Review Courthouse Hotel - Sydney

Thais Nabarretti
Where to start... the location is close to both buses and trains. Staff is young and energetic. Easy way to order, either from the counter or straight from your phone. Food is really good and portions are fair. Happy dogs running around. Outdoor and indoors seatings. Great selection of tap beer.. I'm just describing heaven!!!

Great place for a cold drink and love their beer garden. Very chill and relaxing.

Quite possibly my favourite pub in the Inner West, if not the entirety of Sydney. It's the sort of place for any occasion, at any time of day and no matter the mood you're in. Where the staff are friendly, the security are professional and, most importantly, the beers are cold and with a good selection to boot! To me, this is the standard for which every, classic Australian pub should be measured against. A cornerstone of the community and a special place in my heart. Love it!

Great pub in inner city location at Newtown. Had gf options and we ordered gf pulled pork nachos and a medium rare steak +chips/salad. Loved that it's a dog friendly pub and so we had plenty of "helpers" at nearby tables to finish my generous serving of nachos!!

A stunning location, it perfectly covers a true natural environment which makes you feel real comfort and welcome as you endulge on the beautiful nourishment presented to you. It also includes many healthy options, which is simply splendid. The only thing negatively note worthy to comment about are the prices as some dishes and beverages can be a little exaggerated.

Great pub with friendly staff. Also the best place in Sydney to watch not just Sydney Swans, but ALL other AFL and AFLW games with the sound up on their TV’s. I LOVE how they got an artist to recreate the old Scanlen’s VFL footy cards from the 1970’s, then placed these picture frames of old Aussie Rules footballers in their team colours on a space of the wall elevated above the bar ! It’s refreshing to go to a local establishment in Sydney whose owner (Solotel Group), has for the most part maintained the pub’s original historic building and not just simply demolished it to build a new pub building.

Great environment and mostly important family friendly. Our steaks were perfectly cooked. The life music was fantastic! And the staff members really nice. 100% recommended

Staff waited for us to spend money on pokies, machines, food and drinks before kicking us out - for a reason that the security guard couldn’t even explain and it looks like they couldn’t even comprehend themselves. My partner had been there multiple times before without issues but apparently we were “making people uncomfortable” despite minding our own business, being fairly quiet and getting ready to promote the business on social media!!

Friendly staff, fast service- can’t go wrong! Low lit intimate casual setting and atmosphere. A variety of cider and beers on tap, with wine options available too. Definitely a good place to go and chill for hours if you’re into that. Highly recommend 💓

Had the Aussie burger that had a beef patty, lettuce, cheese, beetroot and aioli? There’s a limited burger range of Halloumi, Chicken and the Aussie which I think good because I’m indecisive.<br/><br/>The burger was quite big as you can see in the photo. The bun was crispy and the beef patty was so juicy, omg it was all just amazing. Fries were the perfectly cooked, super crunchy on the outside and moist on the inside.

Well I came for the beer but I have to say would definitely come back for the Nachos.<br/>When I was trying to work out what to order I just looked around and saw what other people were eating - 1 in 2 had the nachos - I just assumed it was the thing to do here. Thankfully I was right.<br/>It looks a mess, but it was fantastic.<br/>

An energetic and vibrant bar with an open courtyard and outdoor sitting, Courthouse Hotel is visibly more popular and exuberant than its nearby counterpart at Carlisle Bistro. My usual place for drinks over the weekend. However, it can get a little too rowdy over Fridays and Saturdays and conversations might be muffled.

Sometimes you just want to go to a pub that still feels like a pub and 'the courty' delivers that feel in abundance, plus more. <br/><br/>Divided into four main sections, there's something for everyone and anyone. The beer garden is big and open with big tables, perfect for big groups, the smoking area is actually big enough to fit the number of people you'd expect to be smoking in a pub, the dining area and balcony are warm and cozy in winter and open airy in summer and he bar area is always buzzing. <br/><br/>One of the best things about the courty is the menu. It's classic pub meals like nachos, burgers, Parma and wedges and they're all good too. <br/><br/>For the full experience, get here early and have an early dinner in the beer garden then head inside and try and get a table near the TVs and watch the Swans beat whoever it is that they're playing. The atmosphere during a game is incredible.

The only, and I mean only reason I am not giving a full 5 stars here is because sometimes I can't find a seat and I get grumpy. <br/><br/>Other than that, if you are looking for a  great atmosphere to take a friend, first date, mother-in-law, or your puppy for a drink, HERE YOU GO.<br/><br/>The Courthouse has a relaxing vibe anyone can get into. Either sit in the pub and soak up the many TVs playing the footy, or step into the outdoor beer garden that in my opinion should be #1 in Sydney. <br/><br/>We always end up here either on a weekend with friends, or after a long day in the office. Nothing beats a beer garden that allows you to bring your dog. <br/><br/>Being someone who doesn't have a dog, I enjoy this because I get to see everyone's pups whilst enjoying my favorite beer. <br/><br/>We have yet to try the food as it looks a wee bit expensive. But, the Courty is our #1 go to bar any day of the week.

Extremely disappointing Sunday lunch. The $25 Sunday Roast was the worst roast I'd ever had in Sydney. The portion size was tiny - the chicken was tiny and curried (!), two scraggly thin roast wedges and a couple of thin pieces of carrot.<br/>My friend has Bangers and mash - the bangers had straggly bits of green stuff (green chillis?) , poor quality and also a meagre portion.<br/>Will be going home to eat again soon.<br/>Only reason it gets 1.5 is for the staff who were friendly.<br/>Won't be rushing back anytime soon.

Popular pub spot in Newtown the Courthouse Hotel is a great place for an afternoon beer. There are plenty of craft beers to choose from but I always go with the local. If it's a nice day grab a seat outside and soak in the atmosphere. The menu has all the pub food options you would expect. If you have coins with you head inside and play some of the retro games including a pinball machine!

The bouncer was brutish. Asked my friend what the rugby score was (he didn't know), and then told him to leave when he said he didn't know. Pretty disappointing night overall.
Angry Chicken
This place has a great vibe if you want to pop out for a beer or bite to eat. Cajun chicken with side of chips went down nicely, chicken wasnt too dry.

Didn't eat here so can't judge the food. Funky ambience out the back in the beer garden but on a Friday night the lines to buy a drink at the bar out the back were loooooong, I'm talking 15 minutes line up to buy a drink (with only one bartender a lot of the time) and cash only.

Good Newtown drinker with plenty of tattooed ladies, bearded young folk, a decent beer garden and a bit of character in the decor. The chalkboard menu is a mix of pub staples and healthier options, in a nod to the eco-conscious residents. So you'll find a chicken schnitz parma sat next to a blackened chicken and kale salad. I ordered the rare kangaroo salad with hazelnuts, beetroot, tomatoes and a mustard dressing. This looked excellent and was lean and tasty. We also had a kids' fish and chips (like most pubs this is a bit tokenistic but bonus points for aioli sauce and some salad) and a plain serve of ice cream ($3). The halloumi burger and chips was good but over-priced. Lastly, the large serve of beef nachos was spectacular in appearance but had hardly any beef on it. For $20 it was a spectacular rip-off with half of it just dry corn chips with nothing on them. The good tended to slightly come out on top of the mediocre.
Two Girls One Fork
This is one of those pubs that has not changed a bit in the last 7 years. It's ye old faithful and reliable. It hasn't upped the prices, swapped out of the beverages for the latest fad or even updated the decor (😜)! You certainly won't be finding any kale on this pub grub menu either. What you will find is classic nachos big enough for 4 along with schnitzels, steaks and all the pub staples. It's not the most amazing food but it's certainly the best after a jug of Carlton! <br/><br/>The beer garden is hands down one of our favourite places to enjoy a Sunday bevvie in the sun. Get on it! 🍻🍻🍻

Good atmosphere terrible food. <br/>I'm not sure if the food was bad because it was busy or not. I ordered their chicken burger and it sounded delightful, when i received it, everything was as cold as a bone. It tasted as though it had been sitting on the pass all night... After consuming it I didn't feel too well all night.

Love the courthouse for all reasons but food! Ordered the vegetarian nachos and was very disappointed. Bad quality everything, especially the plastic cheese which was used. Will only ever return to drink there!

Love this place. It's a character of Newtown that everyone should try. Get there for a nice weekday meal and a pretty busy weekend. It's pretty roomy with a nice courtyard and inside sitting area. Really cool artwork or paintings on the wall with a pinball machine in the room

Good place at Newtown. A bit hidden and never too crowded when am here. Nice for a couple of drinks and some food. Had the wedges here and the Courty burger. Not too bad. Ambience is awesome especially on a sunny day.

The Courthouse Hotel has an awesome vibe. We visited on a lazy (hungover) Sunday afternoon. It’s a great place to chill out, especially in the courtyard area. With a few friends, a few beers and some good food -there’s nothing more you could want in a local.

Rude security staff. Used to love the courthouse... Overzealous security staff ruined our night tonight by deciding to target a member of our party. The rude security guard decided a member of our group was intoxicated, which was not the case at all. Poor judgement and even poorer public relations... Management equally poor in there judgement. <br/>Sad dad to see what once a great pub become another boring suburban pub!

If you’re from the inner-west, enjoy beer, pinball or look like a member of Kings of Leon, you will fit right in here. Home to a huge beer garden, a front bar, rooms filled with vintage furniture (one entirely dedicated to pinball) and some great pub grub! The steaks are great quality for the price, $16 will get you a big bit of beef, chips, perfectly steamed dreams and mushroom sauce. Other items include the stock standard burgers, nachos and chicken parmy, all can be enjoyed while playing bingo, watching crab races or connect four on different nights of the week.

On a sunny day this locals pub is bound to be buzzing in the beer garden. All walks of life come to this watering hole which has a fairly reasonably priced bistro. Jugs of your favourite tap beer will fill 3 schooners and during the week there's special f

Would Not Recommend to Friends. In brief, the food was of poor-to-passable quality and pricey. The service was substandard, with staff seeming that they were too good for you or for the gig. The ambience was almost, if not actually, non-existent; too many people far too fond of the drink and too many people—mostly university students or locals from Newtown, Enfield, or other suburbs or localities in the area—far too fond of themselves, but this may very well work for other people.<br/><br/>Taking everything into account, we would not recommend Courthouse Hotel, Newtown to friends.

Disappointing. Rude staff. Poorly cleaned bathrooms. Cannot believe how uninterested the staff were. Not prepared to assist at all. To be honest, I could serve myself and it would be a more pleasant experience.
Iloveaioli
Not favourite bar for drinks in Newtown but it's my favourite place for Nachos! Definitely they're to share, portion is huge and lots of spicy flavour!! My favourite Nachos in Sydney!!

Not John dory. I asked the kind lady how the John dory with chips was like and replied "beautiful" I proceeded to order with beef nachos, food was ready within 15 mins, when I received my food the fish looked a touch Brown when I took my first bite I was in disgust, burnt fish which didn't taste like John dory, I'm a fisherman of 25 years and have caught my fair share of john dory and would know the taste, this tasted like SHARK MEAT

I've eaten here many times. Didn't really rate it at first until I had the burger - very good - way better than Mary's.

This place sucks. It's full of 'cool' staff who treat you like scum and give you crappy food even though it costs an arm and a leg. I will never come back here... Any pub in Newtown is better than this.
Draughtbeerman
Lettuce is not salad. Come on! Order a meal with 'chips and salad' on the side only to get lettuce with some salt and oil on it?<br/>Lettuce alone is not a salad.
Pretzelinspector
Sighs. If you can handle the wanker ratio here you will be able to purchase some of the most overpriced and sub-par pub food in Sydney. The outdoor area is nice but I had to down many shots to endure the patrons. The staff weren't particularly helpful.

Good meal-sized salads at the bistro!. I was frustrated for so long in my search for healthy lunch options in Enmore/Newtown <br/>"I just want a big salad!!!"<br/><br/>... and VOILA! Now the Courthouse Hotel Bistro has some fabulously good big bowls of salad on the menu. The baby spinach, smoked salmon, ricotta, avocado and quinoa is my fave. Closely followed by the corn, lentil and halloumi salad. Just like I'd make my own lunch to take to work, if I could be bothered to prepare it every morning.<br/><br/>My only gripe lately was with the American waitress at the bistro demanding attention to her tip jar with a written note about her sob story of medical and student debts from back home in the mean old USA, begging for our tips to help her pay it off. Listen up lady - We don't accept being hassled to tip in this country. We pay a living wage instead. You are lucky to be here, you are lucky to have a job that an Australian person is missing out on. So please keep your crappy country's issues out of our faces and don't guilt us into tipping you when we're just trying to order our lunch. It's not cool.

Great pub. This is a really cool spot for a few drinks. They have multiple lounge rooms and a big beer garden. The food was a bit average but it's really more about the atmosphere. Last time we tried to go here we got stopped at the door by the bouncer, who appeared to be so baked that he couldn't understand what we wanted. So we went somewhere else instead which was a bit of a shame.

Great beer garden on a Summer's day. The beer garden here is great - a huge area with an outdoor bar. It does get very busy here , so get in early to secure a table. I have only been here once, and we didn't eat, but food looks to be typical "pub grub".

Discriminatory. I was refused service to your establishment tonight because I had bought a single long neck from you three hours prior. That's a single standard drink every hour, which is fine by RSA law. As I was refused service I was referred to as 'he' multiple times by not only security but one of your staff members (whom stared at my chest while selling me the first and only long neck I'd receive that night.) I understand that you reserve the right to refuse service to anyone you believe is intoxicated, however because your security and staff member refused to refer to me by the pronoun 'she', and because they refused to look me in the eye I can only assume that they were discriminating against me from perceived gender issues. All I was told was that because I had purchased from you earlier in the day that barred me from entering the establishment (to which I would point out that there were no signs warning me of such barring). I sincerely hope you reply to this message so we can settle this issue in a civil manner, otherwise I have no qualms about alerting the anti-discrimination board to your offensive and frankly vile policies.

Good pub food. Best lemon lime and bitters I've had. Great outdoor seating area. Always have a good time here.

I love salt, I really do. But the food here is even way too salty for me!!!
Leo_rawr1
Agreed. Julias comment below is spot on, the courtyard has a great atmosphere. Its abundance of gas heaters makes it pleasant to sit outside and smoke with your beer even in winter. Food a little on the pricey side however.
Julia
Too pricey for a pub. I love the courtyard and the atmosphere but I feel like food is a bit to pricey.

We eat at the Courthouse for lunch at least once a week. It's pretty cruisy. They do $10 lunch specials Mon-Fri which always include a rump steak and usually a pizza, plus usually two or so other choices which vary. The rump is always cooked perfectly and served with a good edible salad and chips. You couldn't make it at home for $10. The pizza specials are really good. I like the thin crust and they are just the right size for one. Sometimes we do the $15 beef nachos which is enough for two and a tasty favourite with all the right ingredients - guacamole, sour cream, salsa and jalapeños. I like this place for a cheap lunch and a few beers, and we keep going back.

RUDE, BITCHY STAFF. Actually have not eaten here so cannot comment on the food. I just went for a few drinks on a Friday evening with a few friends. The pub itself is very cool. Old, lots of charater and off the beaten track. Particularly the beer garden. Lovely atmosphere when you walk out to it. <br/><br/>However.... the bar staff are unbelievably rude, slow and bitchy. It is mostly women working behind the bar in this pub and none of them look like they want to work there or deal with the public. The pub was not even that busy but everytime I went to the bar the 6/7 women staff that were behind the bar where so slow and the wait was insane. At one point a girl who was waiting beside me for a long time kept getting skipped in the queue and there was words exchanged between herself and the barmaid. It was terrible. How can they get away with such a sour attitude. <br/><br/>Finally, the bouncers in the place are rude, ignorant and heavy handed. <br/><br/>This place depends on its cool setting to survive. <br/>Wont be going here again.

Freat food...Service so so. Great food, have eaten here a few times and the food is always good and the menu has enough pub fare to satisfy even the pickiest of dinners. Service at the bar is lacking as they seem to favour locals over everyone else so you may be waiting a while for the locals to get their drinks filled before you get served.
Newtown Tragic
Great atmosphere. The best times at the Courthouse are sunny weekends at lunchtime in the beer garden- just try and find a seat!<br/>Get a the nachos- huge for 2 people, but all the food is good.

Pub Food. Good solid pub food. If people are wanting to come here for a dish to rival Machiavelli Ristorante in the CBD, then you are kidding yourself. Come here for a great tasty meal while you reserve your seats in the Beer Garden for your friends that work. This place has a great atmosphere and the bar staff are foxy.

I had the best lamb shanks here about a year ago. Please bring them back!

A decent pub with a great history. Cold beer on tap, atmosphere, best beer garden in newtown, space invaders, jukebox with your good music so much so that you don't have to be shitfaced to give money too, chunky crispy wedges and crabs racing. The list goes on. Bistro food is fresh, tasty and original. Still thinking about the pasta I had their with smoked trout and cherry tomatoes.
Will Power
Pub good food bad. $16 burger hardly any meat, most of the nice stuff was extra! Courthouse just can't get food right. Had nachos before nothing costs extra, quite big!
Jason
Awful. The main bar constantly smells of sick and the menu has recently been changed to a supposed more upmarket bistro style of food and gets it wrong everytime. The sauce I had on lamb tasted of maggi mix still and a steak at this dump was over 20 dollars. My partners chicken burger had a faint strip of chicken we found underneath a stale bit of bread and had a couple of chips on the side. Not only is the food bad you cant even sit in the garden and have a beer quietly because large tables of drinkers reserve it to the point of it being uncomfortable or unable to find a seat. The staff are in need of some training so people actually get served. Sorry folks, its an avoid....
