Review Black Star Pastry - Sydney

The Insta famous Watermelon cake certainly lives up to the hype... Light, fragrant and delicious. I also purchased the Chocolate Mirage but it wasn't to my liking, however my kids demolished it 😊 I got here late in the day and was lucky to get my hands on the last Watermelon Cake... I highly recommend ordering ahead to avoid disappointment. Parking is a challenge so be prepared to walk a distance, if your not in a rush make the most of it and enjoy a coffee ☕ Overall a bit pricey, but the Watermelon Cake is worth the experience so give it a go!

Black Star Pastry is famous for the strawberry watermelon cake. Over the years, other cakes are developed and they taste very nice too. Nevertheless, a tiny slice of cake can cost somewhere from $9. Still worth a try.

Being a Brisbane boy, I had heard of Blackstar's watermelon cake from my friends, and decided it was a novelty worth trying on my recent visit to Sydney. It turned out to be much better than just a novelty experience, overall being quite refreshing and light. I also tried the Japanese Forest cake, again, something I have never heard of or tried anything like before. I can't say it would be to everyone's taste, but I did enjoy it. Price wise you can expect to pay $10+ for a slice of cake. They also offer other savoury and dessert pastries that begin at cheaper price points. There coffee was above average, not something I'd visit the store as the sole attraction, but definitely better than many a cup I've had before. The Cafe offers limited seating inside, so be prepared to takeaway if busy.

Trust the taste was so good and yummy, I can't resist myself to stop taking each bite of this yummy delicious cake. I bought this cake special for my sister birthday, We have tried the strawberry watermelon before, but this time we decided to go with the different option and yes it was worth to try a new edition!! Omg can't wait to buy one more cake for my birthday as well... Thank you black star for your beautiful yummy cake.

I had their watermelon cake almost 8 years ago and I visited them again recently and the flavour was still so refreshing and delicious. It hasn't changed at all! I also tried their sesame cheese cake. It wasn't overly sweetened and the texture was very smooth. It is still one of my top 5 favourite cake restaurants in Sydney.

When filling out the online feedback request from their marketing department "Your cake made the cut but what didn't make the cut was your service. One service attendant attending to cafe goers walking in off the street and the likes of me, keen to pick up my cake is not enough for a business of such high regard. So I told the guy I was picking a previously organised order and he politely asked me to wait while he attended to the myriad customers in the store. That was when I noticed two other servers standing behind the counter, having a conversation. This struck me as inappropriate. If you stand behind a counter in a retail space you make yourself available for service, regardless of what rank or how important you might consider yourself. I politely interrupted their conversation, asking if they weren't too busy they might attend to my already paid for customer needs. As famous a customer brand as black star is, and as big a corporation as black star pastry gets the importance of customers never goes away. And yes I might be a bit "dough" but I am paying and I seem to remember consumer sovereignty, where customer is Queen. You are welcome to play your silly internal staff power games, but as I've already stated if you stand behind the counter, in a retail space visible to the public, you make yourself available for service. The server went on to defend the two other people by saying they were "service chefs"... And right there, in the title he gave them was the point I was trying to make. "Service" chefs, as in providing the service of said cakes to the public. The service chefs hurriedly went back to whatever it is they do. If you're going to employ people to stand around and talk that is your business. But if you employ such people in public facing positions then the public is going to expect more than a scowling response with one person left to deal with all and every request. Why should one person have to handle it all when clearly you're busier than one person can handle? Thoughtful regards etc"

Ordered this mango dessert. It tasted like gelatine and nothing else. We usually love the watermelon cake, but they are sold out completely when we went. The staff are not friendly either. I will come back because I like the watermelon cake.

Had the watermelon cake at Newton yesterday, worth every single cent. Friendly, helpful staff. Only problem was parking, but that's understandable given the location.

"Strawberry watermelon cake" must try!!! But I have checked the shop close time not match with actual. Closed time at 1500 in Apr.

I am reviewing the vegan "parcel" that has recently replaced the beautiful buttery flaky decadent vegetarian curry pastie that l loved. The new Vegan Parcel has unappealing tasteless pastry reminiscent of a burnt fortune cookie. The filling seemed to be a capsicum and tomato mix with a bitter after taste that's still in my mouth and is making me pull an unattractive face. And to top it off, the new "parcel" has come with a significant price hike to $8 - the same price as the more substantial and presumably tasty meat pies that Black Star sells. This change disrespects both vegetarians and vegans by taking away a great vegetarian pastie and replacing it with something horrid to fleece the growing vegan market. What a shame!

The Chocolate Amadei cake I had was old, dry, basically horrible... Even the first layer with some gold leaf on top was shrunken and dirty... Thanks guys first time in my life I felt screwed with my own money... I will advise everyone I know not to come even near your shops....

Have to say I was quite disappointed in the mango cake and the ‘decadent’ chocolate dessert we got at the Sydney Night Noodle Markets. The Mango Cake slice was on the small side and was partially frozen and the ‘Decadent’ Chocolate dessert was bits of broken up chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream on top and whipped cream. For the price you pay was expecting more.

Blackstar has lost its magic of a small business. It is the quality of customer service from most of your stores that stopped us from going back to you. Used to be a big fan of your cakes, pastries in your Newtown store. Since the fame, the staff at that store have this 'can't-be-bothered' look on their faces. They just want you to order, pay and get out from their sights. Probably due to the popularity and the influx of tourists. Prices increased over the years and portions decreased. Then we went to your Kinokuniya store, that day, there was a rather long queue. We joined the line and when it was our turn, the male cashier kept chatting to a lady, we assumed is his friend that was in front of us in the queue. As we are in a hurry and the queue was still long at this point, we would appreciate a prompt service. He saw us but chosed to not acknowledge us and continued chatting with the lady till we said 'excuse me' and to voice out our concern that we were in a rush?! It is a huge disappointment to us the overall experience of Blackstar pastry is today and for us we will certainly avoid going back there.

Black Star patisserie was welcoming and served great coffee and the watermelon cake was amazing. The only thing is that it is a small shop with not much seating area other than that a great experience.
