Review Hicksons Izakaya - Sydney

Coco and Vine (Coco & Vine)
We're hard core Japanese food fans so when we visited Hicksons Izakaya we had pretty high expectations. Greeted by Omar the owner and the super friendly staff, we grabbed a table with an amazing view of Walsh Bay. What's most impressive is the quality of the food in every dish we tried. It's right up there with the same quality we've experienced in Tokyo itself. Definitely try the stunning scallops! Thanks to the whole Hicksons Izakaya crew for an memorable experience and hosting us so well.

Despite the fact that it was fairly cold and rainy, we decided to check out Hicksons Izakaya for dinner and were not disappointed. It’s all outdoor seating, but they have heaters! We ordered the pork buns and the seafood platter, which included oysters, scallops, and sashimi. Everything was extremely fresh and delicious. For dinner, we tried the very tasty “chocolate sushi” — definitely worth it!

I always love coming back to this place. The service is so fantastic and the food is always great. I think it’s a secret gem that not enough people know about. The Walsh Bay surroundings are stunning and you can even add in a harbour walk here if you were going for lunch. I’ll definitely be back!!!

Place is situated by the dock and great view. Food is average though. Not worthy of the priced I’m afraid.

Worth it at 50% dimmis. Quite a small restaurant however food is very good.

The foods are overpriced. Our chicken teriyaki entree come surprisingly quick (within 5-8 min from ordering) but it was cold and the light batter on the skin was soggy. We feel our sushi rice is uncooked as it was still crunchy in the middle. Told the waitress and they said it is how they serve it. So if you like your sushi rice to be fully cooked then this is not a place to go. The wagyu steak was the only dish that we like.

The restaurant was fine, but we have easily had better Japanese food in one of the many other restaurants in Sydney. The staff were pleasant, and service was slow on a night that wasn’t very busy. Expensive for what you get, but quality was above average. Amazed that they could not supply chilli/capsicum powder — a staple at any Japanese restaurant!

Very small and cozy restaurant. Got a 50 percent off on Dimmi which made it worth going. The food was good. They accommodate most dietary requirements. The chocolate sushi is a must try if you have a sweet tooth. It's nothing too special- just some rice, nuttella and flakes. A bit different from the usual dessert. The service was great. Very friendly staff. Definitely going back :)

Food: The presentation of and the food itself rates low. Pretty much looked like I was eating from the local RSL club and the taste was average too (prawns were not fresh).

Ambience: place was smaller than I'd expected, but the sunset and water views is what makes up for it I guess.

Service: ok

Gorgeous little Japanese spot on the wharf. The view was absolutely stunning and the servers extremely attentive and friendly. The food was all super fresh, authentic, and reasonably priced. 100% would visit again

Nice presentation of Japanese food. We found that the food that we ordered were good but nothing to rave about. Service is really good. We ordered the beef steak which was tender but no char taste for my liking. The chicken teriyaki is quite nice.

We had a lovely dinner here last week. Service was excellent - staff were friendly, efficient and looked after us well. The food was pretty good as well - enjoyed the oysters and scallops for starters, and the pork belly and chicken were tasty mains that we shared.
A word on the location - it's right near the Wharf Theatre. So given our experience here , we have booked in again for dinner before the Wharf Revue later in the year. Looking forward to it.

The bento box is very substantial in portion size but a bit of a bit and miss - the soba salad and the sashimi were great, but the pork belly was very average. We also ordered the fresh tuna sushi roll and this was average.

Frugal foodie tip: you can receive 50% off during the restaurant's promotion with Dimmi.

Lovely little Japanese place on the wharf in Walsh Bay. The view was really nice of the water, especially on a sunny day.

We tried this place on a Dimmi special (50% off food) so the meal was really cheap. It was good food and the wait staff was friendly and didn't judge or push us to order more than we did.

I got a beef don with a poached egg. The egg was nice and runny, the rice was perfectly cooked and the beef was tasty and well seasoned.

My friend got the sashimi salad and she said it was delicious and fresh.

Even without the discount this place isn't expensive.

Used voucher here. Booking times limited to 2pm onwards but kitchen closes at 3 so they rush you to make your order almost like they sold vouchers to fill in those non peak pre closing times. Anyway steak was overcooked and bland. Seafood was okay.

WOW, just wow. I loved everything about this place. The food, the staff, the view and set up! I can not recommend it more and am looking forwarding to returning and taking my family.
We ordered so much food that we had to take some home!!

HICKSONS IZAKAYA

Went to try this place out with a cudo deal with workmates. Definately enjoyed each Japanese dish. Wasn't ideal for group sharing as items were small and similar to a fine dining resturant. But the experience was good. Staff were accommodating and the prices for mains were between $20 to $40 each. I recommend the pork belly as it was very soft and tender and the prawn vermicelli noodle dish was different and flavoursome. Desserts we chose were the matcha and chocolate dome. Preferred the chocolate richness over the green tea cake.

The venue was smaller than expected and in a outdoor covered setting. So it gets colder at night as you overlook the pier.

Overall, definately worth it for the price we paid and would go back.

So, what could be better than a little izakaya next to the water in Sydney? Not much, I think! Hicksons Izakaya has not been open that long, and is a welcome addition to the dining options in Walsh Bay. It’s a location that has its benefits and drawbacks: it’s busy every time there’s a show at the Roslyn Packer Theatre (formerly Sydney Theatre Company) but quiet the rest of the time. They’re trying to build up their lunchtime trade too; we were there on a very quiet Tuesday night.

Very nice modern twist to this cosy Japanese restaurant which boasts a beautiful view. The food served was delicious. We ordered the scallop and pork belly from the Izakaya menu. The scallop was fresh and had a light taste to it and the pork belly would melt in your mouth and delivers a deep flavour. For mains, we chose the grilled steak which was done medium and drizzled in a delicious sauce and the miso salmon which was cooked to perfection. However, I did discover a bone in the middle.
Snapshots Of Food
Hicksons Izakaya recently opened up in Walsh Bay. With a view this beautiful, this restaurant offers an intimate dining experience and being only a short walk from Wynyard/Circular Quay, these restaurants will be killing it this Valentines day. Hicksons Izakaya takes the authentic Japanese flavours and adds a modern twist. The food is not your traditional Japanese food, but rather it is a Western take on Japanese dining.

Hosting a stellar view of Walsh Bay, this is a wonderful secret spot to get away from the hustle of the city but soak in the sunny vibes. The menu lists plenty of favourites that you would expect at any good quality Japanese restaurant but also includes some unique choices.
All About Food Blog
Chef Hiro, Omar and their team at Hicksons Izakaya invited us to try the food at this fairly new restaurant at Walsh Bay. We went there at lunchtime during the festive season. We were lucky as the weather was quite friendly at that time. It could get quite hot and steamy in the area as I have experienced in the past.

In Short: Hicksons Izakaya blends authentic Japanese flavours with modern inspiration all with a focus on quality in a stunning setting. Tip: Without a doubt, treat yourself to the scallops.

They’re some of the best, period. Nestled in the calming enclave of Sydney’s Walsh Bay is a relaxed, yet sophisticated, take on the taste of Japan. Hicksons Izakaya bills itself as a ‘Japanese tapas experience’ that draws from authentic and modern influences to deliver on, what we think equals, some of the best meals we’ve had on our trips to the land of the rising sun.
The RnB Diary
Historically a working port, Walsh Bay has been transformed in recent years into a premium residential and dining precinct owing to its waterfront location and proximity to the Circular Quay transport hub. Right across from Roslyn Packer Theatre, Hicksons Izakaya attracts not only theatre goers and tourists but also locals with its modern take on traditional Japanese cuisine.
Does My Bomb Look Big In This
Hicksons Izakaya is packed at 5.30pm. The tiny forty-seater is rammed with well-dressed theatre types, speaking with modulated tones and rounded vowels. A steady stream of joggers and hipsters in sockless shoes parade past our table, which takes in Walsh Bay and the Sydney Harbour Bridge, depending upon which direction your chair happens to be facing. To ensure everyone has the best view, the lower part of this little glass box, thoughtfully tempered with draped canvas to limit your exposure to the sun, is dominated by a long banquette facing the sea. On the tier above, there is bar seating facing outwards, and above that, Chef Hiro Kano (ex-Tori Bar) commands a small, somewhat green crew. With the menu orientated towards izakaya-style drinking snacks, we ask for guidance on how much to order without much success. So we get stuck into an Ozeki Karatamba Sake ($22/180ml) that’s dry as advertised, but softens into a rounder drop with food. It’s a honjozo sake, which basically means there...
Love At First Bite
Hicksons Izakaya is a vibrant Japanese tapas restaurant located in Sydney’s Walsh Bay. They serve modern Japanese cuisine with fresh and high quality ingredients and a great waterfront view where you can enjoy a day or night out by Sydney harbour. We came here for lunch one weekend and will share our experience with you in this post.

It's date night and Matt and have been invited to dine at Hicksons Izakaya. We stroll along the beautiful suburb and look at all the theatre patrons. It's a warm night but slightly overcast. Regardless I enjoy the view. I wonder how much it costs to live in Walsh Bay as it's such a nice area and right by the bridge. Matt and I talk real estate as Matt sips on a sapporo beer and I cheers with a moscato sparkling wine. We order a series of Japanese tapas dishes.
Sir And Mlady Dine Out
What strikes you initially is the location, water views and the view of the Harbour Bridge with its dare-devil climbers. We were fortunate to see a lovely P&O ocean liner grace by. . For drinks we had wine. Mlady went sweet for starters and had a really lovely Wicked Secrets Sparkling Pink Moscato S.A. Sir had a Scarpantoni Cabernet Sauvignon McLaren Vale S.A. We both enjoyed these so much that we went back for seconds.
Thewhereto
Hicksons Izakaya is situated in the perfect location for a relaxing evening, right on the water in Walsh Bay, surrounded by boats. The area, once an industrial wharf area, but these days a cultural hub with multiple theatres and this restaurant would be perfect to dine at before a show. Though they also have lunch specials, in particular bento boxes if you’re out of the office for your meal. This Izakaya restaurant has classic and modern styling, with a number of tables and bar seating that are harbour facing. The kitchen is open, allowing you to watch Chef Hiro and his staff in action. He was also lovely to talk to and learn from, and he’s been a chef all his life.

Came here before a show, and I thought the ambience was quite nice. The staff was very friendly. Friend and I had the bento boxes - friend had the sushi mix and I had the slow cooked beef stew. It came with sashimi piece, salad, miso, rice and daily side. On the day we got soba noodles side. I would have to say the soba noodles were so good! I would have loved another bowl of it.
