Review Tago-an Japanese Dining - Sydney

I've come here on several occasions for dinners with friends because the food is always consistently delicious, fresh and of the highest quality. The staff are lovely and friendly too, with attentive service. Definitely will be a continuing repeat customer.

We don’t eat Japanese food very often but this little gem is sooo special. I highly recommend to go early for dinner to enjoy the lovely interior design and the cosy atmosphere. Staff is really nice and food is outstanding. We ordered the wagyu mate and Fuji bento boxes and they were both to die for! Amazing little restaurant and not expensive. We look forward to coming back soon!

Very authentic Japanese food. The tempura, wagyu beef and udon were very good, as all the other food. We liked the sushi very much.

Very delicious food, friendly staff, great restaurant decoration that made me felt like having food in Japan. I will definitely go back again.

Truly enjoyed my meal at Tago-an. Everything was spot on, fresh and well executed. Will definitely be back.

Such an amazing little Japanese restaurant! We loved the agadashi tofu and tuna sashimi.

First visit here and I will be back. Service was good. The Tassie bento box was delicious and satisfying.

We came here for dinner at 7pm on Fri night. We called up last minute to make a booking and they were very kind to give us a table. The bento boxes were amazing!

I was looking for somewhere decent near the wharf theatre as we were seeing the Revue later in the evening and was lucky to find this place. We really enjoyed our dinner. Relative small and cosy inside - we had a reservation (which I recommend doing as seating is limited). Staff were terrific, looked after us well from beginning to end and were very helpful and friendly. The meal was great - we had sashimi, tempura prawns and endamame for starters. My karage chicken curry was so tasty and a large portion too. Very reasonably priced. Got an Izakaya type vibe from this place. We very much enjoyed our pre show dinner and will return here soon.

Staff is quite rude.

My friend and I went there for lunch on a weekday. It was my last day at work before a vacation and I felt like having one beer. Did not realise I would be also shamed in the process by the woman managing the restaurant! She laughed at me and said "oh no one actually orders beer in the afternoon so I just wanted to see who it was and if you enjoyed it at all" and then proceeded to laugh some more.

We were both quite annoyed by the unwarranted rudeness and didn't see how my request was that unusual or needed to be explained at all.

The food was decent; portions are large. But yeah maybe they can work on how they speak to paying customers.

Food here is really good, really fresh and tasty.

I brought the score down due to the fairly high price combined with absolute inflexibility.

I asked if I could swap out one thing in a bento box due to allergy (ie. not just because I felt like it) and they refused point blank. They were not busy at the time and it was not the main feature of the box, they just have a zero changes policy. That means I can either buy things I can't eat, or cut their menu down to about 1/5 dishes.

If it was a budget place or a flat-out service I'd understand; but with the high price, a simple substitution during a quiet lunch service should be fine. If you disagree with that expectation (or simply have no allergies, lucky you) then you'll probably give Tago-an a higher score.

The bento box was nice however they didn't provide rice with it - there are additional charges if you were to order rice. It was quite expensive for their bento box and I expected to see rice included as part of the bento box. This is the first time I had a bento box without the rice and it's actually quite salty. Dessert isn't available for lunch everyday however I ordered the mango pudding and the texture was amazingly light and seriously one of the best I had.

Just had lunch here and what a little surprise this place is. Very authentic Japanese food and brought out super quickly. I had the salmon and avocado salad topped with sesame dressing and it was just scrumptious! So fresh and perfectly filling. The prices are on the higher side but the quality and freshness is worth it. I'll definitely be back.

Just started working in the local area. Dropped in a for a quick lunch break today and I already know I'm going to be visiting a lot more. The Tsukiji Bento box (28.0) was outstanding. I loved every bite! Miso soup was adequately salty and a great way to start the meal. The sashimi and sushi was ultra fresh, the sushi rice nicely seasoned and tender. The tempura prawns were fresh from the fryer, light golden, batter crunchy on the outside and prawn flesh sweet and juicy on the inside. The light golden colour of the batter indicates Tago-an changes the oil in it's fryers often and takes pride in it's Tempura (when you see dark looking Tempura it's because the oil has been overused for frying). The Teriyaki salmon fish fillets were exploding with flavour and judging from the soy and mirin balance, it's not the store-bought stuff which is fantastic. So many restaurants are lazy these days! Not these guys. Service was polite and professional, the food came quick. Ambience was calm making Tago-an a great office getaway. I had a great time and as I said earlier, will definitely be back. Highly recommended.

There's nothing bad to say about the food... good portions, comes quickly, really tasty. However, the staff have NO idea how to treat customers and the service is terrible. They are in no way accommodating or flexible and after giving them the benefit of the doubt on numerous occasions, I've decided that the food does not make up for a shoddy dining experience.

Examples...

One time, they messed up my order by making the wrong thing but then forced the mistake meal onto me.

Another time, the restaurant was empty and they didn't allow a pregnant lady to sit down inside whilst she waited for her food.

There's a really nice Japanese down the road (Nakashima) that cooks just as good food and there service is great! Check them out instead.

This little gem of a place is my favourite, no fuss, authentic Japanese restaurant outside of Japan. From the minute you walk through the doors you are greeted by the always smiling owner you know its going to be a great experience. With her husband in the kitchen too this team know how to deliver delicious food with wonderful service. Walking into the restaurant makes you feel like you are in Japan as most of the decor was sourced directly from there.
After moving on from their previous restaurant in the CBD they have downgraded in size, but upgraded in every other aspect. Working locally I am lucky enough to eat here most weeks for lunch.
All that is left to do now is come in for a long dinner with friends and work my way through their sake list!
Must try: the spicy beef udon, and anything raw!
Special mention: the imported Asahi tastes sooo much better than the stuff you buy from Dan Murphys.
