Review Lumiere Cafe - Sydney

Chao Wang
Food was ok, but expect to get your order for 40min. An old woman asked how was the meal when checked out, I was being super polite and honest to compliment food first then said a bit long wait for the food. Surprisingly, the old waitress with purple dye on hair said in a loud voice, our food are freshly made, so 40min wait is normal šŸ˜¤. I was hoping she at least apologised for a bit, but this was the attitude I got. After a few hours I still keep thinking of how rude she was. I checked the google rating before going to this cafe and rating 4.5 is really not bad. However, 4 is for the food we had (Cok Madame and Zucchini fritter), and 0 for the old waitressā€™s attitude. So itā€™s for sure Iā€™ll never come back again, and i wish you keep the waiting time longer and longer šŸ˜‚

I have been to so many cafes in my travels..and I am one of THOSE people who likes things just 'SO'... as for this cafe I can honestly say... WOW... WOW.... WOW.. the meals are just the right size leaving you fulfilled and the amazing thought out flavour combinations are just mind blowing eg.. rose water shots with a breakfast dish... WHAT!!!!! The bar has been set for quality and quantity at this very clean and tidy cafe.. with a very inclusive multicultural atmosphere the cafe really is my pic of Sydney's cafes...stop in and say hello you will love it.. ( I am no way associated with this cafe except for loving the place) pics provided is my meal...

Had a wonderful brunch on Sunday afternoon here, highly recommended. The cafe was very busy when we arrived however was greeted promptly by a lovely blonde guy who got us a table right away. Took our complicated coffee order and juices by memory and came out promptly and correct I was impressed. He also informed us there was a 30min wait on food which was fantastic to know. A few minutes after receiving our drinks he returned to take our food orders and was very informative about the menu, and was able to cater for my dietary needs, food came out in about 25minutes and tasted amazing A+++ to the chef. After finishing we went to the counter to pay and was very happy to be-able to split our bill. Multiply staff thanked us for coming as well left. Definitely will go back

My partner and I are locals and we regularly go to Lumiere for their delicious breakfasts and lunches. Not only is the location amazing, with lots of sunshine and (dog friendly) outdoor seating, but the personal service from the friendly young staff keeps us coming back. If you are in the area we would thoroughly recommend you stop in for a meal or just a quality coffee and one of Effieā€™s homemade cakes! Itā€™s Mardi Gras now and there are fun events going on at Lumiere so keep an eye on their Facebook page. G&A

Always a favourite! The team pride themselves on exceptional service and take their menu very seriously. The service is fantastic, and meals freshly prepared. Very popular with locals particularly on weekends, so recommend booking for a table! Meals always make any wait worth it in peak times

Amazing quality brunch and coffee. I had the greek eggs and loved loved loved it. Space and staff are welcoming. Relaxed local vibe, despite how popular this place is. nice to see this long-term Surry favourite is still going strong and quality is 2 thumbs up.

Came in for a coffee. Asked if they did egg n bacon rolls by chance. They said theirs was famous so i gave it a go. Every bite was like spot on. Very happy to return. And get 2 next time.. Milk shake coffee cups should be mandatory. But very satisfied with the quality latte offered

One of the best coffees in Sydney, in a bright and inviting space, with a fantastic menu. The truffle scrambled eggs and chorizo were cooked perfectly and the burger was delicious. The fresh juices are a must try as well.

The best eggs we have ever eaten..... yummy coffee delectable juice and smiling friendly helpful staff....what else can you ask for in breakfast.... next time we are in Sydney we will be back

What a great find! The breakfast menu is out of order crazy good. The staff were all so attentive and friendly. I loved sitting out in the courtyard people watching. Will def be back.

Lovely cafe! Met my friends for lunch at their fav cafe! Didnā€™t disappoint. I ordered the scrambled eggs with truffle oil so delicious. The coffee was so good I had to order another one.

I dont know how many years I've been going to Lumiere. Coffee is always good. Food is always good. Service is always good. Smiles are always on the menu. So hey? What's not to like? Others come and go. Favourites tend to hang around.

Water mouth šŸ‘„ Croissants šŸ„, especially the almond ones but most importantly, the quality of the service. Melbourne service in Sydney said by the owner and that is true! Amazing food and juices and remarkable service.

We just happened upon this cute little sidewalk cafe about a block off of Oxford. It was a great find! I had the ā€œsomething Sunriseā€ fresh juice drink with pineapple, watermelon, orange and mango(?) maybe. It was delicious. I also had the ham and cheese croissant, also great. My husband had the omelet and it was huge and delicious as well! The servers were friendly. Altogether a great experience!

Great service, friendly staff and excellent food!! Will be back

Love the food, always fresh and delicious, amazing friendly service, great atmosphere, seating outside in the sunshine or shade.. I'm a regular local ļæ½

I really like this place, great food, coffee and atmosphere. But the service is just getting worse. Waiters are not on it, orders take too long and today I was forced to move to a different table because a group of 3 wanted outside. Mind you, that table was a small round table. Rude.

Simply good food ļæ½ and good service Place makes me happy ļæ½ Thank you for looking after me always ļæ½

My long black coffee was so well made that I had to have a second. I had a quick toasted croissant with jam with the first cup and it was all served briskly by the friendly team. A lovely experience.

Poor service, staff has no clue about what they're serving. Asked for poached eggs and received boiled ones instead. The answer of the waitress 'it looks poached to me, it's just not running'. SERIOUSLY????

Went here with 7 other friends and they were very hospitable and kind! The coffee was great and the all day breakfasts was absolutely perfect! Very pleased!

Though this place well known for their variety of breakfast menu, we landed up there for lunch šŸ„— The food is delectable and service is good. The food portion is quiet huge and they do suggest you on the portion of the food you order and which will help you to place the order. I ordered fish and chips and which was delicious šŸ˜‹ and filling. Their drink šŸ„¤ menu also good and really refreshing . I will definitely visit this place again in my next visit to Sydney šŸ˜Š

Decent cafe in the heart of CafƩ central in Sydney. Wait staff were friendly and made the experience a nice one. Food proportion was good and reasonably prices as well. Would definitely venture back for brunch.

I had a really underwhelming visit here at Lumiere despite always seeing the place so very crowded. We were seated close to the service area of the cafe but our coffee orders were lost for some time. I ordered sides to my dish only to be shown judgmental facial expressions which really isn't necessary. The menu is nothing short of gigantic and frankly all the options leave it really difficult to decide on food. Fortunately there's time as the service was a little slow and seemingly short on staff this day.

Was after their prawn n scallop omelette but found that menu has changed. Shame. Looking at the new menu (uploaded feb 2018), it seems quite pedestrian by hipster surry hills standard. Not wanting to up and leave, we decided to order. In hindsight, why da hell did we get sumthin w maple bacon in both dishes?

french brioche toast w maple bacon bananas n maple syrup 2.75/5, never quite a fan of anything sweet, i insisted on ordering this despite funny looks from my missus. Oh boy, was it sickeningly sweet w the maple syrup drenching everything including the already sweet maple bacon. The only way i could eat it was to have a slice of the bacon w each mouthful. Of course the caramelized nana was sweet af too. Despite not finishing the dish, i was still full past lunch time. My fault for ignoring my missus.

toastie stack w cheese maple bacon pumpkin poached eggs n bacon jam 3/5, gotta luv her when she duly offered to swap dishes w me. Of course being the considerate man that i am, i wouldnt. I did take a full mouthful (minus the eggs). Not an outstanding dish but immeasurably better than mine. The bacon jam was sweet as well gosh but went well w the linseed toast. 1 of the poached egg was perfect, the other way firmer.

I like the airiness of the venue w plenty of outdoor seating arranged in a semi circle wrapped around the building. No issues w service.

Very cute cafe with lovely staff and good prices. My eggs were poached perfectly however a friends were slightly over done. Absolutely love the brioche bread on the benedict (could have been toasted a little more). Fresh salmon, and a good size however it was the hollandaise that was a bit of a let down. It was very very runny and was completely absorbed by the brioche. It also lacked that tartness. I love that they make freshly squeezed juice and the coffee was also great. Good fries and friends were a fan of the sandwiches and breakfast burritos.
Love At First Bite
Lumiere is a large and spacious cafe in on Bourke Street in Surry Hills with an extensive brunch menu and generous portions. We have been here a couple of times with friends and will share our experience on both occasions. The first time we ordered five dishes to share. The three savoury dishes were the roast pumpkin and baby beetroot salad with grilled haloumi, crumbed feta, roasted almonds, sesame seeds mixed greens and a yoghurt tahini dressing, the scrambled eggs with tomato and avocado on sourdough bread, and the eggs benedict with poached eggs, ham and hollandaise sauce. They were all classic brunch dishes done well, the salad was filling and delicious, while the eggs benedict and scrambled eggs were both cooked well and full of flavour.

Lumiere has been around for years and outlasted numerous cafes and businesses in the struggling St Margaret's complex. A quirk of the Sydney market. The place has never really appealed to me because it comes across as just another generic cafe, however I did enjoy the hot cakes. Prices are hefty with many dishes around $20. Food was good, service was very friendly, coffee was okay. Nice outdoor area with shade.

My family and I came here for brunch as it was a cafe I wanted to try that was opened on a public holiday. As the weather was a bit windy and we had kids in tow, we waited about 10mins for a table inside.

As the cafe was so busy, it took some time for someone to take our order. Many dishes were ordered but my BIL & I had their corn stack with poached eggs, bacon, avo & homemade tomato relish served on sourdough toast which was pretty generous in size and tasty. My hubbie and MIL had their brekkie burger which they found also found okay. Spaghettini was ordered for one of the kids as well as eggs and toast for my son.

With their drinks, we tried their iced chocolate but found it was too much ice and not enough choc in flavour. The highlight being their berry smoothie. My husband had their Summer sunrise but he preferred the berry smoothie.

Overall, generous portions and good food. There is a 10% surcharge for public holidays though.
Issac_eatsalot
Amazing! Discovered by proxy because I walked to a venue nearby. But this is a hidden gem. The signature toastie stack and French toast with banana and bacon were an amazing start to the day!
Lunch Pie
Great location and a great menu with lots of options. First time here for breakfast. Ordered my usual of scrambled eggs and bacon. Eggs done beautifully and bacon cooked perfectly. Bread was beautiful. My friends opted for a variety of dishes; all of which were great. Coffee was good but not wow. Only downside is the service which was quite inconsistent. Had to go and grab our own menus, ask to be served and ask for water.

Great vibe, great food and fantastic service. Had an awesome breakfast at lumiere on the weekend and will definitely be back when next in Sydney. The one thing that stood out the most was the service, everyone was so happy and friendly. I had the special breakfast which was hummus and pumpkin on toast with poached eggs and dukkah. Loved it! So tasty and light, great for my hangover :) my friend had the Gruyere, bacon and pumpkin on toast and that was also very tasty and very generous with the bacon. I only have one small complaint, I had the green and lean fresh juice and all I could taste was celery, none of the other ingredients.

Great coffee and service, the place is always busy with beyond friendly staff.

Great for brunch and a relaxed catch up with friends.

One of the best cafes in Sydney
Rebecca Flett
Waited over half an hour just to have my breakfast order taken, in which we had to ask several times to have our order taken! Currently after 40 minutes we are still waiting for our eggs.
They cater for so many people yet don't hire enough staff to facilitate so many people.

Has ruined the experience and morning completely. Had to put more money in the parking meter because we didn't think we would need more that 75 minutes for breakfast!!!

What is a handful of girlfriends to do when they want to catch up? Why, go out to brunch of course. On this particular occasion, the girlfriends involved were Jo and Bez and the brunch venue was LumiĆØre Cafe.

After a spot of morning yoga, I met up with the girls at the cafe and we proceeded to order brunch. Because I am a sucker for burgers and there are about 5 burgers on the menu, I had to order one, opting for the breakfast version. Despite its messiness, it was absolutely delicious and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The scrambled eggs were fluffy and paired beautifully with the hollandaise sauce, with the sweet brioche bun adding that extra bit of flavour. I was a little skeptical about the smoked salmon initially but it tasted wonderful with the rest of the elements. Overall, it was an extremely satisfying burger and well worth the $20.

Very impressive brekky menu. I had the tiger prawn and scallop omelette with bean sprouts, chives and snow peas. Sweet chilli sauce to accompany. Superb...highly recommended if you are hungry. Great coffee which is essential for this reviewer. Lucky locals!!
Andrea
Service was good! But, food was not nice. The king prawn and scallop omelette that I had was not good. Didn't like it at all. Fish and chips that my friend had was only okay.

Although I don't live in NSW, I always try to have breakfast at Lumiere when I'm in town. While I haven't tried their lunch menu I can testify that their breakfast menu is great. For first timer's I'd recommend the Ricotta Hotcakes.
Bw_betman
Average food, average service. Didn't particularly like the brioche bun in my brioche breky burger. Coffee and decor were nice. The tables are placed in a way that makes it hard to get into the middle though.

Just visited Sydney and Lumiere for the first time from the states (San Francisco) where there is no shortage of amazing food. Lumiere was so good we ate breakfast here multiple times during the week. So many creative/interesting dishes on the menu. Food was amazingly fresh, well presented and very creative. Loved the coffee and friendly chats from owner and staff. Great portions!! Felt like they were our friends by the end end of week when we said goodbye. I would highly recommend!

There aren't much brunch places that I visit more than 1 time, cause I'm always open to find someplace new to explore. But somehow, Lumiere Cafe and Patisserie in Surry Hills is an exception, for I've been here at least 4 times, and I'll still be coming back in the future. Maybe it's the good food with generous portion, maybe it's the location that's convenience, or maybe because I like the natural light coming in to all parts of the cafe.

This was my second visit to Lumiere, I like going to Lumiere because they have have an extensive breakfast menu and their food proportions are HUGE. I felt like omelette on that day but I was struggling whether I should get smoked ham or the vegetarian omelette. The waitress suggested the vegetarian one, she said she liked the haloumi cheese with the egg so I took her suggestion. The omelette turned out to be a bit dry for me but I really like the grilled haloumi cheese and the firm chewy texture it has (was my first time having haloumi). Besides, it would be great if they served it with multigrain toast instead of plain white toast. I was super full after finishing the omelette as you can see the size of the omelette was about the size of my face lol (check out the photo underneath where I was holding my dish). I was a little disappointed with the omelette but I will definitely come back for other breakfast options!

I'm Still Hungry
The corn cake itself tastes quite nice ā€“ thereā€™s that subtle sweetness of the corn permeating through, and the texture is inviting and crunchy. The bacon was cooked as well as Iā€™d like it ā€“ the rind slightly burnt so Iā€™m actually tempted to eat it. I usually wouldnā€™t want to waste it, even rind so itā€™s great that they did it that way! The toast I didnā€™t like so much ā€“ it was too tough for me and I had to work it extra hard just to take chewable bits out of it. As a result, I couldnā€™t really appreciate the taste of it.

During dinner with Grab Your Fork , we couldn't help but grill our dining partner for some good breakfast tips. When you're a food blogger, forward-planning meals is not only convenient, but practically essential! H suggests a few fantastic sounding places, and after some research once we're back in our hotel that evening, our mission is simple - brioche French toast with banana and bacon , at Lumiere Cafe in Surry Hills.

This coffee was strong with a round, full bodied flavour. The reason I'm not giving this five stars is because it had too much froth and was too hot.
Esther
Bottom Line - Good place for breakfast or brunch and people watching. Even better place to grab a quick pastry and a coffee. Don't get me wrong - the brunch food is delicious.
Gastronomous Anonymous
The cafe is cozy and brightly lit. Itā€™s hard not to drool over the scrumptious looking cakes and bread. The chai latte is one of the nicest I have had.

This cafe is located in the St Margarets precinct opposite the wonderful Object gallery and is well positioned to take advantage of the afternoon sunshine. The salads ordered are generously portioned but I found the dishes a bit all over the place on the

Lumiere Cafe is airy and bright, with modern, stylish decor and plenty of seating inside and out in the sunshine ā€“ lots of great spots for people-watching. The breakfast menu is extensive and (here are more magic words) available all day.

Great food, great service. I went to Lumiere with a group of 5 for breakfast, and I had been told it was good, but it exceeded my expectations. The coffee was brilliant (as was my girlfriends after a 5 minute chat with the waiter about coffee strengths), the service great (all very friendly and couldn't do enough for you), and the food was not just really well prepared and of a high standard, but you got a decent sized portion - too many places in Sydney seem to think it's ok to give you a paltry amount if they put enough adjectives in the menu. What topped it off is the location; despite being close to the road, it's not load or crowded or feel anything like you're on a thoroughfare, and it is nicely shaded from around, so you aren't sweating your balls off or getting sunstroke while eating.
I will definitely be returning!

Cold and Slow. Lumiere is always a great recommendation for a nice solid Breakfast. Though after waiting 40 min for Breakfast down the road at The Book Kitchen and leaving we headed to Lumiere with the confidence that we would be served appropriately and quickly. Yes again a Monday morning and not that busy, we sat outside due to having our dogs with us, first critic is to make sure you have enough Gas in your heaters as a Monday morning 11am is not acceptable to say you have run out of Gas for your heating. After taking a seat we explained our previous situation down the road to the waitress as to which she told us that she would hastily put our orders in to make sure we did not wait to long for our food. Yet again another establishment who seems to ignore their outside customers. We began the waiting game again, order after order came out, even to a few we saw seated after us inside. So simply after 20 min of waiting we got up and left. How hard is it to get your service staff right?

I've been visiting Lumiere since I moved to Sydney 7 years ago. The food is always beautifully presented and delicious, service always terrific too as is the coffee. It's a great little spot- highly recommend the grilled haloumi and wilted spinach omelette, along with the chorizo and gruyere cheese omelette!
Lucy
The food was AMAZING! So fresh and perfectly cooked, I would go here everyday if I wasn't a student! The service was also very good, all round HIGHLY RECOMMEND!! :)
Simon Byrne
The grilled chicken sandwich is delicious!
Ronin47
Competent food, busy location. Had corn cake stack - tomato relish already added on the poached eggs that I didn't particularly carefor. Corn cake was good - other items on breakfast menu are pretty standard. Clean modern place. Busy area with Woolworths next door.
Sydneyrover
Guys!! Seriously!! What is up with these shots of coffee?? I order a coffee and I'm not faked what size I like and you deliver me a flat white that is gone in 3 gulps! It's a total scam. Look how think your cups are to disguise the volume of liquid that fits in the cup. This must stop
Tim G
Really impressed!!! I think it was the fastest coffee I have ever been served, it's as if the waiters read my mind when I walked in!
Definitely try the lumiere eggs Benedict, tad pricey but hands down the best eggs Benedict I have ever had. Comes out on a croissant with prosciutto and asparagus, Absolutely delicious!!!!
Georgia
Whoa, um, lots of similar reviews from January 5?! Anyway, I really like Lumiere. I've only ever been served by their midweek waitress (I think she might also be the proprietor?) but have always found her friendly and attentive - once even arranging to fit a large group of us outside on little notice. Location is sunny and airy, perfect for a chat or a quiet meal. The mixed berry ricotta hotcakes are worth all the rave - thick but not as doughy as a pancake, and the honeycomb and creme fraiche goes perfectly. I've also tried the eggs Benedict, the brioche French toast with bacon and various sandwiches - all delicious. Coffee is good too. Well worth a visit if you are near Taylor Square!
Jaclyng
Love the corn cakes here!

Will be back!. Fabulous service, Portion size is great - can't wait to go back!

Great find !!. Fantastic find in inner Sydney. Fabulous Coffee. Great service. Ricotta pancakes to die for.
Will be back.

Delicious. On recent trip to Sydney, found this great cafe. I had delicious scrambled eggs and the kids had ricotta hot cakes which I tried and found to be scrumptious. I always worry about getting a decent coffee when travelling but Lumiere didn't disappoint. Fabulous! Very friendly service too so we returned the next day for some more lovely coffee and lunch. Back there again next trip to Sydney!
Antoine909
I had the best coffee (or two) in a long long while at Lumire. Great food and served by a caring team too. Well down guys. I will return!
Sarah
Great service, I felt like they went out of there way to accommodate me. Also good quality food. Would definitely go again!
Vicki Matthews
Great Dining. Lumiere is just the best. We just keep going back time after time, the Ricotta Pancakes are to die for. Always lots of new items on the menu too. Warm and friendly staff, and the best flat white on the planet !!!
Thoroughly recommended.

Just Awful.. Dreadful service. Either didn't care or rude. Avoiding eye contact.

Extremely long wait for food and coffee. Food is not cooked to order. Fried eggs were congealed and cold - had been sitting in a bain marie for hours. Tiny portions. Very expensive.

Absolutely dreadful. Don't bother.
Lawrence Guan Teoh
Pleasant place for breakfast. Well presented, good flavor and abounding in freshness. Good street ambiance for a lazy Sunday brunch. All food is made on premises and pastries are mouth watering..
Bina
Great spot to have Sunday Best breakfast .... Looking forward to go back for corn cake and hot cakes
Pat Geale
Quick service. Nice coffee. Great corncakes and well priced. Surry hills stand out.
Kit
Very poor service. Seated and waited 10 mins for somebody to come and serve us and nobody bothered. Only three waiters serving the whole cafe. End up walking way. Don't think they even know we were there in the first place.
Surry Native
So much better since new management - the attitude has disappeared. Consistently good breaky and coffee
Lee
You should try breakfast in lumiere one of the best in Sydney
Monica
Taste it for yourself.. I went there with a couple of friends and all of the food were amazing. you must definitely try the wagyu burger and hot ricotta cakes.
Catherine
HOT CAKES !!. OMG, this morning for breakfast I had Lumiere's ricotta hot cakes, they were amazing, the best I've had in Sydney...and a great long black....I'll be back
Max
Great place. Fantastic cafe with a tasty and reasonably priced menu. The omelettes are divine.Coffee is one of the best i have tasted in Sydney. Very busy place and nice and casual.Service terrific .
Heneedsfood
Nice coffee. Can't say anything about the food as I didn't eat here, though I thought the coffee was pretty decent
Kieranb
Atrocious! The day after the Mardi Gras and was the worst service ever. We weren't the only ones complaining. A friend had a pie with no filling. They replaced with another pie with no filling. My food came after my friends had finished eating. Never going back.
John
JOHN. Surry hills local- great food but really slow service staff not friendly

Great for breakfast/lunch. Try the ricotta hotcakes or the brioche!
