow what a disappointment. Staying at the Hilton, we were looking at going to some of the other rated restaurants in the Sydney CBD such as Hubert or Long Chim but thought I'd stick to our favourite. Not again you've lost our business.

I have been on a bit of a roll with Chinese restaurants this weekend. I always walk past fortune village and I would see the sign in front of it which states it's a top rated restaurant on Tripadvisor. So I went in with a friend and it was pretty good. We ordered tamarind chicken and Singapore noodles. I liked the former more than the latter. But overall it was a nice restaurant.

Great food, service, staff and atmosphere. Friendly conversation with waiters. Polite telephone manner when booking. Quick and efficient turnaround without being pushy.

Wonderful Chinese restaurant offering a traditional menu with authentic flavours. The customer service is highly attentive and very helpful. The restaurant has two levels and is a great space for large groups and functions. I highly recommend the eggplant in chilli garlic black bean sauce and the tamarind chicken. I must visit again ASAP.

Last week, we were invited to a Zomato foodie meet-up at Fortune Village, a lovely Chinese restaurant located on Clarence Street in the CBD. Before this, we hadn’t had Chinese food for a number of weeks, and so we were very excited to sample their banquet menu and see what was on offer! Fortune Village prides itself on doing simple dishes exceptionally well, and a lot of their menu involves slight twists on traditional Chinese meals. As a brief summary we had an amazing experience and found each of the dishes to be unique, full of flavour, and overall incredible. Our host, Simon, made the whole experience so informative and personalised, and showed us excellent hospitality as well!

I'm usually scared to visit Chinese restaurants in fear that i'll order something on the menu that I think is one thing and it turns out to be something with feet, or even worse, can walk off the table. However, thankfully I know something like this could never happen at Fortune Village. It is a place that has perfectly encapsulated the Chinese restaurant vibe, without the scary menu!

The food is delicious and the staff are exemplary. You genuinely feel as though you are their favourite customer from the minute you walk in. Fortune Village is definitely a restaurant you could either bring a date, or bring your family. It caters for everyone and the menu is a perfect balance between traditional Chinese and Chinese perfect for Westeners! I would 100% come back here again and I can't wait to have the fried ice cream once more!

Sincere thanks to our gracious and gregarious host Simon, "the boss", and Zomato for a wonderful meet up. It was a delightful meal, and most enjoyable to hear the stories behind each of the dishes.

With a menu that easily traverses new and traditional, there are favourites like Shanghai Soup Dumplings and Sweet and Sour Pork to signature dishes such as the Tamarind Chicken and Honey Pepper Beef. A highlight of the meal was the Eggplant In Chilli Garlic Blackbean Sauce (the eggplant was lightly battered and fried), which won over even the most aubergine-shy amongst the group. Another favourite of the table was the chicken. It was succulent and had a most delicious sauce reminiscent of the popular Shandong chicken. Every dish was flavoursome, with a symphony of flavours to satisfy all palates.

More refined than your local Chinese restaurant, the service is polite and restrained; there's no hurtling of dishes onto the table, and empty plates are promptly cleared. Thoughtful gestures such as the service of warm rolls of plush ribbed hand towels after your meal make this a first class dining experience. No cheap, nasty towelettes in plastic wrap to be seen! It is Chinese food elevated to greater heights in a non pretentious setting.

As a complete aside, I did take great delight in discovering that the indefatigable Lee Lee Chin had dined here as attested by her signature, framed on the wall, alongside those of other "personalities".

Very good 'western Chinese' food. We usually prefer traditional Chinese but decided to give this place a go based on reviews and the fact that it was in the CBD.

We were pleasantly surprised by the tasty, very well prepared food. Ingredients were good quality and everything tasted great.

The owner is a rare breed in that he seats guests and is a really nice guy. Something you do not see anymore.

Highly recommended for very good western Chinese food & outstanding service.

Had an early dinner here alone. Ambience and menu good, staff engaging, but food mediocre and service poor. 10 minutes wait for second glass of wine, 30 minutes wait for the bill. I waited another 15 for someone to take my credit card and then left cash on the table and walked out. Disappointing..

Saturday 6/2/16, I held a private party for 73 people at Fortune Village. The Service, Food and eye for detail was outstanding and everyone in attendance really enjoyed being at Fortune Village. Outstanding! Have been enjoying Fortune Village for 20 + years and will continue to so.
Stephen Brodie
Sydney

Had lunch at this place when I was in the city. The interior decor was very elaborate and brought out the traditional Chinese character of the restaurant. The food was delicious as well! Ordered an eggplant dish which tasted like a piece of heaven! I didn't expect much from the peking duck pancakes that I ordered. However, the filling inside the pancake was perfectly done. The meat was in the right quantity and it did not overpower the taste of the sauces and other spices that were used to prepare the filling. The manager was very friendly and the staff looked after us well. Would definately recommend this place to anyone who is looking for a bit of a different experience dining out in a Chinese restaurant.

So glad I read the reviews for this restaurant. The staff are so lovely, helpful and perfect in every-way. The food was perfect. The waiter we had was very helpful and very informative with the menu and such a lovely young man "Sunny" was his name. Just a short walk from the Hilton. A+

The moment I arrive in the restaurant I felt comfortable and right at home. The staff was so friendly and the food was delicious. Every dish had my taste buds wanting more. The price was reasonable too. I would highly recommend this place.Thank you Simon and to all your staff.

Some times I think Chinese is for take away and Sunday Yum Cha. Often, I'm wrong.
This place is awesome! Lunch or dinner you won't be disappointed with the amazing service and tasty food. Those pancakes are next level. Yum!

Came here for a friends birthday and had a wonderful experience. We had the banquet and every mouthful was delicious. All the staff were very attentive and the owner was hilarious as he entertained our table. Will definitely come again!

🇨🇳Chinese at its finest! This has ambience, great food and oozes traditional ambience. Service is faultless, the restaurant manager goes table to table shaking hands and introducing himself, impressive 👌 they have the food, venue and service 💯%! A great lunch spot especially for business.

Best Chinese in Sydney!! We love it here. Great service and delicious food every time. Highly recommend the shredded beef and tamarind chicken!

Absolutely Amazing. Fortune Village Chinese is my favourite Chinese Restaurant in Sydney. Always friendly, always has a great atmosphere and most importantly, it has the best Chinese food I have ever tasted and eaten! I honestly cannot speak more highly of the food and its quality. Thank you so much Simon and your team - I cannot recommend you enough.

A Great Find. I don't usually write reviews on restaurants but thought this was worth mentioning. I had wanted a quick and easy meal before heading home and discovered Fortune Village offers just what I wanted. My shredded duck with noodles dish was so tasty I could have eaten more if my stomach would have allowed it! Where I sat on the ground floor it has a casual atmosphere with communal tables and superb decorative decor. The casual menu looks like it covers all tastes and I am eager to go back and work my way down the menu.

Excellent all round experience. My family spends the odd weekend in Sydney from Canberra and we try a new restaurant each time. This time, despite mixed reviews on Urban Spoon, our trusty guide:-), we decided that it was close to our hotel and worth a try for the evening. The evening exceeded all expectations.
We were warmly greeted by Simon, the owner, and even asked about the unfavourable review on the site. He went on to explain, and we continued to talk about the menu and get his recommendations. There was six of us at the table, and we ordered 6 different main dishes to try a varied sampling of their cuisine.

The food was marvellous and Simon's warmth, hospitality and "spot on" recommendations made the evening unforgettable. My parents, who were visiting from overseas, and are well travelled, also agreed that they would return to the restaurant. Besides good food, Simon is a top notch host. The Mongolian Lamb was a winner for me but all the other dishes were equally good. Will definitely return.

Business Lunching. Good quality service with a smile as always. Chinese for business lunches cant go wrong here.

Really like their salt and pepper squid and crispy skin chicken. New venue rather than Bowlers Club location is a bit smaller but very well done.

Best Chinese in Sydney. My family have been enjoying chinese at Fortune Village in both locations for over 6 years and it still rates as the best in town for traditional chinese menu. Our favourite is the sweet and sour fish and the Shredded Peking Beef, the staff are always welcoming and friendly - we have tried others but keep coming back.

Fortune Village is our favourite Chinese restaurant. Fantastic food, friendly staff and a really nice place. Highly recommended!

It doesn't take a genius to figure out that the reviews for this restaurant have been written by the manager and / or the restaurants employee's. Headlines such as "Forget about Golden Century!" and strange statements like "Did not make me feel ill" should have immediately sent alarm bells ringing but I was hungry, it was getting late, and I decided to give the place the benefit of the doubt. I really wish I had gone with my instincts on this one as nothing depresses me as much as a bad meal, except a bad meal that cost me $90. The entree of lamb pancake was actually inedible and the main of shredded beef was tough and chewy. The eggplant dish which was so raved about in two of the reviews (written by the same user, who in the first admits he tried the eggplant in the black bean sauce, and in the second says he had the eggplant dish but "can't remember what it was called"... weird) was wholly unimpressive and bland. The poor people on he table next to us had ordered salt and pepper squid which arrived resembling deep fried fish fingers, which remained untouched on their table until the end of their meal. To add insult to injury a member of staff began jet washing the kitchen floor mere inches from my seat. Whilst proof they actually clean the kitchen was on one level reassuring, having a fine mist of dirty water settle on my table while I was eating was downright unacceptable. I found out this restaurant has only been open for 5 weeks which is concerning as this is when a restaurant should be in their prime. On a positive note the sang chow bow was OK and the staff were sweet, helpful and friendly but I'm afraid the food just doesn't cut the mustard. Especially at $90. It's a prime CBD location and the rent must be through the roof, but without repeat customers this place will never make a profit, and unfortunately the way things stand, I won't be going back.

Forget about Golden Century!!!. I have been looking for a Chinese restaurant in the CBD that is not full of bland food and bad service. Finally a REAL Chinese restaurant with the best service I have had in a restaurant in a long time. The food had actual flavour, the dishes were presented beautifully and after the meal I did not feel ill. What an AMAZING place with beautiful decor. I can not wait to go back and try more dishes. I highly recommend Fortune Village for any occasion!!

It's easy not to expect much at Fortune from the outside. Entrance is gained by running the gauntlet of geriatrics and soulless pokie jockies in the bowling club, but once you find the restaurant be prepared for a treat. We went with a big work group and so had the banquet. The food was all top drawer, plentiful and loads of choice. A selection of starters, then beef in black bean, tamarind chicken, salt & chili squid, BBQ pork, stir fry veggies and egg plant in black bean. Despite the size of our group everything came out at the same time, was hot, fresh and delicious. At $25 a head you really can't go wrong! Highly recommended.
