Review Spice Alley - Sydney

Erin Rowe
Great fun, this hidden street is all about the atmosphere and the feeling of Asian Street food. It's great fun for something different. The food is a teeny bit expensive and the food was ok, it was certainly decent with drinks being super expensive but not complaining, I would definitely visit again, keen to try out all of the different cuisines. Definitely worth a visit

Our son took us to Spice Alley today. We went at 12 on a Wednesday in July, and it was quiet so easy to walk round and look at all the varied and mouth watering choices. We went to Alex Lee and had the crispy chicken with noodles and a spicy coconut sauce that was amazing. It tasted like a family dish my grandmother used to make from Burma. I would highly recommend a trip to this gem of a place in Sydney

Located behind of Central Park mall with outdoor sitting. Access through small lane. Light decorated around the area and busy in dinner time. All the food stalls are Asian cuisine. I'd tried some of the food from each stall randomly, the food mostly tasted average, could say low quality fast food. Price is consider pricey, small amount in takeaway plate for dine in/TA as well. I would prefer having meal in other cafe/restaurant next time.

How good is this place?! Asian street food vibes all the way. We had fun exploring the different vendors. Seating can be a problem and at peak times you wait. But well worth it

Spice Alley is a great hide away in the back streets of Chippendale. Cleverly created eatery contains a whole street of restaurant/street food vendors from a variety of different cuisines including Japanese, Singaporean, Chinese, Indian and Malaysian (& others). You can grab your food from any vendor and find a table somewhere along the street meaning if you go with others, you can all choose to eat from the different cuisines available but all sit together to enjoy!

I accidentally stumbled upon this place, and now I come back everyday. In truth I was looking for a place that was open for an early lunch (before 11am) and google kept trying to send me here. In retrospect there are big signs in front of the alleyways that lead to Spice Alley. In my defense, some of the alley ways are less than half a metre wide. Spice Alley consists of multiple spice / Asian / fusion restaurants. There are not many asian influenced cuisines one cannot find here. All restaurants are competitively priced and really could not exist in here for long if they were not at the top of their game in sourcing produce, cheffing and delivery. I absolutely loved the melting pot of restaurants and people here. The atmosphere was fantastic lunch through dinner. This is a must visit Sydney experience!

Out and about with a break in the weather, been a while since my partner and I had Asian food so headed out to Spice Alley in Sydney. Lot of vendors to choose from, food options clearly displayed and priced. Value for money and delicious. Drink bar available as well. This is a top spot for a mix of different foods.

Spice Alley is more about the quirky outdoor experience rather than the food. I’s been designed to be a surprise; tucked away and hidden from the public view; clever and enticing. Satisfies those of us who miss the raw Asian street food culture.

Great atmosphere, great food, great place! Once you understand how it all works (no cash, different stalls etc) its a fantastic place for trying an array of really good food. We loved it so much, we returned the following day for a late and much quieter lunch. It gets busy but thats part of its charm, a must do!

Wonderful Asian food court, great atmosphere and tasty (and of course spicy) Asian food. Cheaper than I expected (around 13 $ for a main course). Would love to have a place like this in Milan too As to drinks, it is a BYO, therefore you have to bring your own alchoolic drink, if you wish. Overall, great informal place.

Tucked away in the Sydney CBD's cleavage, the place sports more than 10 different styles of Asian cuisines from various joints. And stone's throw from central station...this place is my new oriental culinary fantasy :-]

Combination of street food type of counters for Thai, Japanese, Vietnamese, Korean, Chinese, Malaysian cuisines, Cocktail bars and sit in restaurants. KOI dessert bar is added attraction. Beer and wine is available. Lively ambience. Foodies would love it.

Bad food, poor service and impossible to get tables, Spice Alley has gone downhill since it first opened. If you lack imagination then Spice Alley is for you.
Fiona Willis
Great atmosphere but impossible to buy a beer. And very hard to find a table. Food..so so, but would I go again? Probably. And byo beers.

Far exceeded my expectations .... well worth it and can’t wait to return to try another one of the numerous temptations on offer!

One of the nicest places in Sydney. Best food was at Alex Lee Kitchen! Loved the atmosphere - very Melbourney.

We love Spice Alley!!! Great atmosphere & fantastic food

I was very keen trying ramen at this place, I was disappointed. The ramen noodle is overcooked, the gyoza taste frozen and the soup isn't the greatest. It feels like there was no effort to put in the dish. In my personal opinion it's mediocre at best.

I was hungry, starving and can’t wait to eat! Working all day and it had made me this hungry! But I didn’t know what to get. Especially being in the middle of city with plenty of restaurants around. It was difficult to decide what to eat for dinner. I knew I wanted something warm; since it has been raining the past day!

Then I remembered that I walked past this restaurant before; but haven’t tried any of their dishes. So finally I decided to order a warm bowl of ramen!! And you have no idea —- the most satisfying bowl of ramen I ever had in months! Definitely rated it a 10/10! And in case you’re wondering, it was the Vege Ramen!!! The soup was so delicious that I sip on the soup until the bowl was empty.
The soup didn’t need any extra seasoning, salt, soy sauce or chilli, it was just perfect on its own!!!!!!

I had tonkotsu ramen ($13.8) to get my ramen fix, the broth was thick but the chasiu not many as I expected. It’s only 3 small slices. Free flow chilli powder.

Had the pleasure of trying out the Spicy Fried Chicken Ramen and it was quite surprising just how good it was. The broth was amazingly hearty and wholesome, the fried chicken was not only crispy but tasted amazing. Overall a great dish and would love to try a few of the other dishes.

I tried this on a whim without reading any reviews. I got the regular tonkotsu and I was blown away by the quality! Loved it. Then I read all of these reviews saying how awful this place was and I was quite surprised. I read somewhere there was a recent management change. That may be why I had a good experience when I went 2 months ago for the first time, compared to older reviewers.

Kyo-to seems to have changed a bit - they've got some exciting new stuff including a bar! I've tried the fried rice, clam udon and a few skewers- really delicious.. The environment is also really cool with old school posters all over the walls - a nice new addition to Spice Alley.

Got the $10 Wednesday YellowTail Udon special. For its size $10 is very cheap and the entire meal was very very filling. The taste however, personally, the fish and udon taste didn’t go well together. Besides that it’s definitely a good, cheap meal that’s rare to come by, especially in the city.
Always Hungry
I’m not sure if it was just our order but my friend and I ordered the same tonkotsu ramen and it was TASTELESS. For the most part, it looked really appetising, it had a variation of toppings. But the most flavourful ingredient was probably the eggs and it didn’t last as long, It was as if I was just sipping on warm water, I was so surprised bc these ingredients usually have a lot of flavour to them but the pork tasted like nothing, the seaweed even tasted like nothing. I tried to look for salt but they only had chilli powder and sesame seeds on the counter, so I hoped for the best when dumping chilli powder into my ramen. Normally, I would’ve asked to change my ramen but felt like it was probably best if I just kept eating to not offend the chef. My friend also found it to be tasteless, which means ts probably their batch for the day or they just normally make it like that. But I’m pretty sure the other items on the menu were good as it did seem pretty busy, but I don’t think I’ll be returning.

Really nice ramen but slightly expensive compared to prices in Japan. Serving is pretty big and cash is not accepted so be prepared to use your cards. The ambience is fun and exciting because it's like you're in another country - crowds and all. It's like a festival there everyday and there's always good food to choose from.
Loveeatingfood
The ramen here is expensive and they serve with small portions. I felt hungry after finishing my bowl of miso ramen. Wouldn’t recommend if you’re hungry and on a budget. The noodle texture reminded me of two minute noodles and not the ‘ramen’ noodles. However, the dish was flavourful.
The Miniature Life
We were really happy with the vegetarian udon bowl that we ordered, with a hearty soup, tasty udon noodles and crispy and tasty tempura. Service was a bit slow here, and it took some time to get our food, but nonetheless we really enjoyed it. Definitely bang for your buck considering the large serving size! Im keen on having a go at the Ramen next time!

The Japanese offer at Spice Alley. Pretty standard mix of udon, ramen & don offers. The Spicy Miso ramen was average. The broth was oily, you can see the layer of oil on top. It had only 1 really small strip of pork, which was dry and stringy. Overall a bit salty as well. Better off going to Ippudo near by if you want a ramen.
Howard Phung
Okonami is the best in Sydney, love it to bits. Sauce is right, mix ingredients are right. Reminds me of my adventures in Japan. HIROSHIMA specifically.

Yaki Dori also very good. Chicken skin so crispy. :)

Disappointment for me was Miso Ramen, way to salty... Ramen was good though.

Located in Spice Alley, this place offers pretty tasty food for a cheap price. Their miso ramen is pretty strong and salty but thats how i like my ramen so if you do too then you'll definitely enjoy it. Their takoyaki is pretty nice too

It was my first time dining in spice alley. Found seats in front of this restaurant and decided to order here. Got a Japanese beer which went down well with the ramen and the okonomiyaki. I thought the portion was reasonable and came out efficiently.
FoodLuva
I love Spice Alley, and love that I've got so much more to try here.. at this place the broth in the ramen is beautifully smooth and bursting with umami. However not enough pork slices! :-( the standard in sydney seems to be at least two slices, I think I barely got half of one. So it was a bitter sweet experience.
Service is efficient and quick. The atmosphere is spice alley hustle and bustle - keep your eyes peeled for a seat!
Filofoodie
Actually the best ramen I've ever eaten although I've only been there once but it'll probably become my everyday lunch spot once I start university
Very convenient location and instagram worthy alley
I bought something which was supposed to be spicy I can't remember what it's called...but it wasn't really spicy even though I added a lot of their spice into it
Also the first time I ever finished all the soup for a ramen

Kyo-to is a little ramen and rice don kiosk within Spice Alley which serves some delicious rice don but disappointment ramen.

Kyo-to is the closest restaurant/food kiosk to get my weekly (maybe daily) fix of Japanese food (not because it serves extremely great food). On the one hand, the ramen is outrageously salty and they were often served soggy and overcooked. On the other hand, the unagi don was above average. The vinegar rice was well prepared and appetizing and the teriyaki sauce enhances the flavour of the unagi without being too overwhelming.

I had the Beef Udon from Kyo-to with Uber Eats. Reasonably priced for the serving size. I found it tasty and the beef cooked nicely. Would I go running back there? Probably not, but was it still pleasant enough to eat? Yes.
Stella
Reasonable priced ramen and food in general. They have their own little place to sit for their own customers. The ramen I had was meant to be spicy but it wasn't much spicy it was more mild.
Welovefood
Good food, we had the ramen and the chicken teriyaki don. The teriyaki was very tasty but the ramen lacked flavour. Long wait, but it was Saturday 7pm so we understand :-)

Quick and easy food in Spice Alley, Chippendale! Serving Ramen, ebi fry, udon and salmon don to name a few! Japanese take away food, bought to eat in the streets or take home. We went for our fave Japanese food: okonomiyaki! A huge serving, topped with an egg, shallots and fish flakes. Quite nice and probably closest to the style we had in Japan that we've had in Aus. We also tried a yuzu miso Ramen - nice savoury taste combing well with the citrus of the yuzu. Came out fast and pretty cheap.
FoodieYim
Got a Shio Ramen for $11 tonight. Price-wise it's quite cheap. Presentation is okay. You get the regular portion of pork and garnish with the bowl of noodles. The soup is a bit too salty. The texture of noodle is very much like the dry ramen packs you buy from supermarkets to cook home.
Goopee Howard
The original plan was to go to Ippudo in Central Park but the line was too long ($10 ramen special). I had heard that Spice Alley had a ramen place so we decided to try it out. We got the spicy tonkotsu ramen and the gyoza. It was above average in quality. A smaller portion than I normally get at other places. Spicy ramen for $12 is good value.

Bland food. Poor service. They mixed up my order and when I told them they said "oh my god really" with a bad attitude. The card reader also didn't work for a long time. Very expensive for what you get.
Carol Zhang
Wasnt the best ramen Ive had but it was still good. Only bad thing about this place or Spice Alley in general, is that they dont accept cash...
Sydneyguyrojoe
I come to spice alley to try Japanese? Sounds strange when I think about it and when Food_Rampage_AM @INSTA says it I think "oh no" and that was my experience

I choose this place because I didn't want to wait! I got the takoyaki which was standard stuff but the bento box was a disappointment

No sushi in my bento box, fatty pork which was thinly sliced and the rice looked liked it covered a lot of space! Not good value at all

Food took a while to come out also
I also found spice alley strange where they don't accept cash (you can buy a card to use though and load it with with cash)

I feel a little generous for giving this score

The last shop on the way out of Spice Alley, KYO-TO is a great spot for some reasonably priced Japanese food. Spicy tonkotsu had a pleasant kick and was a good and filling meal for lunch.
Eatwithmyfoodsafari
The spicy tonkotsu ramen had a full-bodied broth and a nice kick, the noodles were lovely and chewy, and for $12 you can't go wrong. Prices must have gone up in the new financial year because ramen prices now start from $11.

Tell you what. If you haven't made a trip to check out Spice Alley Kensington street yet I personally offer to accompany you. I mean as long as you aren't a serial killer or 1D fan. Spice Alley has an array of Asian pop up restaurants. Seating is inside the beautiful old houses (heritage) so if you ever wanted the feeing of sitting in a strangers house in a time warp you need to hit this place up. Kyoto is the first up and has ramens galore. The one pictured is spicy tonkotus ramen $10. Side note spice alley doesn't take cash so pay pass or you can buy tokens at one of the ends (adventure is the spice of life so I shan't give you too much direction .. mainly because I am lost myself). Japanese is one of my fav Asian cuisine because I feel like it's healthier (sorry Malaysian I can't get any more junk in the trunk but keep up with the rotis) and also I am a terrible Indian as in I handle spice as well as Eskimo handles Australian summer; it's painful to watch. Best ramen at cheap prices in a funky location. Due to its food court settings you can take your choosiest friend or partner when they can't decide what they wanna eat and you legit starving. Also make sure you try the ice cold milo and Thai milk tea.
Sarahversuscarbs
I tried the miso tonkotsu and spicy tonkotsu - only $10 each! Very competitive pricing compared to some other ramen joints in Sydney. In terms of flavor the miso tonkotsu was my preference. For 10 bucks I'd definitely return!
Chow Yum Fat
These days, good ramen is getting quite expensive in Sydney. When a little place like Ky-oto opens up offering bowls for between 10.00 to 12.00 I can only fist pump. It's not the best ramen or karaage I've ever had but I can't go past the price. Tasty, simple, humble, back-to-basics Japanese food that won't break the bank. Nice.
Jason
The meat Dons are simple and healthier than most other dining options.

But they are quite bland in taste.

Overall this is what one would expect from your typical Japanese eatery.
Greedygreedyguts
I've been here a few times now and it's an easy, cheap Japanese option with meals around $10. The menu is very simple, mainly ramen and don but there's no sushi, probably a contractual arrangement given that Sushizilla is in the main Central Park complex. The fried salmon don is very good. The service can be patchy and they need to offer more seasonings like soy sauce!
Princess_Porky
The takoyaki and uni don were quite nice. The tonkotsu ramen we had was not fabulous. The broth was ok but was not a fan of the noodles at all. The spicy tonkotsu was the nicer of the two tonkotsu broths.

Ky-oto is the latest addition to Spice Alley, a cheap-eats collection of eateries peddling Asian street food at very affordable prices. The specialty of the house is ramen, and they have a good selection for you to choose from. They also have a number of udon dishes (both hot and cold) on offer for the noodle lovers out there. And if noodles are not your thing, then gyoza, karaage, okonomiyaki or donburi are just a few of their other dishes available.
