Review Sanpo Japanese Restaurant - Sydney

Dan Peyton
We were so excited to have a sushi restaurant in Helensburgh and we were quite sure we’d be back each week, or more often once takeaway is an option. Food was good but not special, but portions were so small that we had to order twice what we normally would as a family. Sort out the high pricing and we’ll be back

Best Japanese I had in awhile even comparing to the ones in Sydney! Don't get why people complain about the small portions but u get in quality what you pay for.

My partner and I were very excited for a Japanese restaurant to come to Helensburgh, it’s one of our favourite cuisines. The food was very fresh and nice, but as others have said nothing special to justify how much we ended up paying. We spent over $100 and walked out starving. Disappointing because we would have been weekly customers otherwise. They really need to sort out their portion size or have the price reflect the current portions.

Great quality Japanese dishes! Highly recommend!

Top quality local Japanese restaurant that is outstanding on every front! Service is great, food is absolutely delicious and the drinks are cold. The hardest part is making sure they aren’t booked out so you can come in and treat yourself. Can’t wait to go back and try the hotpot 😋

Absolutely great genuine Japanese restaurant! Not pretentious, affordable, delicious. We tried a few different dishes and were never disappointed. Homemade drinks are great too. We love this place and will come back.

Amazing quality sushi and sashimi!! Don’t need to travel up to Sydney or down to Wollongong anymore. Thank you so much for moving to our area! You will be seeing a lot more of us!

Amazing food, very generous serving we got!
The staffs are super friendly and welcoming, and kept checking on us if the food was okay.
Loved the service and the quality of the food there!

I've visited this place 2 times..1st time with a small party that a friend organised where we ate Nabe (Japanese hotpot)... The 2nd with works lunch where I had the Ramen set menu.

I don't understand any review on here which suggests this is authentic Japanese food...The staff are Japanese but the food is not good... Sashimi should have a slight rubbery texture which snaps when bitten into..this was soft and limp suggesting it's old and/or frozen. The karaage tasted oily like it hadn't been cooked in high temperature or was cooked in old oil. The ramen noodles were ok but slightly overcooked, but the soup base tasted like it was from a package like instant noodles...there was nothing like would be found in Japan....

Very disappointing, especially as the portion sizes are tiny and price so high.

We have eaten in this restaurant before and opted one night for takeaway. They significantly reduce the sizes of the portions for takeaway but charge the same amount! The attached image is $28 worth of food, portion sizes you'd pay no more than $6 for at any other japanese restaurant. I called to check that they hadn't made a mistake and they confirmed this was correct and sorry I felt it wasn't enough food. Never again, absolute robbery!

Sanpo is our fave local spot... been coming here since their early days and to date we've never had a bad meal at Sanpo! In fact, they just keep getting better and better. Love the authenticity of the food - amongst our faves are their sashimi & sushi, tempura udon, wagyu hotpot.. when traditional dishes are done to perfection, we keep coming back for more. To top it off they have the warmest Japanese hospitality!

Small portion size, tasteless stock, very pricey
We went there for Japanese hot pot on a cool day, ordered a hot spot that it says is for 2-3 people, Wagyu beef with veggies. Yet the portion size is really small - only around 10+ very very thin sliced beef, I feel that portion size is not even for 2-3 people but one.
In terms of taste, the seafood stock side tastes no different from water with salt, while the pork bone stock side tastes like from the packet of seasoning from Nissan instant noodles. Runny and disappointing.
For the beef, it’s not as tender as other Wagyu beef I had before which doesn’t melt much in the mouth.
Service was very good though and clean.

Best sushi in the area. My favourite place to eat. The service is amazing, the food is wonderful and you truly feel welcome at all times. Can not recommend it enough!

We have been here many times and starting to become regulars. This is one of our favorite restaurants in Sydney. Staffs are very friendly, caring and provide nice service everytime. We love sushi, lotus sandwiches, chawanmushi and all of desserts they have. We will come back here again shortly.

Not many Japanese diners in Sydney do more than sushi, teriyaki chicken and katsu these days.

This place puts in the extra effort and has a chef capable of fronting both sushi and more traditional Japanese eats.

Warm up with Wagu/seafood shabu shabu hot pot with friends. Ramen and udon also available to those needing extra winter comfort - comes complete with spiced 'lava egg'.

They have all the usual stuff for those who like tempura, katsu, Japanese salads etc...

Winter time is also the beginning of the sea urchin harvesting season and the chef here has made this unique meat available to try as $4 sushi or $8 sashimi. It's a really unique taste and texture - creamy and briney like a mixture of caviar and oz-tongue from a delicatessen: I actually really enjoyed this and will definitely try it again.

Huge beer and saké selection and best of all super friendly staff in a cosy atmosphere. Ticks all the boxes.

Only thing I wish they had was a good suki yaki- this is almost impossible to find in sydney these days (bar Wagaya in newtown)

The quality of food was reasonable. Service was tops, with a friendly attitude. However, me and my partner went for the hot pot which states that it serves 2-3 people. On top of that we got a few other sushi dishes. The hot pot was filled up with cabbage and a very, very minuscule portion of the beef. We had only four-five bite sized slices and the hot pot was finished. After dinner, I was still very much hungry and had take out on the way home. Highly frustrated, and dinner ended with a high bill! Food portions are highly under-portioned.

Very friendly staff and nice food, specially the sashimi because was very fresh. I also had the fish hot pot for first time and they explained very nicely the best way to eat it. Thanks for a lovely evening.

Rosebery isn’t exactly somewhere I would send people in search of a culinary adventure. Which is why our recent trip to Sanpo in that very suburb is a testament to how effective Facebook marketing is. Sanpo ads of their delicious looking uni gunkan maki were populating my feed on an almost regular basis. I was also getting tagged in it by other like-minded uni lovers. The cherry gang (myself, Jeff, Sarah and sometimes a sneaky cameo from Eric) were keen to try something off the beaten track and going away from our usual CBD haunts during Mardi Gras weekend seemed like the perfect plan.

I love this place. They have really tasty Japanese food. Bit pricey although food quailty, hostest and variety is A+. Try the soft shell crab, it is great!

Live in the city, but drive here because the Suishi is so good. Restaurant is super clean, service impeccable and great value. Choice of dishes and quality of the ingredients is so good and clearly made fresh. Great job, everyone from Sydney should make the effort to visit.

Nice and fresh sashimi, but quite small sized of sushi rolls. Seafood hotspot was abit off my expectation cause the stock is tasteless and with very few selection of seafood. Overall it's quite a pricey restaurant.

Fantastic customer service, staff are warm and attentive! Japanese beers were top notch! Food portions need to be more generous, our large sashimi platter $35 was small and unlike the one shot in the photo gallery.

Awesome! We go here often and it never disappoints. The staff are so lovely and the attention to detail makes even a quick bite a bit special. Definitely try the eggplant and the kingfish!

I don't really understand the lukewarm reviews for Sanpo, this place is great. The sushi is fresh, clearly whoever sources the dish has an eye for quality. There's a good variety, with authentic classics and interesting twists in equal measure.

The prices are high for an everyday dinner joint, but the food really justifies the price tag. As a local, I couldn't be happier to have a place like Sanpo nearby.

Delicious Sushi and INCREDIBLE service. A tad pricey ($180 for four) for a casual dinner but it is very good food.

Fish is very fresh but you must have the eggplant!

Melt in your mouth sushi! Good sized rolls... Not too big. The spicy tuna rolls were quite light on the spice. The eggplant with miso sauce was highly recommended. It was nice but didn't live up to my expectations. Would definitely go back for sushi.

Had Saturday lunch with my partner.
Started with mouth melting eggplant with miso, then moved to delicious sushi set with extra sea urchin, which was unbelievable, also loved a piece of blue fin tuna. Then ordered tempura scallop with prawns, which was beautifully served on scallop shell.

Staff is very friendly, and as I found out later, the place is owned by chef.

I would recommend to sit inside because tables outside are kind of close to the road, and eggplant is a must try.

Cosy little restaurant, excellent level of customer service as traditional Japanese standards. Food was really authentic! Went 2 weekends in a row, would recommend friends to try the place.

We've been coming here for 3 weekends in a row when we discovered this little hidden gem in Alexandria. The beautiful tonkotsu broth used for the wagyu beef shabu shabu reminded me of the ramen broth we had in Japan so I can vouch for Sanpo that the food is amazingly authentic.Service is consistently great and friendly. I would have brought my family here sooner if I knew about this place any earlier. Come if you want wagyu to melt in your mouth LOVE IT! Christine

It's refreshing to experience good quality Japanese food in Sydney for a change. Kudos to you Sanpo for bringing authenticity to the eastern suburbs.

A Bit expensive as compared to other in this area, the food is not of the EPIC proportions but the Japanese beers are amazing, worth the try
Steve
Great quality food, ice cold suntory malt on tap, service is spot on and very attentive, friendly and helpful ... A great neighbourhood asset. Keep up the good work

Authentic Taste of Japan. What a pleasure to find a reasonably priced Japanese restaurant serving up dishes that reminded me of my culinary experiences in Japan. The food here is simply fresh and delicious. Nothing pretentious here, but clearly a great deal of skill and pride that certainly impressed me and my Japanese wife. It's easy to see that the owners here are all about the food.

I have eaten at many Japanese restaurants around Sydney and on the whole I have walked away disappointed and usually with the lingering after affects of MSG. You will often pay more money for a trendy / popular Japanese that is lacking the authentic tastes you will find here.

good Luck Sanpo, you deserve success and don't change anything!
