Review Brickfields - Sydney

Janice Concepcion
Top-tier breakfast place! Wide range of top quality breads -- some of which are incorporated into their breakfast dishes. The beef brisket was delicious! Could use less sauce, honestly, so that you can taste the beef and bread better. The mushroom melt was surprisingly rich! Different kinds of cheese and mushrooms, and some jalapenos for some kick. Best to go early in the morning to get ahead of the long queue, especially if you wanted to dine-in. Lots of 1P-free and 2P-ticketed parking spots around the area.

It's a sandwich with a lot of contents. You can enjoy various flavors. My recommendation is a sandwich that starts with bacon. I had a good meal. I haven't tried sandwiches in many places, but I can recommend it right away. It was a good meal. Thank you.

On a search for the best almond croissant, I went to Chippendale today. Brickfields , a hustling bustling busy corner cafe is located in the heart of Chiopendale and had lots of outdoor seating for take out customers (?). Since I only bought an almond croissant, my wait was not long at all. For the price of $6.50 (or was it $7.20? Can't remember), it certainly was not the best looking almond croissant. It came with nice amount of sliced almonds on top and the almond paste was only inside. Also the time I picked it up was close to noon, so it wasn't crispy fresh. Will have to give another try earlier the day.

First time visit to this Bakery Cafe and is one of the best in the Chippendale area. I just seen some reviews and thought of giving a try. I had Almond Croissant, Toasted Croissant with Cheddar Marjoram and Tomatoes. Best part of the Turmeric Latte which is my best ever I had in my life. Must visit Cafe in Chippendale.

I feel very sad giving Brickfields a 1 star review. I’ve waxed lyrical about this place to so many people. But it has to be done. Brickfields almond croissants were a thing of legend. People would come from all around Sydney to Brickfields to have these almond croissants, and I was one of those. For a time I worked in an office in Chippendale and on some Friday mornings I would walk over to Brickfields, sit on the wonderful bench by the window and savour Sydney’s best almond croissant while sipping an expertly made coffee (featuring Mecca beans). Sadly this legend is not just dead, it has been killed. I went there a week ago and I was shocked when I saw the appearance of the croissants. They had that limp, pale look of supermarket croissants. My friend decided it was too risky, and he passed on getting one. If only I had been as wise. Perhaps drunk on memories, or maybe just in denial, I ordered an almond croissant. It was terrible. Exactly as limp as it looked, there was no flaky ness or crunch. The filling was flavourless. This is the worst almond croissant I’ve had in years. How the mighty have fallen. I pray this was only a one off fluke, but my experience was bad enough I’m scared to try one again. The venue is still an absolutely wonderful space, and they do a great coffee. Maybe I just got unlucky? Maybe they will recover? I really hope so. I would love for Brickfields to regain and retain its status as the premiere almond croissant in town.

One of the best bakeries in Sydney, serving up fresh baked goods every morning. Their hot cross bun was quite nice, very fresh and full of flavour. Service is always very friendly and warm Highly recommend their mushroom melt sandwich

Small and cosy bakery at Chippendale. We ordered takeaway an Almond Croissant (delicious however slightly burnt), Chocolate Croissant (wish it had more chocolate) and Chocolate cake with Kaya (moist and not too sweet which is great). Was going to order a coffee but they don't serve almond milk. Overall ok.

First time visitor and sadly my last. Ordered a chocolate croissant, took one bite and had to ask the staff for another one as I assumed it was about 1 week old. Took a bite with the fresh one and again was at least 3-5 days old. Baked fresh daily they say, highly unlikely. Would not return, save your money, goto Coles and grab yourself a clearance croissant, would be fresher and definitely cheaper!!

A super nice bakery/cafe hidden in Redfern that serves up a great cup of Mecca coffee! The barista was very nice and accommodating. I have yet to try their baked goods but their sourdough is great!

In Short: Brickfields is no-nonsense bakery-cafe that just focuses on top shelf baked breads and pastries with a menu that is packed with flavours. Stop by for a coffee, a loaf of sourdough, a sweet treat, or a croissant with provolone cheese and ham. In the days before Central Park, Chippendale had a few cafes that provided for the locals and one of them stood out for the lines that stretched out the front door and diners spilling onto the path. That bakery-cum-cafe is Brickfields. Renowned for their amazing loaves of breads, and delightful and beautifully crafted pastries, their food menu is an always evolving and is backed up by well made coffee. Brickfields doesn’t subscribe to Instagram worthy fitouts, no neon signage, plush pink banquettes. It’s functional and utilitarian, it’s the delicious food that does the talking.

This cafe is known for their bakeries. Half of its space is devoted to ovens and other machines.

[Custard date tart] $6.5
Very nice. neither too sweet or too plain.

[Crab salad] $19
The crab is smashed. I don’t really like it.

The coffee looks pretty nice. They did very awesome latte art.
Croissant Addict
Great croissant and chai brew. Nice little cafe to chill, beautiful layout. Service was efficient and staff were friendly.

This place is petty cool with friendly service. Traditional bakery which I love about with a hint of trendy Asian fusion everywhere on the menu, however, personally I still prefer the classic ones. So far the almond croissant comes second comparing to Miam’s, Croissant comes second comparing to Victories’ or Labancz, Sesame cookie didn’t impress me, mushroom melt sandwich reminds me croque monsieur but not quite yet. The custard date tart, frangipane tart are truely devine! Possibly the best amongst all, even better than Lorraine’s. Sourdough bread is crewy yummy which explains the crush of crowds. I will be rotating between this one, flour & stone and brouke Street. They all have their speciality attracting me. Thank you for nice food and service!
Latte Queen
This charming patisserie has a great range of pastries, quiches, and other snacks! I had a fruit danish and it was delicious. The coffee was excellent too. I hope to be back soon!

Great little cafe with delicious fresh baked goods and an extensive menu. Staff are very friendly and the baristas can make some awesome coffee! The dishes we had were flavoursome and well presented, will definitely be back for more. Keep up the great work guys and girls.

Some really tasty breads here but the croissant was a bit dense - they might have gone overboard on the butter and lost flakiness in the process.
Sydney Food Lover
Known for their baked goods, this is a cafe that’s a must visit for anyone that’s a fan of good sourdough bread and classic croissants.
The croissants feature the signature honeycomb of layers that you look for in a well risen French pastry
I tried the mushroom and cheese toasty on the signature brickfields sourdough, as far as toasted sandwiches go, it was one incredible tasty one.
Guorium🧪
A bakery themed cafe. They specialize in the baked goodies of all sorts. Pretty cozy on a Easter Sunday morning. I enjoyed their “a bit of everything” which is plenty of food for two to share! Very wholesome and healthy ingredients! Xihuahua 🐶 reckons the sour cream got a hint of cheese.🧐 Coffee was beautiful too with macadamia milk!
Cowgirlinthesand
Great place, go here a lot, great food, vibe and staff normally. However the blonde waiter (dude) who wants to correct or criticise my and the next two tables, an observation; part of your job is to reply in a neutral manner to apparently stupid questions or requests. Lose the attitude
Boliver Lee
Not sure what the hype is about this place, I get that the bread is fresh and artesian but it doesn’t justify 16 dollars for cheese and mushroom on toast. 5.50 for an add on boiled egg with chives....

Go home Sydney cafe, you’re drunk.
Bottomlesspit
I had been wanting to come here for a while because it is always so busy on the weekends! Finally made it. I had a turmeric latte and the muesli and fruit. The latte was delish, quite sweet so I’m not sure if there was lots of sugar in it. The muesli was nice, nothing to write home about. I would have loved to try one of their sandwiches, which looked delicious but I just wasn’t feeling like one because it was too early for me. The staff were really lovely. The prices were a bit too high, which is a bummer.

Brickfields used to be my local bakery when I lived in Chippendale. There is always a small gathering of people outside, lured by the artisanal bread and the small but delectable pastries selection. I came here for lunch today, as I was just passing through. I ordered a simple bacon sandwich that seriously hit the spot and more. Along with it came all the great memories are living in this vibrant neighbourhood, thank you for that mid afternoon nostalgia.

We were a group of 6 people and came in on a Sunday morning. Menu is short and very simple. Seating is mostly outside. There were two heaters but one did not work so it was a bit chilly. Our orders took a long time to come out and then we were told that the order wasn't printed so our order was being made "right now". Our food came about 20 mins later which is quite a while for a sandwich. Sandwich was okay. The bread was quite hard. One of us ordered avocado and it was the most generous portion of avocado I have ever seen! It was two avocado halves! A whole avocado! That was great. When we went to pay, the lady at the register was super unfriendly and almost threw the brownie we had bought as take away at us.

I think this place is probably fine for take-away but I didn't enjoy my eat-in experience.
Xihuahua 🐶
2.5/5 Decor and ambience

Suitable for take-away but not having there. The narrow table and the rotatable chairs are really uncomfortable 😣, and it is quite noisy and busy inside... constantly with crashes from equipments, machines...

3/5 Service

Oh.... ewww.... they are quite rush for asking us to order. So, not really pleased ~~~~

3/5 Menu

4/5 Sourdough with a bit of everything
Standard, normal, fresh ingredients and nothing abnormal sourdough... so 4 marks out of 5
1/5 Turkish eggplants 🍆
😂 this dish is going to be off my menus forever! Super oily... it’s totally not my type and quite cold and salty inside and oily is everywhere...(personally feel a little bit scary to have such fattening vegetables in the morning). But, it seems that the ingredients are quite fresh....

Eww... the overall experience fails to match up with the expectations. 😶😶
E

I really like their iced latte! It is nicely roasted and light, a perfect company for any hot day! I tried their almond croissant and the signature sourdough toast with bacon and butter. They are decent, especially the taste of their sourdough toast. It lives up to its name. I really hope they would have more kinds of foods in their menu though.

Brickfields is a quaint little cafe right along Cleveland street.

***

Service:
Friendly staff! Someone will immediately have you seated & take your order upon entering the cafe.

Food:
I had their bacon sandwich. While the serving was large, the greens were overwhelming and the sandwich was quite difficult to eat.

Location:
It’s quite close to the Redfern station.

***

Though the ambiance of the place was cosy & the service was great, I was not blown away by the food. Perhaps I’ll try the sweets the next time I’m in the area.

Fantastic little bakery/cafe located in Chippendale. Whenever I pass Brickfields on a weekend, there is always a crowd of people waiting for a seat, so we decided to visit early on a Saturday morning and were seated straight away.

We thought that being a bakery, we ought to try our their bread so ordered two sandwiches - the bacon sandwich with manchego, pickles, mayo and greens + the beef brisket sandwich with cabbage salad, hot sauce and anchovy mayo.

First things first, these sandwiches are BIG with very generous fillings. The bacon sandwich was delicious, however, I thought the manchego was a little overpowering. The tartness of the pickles along with the mayo and greens worked quite well to balance it out the saltiness of the bacon + cheese.

My favourite of the two was definitely the brisket sandwich. The meat was delicious and tender for the most part, however, was dry in some spots. Paired with the cabbage, hot sauce and anchovy mayo the flavours were absolutely heavenly!

We also couldn't leave without a loaf of fresh bread to take home. We chose a small rye and caraway loaf which was AMAZING with a beautiful aroma. Staff were also very friendly and helpful in explaining the menu/making recommendations.

Highly recommended!

An awesome bakery in Chippendale with amazing bakery goods and breads. You can also eat meals in. We shared a nourishing healthy bowl as well as a savoury scone which was delicious. It was a super hot day so we also tried a filtered coffee with milk and an iced coffee. Both were very good. Staff were also extremely nice!

I live about 2 blocks away from this place, been 4 or 5 times. Every single time I go in is only a frustrating experience - staff are useless.
Melissa
Friendly staff but didn’t enjoy the food and all- the potato and leek salad was too wet and extremely pickled. The beef rump was chewy and hard to swallow. Juice appeared to be watered down. Won’t be coming back.

The bread is great ang it’s a friendly crew if you decide to sit in and enjoy some breakfast or lunch etc. They are famous for their Bacon sandwich and it is well worth a try.

Fabulous bread, must try!
But I have lately been disappointed by the friendliness, or lack thereof, which has now become arrogance. Let me elaborate: I made it at 3pm just a couple of minutes before closure the other day, hoping to still find some bread, which I did, there were still a dozen of loaves which I am sure were going to end up in the bin ... but then the girl said to me that they had a 10% surcharge because of public holiday... you must be kidding me, a service surcharge on a loaf of bread off the shelf 2 minutes before closure???
Thanks but no thanks, that's one less regular customer... I will stick to Iggy's then!
Kerri
Came here to try 2 things- peanut butter caramel cookie and black sesame cookie. Unfortunately didn't see the peanut butter one but tried and enjoyed black sesame. Soft and chewy. Got the sesame taste coming through and lots of coconut too. On the sweet side for me so shared with a friend even though it wasn't big. Also got buckwheat wholemeal bread to take home. Very good bread. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Will come back to try other options.

Brickfields is a charming bakery I frequent often.

Each bite into their beautifully made croissants (plain, pain au chocolat, and ham & cheese) sends me into a buttery euphoria. The pastries and cakes here (carrot cake, orange and semolina cake, persian love cake, kaya cake, white chocolate almond brownies and crème brûlée tart) are heavenly, with my personal favourite being the orange and semolina cake.

However, please do not bother with their savouries. All the sandwiches I've tried (in particular the kale and bacon one), although generous in portion have been absolute disasters. And their hot chocolate and chai latte aren't great either.

Still, I find myself coming back at least once every fortnight to indulge in their pastries.

Came to Sydney and was craving a good brunch spot to just chill and enjoy a cup of coffee and a meal. Brickfields definitely ticked all the boxes for me. Amazing service. Staff were absolutely friendly and food was delicious!

Been waiting so long to try Brickfields that I overdid it & bought home 7 different things! Not all of Sydney great cake shops have savouries to rave about, maybe an occasional sausage roll. Brickfields stands out here - yesterday they had Savoury Galettes - crisply puff pastry topped with sweet potato & goats cheese, or a whole pile of thinly slices zucchini over feta, YUM were as good as they looked!

Plus their Savoury Sesame Scones with Chilli & Olive are serious- black & white sesame, whole olives, & a real bite from the chilli, delicious at home with butter - these weren't your tame savoury scones that you get in other places. Quiche was nice too.

Their sweet things are great too - tried orange/semolina cake, frangipane tart, chewy black sesame / coconut cookie, & custard/date tarts which have rich custard with a layer of date paste. All the tart pastry is excellent, firm & crisp.

Only disappointment was the piccolo coffee had a very slightly unpleasant acidic flavour - people, how can you serve some of Sydney's best pastries & cakes with substandard coffee?! But never mind, for me this will now be a drive past & load up place, every single item I'd eagerly buy & eat again!

I was getting bored with the breakfast choice around my office so decided to get off one stop earlier at Redfern to walk to Brickfields bakery as Broadsheet voted them as having one of the best croissant in Sydney! Contemplated having my breakfast there but decided against it as it was a long trek back to the office.

Took away the a plain croissant, black sesame Cookie and a strawberry tart. The croissant tasted really good, soft and fluffy on the inside crunchy on the outside. Yum! Not a big fan of the other two desserts though, the black sesame cookie was too sweet and the strawberry tart also had an additional sweetness to it which was not to my taste. Having said that though will be back to try the other pastries as there is a huge variety there!

Every thing there was awful. The service was bad, they gave us a wrong order and when i kindly told the girl there, we didnt order this, sge gave us an attitude.
food and coffee were cold as well.

Friendly service, amazing coffee. Enjoyed the Bacon sandwich and Ham/Cheese croissant. Fruit tart is a must! Place is small so had to wait a little for a seat - but definitely worth the wait!

Brickfields is a popular bakery in Chippendale which is known for its bread and pastries. The simple cafe features a high ceiling and glass counter where the baked pastries and cakes are paraded.

I would have rated Brickfields a credible 3.0 or 3.5 if I had not bothered to try their breakfast bowl for the day. Their pastries and cakes, the Malaysian Kaya cake and croissants, were flavoursome and delectable but the breakfast bowl was simply terrible and resembled a tasteless, hospital meal. The corn, peas and sesame etc were dry and seemingly unrelated and it was not a surprise that most of the diners could not finish them. Perhaps they should just keep to selling cakes and pastries and nothing else.
DM
Visited Brickfields this morning to be told there were no brownies, sad for us, though not a complaint worthy problem. We next asked for a slice of the flourless chocolate cake - the attendant politely proceeded to serve us, though was interrupted by another server who told him it was not on offer to us, as the cake had not yet been cut - again not a problem. We ordered a coffee and waited patiently, before a server impolitely asked us to wait outside for our order (despite the light rain that was building momentum outside). We waited patiently, though there remained patrons inside the cafe, waiting for their coffees - they had presumably not been asked to wait outside, or had perhaps ignored the ludicrous request. After ten minutes, we asked the same server if our order had been prepared, however she drily told us that orders that had been submitted before ours were still being completed - funny, given the fact that we had watched three sets of customers who had been served after us, take their drinks and subsequently leave. We re-entered the cafe, much to the dismay of the server, who proceeded to stare at us. We asked the barista about the status of our coffee and were told it had already been dispensed, conveniently to two patrons who arrived 10 minutes after us, and were located in the exact spot we had been asked to vacate. We asked for our coffee to be remade, and were told it would be delivered shortly. I've done the hospo circuit, so I'm well aware mistakes happen. But no guest should ever be marginalised, (let alone regular guests...) and sent to wait outside while others are permitted to stay inside. If this is the case, at least attempt a smile, or some version of courtesy rather than treating your guests as though they have asked for the key to the city. We eventually received our order, though instead of remorse it was delivered with an eye roll and and hostility. Thanks Guys, Namaste.

The best coffee, croissants and jam I've had in Sydney. The music can be a little loud in the mornings. Dress in shorts and a tank top if passing by in summer, as the onsite bakery can make the seating area hot hot hot.

Why haven't we found this place sooner? Do yourself a favor and brunch here.

What makes this place exceptional is the sweets. You know this is their specialist when the pastry and cake spread is strategically placed right in your face as soon as you enter. Even while you're ordering takeaway you can't help but be rude and not look at the staff. The spicy mud cake is one of the most moist and rich (without being overpowering) I've had and the pastry here for their tarts and danish is incredible.

Of course the savory food and coffee is simple yet tasty and healthy.
Will
What can I say - the chocolate and almond brownie was unbelievably good, so rich and moist - not too sweet and a nice mix of textures with the crunchy almonds.
Flat white was well executed too. A nice break for the rubbish I get at work!

If you love pastries, bread & cakes then Brickfields Bakery is your heaven! They have never disappointed me on any of their goods. Their croissants are the best I've had in Sydney & I love the fact that every time I go there, there's always a new treat I haven't tried yet. I must say that I do go at least every 2 to 3 weeks. There is always a queue but it goes quite fast & service is always great! Food is delicious too, full of flavour, if you are after a quick bite/brunch. #saksrecommends

having gone back to this numerous times, and that they now have eftpos, this is one of sydney's best patisseries. 5 stars. Good lunch eats and amazing cake bites. Get the black sesame cookies. essential

Got a cheeky tip off about this place and had to see for myself. The breakfast was five star, so was the service and the baked goods!!! Looking forward to sharing this gem with friends.

The display of the bread at the window pane was so inviting. Bought a loaf of fig & walnut. I tore off a chunk and dug into it (because they wouldn't slice it for me.) Fresh and crusty but lacks the flavour i was hoping for. It was just mostly fruits. Occasionally i would taste the fig. Don't know where "is" the walnut.
Carstos
Overrated and overpriced. Bakery food was overbaked and dry. Particularly a almond crossaint which was inedible. We are regularly fine around city and I cant understand how this place is popular.
Eatwithmyfoodsafari
Nestled on a leafy corner on Cleveland Street, Chippendale, Brickfields cafe/bakery does a roaring trade selling handcrafted breads, cakes and pastries.

It's the place you wish you had on your neighbourhood street corner.

The cafe is small and if you're lucky enough to nab a window seat, you could very pleasantly while away the morning watching the steady procession of happy customers through its doors.

You'll be happy too if you have their raspberry ripple donut.
Pollo_pesce_me
My friend who live in the area mentioned this place makes the best croissant. unfortunately it was not available so we ordered a slice of raspberry and white chocolate cake, apple danish and a ginger bread. I loved the cake; it was not overly sweet and texture was perfectly moist - I am guessing it's made with almond meal but not 100% sure - whatever it is it was very nice! The apple danish was beautifully crunch and buttery - so good! I also liked my gingerbread man.
Ordered flat white - coffee was bit of let down. I found the beans not so amazing; has that acidic after taste. Nonetheless great cafe with fantastic pastries!
Sarah Gillis
The quiches are to die for, flaky and buttery pastry and the softest egg filling. The bacon sandwich is another standout although I've yet to have anything here I didn't enjoy. Decent coffee as well. Can be hard to get a seat and sometimes the favourites sell out early.
Grace36
Ok, this would have to be one of my favourite spots for coffee in Chippendale. There are a lot of cafes coming up in this area, and while they are very cool and great for food, Brickfields without a doubt is one of my favourite cafes for coffee in the area. Also, I highly recommend trying their Persian Love Cake!
Suzy Of Sydney
This is probably my favourite treat place in Sydney. I love visiting Brickfields for coffee (a divine long black) and a cake or pastry. The blueberry cake is to die for, as is the pear and almond tart. It's a perfect place to go alone with a book and perch up in front of the barista. I've tried the cheese and pickle sandwich too, which was perfect. I cannot fault this place (except maybe the noisy Cleveland St traffic...)
Oksolike
Brickfields is quickly becoming Sydney's best spot to get your bread. Their delicious bread rolls and olive loaf are top notch!

Try their breads, their coffee and cakes because they are all great!

Always great service with cool young friendly staff who go the extra mile.
Samanthawxlow
Brickfields has one of the best sourdoughs in Sydney, hands down. I first had their bread at another cafe but was so enamoured by it I actually followed it all the way to the source. It's a shame that their menu is so limited and frankly quite basic. But it's the perfect place to pick up a loaf on the weekend to last you the rest of the week.
Ningjaeats
The food is absolutely amazing here!! Their freshly baked sourdough bread is absolutely divine plus all the extra flavours they add to complement. A simple bacon sandwich had me drooling so I knew I had to go back for more. They've never disappointed plus you can't avoid picking up a few cakes on your way out!

Best buttery croissant in Sydney, lovely cafe .The staff is friendly and welcoming.
The coffe not so strong , i wish they had more seating inside .
Nice place!

Poor service and attitude! After searching online I found this place and made a plan to try it while visiting Sydney. There were two women standing across the doorway talking so I asked if they were waiting to be seated. One of them said "no, no, go in. Sit anywhere you like", it transpired she was a serveuse, so we did.

We sat and we waited and waited and waited. We tried to see the menu and catch the eye of any staff but they totally ignored us. The worker by the door was in deep conversation. After about 6 minutes of sitting there like muppets I started to get annoyed. Then two people entered and were both greeted and asked if they had ordered. That did it for me so we left. Disappointed and crabby.

This is the best baked bread in Sydney.

I don't live anywhere near Chippendale; Southern Sydney. I go out of my way to get there or the Orange Grove School markets on a Saturday to purchase vast quantities of their sourdough. It's simply divine. And it lasts way longer than any other type of bread i've purchased. It doesn't go mouldy and retains it's fine flavour. Lasting longer means it gets a little crusty but we just toast it up and it's fine. I've tried the other bread flavours like rye and caraway and fig and walnut and their croissants (to die for). I've not been able to eat in the cafe as it's always busy and packed. I just settle for my bread order and maybe a cake to go.

Eating this bread makes me very happy. :)

Pastry and bread is so delicious! The mango and coconut tart was superb! It seems like this place is always busy and the staff aren't overly attentive. In terms of food it's fresh and delicious.

While at the delicious Sweetfest we dropped in to the Brickfields stall. Brickfields is a bakery, cafe and wholesaler in Chippendale that's become a part of the community there. It was great to see their goodies on display at Sweetfest - and once seen it was hard not to grab a few essentials there!. The biggest challenge was what to choose - they all looked so good!

Brickfields is another hidden gem in Chippendale area... The aroma of freshly baked goods will tickle your nose as soon as you enter this cosy bakery and cafe.. Go for their Ham and Cheese Croissant if you feel like something savoury to start with.. Otherwise you can opt for their Almond Croissant.. It's light and flaky with generous amount of flaked almonds on top.. Be sure to come early if you don't want to miss out their baked goods!

I know everyone (and I seriously mean everyone) loves brickfields. But I'm sorry, I just don't. Have given them two chances so far. The first time, they forgot my order so it was a long time in coming, the toast I ordered was just ok, and the coffee was just so so. Odd as I like Mecca. Perhaps their houseblend doesn't agree with me. The second time, the sandwich was nice but still not fabulous and my coffee showed up in a dirty cup (yes I told them). I do like brickfields bread but the cafe just doesn't do it for me.

Croissants are passable, but I've had better coffee at 7-11..
I consider it a good thing to have to look up the names of food on a menu and for three items in both of the amazing ‘plates’ at Brickfields for lunch on Sunday, I did. My plate of kisir (a Turkish side dish with bulgur, parsley and tomato paste) was surrounded by some sour skordalia (a greek puree), some beautiful roasted carrots, deep purple not orange, and a generous handful of fresh herbs. Such a pretty dish, so tasty and unusual.

Despite being set in a particularly charmless section of Cleveland St, Brickfields is a bakery with a great to go menu and a few tables and counter seats should you wish to eat in. In fact, it is actually quite charming, with an enchanting array of baked treats and lots of chock full of goodness breads. This is a welcome addition to Sydney's flourishing artisan bakery scene.
Georgia
A charming cafe/bakery with a mix of classic and inventive baked goods. It was the decor that caught my eye while walking past - the light-filled corner shop front, industrial wooden furnishings and buzzy vibe make this place stand out on an otherwise run down section of Cleveland St. I especially like the fact that you can see the baking room from the side of the street. I have eaten in a few times and have been impressed with both the sweet and savoury offerings. The persian rosewater pistachio cake is a personal favourite - dense and strongly flavoured.

There's a small but varied range of gourmet sandwiches for lunch. The one with bacon, rosemary, mayo, manchego and greens is pictured below and was absolutely delicious, probably the best BLT-esque sandwich I've ever eaten - the bacon is crispy, the seeded bun is toasted perfectly, the shredded kale and cabbage add a good amount of crunch (and vitamins).

Have only tried the coffee once but it was quite nice. Service has always been prompt, but I've never been there at a particularly busy time. Be aware that there isn't a huge amount of seating, especially for groups, so on weekends or other busy times you may have to take away instead.
For me Brickfields is the epitome of everything a café should be. Its menu is dynamic, innovative, and regularly updated. The ingredients are seasonal, fresh, and absolutely delicious. The service is very quick and the overall experience is lovely. This is my favourite café in Sydney. I have eaten here a million times and recommend it to all my friends. Love, love, love it.

A new artisan bakery which is also now a well known cafe is open in Chippendale. It's busy but that doesn't mean you have to wait long, we were attended to and seated very quickly. The coffee was nice ( I had a long black). The food is just delicious, the sage and goats cheese cheese tart was really soft and the pastry was crispy without being too burnt. The side of lentils and sprouts was really fresh. They also sell very famous artisan sourdough bread here, so I picked up a lot of soy and linseed sourdough on the way and everything is reasonably priced!

Great little place at Chippendale for just toast and coffee when you don't have time to sit for a long lunch. Sourdough Slightly over toasted today. Great mecca coffee.

Toast your tummies with the warm and freshly baked sourdough bread! Mince into chorizo and chopped peppers with hommus which is full of flavour literally oozing in your mouth and leaving you quite full. Grill with the bacon sandwich again on fresh sourdough and soooo juicy. Don’t forget to glaze with one of their amazing pastries before you go such as the Persian love cake, a dense and sweet almond/pistachio cake, that you will love.

We live in New Zealand and come over to sydney every 6 months or so. No matter what the occasion we have a ritual pilgrimage to four or five food destinations, one of them is Brickfields. A kilometre away theres some fantastic new architecture, but Brickfields is sited on a busy street on the corner of another that (to an outsider, and undoubtedly wrong) seems a bit dodge. We went at first because we read it was supposed to be good, and walked from the CBD. We were not disappointed. Yes the service can be pretty surly, the girl behind the counter had no comprehension that we'd walked quite a few kilometres to stand in front of her. But, despite her problems at home, it was worth it. Our pilgrimage now primarily involves a single specimen - the Persian Love Cake. A delectable middle eastern sweetmeat that is to die for. Bread - brilliant: Breakfast plates - always nice: Coffee - great.
This is one of Sydney's good food spots, there are many I know, but this ones up there and worth crossing a few suburbs for.

Close to the White Rabbit Art Gallery, behind Central Park, on Cleveland Street is Brickfields, a cafe & bakery where they make our favourite sourdough bread. Whenever we find ourselves in the neighbourhood we pass to buy a loaf of Sourdough (normal $6 big one $9), sometimes we’re lucky and the bread is still warm, but of course then we have to try the bread immediately and it happens that most of the bread is gone before we’re actually home. That’s how good it is.

As it’s a cafe you can sit down, inside or outside and have something yummy from the menu or something naughty and sweet.

A charming little cafe-slash-bakery that serves the most flavoursome pastries and catches ample sunlight. A short five minute walk away from Redfern station (it took me about 30 but that’s because I’m an idiot and got lost – who gets lost on Cleveland St?!). Each meal consists only of five components or less, but there’s really no need for more. I had the mushroom melt with truffled mayo and pickled jalapeño. Yum. It’s pretty unusual for me to order something without meat, but a few bites into this and I shut my mouth. The only negative is that there’s not too much to choose from. Oh and if you dislike bread then this place probably isn’t for you. This entry was posted in Food , Lifestyle . Bookmark the permalink . Brickfields feels like a ‘tricked up’ version of Bourke St Bakery which offers atypical baked goods and sandwiches. Despite the small-ish menu, a rotating line up of baked goods helps to maintain its repeat-visit value and I’ve yet to be disappointed with what I’ve tried to date. Only downside is the limited on-site seating so get there early if you’re intending on bringing a party of three or greater...

The Chronicles Of Hilda
Thank the heavens for Brickfields! This all in one bakery cafe opened up in early 2013 and in absolutely no time gathered a cult following. Nestled neatly on Cleveland St near Abercrombie St, the long open windows of Brickfields lets curious passer-bys like myself a sneaky look at the glorious mountain of freshly baked bread. For weeks and months I was one of those passer-bys frothing at the mouth over the sight of fresh bread. I personally love that you can actually see into the bakery because frankly that's where all the action happens. Unsurprisingly, I started the meal with a coffee. I visited on a weekday so the cafe was relatively quiet bar obvious regulars scattered among the limited outdoor seating. Brickfields is definitely bustling on the weekend and most items tend to sell out quickly so I'd recommend visiting early. Chorizo, mayo, spiced cabbage and chilli sandwich $13 Chorizo is always such a crowd pleaser, mixed with the spicy cabbage slaw and pickles and you have probably the best sandwich I've ever eaten. The price is definitely steep at $13 so it's not an everyday lunch option but it's a wonderful splurge when you're having a rough day and need some delicious food to make you feel better. I hope my level of joy extracted from delicious food doesn't make me strange! But even if it does, I'll gladly indulge my delicious food desires. Ham and cheese croissant $5.50 A good quality croissant is such a simple pleasure in life. I fantasise about the day I will be nibbling a croissant at a cafe in Paris but until then I'll have to scour the bakeries in Sydney for the best croissant. Brickfield's croissant is pretty damn good with the additional of streaky ham and cheese to make it more appropriate for lunch. Chocolate tart A chocolate tart is so effortlessly classic. Done well, a chocolate tart can knock your socks off and haunt your dreams until your next fix. This was one of those tarts. A complex mix of sweet, bitter, rich and dense. It's definitely not

There are some light meals that can be ordered here, but the baked goods seems to be the main draw card. Aside from their well-known sourdough loaves, Brickfields also do a small range of treats like croissants, brownies, tarts and quiches. The croissants have a perfectly crisp and flakey shell with delicious layers of buttery goodness; but to my disappointment, there were no almond croissants. I also tried the custard tart which had a nice flakey case and a delicious blend of spices to accompany the egg custard- great for those who want something sweet...

This is another place to get good coffee (they use Mecca Expresso), but the standout was their toasted sandwiches on sourdough. Although it was a little on the pricy end ($16), it is worth a try as it’s something different and tasty. I ordered for lunch the toasted sourdough, which seems to have some Middle Eastern influence, with soft boil egg, hommus, tomato and suquk (I think this is the chorizo like sausage) on sourdough. Maybe I was just feeling a bit peckish after a long morning's bike ride around Sydney, but the combination of these ingredients with freshly baked bread truly was delicious.

For a morning brunch just a short walk away from the newly opened Central Park, Brickfields is a great choice, especially if you love sourdough bread! The menu range is quite limited, since the bakery only makes a handful of different varieties of breads that are then used in each of the dishes. I had wanted to try the avocado and chorizo option that I saw online, which looked delicious, but sadly, it wasn’t to be, as they had taken it off the menu. However, there were still a couple of dishes that looked amazing, so my friend and I shared the soft boiled egg, hommus, tomato, chorizo and sourdough bread, and the fig and walnut sourdough bread with house-made ricotta and honey.

A Food Fable
Brickfields is part bakery part cafe joint. Most of the building is actually a big bakery area and there were plenty of people lining up to pick up their breads, brekkies and coffees. They sell their breads both for retail and wholesale. There’s not actually much dining area...
Just Food No Words
I’ve been here a couple of times over the past few months and although it regularly changes, I always wish the menu was a bit more extensive – the menu is small. It’s more of a bakery with a small complementing cafe business on the side. Getting straight to the point, the food is quite tasty but I found the portions to be quite small and somewhat unsatisfying for the price however their custard date tart had me coming back. It’s amazingly light and at least for that, I think it’s worth a visit for :)

My wish list for brunch is so long and forever growing so you might think that it’d be an easy task when the bestie asked me where I wanted to go for brunch on the weekend. But the truth is, there are so many places to try yet not enough time so I had to do my research before I make any suggestions. My bestie loves baked goods as much as I do so I thought Brickfields would be the perfect brunch spot for us (and her boyfriend because more people means more food). I did do my research and I was aware that it would be a small space but service was a bit of a miss. We followed everybody else and queued up to order to which the wait staff asked if we wanted it for takeaway. We actually wanted to eat in so we asked if that was possible, and we were told to sit and wait at one of the benches outside. There were no problems with eating our canele, Persian love cake and brownie while sitting/standing around the bench. The canele had a crunchy

I was already so excited as I was about to take my first bite. All the factors that caused my excitement: my hunger, my love for bread, the aesthetic appeal for this homemade goodness! And at the first moment I took the bite, my great expectations for this dish did certainly deliver. I am not a big fan of jam which you buy from the supermarket, but gorgeous homemade jam, I could never say no to. Never.

Brickfields looks like a Swedish outhouse stocked for a harsh winter by a pastry loving OCD sufferer. There are sacks of sugar, wheat and giant canolive oil cans (sounds cheap), surrounded by logs of perfectly vanished wood and fastidiously lined baked goods. The seats swing from the wall and swivel around like a children’s theme park ride. There’s glass everywhere so if you like baking, voyeurism and free education, here’s your ticket to baking excellence.

Brickfield's has really good sandwiches. On our first visit there months ago, the hubby and I had their hyped beef brisket sandwich and we were both blown away by how good it was. No difference this time around with the chicken sandwich, which was jam packed with succulent slices of chicken and fresh vegetables.

I don’t think I’ve had one meal at home this week… seriously of the possible 15, two have been made at home. So here are a few places I gorged at this week and thoroughly enjoyed doing so in the process! Detour This place is the bomb diggity (I’m bringing it back). It is the ONLY place the entire office gets coffee and considering the abundance of options in the area that’s impressive. What I find more impressive and very frugal friendly is they do this cute little half serve of avocado on toast (pictured above) for $3.50. It’s been my staple breakfast for a while now… and considering how expensive actual avocados are I think I’m winning. Phamish This restaurant had some hype, lemme tell you, everyone’s crying over missing out on some supposedly amazing duck and prawn pancakes… Well, in yo’ face! Because I totally had a nanna dinner and got to try them before they sold out. They are heavenly, the crunchy omelette, the duck, there really isn’t much I didn’t like about these pancakes. Al

... it’s one of the creamiest and richest coffees I’ve had in a long time. This sets us up well for the arrival of our matching breakfast plates ($12). Although my eyes wander over the short chalkboard menu, settling briefly on the granola and on the interesting concoction of quinoa/seeds/nuts (both $10 and served with milk), I know in my heart that the breakfast plate and I are destined for

Brickfields is one of the Carmody Smith designed venues and located in no mans land on the chippendale side of things; so you kind of have to go look for it if you want to grab a bite here. Wandering through the burbs, we landed here and its a smartly finished stylish and great looking cafe with some quirks. The main space here is about 4.5-5 metres tall and it looks nice. Venue on the inside has counter seating and triangulated tiles. The space is tall and they diminished its scale with the low lights and green. Its a nice airy spot and not too sunny Nice looking cabinet display here. The little touch on the table is nice, the triangles on the table draw from the tiled detail inside. Quirk. They have no large cups so you get this. No nice looking photo of coffee for you! Don’t let @ Black Star Pastries staff see you with these seated outside as they have a great zero waste policy. All these cups, are going in the landfill. Boo. Also of note the 2 strong coffees, between orders the pri

The pastry section of the counter consisted of four sweet treats. KJ and I decided to share the poppyseed and polenta cake. It was delicious, and being wheat free eliminated that after bloating feeling! The cake was liberally seasoned with poppyseeds and extremely moist with a nice tang!

Overall, it’s a café well worth the excursion of your looking for an inner west café run (close to café Gulia if you’re looking for a good double). The coffee is wonderful, food far too tempting and to be frank irresistible and atmosphere very cool.
The Sneaky Pigeon
A contradictory cookie: Rosemary, oat, apricot and white chocolate - BOOM! The combination of savory herb with sweet apricot and white chocolate, worked wonders. Chewy, crumbly, sweet and salty.

...ordered one or two items each and pretty much had a taste of everything. Hazelnut & fig bread This was a wonderfully dense slice, full of gorgeous figs and studded with sweet hazelnuts. Apricot danish So simple, but so delicious. Flaky pastry with a generous filling of the apricot and custard.

Brickfields is a new bakery that’s setting a high standard – their pain au chocolat is light and the chocolate soft with a bitter sweet end.
The Random Foodie
With all the dishes priced at less than $16 (half the dishes on the menu costs less than $10), this was actually cheaper compared to most cafes around the area.
MissPiggyEats
On my next visit I decide to try their vegetarian offering, the white bean sandwich with calvero nero, rocket and salsa agresto ($11.00). Again, not a cheap sandwich but I enjoyed this...a lot. The white bean had been made into a smooth, creamy spread, and the agresto was fantastic - similar to a a pesto with grapes and almonds. What is calvero nero (serious question)? It looks and tastes a lot like spinach and it had been wilted with a good drizzle of oil. Two thumbs up.

I have heard wonderful things about their beef brisket sandwich with radish, anchovy mayonnaise and chili, unfortunately they don’t make that anymore. When asked why? They want to change the menu – spice it up a little. I can’t remember what they replaced it with but I couldn’t go past the egg, eggplant, tahini and zhoug on sourdough – OMG YUM! The bread was deliciously fresh and the zhoug – fantastic! My only gripe would be that it is a small serving, I would happily eat another serving!
The French Wench
In addition to high quality artisan breads, Chippendale bakery Brickfields sells lovely croissants. Their Ham & Cheese croissants seem to be particularly popular. Just get up early if you want to get your hands on them!

I only had eyes for the beef brisket. The beef is slow roasted for six hours and the meat is gloriously soft and fatty with a caramelised char on the edges. If you're a fan of pork belly, this is the beef version. All the richness is neatly offset by slivers of radish, pickle spears and a generous slather of red pepper sauce. The anchovy mayonnaise just adds extra goodness.

Overrated. Heard about the hype, and there wasn't anything bad about the food, but it wasn't worth the hype, especially given the appalling grumpy service. It's a cool hipster looking place, but all the old shirts and beards aren't an excuse to not smile and make your customers feel like they're taking up your precious time. Get a reality check

Rude hipster girl. No stars from me. I seldom complain, but today was an exception. Usually it's all good but I don't want to go back if I get the same attitude. Miserable woman serving. A 40 minute wait for my take away food, and not even an apology when it came. Just a blank stare.

Delicious. Have gone to Brickfields for brunch quite a few times and it's been tasty every time. they have some interesting sassy staff, but the food is great!
King.yasmin
Dissapointing. The bread is good, but the attitude means I won't be back. We asked if it was possible if we could have sourdough toast ( on the menu) and avocado ( on the menu). Response from the rude wannabe hipster girl serving us - no , not no sorry, not I'll ask the manager but just a rude no. Every other cafe we've asked hasn't had a problem, but it wasn't the no it was the attitude that gets me. The croissant with Ham and cheese was cold, and when asked to warm it, that came with attitude as well! And in a small place when owners don't see this and do something about poor attitude in service, they don't deserve my business !
