Review Salmon & Bear - Sydney

Justin Donnelly
Fantastic venue with a great menu and friendly staff. This place has a great ambiance to it from the moment you walk in, service is fast and friendly too. The food here is great! The Spanish closed door charcoal bbq grill they use gives such a great flavour to the many varieties of fish they offer here. Overall it's a fantastic venue offering a diverse range of dishes, all of which we had were exceptional. Definitely recommend checking out Salmon and Bear for a fantastic dining experience.

Salmon and Bear is a a casual eatery in Zetland, Sydney, across the road from the East Village shopping precinct. You can park in the shopping centre for 2 hours for free and head to the restaurant care free. It is a fish eatery which cooks the fish over charcoal in a Spanish Mimbrasa oven which gives the seafood a nice smokey flavour. This also gives you the sense of having your dinner at a campfire, and with the restaurant decor feeling like a log cabin, so it is very fitting. As we sit to peruse the menu, we are pleased to find they have a drink list with red and white wine by the glass or bottle, bubbles, beers and cocktails including aperol spritzers and a few Gins with home made tea and lemonade. We ordered the gin cocktails, perfect on a hot summer evening and helped take the edge of the working day. The menu listing Burgers and few classics. We begin with the trio of tacos; the sticky glazed salmon, crispy hoki NZ fish, and salt and pepper calamari, served on a soft corn tortilla with salsa verde, pickled pink onions and sriracha mayo. A good choice if you are after some variety. We also decided to order something different and went for the salt and pepper tofu as it looked extremely appealing. Nice soft little flavoursome squares with a crisp fried outer crust, flavoured with salt, pepper, shallots and chili, this was also served with a ponzu dipping sauce. One of their popular menu items is the Grizzly Plate ($27.95) for the original where you select a piece of fish (Ora King salmon, tuna, barramundi, hiramasa kingfish , or catch of the day) along with a choice of dipping sauce (salsa verde, peri peri, yogurt and dill, tartare or oyster and sesame) and any salads or side. For $32.95, you can add two sides. Sides include chips, mashed potato, coconut rice, sweet potato fries, corn salad, summer slaw, Asian greens or the garden salad. We opted for the Hiramasa Kingfish, cooked beautifully with a Smokey flavour and crispy skin. The salsa verde was the sauce of choice, the charred corn and the roasted veg for sides. Whilst veggies can sometimes be just veggies, the veggies at salmon and bear are on another level. They were boiled, grilled and then finished off again the oven, giving them a beautiful caramelised charred flavour. Topped with a honey mustard dressing and almonds, these a must order as your side dish. Poke seems to be the dish on everyone’s lips these days and thus we were happy to see this on the menu. For those not in the know, it is a rice and salad dish originating in Hawaii, topped with sashimi. It is a healthy and nourishing option. At Salmon and Bear, they have a few different options. Whether it be cubes of raw salmon, tuna, miso eggplant or the salt and pepper tofu, you can select your favourite . They are served atop salad or coconut rice, spring onions, avocado, seaweed and corn salsa, with a soy and sesame dressing or chilli and lemongrass, depending on your selection. Finishing off the night, we had to have the dessert. Just as you might have in wood cabin by the fire, comfort food is always good. A soft gooey brownie served with vanilla ice cream is certainly in that category. Salmon and Bear is fitting for the whole family as it has a casual vibe, reasonable prices and a menu with Cubs (or kids) choices. The service was brilliant and the manager in particular was excellent, with her personable nature, thorough knowledge and efficient work ethic. We really enjoyed all the food here and have been here a few times now, and will certainly be back.

Loved the ambiance, the fish were so beautifully done, we're already planning for future visits! If you're there for the first time, I recommend going straight to their bear plate with catch of the day, or their classic fish and chips. We kept getting hungrier every time a serve of that fish and chips past by.... Mmmm! The calamari/squid looked amazing too! Also the sweet potato chips are the BEST in Sydney if I dare say so!

Despite the slow service, our lunch at Salmon & Bear was great. The salt & pepper calamari was soft and tasted great, without being oily or chewy. I had the grizzly plate (fish + sauce + side for $24; extra side available for $4). The blue-eye cod was cooked well, but ever-so-slightly overcooked. The generous serving of corn salsa was refreshing and very tasty. A quick glance around the small dining space showed that the burgers are also generously sized. Overall, Salmon & Bear is a great, healthy and laidback seafood eatery. I would happily (and frequently!) return for more.

Simple ingredients executed very well! The salmon and tuna is so good! Dont forget about the crispy brussel sprouts! Great service and delicious food. What more could you ask for?
Daniel Michel
Delicious, very healthy. Salmon and veges all superb, brussel sprouts should be a staple. Ambiance and vibe lacking quite a bit the food was great

Cozy environment, friendly staff and VERY clean. The food served was exceptional, salmon and steak grilled to perfection, served with crispy sweet potato wedges - it taste heavenly in your mouth. Highly recommend the king salmon, a tender and juicy flavour bomb

Overall, not bad. Large portion, over cooked Kingfish, nice Poke. Went with a friend. She ordered a grilled Pike bowl, the combination was nice and tasty. Good presentation. Mine was the grizzly plate, ordered Kingfish, baked veges, dressing aside. Presentation looked good. Kingfish was way over cooked - tough as robber and tasteless. Baked veges are mush, can't be picked up with a fork. My bad that I forgot potato is vege...I expected at least some cauliflower, etc. For $30, rather disappointed.

Amazing Gluten Free/Vegan Options!
Being GF and plant based makes it harder to eat out (especially with friends who are meat eaters). Until now!
I have just discovered Salmon & Bear and I can't wait to come back. The menu has MANY GF and Vegan options on it that I want to come back and try more!
I had the Eggplant Poke Bowl this week and it may have been the most delicious thing I've eaten all year!
I can't wait to come back and try the crispy Brussels sprouts, the cauliflower and kale salad and more!

All the food we ordered were very fresh and delicious. Will definitely go back.

We ordered Fish and chips, fish burger, raw tuna poke. For chips we had normal chips and sweet potato chips. They were fluffy inside and crunchy outside.
Nice selection of fish, fresh and nicely grilled. The staff are friendly and helpful. Nice relaxing vibe. The only area for improvement is to be more attentive with refilling table water. Overall a fantastic experience.

Loved the food. Poke bowls were really tasty and a really good size. The sides were awesome especially the vege of the day brussel sprouts. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a healthy, fresh and scrumptious meal.

The service was brilliant also. I was served by Jane and Ben a young couple from the UK. They clearly enjoy their jobs and went out of their way to help and serve. AAA+

You know I never realised that the back of the menu has a picture of a salmon and bear on it.. literally mind blown! That's not the only thing that blew my mind here - food is spectacular and service is top notch.

Killer dishes for me were the salt and pepper calamari - lightly flavoured and paired really well with a sweeter than expected sauce. Ora King Salmon with Salsa Verde and a side of Roasted Carrots on steroids was insanely good. Ora King Salmon, otherwise known as wagyu of the sea, was cooked to perfection, beautifully flakey and still pink in the middle. Sorbet to end the meal was a banger, sweet and refreshing and delivered from Messina! This dessert would please anyone with a sweet tooth.

If you'd like to read more of my reviews, please check out my zomato page and visit @cynthiaeats_ on Instagram for more photos!

My thanks to Salmon and Bear and Food Shot for the invite.

I first tried Salmon and Bear at the Newtown location and was quite pleased with their take on seafood, not the standard through fare offered. The food is good and service pretty quick

Great food, fast service and reasonable price to get the fresh salmon in town! @salmonandbear_ 📌 I ordered ‘Poke salmon with seaweed salad’ 🥗🍣 hoki fish crispy tacos🌮 salt&pepper calamari 🤤 and The Big Grizzly Barramundi! All of them are awesome!!
Tummy Buddy
We have been to Salmon & Bear many times and the food is always good! Great healthy dinner option, especially if you are looking for a more casual/relaxed place to eat. We mainly come here for the baked King Ora salmon. The salmon is always cooked perfectly and goes well with the oyster sesame sauce and a side of roast veg or sweet potato fries. They also do great poke bowls! Fresh menu options and high quality ingredients.

Amazing taste of roasted carrot!!! Highly recommend ~~ nice service and environment. Fish tastes good with source~~the poke is Ok maybe it needs more soy source flavor

Not a lot of vegetarian option.
Enjoyed the atmosphere - Canadian vibe.
The edamame salad was refreshing

Super busy, staff was extremely helpful and friendly.
Great place to catch up for beer

Great customer service and attentive staff. The food was pretty average, but a healthier option if you’re on a health kick. Prices weren’t too bad either.

Very nice service, nice interior and food. Had the ora king salmon poke bowl, couldn't really get a hint of the soy and sesame seed sauce though, but the poke bowl was very filling and the portion was decent. The small mug of $5 lemonade was a bit pricey considering the size of the drink.
It was an overall nice experience.

I love salmon and a salmon specialist can get my business easily. Salmon & Bear does great with the cooking - good crispy skin but a really juicy interior. Having said that, I don’t see the obsession with ora king salmon - seemed less flavoursome than most. Given that, paying this much for a small piece of salmon might not be good value, even if you get a side with it. I've also had a tuna poke bowl - not the best tuna but pretty good ingredients overall that might not have lived up to the high price.

Actual rating [3.5]

Looking for a cosy Canadian cabin? Salmon & Bear is the spot to go for a Canadian experience, with its super friendly waiters and groovy Michael Buble soundtrack.

For dinner we had:

Chowder Fries ‘poutine of the sea’ ($14.95) - a creamy parsley sauce with mussels, clams, prawns and squid with beer battered chips and topped with crispy bacon and shallots
- I’ve always wanted to try poutine and I think that this seafood version was interesting but not excellent because it was a bit soggy

Original Fish ($27.95) with lemon herb butter, [special] side of brussels sprouts
- Fish was well cooked, pretty normal, sprouts were nice and had a crispy flavour

Salmon Poke ($21) - ora king salmon in a soy and sesame dressing served with corn salsa and avocado on coconut basmati rice
- Generous servings (YUM)

Albacore Tuna Poke ($21) - seared albacore tuna in a sweet soy and sesame dressing served on an asian style crispy noodle and slaw salad topped with sriracha mayo (YUM)

Fish curry special ($25.95) - chunks of hook and cauliflower florets in a mild mole curry sauce topped with crispy shallots and served with basmati rice

I’d say that overall the food was nice - not mind-blowing and a bit on the pricier side, although I guess it IS mostly seafood after all. We also had the ice teas which were a little bit underwhelming. I’d recommend going once if you’re looking for a new place to try out!

Salmon and Bear is located in Zetland. Salmon and Bear is best described as a restaurant that has cabin feel which serves up mostly fish and seafood dishes. It might even get you in the mood for venturing out into nature. I've been to Salmon and Bear in Newtown a few times however unfortunately it has now closed down. I always thought the food was delicious so I was looking forward to see whether the food at Salmon and Bear in Zetland was comparable.
Lily The Frugal Foodie
I'd highly recommend the fish pie. It was deliciously rich and comforting, perfect for the colder months.

We tried all three types of tacos. Unfortunately the soft taco shell was difficult to chew. Then ingredients weren't very exciting or tasty. However, if you want something light then you could get one or two of these.

Salmon and bear has 25% off on the entertainment book.

A cute little eatery in the heart of Zetland. Went here at around midday and there were a few other diners in there. Got seated straight away and handed our menus - mainly centred around salmon (as the name suggests).

Good prices and a great location. Small variety of menu options which all sound intriguing, with daily specials to choose from as well.

Overall a great little place to eat and I definitely recommend :)

Food recommendation: fish and chips!!🐟

Delicious food with excellent service. The staff is always friendly & served with big smiles. Love their crisp battered fish in particular, the batter was light & crispy and the fish was juicy & succulent. Poke bowls were excellent as well, all the ingredients were fresh with beautiful dressing. Salmon & Bear never fails to disappoint. 😍

I’ve actually been to both Zetland as well as Newtown stores. I love the grilled salmon with sweet potato wedges and I always order it. They also have a soft tacos which is nice and fresh. Menu is relatively simple but done well and I like to finish off with the Messina desserts made for Salmon & Bear.

I heard this place makes a mean poke bowl. I ordered the special, a spicy tuna poke bowl and it did not disappoint ! On a bed of fragrant coconut rice, sat a generous portion of chunky tuna sashimi pieces coated in spicy mayo. The addition of pineapple pieces, pickled ginger, avocado made each bite a textural flavour explosion. It was a clean and a very filling meal. If I could flaw it, perhaps a tad too salty. Regardless, service was great as the staff kindly explained the menu to me as a first-time visitor. I would consider $22 a fair price for some raw tuna.

First time having Poke bowl, and can I say it was delicious! Had the raw salmon poke bowl and it was a hearty lunch (plus a cider).. very prompt and friendly service.. will return..

Had Salmon & Bear delivered to our workplace in Alexandria. The food arrived very quickly and very well cooked, we were very impressed. My personal favourite is the Tofu Poke. The miso and sesame flavouring pairs so well with the seaweed and kale. Loved this bowl and can’t wait to try the rest! Could of used some more veggies however or a little more sauce, we all agreed that the bowls were a little dry. This could be however be because we delivered and didn’t eat fresh at the restaurant. All up, loved it! Thanks also #deliveroo

Extensive menu full of different kinds of seafood and snacks. However not too many vegan options but at least a few exist on the menu. I got the sav white wine along with fries. The staff are friendly and patient. My friend ordered fish and chips and said it was delicious. $7 for a small bowl of fries seems a bit excessive but other than that it was great.

fish and chips fried crisp very well and the oka salmon patty was delicious. waiter was pleasant and everything about the place was very good.

I'm going through a Poke bowl addiction at the moment, so decided to head here and give the poke bowls a try. Both were really good, filling amd well seasoned. The service was really friendly too.
Food Lover
Didn't expect much but I was really impressed. Crispy fish burger was very tasty, loved the pesto and the fish seemed very fresh. Also, really liked the potato scallops. Fish cakes were okay not really my taste though. The Sav Blanc was one of the best I've had at a restaurant considering the price so whoever put together the wine list did a good job!
Foodraves
Nice Western-bar themed interior decor with very friendly staff and service. Service speed was very quick.

We ordered: the Albacore Tuna Poke, which was quite a simple dish with a mix of flavours (soy sauce, slaw) - done nicely!; the crispy fish burger, which was indeed crispy and overall enjoyable however lacked structure; sweet potato fries - very very large, juicy, crispy and tasty but unfortunately there were only about 10 of them (for $6).

In general, food was 👌🏼 however portion size to price ratio could improve.
@KeraBearEats
I only come to get one thing, but that one thing is so amazing it deserves 5, which is the Poke bowl with Salmon.

The cured salmon is insanely good, so tasty and out of this world! The soy and sesame dressing is addictive! And they top it with this crispy, crunchy topping (don't know what it is but it is good!) resulting in a multi-dimension of texture that never fails to satisfy.

If you like sashimi you'll like this. It is cold though, for those who don't know what a poke bowl is, but it's good and S&B do it well.

Been to Salmon & Bear twice so far and had bad experiences on both occasions. Food was okay (not worth the money) but the service was even worse. The waiter (a tall slim guy) first got my order wrong and charged me for extra 7 dollars for which he apologized and fixed later. Towards the end, he accidentally spilled all of my friends mayo sauce on my sweater when he was cleaning up. Don't think I will ever come back again. I ordered the tuna poke bowl last time and it was plain and not tasty at all.

Another restaurant on my wish list and I finally got to tick it off my list tonight. We came here with some friends and as we both have kids we got there around 5.30pm and had no trouble getting a table inside.

The reason I wanted to come here was to try poke and their sweet potato fries looked amazing on food bloggers website. So I tried their albacore tuna poke which came in Asian style crispy noodle and slaw salad which was tasty and not too heavy. This way I had more room in my stomach to have their sweet potato fries which was crispy on the outside and fluffy in the middle. My husband claimed it was the best sweet potato fries he had had and tried their special fish pie. My son had their salmon and sweet potato fries from
their cubs menu but he wanted more salmon so we ended up ordering two of these for him.

For drinks I tried their rose and Pinot Grigio and my husband stuck with his coronas. My friends seemed to like their burgers and for dessert we tried both salmon and bear designed by Messina.

I really liked the food here and as it's not too far from our place, we will def be back!
Leon
A popular casual eatery which is popular for their tacos and luscious fish/salmon burgers, Salmon & Bear is energetic and down-to-earth. The restaurant features a wilderness themed interior with an artificial Alaskan antelope (I don't recognize animals, not sure!), clean wooden columns and furnishing which resemble a log cabin and long communal tables.

I got myself two of their popular tacos, the crispy prawn and fennel, and crispy fish. The tacos are accompanied with a generous serving of cabbage, pickled onions and mayonnaise. However, the fried fish and prawns were simply not up-to-mark and tasted like those from supermarkets.

I have to say, the crispy burger here is so good. It tatses crazy good with the taste combination. Beside, if you are the spicy lover, salmon taco will make you dumbs up.

Great service and an awesome meal. The grizzly plate is a great idea! The place has character and staff were always attentive and courteous.
Tom K
Small portion for food and based on the amount your paying, value for money was hard to come by. Service could be improved. Wait times were about 30 min plus. Baby seats were hard to come by which wasn't a great customer experience.
Lily
Not usually a big fan of fish. But this place makes pretty good fish burgers and their poke bowls are very satisfying. Love their sweet potato chips! Very friendly service to boot. Would definitely come back for more burgers and poke bowls.
Cami Carvajal
Very nice place in a very good location. The price is expensive for what they serve.. it is good but you expect more quantity. I order a salmon with some salad thinking that was the big bowl of salad.. bad luck but the salmon was good thou. Very fresh and good cooked.
Bottomlesspit
I came here to try their famous Poke bowls and I was pretty darn satisfied. I chose the salmon with seaweed and kimchi. The flavours were quite an explosion and the texture was awesome. A mix of crunchy and soft. The coconut rice was a great flavour combo too.

The only little let down is that it is quite salty so you don't really get that freshness that you probably want the poke bowl for, though it did seem more authentic to its Hawaiian roots because I feel like Poke bowls are being associated with Japanese cuisine in a lot of cafes now.

I love how fresh, delicious and well-prepared the seafood is at this restaurant. At this particular visit, we got there before the dinner rush so it was very easy to find a table. We ordered the special poke (tuna, crispy noodles and slaw salad) and the sticky soy glazed salmon tacos. Both were really good. I have had the salmon poke bowel delivered numerous times and I think that will always be my favourite dish from Salmon and Bear.

The serving was great. I couldnt finish. Be sure to come with an an extreme apetite! This place was brilliant. And service, so friendly! I had the salmon "bearger"with sweet potato fries!!
Hedwig'97
you can make ur order at the counter. Price are acceptable. I get the salmon bearger. it taste really good, just a bit spicy. the environment is a bit too dark.

Even though Salmon & Bear is quite hyped up for their poke bowls, I decided to try the tacos and fish burger instead since I've made poke way too much at home. The food came out within a reasonable amount of time and the visuals were on point. I silently squealed to myself as I saw the tacos were generously heaped with ingredients as I'm not a fan of tacos with stingy topping. I got all 3 types of tacos and my partner got a crispy fish burger with a side of sweet potato chips and corn salsa.
The prawn taco was definitely my favourite with the salmon being my least favourite as it tasted fishier than how i usually like it. The sweet potato chips were super crunchy and delicious. The fish burger was also tasty but towards the end, it felt kind of heavy so my partner couldn't finish it and you can't really go wrong with corn salsa.
Overall Salmon & Bear was an enjoyable experience! I have to try Grizzly plate next time.

****REVIEW UPDATE*****
I previously came here for the much hyped salmon poke bowl and wasn't overly impressed with my basically salty "deconstructed sushi bowl". However, I've returned for the Kingfish Poke Bowl and I'm BLOWN away! The Kingfish Poke Bowl, although not served with your usual rice, is the best Poke Bowl I've had! The Kingfish is fresh, there are so many textures from the seeds, toasted nori and those little wedges of sweet potato - YUM!!! That's what takes this dish to the next level. I also much preferred the sesame dressing which was flavoursome but not overpowering like their salmon Poke Bowl. I'll be ordering this again and again!!!

- RATING CHANGED FROM 3/5 to 4.5/5

When we come here for a grizzly plate combo (fish + side) the fish is always cooked and seasoned to perfection and the sides - be it roasted veggies, sweet potato chips or corn cobs have been very tasty.

However, the much hyped Poke Bowl in my opinion is quite overrated. Although it looks exciting and full of flavour, the primary flavour of the Salmon Poke Bowl seems to be soy sauce, so overall the bowl ends up resembling a deconstructed sushi roll...which doesn't excite me much.

The fish burger is also a bit dry and the fish patty tastes like some sort of veggie patty. The flavour and texture of the patty just completely missed the mark for me.

I think when we return we'll either stick to the awesome grizzly plates or try one of their other menu items
We were greeted by the nice waiter who sat us at a table outside where our dog could enjoy a fresh bowl of water. Great service and amazing food, ordered the salmon burger and salmon poke to share. Both dishes were amazing however the poke could've had less rice and more vegetables instead.
The fish the rest of the family had was excellent. Tasty and perfectly cooked. This included the salmon, Barra and fried fish
However my salmon poke was the worst I have ever had. Strange taste. Couldn't pin point if was the coconut rice, the fried onion or something in it. I asked for it without onion. Left a horrible aftertaste
To be fair would try the fish next time as that may be their strength
Cynthia Sutanto
The best poke I have tried thus far. Nothing quite like it. Made to perfection. Beautiful balance of different richness in taste. Well-cooked seafood dishes (no fishy after-taste). The service is awesome. Try the Poke Menu, I have tried Salmon and Tuna. I always come back for these.

Salmon and Bear is an upbeat cafe with Canadian vibes located in the suburb of Zetland. We were welcomed warmly upon our arrival and ordered the Salmon Poké ($20), Crispy Fish Burger ($11) and Sweet Potato Chips ($6). The Salmon Poke serving size was generous and the flavours and textures worked very well together. However, unfortunately was not worth the $20 in our opinion. The salmon also got a bit sickening after a while. The Crispy Fish Burger was, on the other hand, very delicious and the tartare sauce complemented the fish patty, having said this though we would have enjoyed more fresh vegetables in the burger. Overall, service was relatively fast and friendly and we would probably revisit Salmon and Bear!

the review on zomato was very high so I went to try salmon burger with chips, but the taste was very average...it was not bad, but I don't think It worth 4.6
Preet Eats 👍🏾👎🏽🤔😄😋
Quality food that is healthy and at a reasonable price. We did need an extra side but that's only because my friend is a big eater. Sweet potato fries, corn salsa and roasted veggies were all yum!

Loved the vibe of the place, the idea is so unique and creative. My boyfriend and I were dying to come to salmon and bear (we are massive seafood/salmon lovers) so when we got there after a hour drive we were hyped AF. We went to order and they had unfortunately ran out of salmon fillets 💔 It was so odd for a Monday night, wasn't very busy either... But we drove that whole way so we decided to try other things.

The catch of the day was beautiful, the vegetables were however bland. I ordered the prawn salad, it tasted like they were just defrosted, gave the salad a watery fishy bland taste. I just couldn't eat it so my boyfriend decided to give it a go, he couldn't eat it either so we left it (we hate wasting food) The salmon and prawn tacos were amazing and so was the calamari that we also ordered at the end. Overall It's nice, but not what I was expecting due to other reviews.
Eatwithmyfoodsafari
After hearing so many great things about the food at Salmon and Bear it was great to be able to experience it first hand for myself.

We had an epic feast; salmon poké, crispy fish burger, soft corn tortilla tacos, salt and pepper calamari and sides of Asian greens and roasted veg. It was all delicious but the highlight for me would have to be the poké; cubes of raw salmon in a soy and sesame dressing is served with corn salsa and avocado on coconut basmati rice in this Hawaiian style sushi salad. Mixed together, the nuttiness of the rice sets off the creaminess of the raw salmon and avocado with the corn adding pops of colour and crunch. Deeeelicious. Could eat this every day. Even the simple side dish of roast veg is elevated to new heights with the coal fired treatment from the mibrasa oven.

Our meal was overseen by a moosehead, contributing to that log cabin feel.

Overall, a fabulous dining experience which makes me want to go back for more!

I loved the food here! The salmon was cooked so perfectly; the skin was crispy. The sweet potato fries were perfectly crunchy. The salad was flavoursome and refreshing. Will be coming back again!
The Weekend Foodie
we were invited to salmon and bear, every time we get invited to places we walk out thinking "WOW, we have never eaten bad food via an invite, maybe a cocktail party but never a restaurant!".

Salmon and bear is a pescatarian's heaven. Sam is a pescatarian, and it can be somewhat difficult when i order a meat dish and cannot share it. We were pleasantly surprised to find that sam is able to order every single dish off the menu! That was a big tick for both of us.

For starters, we had salt and pepper calamari with ponzu sauce, the calamari was crispy and deep fried to perfection. And ponzu sauce... the perfect combo, better than mayo, ketchup or tartare!

Sam had a grizzly plate with catch of the day (alfonsino), roasted veg with peri peri sauce. We've only had raw alfonsino, this is the first time having it cooked with crispy skin. Roasted veg was delicious and well seasoned, peri peri sauce had a kick as expected. Sam adored this dish.

I had salmon poke - personally I preferred this to the grizzly plate, the serving is generous with blocks of raw salmon, corn salsa, avo on a bed of coconut basmati rice, topped with soy and sesame dressing. I loved it so much i want to make this at home!! The bowl was so filling and full of goodness i was able to skip dinner.

Salmon and bear serves fab ice cream from messina. Salmon is a strawberry gelato paddle pop dipped in white chocolate (that's pink), and bear is a chocolate gelato cookie sandwhich. I love cookie sandwhiches but ended up preferring the strawberry paddle pop because i was so full! For chocolate lovers, you will enjoy Bear, the chocolate flavour is rich and creamy.

The dining environment is chilled and laid back, approximate 15 mins walk from green square station. You order at the counter and food is brought out to you. Its a very casual environment, we coouldnt really fault the place and loved the food so much we've decided to give salmon and bear a 5.
Coffeebrunchanddinner
The vibe, the food, the staff - love love love it! When you first walk in you could be mistaken for thinking you were in a Canadian bar. However once you see the food coming out you realize this is the perfect mix between bar and restaurant. I went for the grizzly plate - at $24 you get to pick your fish, a side and sauce. For just $4 you can add an extra side and with options like sweet potato fries, Asian greens, roasted vegetables and coconut rice I would recommend going for two! If you choose the salmon as your fish then pair it with the salsa verde sauce. We also had the salmon bearger which was good but the dish to order here is definitely the grizzly plate. There is a good selection of wines and beer and the vibe is so good it's almost a shame how quickly the food comes out! Parking is free for 2 hours in the nearby east village complex.

I've been to this place twice for lunch now and have not been disappointed. There's always plenty of seating available despite it being the weekend and the staff are always so friendly. The food is delicious and cooked to perfection, on this visit I had the grilled barramundi with chips and tartare sauce and the crispy prawn taco.

A slice of the wild Canadian wilderness here in suburban Sydney. The cosy, intimate log cabin with friendly staff & efficient service makes you feel welcome and relaxed. Then there is the food. Simple, fresh, fuss free, delicious and healthy. Choose your fish for the grizzly plate & it will be fresh & cooked perfectly in their special Mibrasa charcoal grill oven. Add one of many delicious sauces such as the salsa verde or yogurt & dill plus some delicious sides, then you have a complete, healthy & beautiful looking meal. The fries are delicious but the sweet potato fries are phenomenal! Roasted veg is taken to anotjer level with a delicious honey & mustard dressing and the corn salsa is sweet & refreshing. The tacos are a great starter especially with the sriracha mayo, but the coating is a little thick. Its so crispy so it is delicious nonetheless. A small selection of wine & just as many beers are available for a little bit of indulgence. Walk out feeling satisfied, happy & glowing with a health halo.

Great local fish place. Love the grizzly plates. Slightly expensive for what you get but it is fresh and super tasty! Recommend if you're in zetland

Love this restaurant!! Such a great rustic vibe and the service was great! I had a grizzly plate with Salmon, roast veggies and a garden salad, beautifully presented, full of flavour and salmon was cooked to perfection, such a hearty meal!!. Highly recommend to wind down on a Friday night after a long week.

Came here one spontaneous cold and windy night, stepped inside what to be a American inspired Fish & Chip place. We sat at the bar as the seats were all taken and we didn't want to sit outside. We ordered the Fish & Chips and the Salmon Poke, both were super delicious - just a bit pricey. A great concept and would be back to try their fish burgers next time!

Had the poke and it was great, fresh, well priced and promtly served. Service was outstanding, couldn't do enough for us. Only thing to improve the experience would be to add coffee to the menu.

Salmon & Bear is one of the newer restaurants that we've visited, only having been there since 2015. It must be doing something right, for it's opening up another branch in Newtown. The restaurant was inspired by the wildlife of Canada, in particular, the way the bear snatches fish out of the water at that particular season. It's a way of reconnecting with the wild whilst it's at its most fresh. The interior decor was wooden and with a slightly dimmer lighting that's highly reminiscent of a cabin in the woods. It was very homely and immersive. At the Zetland branch, there's both indoor and outdoor seating - the tables were massive and a great size for fitting the dishes, which were predominantly of the seafood inclination. Given its prices and presentation of the dishes, it's a restaurant that falls somewhere between the corner fish and chips store, and a high end restaurant - sort of midrange.

Salmon and bear- a humble and healthy restaurant, located in a quiet neighbourhood.
We had the intention of going to the Newtown restaurant, but for some reason our navigator led us here, which was a God sent- Zetlands is such a beautiful area.

I had the salmon sashimi poke', and it tasted amazing! It's like a mix between sushi and a naked burrito. The corn salad and salmon steak was also cooked to perfection.

The restaurant itself gives off a low key and dim vibe. I didn't really enjoy eating in a dim room with Bon Jovi on full blast- but I did make the most of it.

I've been a regular for takeaway at Salmon and Bear as they are one of the healthiest options in the area for takeaway. I love the salmon grizzly plate however most times I find the salmon portion such a let down, lucking out only the first time which was an impressive piece leaving me thinking it was incredibly good value.

Outside of this, the flavour in the salmon is divine and its never under nor over cooked. I love their sriracha slaw, and being a miso fiend it is hard to not crave the miso butter corn every single visit. The asian greens are cooked well yet keep their colour and have a very delicate sweetness happy alongside sesame. I find also find the salsa verde spectacular.

I've tried to dine in, but found S&B simply packed out on weekends. If you go for takeaway, opt for pickup as they are fairly speedy in this regard, and delivery can take some time. Keen to try the new spot in Newtown and look beyond my usual order.

Salmon & Bear offers sophisticated and interesting seafood cooking at a midrange price. The portion sizes were very generous, especially given the complexity of the cook and components. The choice of ingredients highlighted the theme of back to basics seafood and fresh foods excellently. The customisation of the grizzly plate was quite a welcome addition: your choice of fish should really depend on the texture that you so desire. The fish tacos were an interesting blend of tradition and modern, foregoing some of the less savoury looking messy fish bits with a simple piece of fried fish. The liberal use of vegetables, in particular onion, corn and coriander really brought out natural flavours of zing, juiciness and wildness respectively. A great place to dine with friends and family to try out its many interesting dishes and combinations. Really looking forward to the opening of their Newtown branch!

Salmon and Bear is a seafood restaurant that it is relatively new to Zetland. I had the delight of ordering the salmon poke and it was delicious! It was beautiful fresh sashimi and all of the flavours complemented each other perfectly in absolute harmony. I really enjoyed it and for only $21 thought it was excellent value. I have to say that the serves of chips are scabby at best and not even that great. My boyfriend, who detest seafood (idiot!) ordered the battered fish and chips which he didn't enjoy at all, and I tried it and it was up there with the most average fish and chips I've had. The tartare sauce was delicious though! Our friend ordered the squid and I think that's a much better option - it looked really good and he loved it. Overall, I'd definitely go back for the poke but can't say anything else on the menu grabbed me, and my boyfriend refuses to return.

I'd heard mixed reviews about Salmon & Bear so I wasn't sure what to expect. I was very pleasantly surprised - it was lovely. I only ordered take away, but i could have easily stayed in the warm, cosy and ambient restaurant. The staff was friendly, the music added to the atmosphere and the food was delicious. It is expensive though and the portion sizes aren't massive. Apart from that I would definitely recommend!
Cecilia
Great food with good vibes and friendly service, this would be the place you wanna dine in. Had beautifully cooked grilled salmon and of course the delicious sweet potato fries! Came back to Salmon&Bear and tried the special menu 'fish pie'. Not surprising, I love it! Also the tuna poke would be my alternative healthy menu. Would recommend this place for sure.

Cool little West Coast North America vibe restaurant, lots on the menu and great beers on tap. Salmon burger was great, sweet potato fries and sauce were to die for and the tacos were OK. The fish in the tacos were great, but I think they were lacking some extra flavour from the toppings. Overall awesome place and I will return.

Delicious! I've been here a couple of times now and everything's been great. The salmon bearger has to be one of my favorites it's so full of flavor could easily go 2 😜 I'll definitely be back to try the other burgers and the poke bowls.

A favourite for a hot summers day, or a cold sydney night. Atmosphere of a cabin in Canada. The service is awesome, friendly and fun. Great for a group of friends, date or family catchups.

I love this place! As a person that doesn't eat meat I absolutely adore to have a place that only does fish based hamburgers, salads and appetizers. The sweet potatoes chips are to die for as well as the tuna burger. I tried the crumbed fish burger as well, was good, just not one of my favourite. The environment is nice, and suits everyone from couples to families or group of friends, staff is fast and friendly, highly recommended!

I'm a bit of a fence sitter with these guys. I've been 5 times since their initial opening and the food is pretty tasty overall, with most things that I've tried being quite flavoursome. Consistency & pricing are what brings these guys down.

The first few times that we went the food was done very well - nice crispy chips (potato & sweet potato) and the sides are always fresh, and the fish was cooked very well. Because of this we could justify paying just under $30 each (grizzly plate & drink) for casual dining.

The last few times we've visited we've noticed a change - the staff can get irritable on occasion and the fish doesn't have the same crispy skin that essentially "makes" it. Portion sizes of the same fish seemed quite different on one visit as well (taking into account weight, cut etc).

On our last visit we saw that the prices had increased further. Perhaps some of the issues we had were due to busy periods, but in having a restaurant in the middle of Zetland that's sort of expected... With the price increase but seemingly lacking consistency in service and food, we're going to give these guys a break for a little while :( It's definitely worth the try once so you can decide if it weighs up!

I really enjoyed my time here and didn't even realise the East village "foodie hub" existed! Good vibes, good food, polite-ish service. My friend and I both ordered salmon, which was cooked beautifully, and some sides. The sweet potato fries were spot-on, Asian greens and coconut rice were yum, corn on the cob was a bit of a disappointment (bit overdone). But overall, it was a great experience and I'm sure we'll be back.

If you’re going to refuel on omega 3s might as well make it at Salmon & Bear. Rest assured, no bears to be found. Mark Jensen (Red Lantern and Pork’d) Joel Katz (ex Seagrass Group) and Joe Ward combine forces to bring us sustainable fish in an Alaskan-themed setting. Willie the Boatman – Old Salty $6

Very nice food from this restaurant however the portion is super extra small. I enjoyed their fish of the day. I had it for take away (dinner time) and when I opened the box, I was so surprised at how small the fish piece was. I had to cook some rice to eat it with otherwise I know I will be crying for food in an hours time.

When I eventually went to the restaurant, I was surprised that the restaurant was 100% seafood restaurant. I thought the ‘bear’ bit refer to meat. So, yeah no other meat but fish here! Salmon poké was the clear winner for me at Salmon and Bear.

Vanessa: We had heard rumblings about a fairly new entrant to the up and coming food scene in Zetland that was treating it’s diners to seafood dishes with an edge. Salmon & Bear is a casual eatery that has a real charm to it with its “wood-cabin” feel similar to what you might expect to find in a Rocky Mountains chalet.

Definitely the highest quality food around Zetland! Whenever family visits from Melbourne, they always request we eat here as there is really nothing else quiet like it. Everything on the menu is of such high quality and to me, a healthier, more upscale, tastier version of fish and chips
Lauren Aliferis
At salmon and bear I had the tuna poke which was incredible! The tuna, rice and vegetables were all so fresh and mixed perfectly. If you love a bit of a spicy kick then the poke is for you! The atmosphere is great and the staff are super friendly. I would definitely eat there again.

Loved everything here, we were so full from all the food that we had zero room for dessert but cannot wait to go back and try the ice cream sandwich! Wish it was closer to the West, this would be a regular for us if it was. BEST sweet potato fries too and perfectly cooked salmon. YUM!
Princess_Porky
Loved it. And as a local, am definitely planning to return. The must order here is the crispy fish burger that comes with a filet of fish that had the lightest most airy batter you'll ever come across. The tuna poke (Hawaiian) sashimi salad was pretty awesome too. Keen to try the salmon version next time. Also really enjoyed their corn cob which comes slathered in miso butter. So good. Be sure to grab a dessert too. They have custom made Messina goodies that are absolutely delicious.

Stopped by S&B to sit out in the sun on a Sunday arvo. Ordered the Salmon tacos and the Salmon Burger which comes with a small side of sweet potato wedges. The burger was the standout for me although very greasy. The selection of craft beers made for an enjoyable casual weekend lunch. While I wouldn't race back for the tacos, the Salmon burger and side was definitely worth the stop in!!

If you're asked to choose salmon or bacon, which one is your pick? For us, it'll be salmon! Be it in the form of sashimi, smoked, cooked, you name it - salmon has its own charm and always tastes so good!. When I hear salmon and bear, the first thing in my mind was my Hokkaido trip where we visited a bear farm and learnt the fact that salmon was given as their daily meal! Well, to cut the long story short, the Salmon and Bear I'm gonna talk more now is not the one in Japan but a chalet-look "fish and chips" eatery in Zetland.

Nice quick and easy dinner option if you are in the area and not sure what to get!

This place serves alcohol so could also be a dinner date option.

Fish taco and the salmon fish cake are pretty good.

Also one of the best roasted veggies i have ever tasted are served right here! Goes well with the Moroccan salad and Spanish mackerel!

For dessert they have their own Gelato Messina inspired ice cream. Dutifully named Salmon & BEar! Very neat!
I was looking forward to eating here as the menu looked really good but was very disappointed by what I got. I ordered two of the tacos, the salmon taco and the crispy prawn taco. Firstly the tortillas were cold, the salmon was raw and cold in the middle and the prawn was coated in a cornmeal coating and it was very thick, dry and hard I couldn't taste the prawn at all. After having one bite of the tacos and pushing them aside I ordered the fish and chips as it was cheap and I didn't really feel like wasting money, it was nice, fresh and crispy just a tad oily. My friend ordered the blue eye cod grizzly plate with the garden salad and sweet potato fries both sides were nice but the fish was the problem at first it looked good, had some nice grill marks so we thought it was a skinless piece of fish which is fine but then we got to the bottom of the fish and realised it did have skin but it was so burnt they had turned it upside down on the plate so you didn't know! This is such a sneaky thing to do, that you have so little regard for your customer that you would try and hide your mistake because you didn't want to cook another piece of fish and cut into you profit! It wasn't just a little black it was charcoal. You obviously have no quality control in your kitchen and I won't be dining here again

Nice cosy bar situated next to the Zetland shopping complex. Today we ordered tuna burger, tuna steak, and fried hoki burger. We also ordered sides of grilled corn cobs, and sweet potato chips. The burger size are generous and a nice meaty delicious mouthful, while tuna steak was smoky and "rare", and so tasty. The sweet potato chips complimented the mains very well. Delicious and worth coming back for seconds again!

Ever dreamed of a Canadian log cabin holiday but too broke to travel halfway across the world?! Fear not my friends, Salmon & Bear brings you pretty close. Specialising in fish (coz bear is a little hard to come by in Sydney), the kitchen churns out some top notch dishes and salads with a mexican twist.

The name of the game is fish. Grilled to perfection and seasoned impeccably. Portion sizes are a little small but prices are reasonable so double up or try their burgers and nachos.

Conveniently located next to the East Village shopping complex, enjoy a quick bite before some wholesome shopping at Taste Growers Market or Colin's Butchery, where tie and flat cap wearing butchers are cooler than you!

Nice spot, good reasonable pricing for fish items such as fish tacos, fish/salmon/tuna burgers with sweet potato fries options also, i had the fish burger, tbh a bit too much shredded cabbage in it for me but nice dressing and good portion servings!

If your looking for delicious seafood cooked perfectly in a casual environment then go here asap! The food here is amazing and the flavours are beautiful. The atmosphere is very relaxed set in Zetland and the locals love it here. Customer service is very attentive and they are very helpful. They also serve alcohol so grab a wine or a beer and order up! I highly recommend the spanish mackeral and the fish and chips! Dont forget to get to dessert too!

Salmon and bear feels like madmex but with a focus on fish. The grizzly platter comes highly recommended as you can choose your selected fish, sauce, 2 sides or salad. We selected blue eye cod with salsa Verde, corn salsa and coconut rice. I really enjoyed this combination as the flavours quite complemented one another. Coconut rice was a stand out for me as it was fluffy basmati with a hint of coconut. Salsa Verde was a good accompaniment to the grilled blue eye cod, which was very simply seasoned with salt to preserve the freshness of the fish. The cod skin was grilled to crisp perfection unfortunately the fish itself was overdone.

Moving on to the tacos. We ordered 2 soft tacos: the glazed soy salmon and the crispy prawn and fennel tacos. These didn't quite do it for me. The prawn was not crispy and I did not taste fennel. The soy salmon was cooked well and was flaky but the accompanying ginger didn't do enough to amplify the flavour combination. The tortilla shells have a very strong flour or corn smell and a really heavy texture that overpowered the fillings. I think a lighter tortilla shell or maybe even a crispy taco shell could have made a big difference.

I enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of salmon and bear. I like that the flavours were not overpowering and there was the right amount of simplicity in the flavours but its probably best to stick to what they know best, basic fish dishes. I really like the concept of salmon and bear and hope they'll keep improving.
Sir And Mlady Dine Out
Salmon and Bear is a seafood concept and the venue is quaint and cute, seating around 75. The décor is reflective of being in an Alaskan hunting lodge - and it certainly looks the part.

There is a backdrop of Alaska on the wall which is quite spectacular. The food is good restaurant quality and it is served in a relaxed and casual atmosphere. It really is nice, simple and value for money eating.

We sat at a lovely recycled timber table - but you can also eat at the bar. They serve two beers and cider on tap and there is also a selection of wines.

Mlady cannot drink white wine so she has to have either a rose or red with her meals. Sir enjoyed a beer.

They have a mibrasa oven brought in from Spain which is impressive and everything is cooked in it over charcoals - even the vegetables. Charcoal from Queensland is brought in to be used in the oven as it is very dense and provides a subtle smokey flavour.

In search of some delicious food after a long day at the pool, we travelled to Zetland to sample the newly opened Salmon and Bear! We started off with a brand new menu item, which has only been in store for a week! This was the Salmon Poké, a traditional Hawaiian style sushi salad with raw Ora King Salmon marinated in soy and sesame, with coconut basmati rice, corn salsa and avocado.

Fish fingers for close to $20. No thanks. Nice cabin like fit out though with friendly waitresses but the guy that took my order was pretty much a double.

I generally don't order fish mains when eating out because the chance of getting overcooked fish is just so high! It usually happens on the rare occasion I have ordered fish, and seeing as both my parents are amazing cooks, I tend to only eat it at home. But you can't go to a seafood eatery and not try one of their specialties! And I have to say, I was quite impressed with what we were presented with.

I had the salmon with the sweet potato fries and corn. The salmon was cooked perfectly. The corn had such beautiful flavours. But the fries...could not stop eating the sweet potato fries (and the peri peri dipping sauce is superb). We also had the tacos. Fresh and tasty. Finished with the messina ice creams. For me, the chocolate was perfection.

Overall, I loved everything that we ordered.

The fish is better then most restaurants. The salmon with salsa verde was amazing! Definitely recommend to anyone even if your not a fan of fish this place will convert you. Also the tacos, sweet potatoe fries with peri peri dip and corn are also a must.
