Review Almond Bar - Sydney

Daniel Schneider
Amazing. Took the time to enjoy their Valentine's day set menu and loved every bite. I left feeling satisfied. All the flavours were so amazing and everything was delicious. The staff were super accommodating of my girlfriend's dietary requirement and food was delivered to the table at exactly the right time. Good job Almond Bar, you guys are awesome.

Had set menu dinner at VIAND pop up reastaurant at Almond Bar 21/ Oct/ 2020. Thai fusion food designed / cooked by chef Annita Potter. The nine courses composed of the most exquisite flavours combined with matching wines. Michelin standard food. You must try it.

Too good! We had a such a lovely dinner last night! The restaurant is really buzzing and has a great energy. The food is sensational - we ordered too much but every dish was cleared! The service is so friendly, kind and engaging - definitely one of the better middle eastern restaurants in Sydney 💫

Lovely ambience with tasty food. My fav was haloumi with grapes, pistachio and hazelnut sauce.. simply delicious. I am a vegetarian but went with my friend who eats meat and she equally enjoyed everything.

Amazing ambiance, service and of course food! We were looking for something special for our last night in Sydney and this place went beyond our expectations! Can't say enough good things about the staff who were attentive and friendly. If you're thinking of going here, just go! The rosewater ice cream is absolutely delicious, best dessert I've ever had 🙂

Love this Syrian (middle eastern) restaurant in the heart of Darlinghurst. It has great decor/ambience, great food, friendly and warm service. My favourite dishes are the lamb sheesh, grilled halloumi, rice with lamb and Fattoush salad. The restaurant has some great wines too. A must try. Highly recommend it.

It's one of my favourite dinning spots but yet still quirky, restaurant in Sydney 🙏❤️

Delicious food and great atmosphere. Have been there for dinner and breakfast. Enjoyed both but like the dinner better. Loved trying the breakfast though, the food was different to anything I'd tried and the food was really yummy

Can’t recommend Almond Bar highly enough. Carol and the boys at front of house provided superb food and impeccable service. Must tries: pumpkin kibbeh and pulled lamb. Will definitely be returning next visit to Sydney!

My wife and I were here for breakfast this morning. We shared the breakfast platter which consisted of an array of middle eastern deliciousness! Nothing was left on either plate. Staff were friendly, coffee lovely, will definitely be back here again.

The Best Arabian Mezze Place I have been to in Sydney. The Sisters are Carol & Sharon Saloum and they welcomed us with their amazing service every time we visited. The food is so authentic and tastes like heaven. Like My mums cooking. (Shushh don't tell her) The service is fantastic, the ambience is warm and welcoming and the guests that come are a mix of arab people and westerners. We drive all the way from parramatta to eat here because of all the above points. I highly Recommend Almond Bar to everyone i know.

Have Not been here for awhile food and service are always excellent. You know your in a good place when the owners remember you from previous visits. Food is delicious and the vibe in the restaurant is always a good one

The quality of the food and wine is fantastic. ( this is from someone who has a mother who cooks spectacular lebanese food). Service is great too. Would highly recommend it.

We are very lucky in Sydney to have so many different cuisines. We are spoilt for choice, especially for good Middle Eastern food. We ate at Almond Bar on a Sunday when they do brunch (which they do once a month) and loved trying traditional Syrian breakfast foods eg labneh, hummus, olives, sausages. Very filling and we didn’t need to eat until dinner! #middleeast #syriancuisine #labneh

Food was amazing, service was brilliant. We waited quite a while on a Friday night with no reservations, but the manager gave us complimentary almond tasting plate and corn cobs! The food came relatively quick, and it tasted like nothing I’ve ever had before. Exceptional. Will definitely be going back.
Does My Bomb Look Big In This
While Almond Bar is far from a new restaurant, they’ve stayed in the forefront of my mind with their monthly Syrian breakfasts, and the big Syrian barbeques they hold in their back lane. The long, narrow restaurant is set just off the busy intersection of Liverpool Street and Darlinghurst Road. It’s decked out with dark woods, running from beams along the ceiling, to long thin tables to maximize seating. Whether you dine as a couple, or as a group of six, you’ll be sharing the same sized table, so be prepared for a bit of cheek-to-jowl eating. What Almond Bar lacks in floor space, they make up for with ingenuity. Ornate wood-paneled walls cleverly draw your eyes up, where you’ll find woven basket lights and a stack of golden tasseled fezzes to distract you from the intimacy you share with the table next door. Relaxed, friendly service gets us drinking reasonably quickly, and we begin to relax in the loud, tightly packed space. Bloody Miriam ($17) takes the Bloody Mary to the region in question with the addition of appropriate spices. Cinnamon Fire ($18) starts with...

Don't normally eat much middle eastern food, but my friend was feeling adventurous, so we came to Almond Bar based on some good reviews. The restaurant itself was not big, it was almost full for an early Sat night sitting. The complimentary plate of assorted almonds was a nice touch. Sweet, savoury, spiced, all of the varieties were tasty. The main meals were also delicious, we got the lamb shoulder, beef briskets, and fried cauliflowers. The meat were so soft & full of flavours, normally not a fan of brisket, but here you hardly know it's a brisket cut. Also particularly like the vegetable accompanying the lamb shoulder, who would've thought turnip & silverbeet can taste this good! The only minor weakness I thought was the bread that came with the baba ghanouj being a bit dried & floury. The service was pretty efficient. Overall a pretty satisfying dinner.

Fresh ingredients and delicious authentic food. Service so friendly and very accommodating. Our only negative is the very low stools as it's hard for my little old knees but that won't keep me away from coming back again and again to enjoy this little gem.

Ok, so this just happened. My friend and I went out for dinner here, and were really looking forward to the Syrian cuisine, the ambiance, seeing each other again and having a great night out. We were booked in for the 7 - 8.30 PM slot. So we arrived, sat down, ordered food, just chatted the night away and were friendly to the waiter. Nothing special there. The food was disappointing, I'm sad to say; extremely bland, no special Syrian flavours at all, clearly overpriced for both the quality and quantity. But alright, that happens sometimes, maybe we ordered just the wrong things. We weren't going to complain about it, were just enjoying our catch up, and were minding our own business. When the waiter asked us if we cared for a dessert we decided to give it a shot, seeing as the dessert menu looked promising. We just needed one more minute after being asked about our dessert choice and in fact asked the waiter to come over within 20 seconds after he had turned away, to take our order. We then waited about 20 minutes for the desserts and coffee/tea to arrive, but that was no problem for us as we were having a lovely evening between the two of us. Then the desserts were brought out by who I assume is the manager. He threw the bill at the table, stating that it was 8.45 PM and he needed the table 15 minutes ago. That abruptly bursted our pleasant bubble, after which I told him friendly and patiently that we had no idea what time it was and that we would of course happily had vacated the table at 8.30 if our waited would have told us that there was not enough time for desserts. In fact, we had waited for about 20 minutes for the desserts to arrive (and earlier for the food, when our waiter came back to tell us that he forgot what we had ordered). The man then went on and told us twice that when we got the dessert menu there was still enough time (meaning: "it took you too long to order something", while in fact it took us 1 minute and 20 seconds), and that we should be grateful to him because he had now swopped around the tables so we could stay 15 minutes longer. We then turned to our desserts, both being very surprised about what had just happened, which were, again, just as the rest of the food and the Middle Eastern coffee, tasteless. We left the desserts and coffee/tea for what they were, paid the bill, and left the restaurant silently. I'm very positive that we'll never go back to Almond Bar, and it makes me sad that someone working in hospitality can be so heartless and unnecessarily rude to his clients who have been nothing but well behaved and friendly all evening. Makes me wonder what stress the people working there are under, really.

Surprisingly good. A cosy, comfortable space with helpful staff and some really tasty, hearty meals. Had some clear coffee which was really delicious??

Terrible value for money. The portion size is a joke and the food is ridiculously overpriced. Not even that good either. Very disappointed and would actively discourage anyone from eating there.
Simply Starving
Ordered a delivery worth $70 and the food was horrible! The servings are ridiculously small and the dishes have no flavour (and not to mention are completely unauthentic). Complete rip off and will never visit here again!

Great restaurant with beautiful Middle Eastern food!! The service was really fantastic, and very accommodating when I asked about Vegan options.
I ordered a Cosmopolitan to start with, it was done very well! The bottle french rose we ordered was also really nice, not too sweet at all.
Then we ordered Tabouli and Arr'nabit (traditional fried cauliflower with tahini), the tabouli was so refreshing and the flavours were so beautiful and the fried cauliflower was amazing, such great flavours! We also had coriander potatoes, and pumpkin kibbeh, although I couldn't quite taste the coriander in the potatoes the kibbeh was really great.
My friends also had Chef's Syrian Duck and Tuna & Mutabal. Apparently the duck was well cooked and the puffed cous cous was really nice and the Tuna was, I quote "simply super"
I highly recommend Almond bar if you have vegan/vegetarian friends and you want a to have a great evening without too much of a hassle and amazing food. I will be back!!

Stumbled across this little gem for a casual weeknight dinner. Both my Gluten Free friend and I came away very impressed.

The service was thoughtful and attentive from the moment we stepped through the door. We shared a delicious chicken and rice dish, which was topped with yogurt and almond.

They even have free almonds on the table. We couldn't have asked for more.

They lost half a star, because of how awkwardly narrow the tables are. But now I'm just being fussy.

We love Almond Bar.

Consistently excellent service, amazing food and great atmosphere. This place never disappoints. A rare gem.

We recommend it to anyone who will listen.

Enough said.

This is without a doubt one of the best restaurants I have been to in years! The food here is like nothing I've ever tasted - the combination of flavours and textures are refined yet bold and unpretentious - we enjoyed the chef's banquet - the servings are generous and everything is so fresh and aromatic! The service was impeccable - relaxed, friendly yet professional - one of our three guests was gluten and lactose intolerant and the staff went above and beyond to adapt special plates for her 'off the cuff'! Can't wait to go back - highly recommended!

I don't know much about Middle Eastern food so didn't know what to expect. The restaurant was long and narrow, seats and tables were lined up against the walls on both sides. Turned out it was kind of tapas restaurant so we went along with recommendation and ordered two small and two large dishes between two of us. The small dishes were halloumi and calamari, both grilled, both fairly standard and nothing special. The two large dishes were duck salad and lamb skewers. I never saw such huge cous cous grains, very much different from the supermarket cous cous and better. Pomegranates were unusual ingredient with cous cous but this dish was refreshing. The lamb skewers were standard on the other hand. We got some complimentary almonds in a wooden tray, they were nice. Restaurant was beautifully decorated, staff were friendly, and food was ok. Nothing came across really impressive or memorable though.

Delicious middle eastern food. Enjoyed all our dishes - baba ganoush dip, haloumi, coriander potatoes and kafta. For dessert the baklawa was good but not great. Good service and reasonably priced. Great ambiance.
TheBearReview
This is a really fun place for a group who wants to share and try Middle Eastern food. I only came with a girlfriend and we wish we had more people with us so we can try a few more things. The dips were a bit pricy, at $8 it is not a very big serving. I would have rather a selection of dips so you can try a few. The calamari was super tender, the flavours weren't particularly Middle eastern but it was delicious. The soft shell crab had the most amazing flavouring but they were a bit small and the gills weren't cleaned out, which was rather surprising, in a bad way. The confit duck with couscous was gorgeous. Highly recommended. Lots of wine available by the glass. Overall a good night.

A modern take on Middle Eastern cuisine. Fantastic lamb off the bone and a great take on kibbeh with pumpkin. Lively popular atmosphere with heart despite its size.

Tucked away in the central streets of Darlinghurst, with full view of St Vincent’s hospital, is a quaint tiny place that is BOOMING with Mediterranean flavour inspired by beautiful Syria. You enter, it is comfy, you sit down, you get nice service, you taste the food and BAM! You never want to leave again.

It’s close to home, it doesn’t break the bank, the service is great and the food even better – Almond Bar is a restaurant that ticks all the boxes.

Last one on the line was Mukloubi with Chicken. It was written in the menu as the ‘Chef’s favourite dish growing up’. We had a very high expectation on this signature dish. When the dish arrived, we were taken aback by its shocking presentation. It looked like fried rice, covered in gooey yoghurt and a sprinkle of almonds. The taste was even more challenging, considering that we have never had fried rice combined with yoghurt. I personally think that those two don’t go well together.

I feel very lucky to have hummus as a staple of my diet thanks to my Lebanese Mum but poor dad who barely can make toast has his Syrian heritage ignored most of the time. All my life we happily labelled all the food we ate as Lebanese. So when I stumbled upon Food Safari's edition of Syrian food I had to ask - what does Syria have to offer? My dad and his brother always claims anything Lebanese as Syrian, mind you this argument has stood the test of time with the Greeks, Egyptians and other Middle Eastern countries battling out as inventors of tabouli, baklava (betlawa as the Lebanese would say), kibbeh, hummus, kafta…you get my drift. This is a result of the constant war in the Middle East with invasions and fighting leading to the infiltration of cuisine and also the stealing of recipes - so this makes it quite a complicated tale. Now besides Food Safari introducing me to frekkeh, sumac and other Syrian delights, it also introduced me to a restaurant run in Darlinghurst by two Syri

Fun night. Good food. Just way too much of it. There is absolutely no need to add extras to the banquet. Carol, the co-owner, stopped us ordering even more than we did.

I've never tried Syrian cuisine so was very excited to sample the food at Almond Bar. Let me tell you it didn't disappoint. Our server was very patient with explaining the dishes. All 3 of us enjoyed the food and the experience and can't wait to go back. Assorted almonds were lovely and it was a good sign of great food to come We ordered some bread with hummus and za'atar dips. It was addictive and I went on a hummus binge eating week after this! Grilled calamari with oregano and lemon. This was very simple but super delicious. The calamari was very tender. My favourite dish of the night. Of course we had to have the grilled haloumi. YUM!!! The table next to us were obviously enjoying this dish so we had to get us some fried cauliflower. Amazing! I've had enough dry falafel to put me off ordering this. But again the table next to us were going crazy for this dish so had to have it. It was a good decision, this was really moist and delicious. The menu said this was the chef's childhoo

The food highlight of the trip was our dinner at the Syrian restaurant, Almond Bar ,in Darlinghurst. WOW! what amazing flavours!

I really enjoyed the delicious array of flavours in the dishes I sampled, especially those almond varieties which I got a jar of. Excellent friendly service too.

What a find! Lovely take on a whole range of Middle Eastern delicacies.

Meh. Got the duck salad special, didn't know what to expect. Came out like a warm clumpy cous cous dish with scant slivers of duck. Uninspiring.

Syrianly good. Had a fabulous meal on Tuesday night @ Almond Bar. Service was excellent, staff were helpful and attentive. The food was delicious and served in good time, the portion were perfect. We will definitely be return, can't wait to have the za'tar

Stick with ala-carte menu. Our table ordered the Chef's Feast. The starters were excellent - the dips especially the muhammara and hummous were flavour-packed, the calamari was very tender and the falafels were tasty deep-fried morsels. Following these, we were served the crab freekeh, lentil and haloumi salad, chef's syrian duck and chicken mukloubi in quick succession. Although the dishes were perfectly fine individually, they were far too heavy and tasted very similar (grain, lentils and yogurt featured heavily) when served in progression. The last dish of lamb skewers was a welcome hit of protein. The Syrian duck was particularly disappointing - instead of the beautiful tender duck meat we envisioned, it was mostly cous cous pearls with some shredded duck.
Additionally, one of our party couldn't eat the freekeh salad due to an intolerance. She was served lamb skewers instead which was a letdown as the Chef's Feast already included this dish so she had this twice. Not impressed with this lazy substitute.
Almond Bar definitely serves up good middle-eastern food but we didn't think the set menu was the best showcase for it. I'd stick with the ala carte items so there's a bit more variety in flavours and textures.

Fantastic restaurant. I chose to visit Almond Bar with a few girlfriends after reading positive reviews online. It did not disappoint. The food was AMAZING. Every dish blew me away. The starter dips come with bread as well as carrot sticks - good for those watching their weight. The mukloubi chicken was a standout. We are so excited to go again and try more dishes. Plus they have a great wine list. Its the perfect location for friday night dinner and drinks.

Great place. Come here often - love everything about it. Great food, great service. The duck cous cous meal is amazing!

Really reasonably priced and good good food though I get the sense that the spices / herbs are toned down for Australian taste buds... My first time . Will go again but on a fridsy night it was crowded ( seating a little tight ) and hot .
Yum
.

HARD TO FIND SUCH PASSION. If you want to feel love in a Sydney restaurant, go to almond bar, just divine. Always made to feel welcome and the food is delicious. Congratulations on the chef's new book too!

Go!. Everything was super tasty, especially the Syrian Duck dish...and staff were great! highly recommend

Hi everyone, I've been a customer of Almond bar for years but have never gotten around to writing a review, or looking at the reviews... I have never managed to eat all the food ordered at Almond Bar, feast or other, nor have any of my guests in over 6 years... Further, people have to remember that this isn't a cheap kebab shop in parramatta (which I love), which operates with little over heads... As a fellow business owner in the area, rents here are around $3k a week. Just rent. If ppl knew the costs of running a restaurant in this area, they would know that $52 per head is actually cheap. Believe it or not. Sorry, just really sick of ppl not being conscious of their comments & of people who know the least being the harshest critics.
Claire
This is the first Middle Eastern restaurant where we have ordered the $52/head banquet and walked out hungry! What little amount of food that IS served however is very tasty. The wait staff, especially the man, were not all together welcoming or friendly. I wouldn't waste my $ here again.
Bboo
The brisket was absolutely delightful! A rich, moorish date molasses has soaked through this meltingly tender meat.
Paz
Can't fault this place. The service was fantastic and sets a standard that all Sydney eateries should take note of. The food is absolutely delicious and servings generous and well balanced. We'll definitely be putting this amongst the top places to eat in the inner city at the moment.
Jo
I went here on Saturday night for our staff Xmas dinner. I had read reviews beforehand and all were very positive. I was amazed at how tasty the food was. We had dips, calamari (best ever!), haloumi, chicken skewers and kofte. The only downfall was the rosewater ice-cream but it won't stop me from going there again. Great atmosphere, friendly staff and reasonable prices.
Steffarama
Delicious!. Great little find in Darlinghurst. It's small and tiny but the atmosphere is great, even for a Tuesday night. Great service and nice little touches with the almond nibblies when we sat down. The duck was divine and so tasty as was the haloumi and lentil salad. Also would recommend to make sure you leave room for dessert - the Rose of Damascus was heavenly.

Awesome space and food but didn't get service for a while.

8/10

First Class Middle Eastern. Have been going here for a while as a local favourite, every time we are impressed by the quality and creative flair this restaurant consistently demonstrates. Everything we order is delicious, that's all there is to say really, delicious.

recently we were treated to their monthly sunday breakfast and it was simply amazing, we've never been fortunate enough to have food like this for breakfast it was a true experience and one I'd highly recommend.
Margeaux And Matthew
Food was amazing, dishes were decently sized and great for sharing. They had some awesome traditional drinks like a tamarind soft drink and a middle eastern ouzo. Atmosphere was creatively themed accordingly. Vegan/vegetarian and gluten free friendly, which is always a relief coming from someone who always has to chop and change a dish a lot. However the early seating from 6:30pm is only till 8.15pm which for us resulted in us missing out on an opportunity to try something from the extensive dessert menu and settling the bill in quite a rush. However all in all a wonderful place which is great for families and couples alike. Highly recommended!

Finally made it to Almond Bar over the weekend. We could not fault the food. I am vegetarian and there was plenty for me to eat. Food was complimented by great wine, service and entertainment. Do yourself a favour.
Smallchop
Excellent service, excellent food, excellent restaurant!!!!!. I was a bit wary about trying the Almond Bar after reading some of the negative reviews, but I'm SO glad I did.

Two of us turned up unannounced at 8.30 on Friday evening to find the place packed to bursting point, but the waiter says not to worry, he'll do his best to sort something out for us. There was none of the sniffiness you can get in some places when you turn up on a weekend without a booking, which was really refreshing. He wanders off to check and then sends us down the road for a drink, taking our number and saying he'll call us ASAP when he has a table. Fifteen minutes later he calls to tell us to finish our drinks and wander back, our table will be waiting for us. So we do and it is.

And yes, as some people have said, it is a very narrow, long table and the chairs are basically leather cubes so they don't have backs - but they are perfectly comfortable, and are extremely stylish. In fact the whole place is extremely stylish. The walls are covered in carved dark-wood screens and gorgeous lights dangle from the ceiling, giving the small room a warm, intimate feel.

The staff are every bit as good as the reviews say they are. They're super-friendly and very attentive without being intrusive. Service is excellent, water is topped up constantly and there is no attempt to rush people out - even towards the end of a busy night when only a couple of tables are occupied the waitress is happily suggesting dessert options to customers rather than tidying up around them to give them a hint to go home.

The food is every bit as good as the service, it's very authentic and very well presented. The complementary tray of mixed flavoured almonds, which we scoffed as we pondered over the menu with a glass of good wine, was a perfect start to the meal. We ordered 3 dips - beetroot, aubergine and labne with zatar - all of which were scrumptious. Yes, they came in quite small bowls, but I don't think the amount of food itself was particularly lacking - the same amount served on a plate would have looked bigger but nowhere near as classy. We also ordered pumpkin kibbe, calamari, moukloubi with chicken and a fattoush salad, all of which were excellent. The kibbe was crispy on the outside and meltingly moist on the inside - full of flavour and very moreish. The calamari completely lived up to it's reputation, it was the most tender I've ever eaten, and perfectly spiced. As for the moukloubi, I can see why it was the chef's favourite dish growing up, I suspect if I'd grown up in Syria it would have been mine too! A mixture of cinnamon-flavoured rice, thin slices of silky aubergine and moist chicken, topped with yoghurt and crunchy toasted pine nuts, it was to die for. The only dish I wasn't bowled over by was the fattoush salad, which I found too lemony for my taste, but it was very authentic and the better half absolutely loved it.

All of this left us too full for dessert, which was a shame because I'd been really looking forward to it. With 2 glasses of wine each our evening at Almond Bar cost us $114, which isn't half bad considering the quality of the food and the level of service. Not to mention the fact that we were so full we could hardly stagger out of the door..........

So please ignore the odd bad review and give this place a try - I didn't find the tables too small, the food overly salty, the rice in the moukloubi dry or the portions tiny at all. I just found a very cosy, stylish restaurant serving good-quality, authentic Syrian food, with outstanding service. I'd be happy to pay $114 for that any time.
Alison
Incredible food! The calamari was some of the best I've ever had. Great cocktails too.

Delicious!. Went here a few weeks with some girlfriends on a Saturday night.

Firstly, the staff were attentive from the minute we walked in to the minute we left, not pushy or intrusive, but suggestive to some menu recommendations and drinks.

After ordering the sharing plate plus some additional meze, for the four of us we were greeted with an array of mixed almonds to nibble on.

The food was quick and delicious to say the least! The three tiered 'mixed platter for 2' was so generous and beautifully adorned with seafood - calamari, prawns (all cooked to perfection), as well as chicken and lamb skewers, along with falafels, and yummy fatoush salad. Everything was of the perfect temperature and had been cooked just right. The scallop and eggplant stack were also so delicious and a must as an additional mezza !

After deciding on some desserts to finish our wonderful night, we decided on the almond pancakes and the chocolate kataifi, which were perfect, well balanced and not too sweet after our heavy meal.

I will definitely be coming back here soon, they were so booked out that staff had to turn away walk-ins at 7.30pm! I would have to say one of the best middle eastern restaurants in Sydney by far!
Viktor
A must try. If you go then make sure you order the "secret recipe" calamari. Just don't ask how they make so tender.
Ehmbee
Recommend!. I loved everything on the menu but the falafel was my favourite. The calamari is probably the most tender that I've ever tried
Sharyn Honey
Friendly and tasty. Was the food friendly and the owners tasty - or visa-vera? I think both are true. We left the ordering to the waitress and she selected a great mix of their most popular dishes. The flavours were fantastic - complex but well put together. I will be back soon.

Been there half a dozen times and never had a dish that wasn't beautiful. Lovely room with some of the best staff I have met. Attentive without being intrusive, happy and friendly.

Fantastic!. Beautiful setting, friendly staff and a truly inspired menu make Almond Bar the perfect way to spend the evening.

Absolutely magnificently exquisite. What more can I say?

Yummy!. Almond Bar has a very nice atmosphere and great authentic food with loads of flavour. Prices are reasonable too!
