Review Smoking Gun Bagels - Sydney

Andrew Thornton
“I loved everything except the seating” - Girlfriend I agree. The bagels themselves were amazing and the coffee was great (so great I bought some of their beans). Overall, very satisfied with Smoking Gun Bagels. As an added benefit, they also sell bagels for you take home bandits. Do it. Try it. Maybe I’ll see you there one day!

A bit of an odd location but it’s walking distance from the cbd and it has a pretty cool set up with a garage door and small no-fuss seating wth indoor and outdoor options. There aren’t many bagel options in Sydney, let alone great bagel options, but smoking gun is up there. I ordered half and OG and half a Liver Little. The OG was the fav, and although not a traditional lox with onions and capers, the pickled fennel was nice twist. The bagels are soft and chewy, but not dry and tough- winning. The coffee was great too. Although the bagels are pricey, they have a breakfast (bacon and egg) and lunch option which comes in at a good price.

I love these bagels. The Montreal style chewy deliciousness will always be my favourite. The toppings can get quite fancy for my taste but they are very yummy. You can also just buy some to bring home and make them your own way which is what I usually do. Very happy they have these bagels in Sydney

Quite possibly the most beautiful bagels ive ever seen. Set in a small industrial feeling space with outdoor seating. Coffee is great too
Chris Plowright
Great sunny location with amazing tasting bagels. I'm not a bagel person, but, I went back the next day. If your looking for good coffee then do not go past here. Really really good coffee!

Good bagels, even better staff. Came here to pick up some bagels for a pizza bagel night. Bagels are made fresh and and not a bad place to get coffee either. Rosemary, the girl at the counter, is super funny and will tell you everything you need to know about bagels.

Ordered the bagel with Salmon on it, got home and opened it to realise the core ingredient was missing. Contacted them to let them know what had happened and not only did they not apologise, they didn’t even acknowledge it. After years as a loyal customer waiting 30+ minutes just for a bagel as they were good, this is just the icing on the cake to finally pull the plug, they clearly lack any customer service and the quality is clearly following the way of their customer service.

LIFE CHANGING BAGELS! Best bagels I have had in Australia. I have had bagels in Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney. And these are the closest to the ones you will find in the U.S. In kosher delis. Beautiful

Website says open till 1pm on a Saturday. Came especially to try their bagels at 11.45am, and all closed. Managed to find someone who was unapologetic and gave no reason , just stated .. rather obstinately.. that they were closed.

Food: 4
Service: 3
The bagels here are so good!! We got the kimchi and cheese, and the smoked salmon with cream cheese. The girl who served us was pretty rude and impatient when we asked for recommendations.

I got these at a market and it looks like they might have increased their prices compared to the shop but $2.50 for the simple bagel seems fine for such a tasty bagel with perfect chewiness. But then I got one with stuff on it and paid $13, which was ridiculous - my salmon and pickled cucumber was good but I saw a tomato and feta one go past with very hard and green tomato, which must have been disappointing.

Lunch time favourite. Recommend if you work around Woolloomooloo and want to grab a quick bite that will still keep you fuller for longer. Super cheap too.
Winner: Salmon and cream cheese.

Went here a while ago and had the best bagel I’ve had in Sydney! loved it. the bagel itself was warm and soft, and the chicken liver with chicken bits on top were fresh and tasted great too! Will definitely go back to try more soon.

The salmon bagel is winning. This place is my final destination after finishing my morning run. I know this doesn’t sound right - eating directly post work out. But I just can’t help if I have time to detour a bit 🙈

I tried to buy a regular flat white and cup of tea this morning and was very disappointed.

They didn’t sell tea and my flat white was $4 and extremely small, around half the size of a normal coffee. The taste was disappointing too.

Could not swing my cat in here even if I dared. But cat free excursions have revealed an awesome selection of bagels with tasty well chosen toppings. Recommended.

Having previously tried the bagels from their stall at Eveleigh Markets, it was great to dine-in at their Woolloomooloo eatery, and get the opportunity see their bagels being handmade onsite.
Chewy, with a nice crust, and slightly sweet, the Montreal-style bagels are woodfired to perfection. Classic bagel toppings like smoked salmon, pickles and Neufchâtel sit on the menu alongside more unique fare like cauliflower with smoked vegan cream cheese. Naked bagels are also available to purchase to go.

A really lovey place, with a nice ambience, staffs were really nice and friendly. All of the bagels are really good !! It was crispy and a bit of chewy together. My favourite was the date and the pastrami. It was a bit pricey but worth to try!!
Lee
Okay bagels served with a side of attitude.

Wouldn’t return purely based on service. Girl we placed our order with couldn’t have been more disinterested. Obviously wanted to be somewhere else and we disrupted her daydreaming.

such a cute little shop at the corner of the street 😍 the smoked bagel on the netflix & dill was super yum - a must try! the cream cheese was quite light and didnt have the usual creaminess i would like to have but the bagel itself was yum!

We ordered pretty much most of the items on the menu:
Curried Chicken, “meh”
Pastrami, ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Salmon, ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Peas, ⭐️⭐️
Pork Belly. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️👍🏼
Also had the iced coffee as it was too hot outside to have a ‘normal’ hot one. Wifey said coffee was too bitter but I personally liked it.

We’d be back if we are in the area.

Ever since Brooklyn Boy Bagels closed their physical store I’ve been on the look out for a replacement. Came across Smoking Gun Bagels and decided to give them a try.

Pictured are the Rhuby Rose and Champagne Papi. I’ll be reviewing the former.

Sitting down against the awkward and uncomfortable wall seating it quickly becomes apparent to the amount of flies that have been invited in via the open shop front. Bagels are on full display for the flies to land on as they please.
I only hoped my bagel was selected from the back kitchen was fly-free.

After waiting a while the bagels arrived. Then we collected our own cutlery + napkins.
Presentation wise, it seems a slightly odd. My bagel appearing half empty/incomplete. Possibly predicting the expectation to uneaten.
The thick creme cheese sat thickly against the bagel, but did little in helping balance out the sickly sweetness of the rhubarb, creme catalana and almond streusel. I am a big fan of sweets but I think in this instance there was just too much going on.

Smoking Gun Bagels is a tiny store tucked away in the quieter back streets of Woollomooloo. Seating is very limited but bagels are a quick eat so it isn’t a long wait if you’re after a table. The menu is quite simple, with options ranging from the brekkie staple of bacon & eggs, to more exciting flavours like Kimcheese as well as dessert options if something like lemon meringue is more your thing. The You’re Just Too Good to Beetroot is our pick, served with with an incredibly smooth Pepe Saya Creme Cheese and cured salmon

I was so loving the food I forgot to take photos. What a discovery! What a hidden gem in Woolloomooloo! I tried the Wahgyu one. I was skeptic because I am not a big bagel fan. But the flavours were just perfect. Must try !
Jessenia Jauw
Their bagels are amazing! I tried morning glory and kim got beef for the savoury one and I had the honeycomb for the sweet one. I really love their bagel especially the kim got beef💕

A small cafe serving nothing but bagels. You can smell that woodfire as you walk into the shop. Fresh bagels are served and carefully inspected, great quality control. We tried their smoke salmon and wagyu bagel. Super impressed with the flavour and presentation, should have come here earlier. I am not sure if this guy is comparable to NY bagel but it is the best by far in Sydney
Emily Chan
One of the best bagels I've ever had hands down. There was a great balance of the filling and the bagel and none was overpowering the other. Would definitely recommend this place and will be returning. The only thing I didn't like was the location as I'm not familiar with the area.
Bradley Forde
Had the morning glory with the secret sauce. Wood fired Bagel with Wood fired Bacon. A little special dipping sauce in the side. A must have!

Last month I went to this famous homemade bagel place, Smoking Gun Bagels at Woolloomooloo. The place itself is not that big but easily spotted and very comfortable. Cappuccino - $3.50. Honey I'm Comb - $10. Peanut butter with macadamia & wattleseed, honeycomb & flake chocolate. The bagel was very soft and really good! The best bagel that I've had so far. The honeycomb give an extra crunchiness to the dish itself while the peanut butter give a sticky sweet taste. All component in one bite made a really delicious taste!
ChickenBo
Fantastic bagels cooked in an awesome wood fire oven.
A very small eating area with great staff/service. I highly recommend the rhubarb bagel for your dessert course :)
Finding good bagels in Australia is a treat, and this is one of them.

My photo didn't do any justice for this very scrumptious bagels~! Couldn't believe Sydney has this hidden gem in Woolloomooloo!!. I highly recommend this place for a great variety of bagels.. and I'd say come early cause they run out pretty quickly especially the popular ones!. Personally, I don't have any fave cause I loveeee all of them!!

Tried this place which claim themselves sell Montreal style-bagels. It's located in Woollomoloo not far from King Cross station. I ordered Kim Got Beef, bagel with smoked beef, kimchi and cheese. Kimchi not spicy as it should be, so safe for those who doesnt like spicy food.

Best bagels in Sydney! Kim got beef is the bomb, great combination of flavours with the tri-seed bagel, just delicious! Friendly staff and good coffee too, I will definitely be back

Hidden in the leafy Cathedral Street in Woolloomooloo is a vibrant and fragrant-filled cafe which serves authentic Montreal-style bagels. Toasted in a purpose-built wood fired oven at the back of the tiny, nondescript but contemporary cafe, Smoking Gun Bagels' hand-knitted bagels are addictively chewy and sweet on the inside and crispy on the outside.

The open-concept kitchen also permits a full reception on their painstaking and meticulous process where the bagel dough was dunked in boiling water and then placed in the oven. My Miso Hungry, which combines the awesome and fresh sesame bagel with smoked salmon and hollandaise sauce, is atrociously delectable. It seems that the sweet bagels are made just for everything.

P.S. The coffee and orange juice are as limp and forgettable as you can imagine.
@burgersnbikinis
Best damn bagels I've ever tasted. Full stop.
In a tiny location in a backstreet of Wooloomooloo, is this hidden gem pumping out fresh wood fired bagels.
I can't even describe how perfect these bagels are. Not like the dense chewy NY style bagels, but instead quite light and perfectly crispy on the outside.
But wait it gets better. To begin with they come served with lashings of Pepe Saya cream cheese which I could literally drown in it's so perfect.
Then you can choose a fully loaded bagel off their menu.
We got the Habsolutely: wood fire chicken with harissa mayo, cream cheese, mountain pepper and parsley. Omfg it was good. I want it every day delivered to my desk for lunch. Happy days!
For dessert got the Bieber Fever: cream cheese, strawberries, lemon myrtle and marshmallow. A sweet treat for sure.
Great staff, top location and bagels you'll be addicted to.

Just Devine !!!

An artisan wood fired bagel bakery oasis just off an insanely busy street.

Coffee is made to perfection.

This place oozes passion.

🚩🚩 @smokinggunbagels 🚩🚩
🍩 KIM GOT BEEF: smoked Wagyu, spicy Kim Chi, coriander and crispy shallots 🍩

Errrrhmagawwd. Talk about being a convert, this bagel was the shit! The smoked beef (think finely sliced silverside) and kimchi were a smashing success together and the fresh coriander just added refreshing flavour to it all! If I'm ever gonna attempt a home 'burgel' I know who im getting my produce from 👌🏻

Amazing bagels... Almost as good as the ones I've devoured in New York. Love the everything bagel... Good coffee too.. Worth the short walk from city centre.

Popped by at around 9am in the morning after quite a far walk from St James Station. Ordered a poppyseed bagel with salmon and avo and it truly was warm and delicious! One of the best bagels I have ever tried, however you can't stray far from their new menu which has set ingredients. Overall such a lovely place with a very rustic decor and the best bagels in Sydney 😊

This has to be the best bagel place in Sydney. I popped in early on Saturday morning and grabbed a table. The bagels are delicious they are hand rolled and cooked in a Woodfire oven. I ordered the Habsolutely which has woodfire chicken, Harissa Mayo, cream cheese, mountain pepper and parsley and the Kim Got Beef with smoked Wagyu, Kim chi, coriander and crispy shallot. Both were good but the Habsolutely was my favourite, the combination of flavours was spot on and just the right balance of ingredients. The Kim Got Beef was equally as good with good flavour but a little bit dry. It still comes back to the bagels and they were great, I will definitely be back.

We hiked over from Pitt St to check these guys out. We all enjoyed our bagels, great little operation and the coffee was good too. Excellent way to start day. Well worth the effort.

Wood fired, Montreal style bagels that are light and a little sweet, just how I like them! I like the whole concept of the Bagelry, their name, their packaging and even the names of their Bagels. I usually go on a weekend to buy either half a dozen or a dozen, put them in the freezer, and have them for breakky with my almond spread, yum yum! I'm not a coffee drinker but hubby is and he rates their coffee rather highly. They use sensory lab beans which we first knew from Melbourne and love. #saksrecommends

NO BAGELS!
9am on a Friday morning I went in to get a bagel and coffee for breakfast, only to be told there were no bagels and it would be a 30 minute wait....You would think a bagel shop would make sure they always have bagels available. So I promptly left and got a bacon and egg roll from the cafe down the street. From my past experiences their bagels aren't that great and overpriced...definitely not worth waiting for.
Rafael Michael
I love their bagels.
Its very straight to the point.
I really like their champagne papi bagels.
Good for snacks or passing time or chit chat place with friends.
Lee Coleman
Great little place in an interesting part of town , nice simple menu with excellent flavours and choice .... the coffee is nek level superb and always a vibrant atmosphere going down . Definitely worth checking out .

Lee .

Ordered a bagel with cream cheese this morning to take away. Waited over 20 minutes for a few lazy staff members to toast a bagel and spread some cream cheese on it. Wasn't even warm when I received it. I could understand if I was waiting for a fresh-out-of-the-oven bagel, but I wasn't. Such a disappointment for a place with so much character and tasty coffee.
Brandon Le Gallez
Great coffee, great look/feel, great bagels... but be prepared to wait half your life to have someone slice a bagel in half and slap some cream cheese on it. No way should it take that long to prepare bagels...
Martin Smith
Best bagels in Australia, hands down. Don't expect the American style, thick doughy round stuff; these are the real McCoy, thinner, chewy and slightly smokey. Best to try them straight out of the wood fire oven, when you can smash one or two of them while they are soft and tender, no condiments needed! Ever so slightly sweeter than the authentic Montreal-style bagels, but in a blind test I wouldn't be able to tell the difference.
Monica
Montreal style bagels are served here , they are wood fire oven baked, thinner, denser and sweeter than the usual bagels.
For the sweet bagel we had "Scone Wrong" - rosella & riberry jam, Pepe Saya cream cheese, pickled rosella & lemon myrtle.
Savoury opted for "Hands Off Snakey" - woodfired bacon, gribiche herbed egg mix.
Love the flavours of the toppings (especially the rosella one), but I think I still prefer my bagels less sweet and more thicker - give it a go !
Sweetandyummie
Nice cafe located on the back streets of Woolloomooloo. Street parking is easy and very close to the domain. They have a good range of bagels and selection of toppings. The coffee is a special blend of sensory lab. I highly recommend the cinnamon and raisin bagel with the lemon cream cheese.
Limatango
Had the yid life crisis bagel - delicious. Avo and kaffir lime, who knew?!
Points off because they forgot about my coffee and I do feel it's a bit overpriced ($14 for the bagel).

OMG this place was awesome. Been wanting to go for a while now and finally got my chance. Trendy little joint in Wolloomooloo with a cool barista and two nice guys running the place. A range or Montreal style loaded bagels on offer. These are boiled, hand rolled and you can actually watch them making them and sliding them into the wood fired oven. They are thinner, not so heavy and Dense in the belly so very enjoyable to eat. You pick a topping, they make it and then, use a "smoking gun" or hand torch to melt the top. I got the champagne Papi pastrami, cheese OH SO YUM I do love bagels. You can choose from a few types of bagels too. They also sell cronuts, icing topped bagels and coffees. Can eat inside, outside or alfresco.
I_am_pie
The bagels are fantastic, love the fit out and the staff are very friendly. Had the hands off snakey, not so salmon and champagne papi which was that standout, the cheese is melted in the woodfired oven and you can really taste the smokiness. All were delicious though
Jules
Lovely space and friendly staff. The "not salmon" bagel was difficult to eat but delicious. $14 is pretty steep though especially when the bagels are so small!

Watch VIDEO REVIEW in LINK!

Montreal-style bagels have reached the shores of Sydney, Australia! In some Australian cafes, you can sometimes get bagels, in the form of plain or seeded that you eat with cream cheese, peanut butter, butter or blueberry-flavoured. But Smoking Gun Bagels are wood-fired and made on-premises with fillings that are out of this world!
Amy
The bagels at this joint are delicious! Best I've had in Sydney. My favourite is the Champagne Papi (if i'm after something savoury) or the Queen P (if i'm feeling like something sweet). The coffee is smooth and the staff are super friendly and helpful. Will be going back again and again!
Sarahversuscarbs
I find the bagels too sweet and light! A friend of mine brought me a few takeaway bagels. The sweetness was okay when I added sweet spreads, but I'm very much a savory kind of gal. I also like my bagels chewier. Having said that, anyone who likes sweeter, Montreal-style bagels will probably dig them!
Susan ChocolateSuze Thye
Smoking Gun Bagels in Woolloomooloo specialises in Montreal style bagels. Their bagels are individually hand rolled, boiled in water that has been sweetened with honey, before being baked in a woodfire oven.
Priscilla
Nice decent bagels and food, but overpriced considering the size of the bagels. The major letdown is the customer service, every time I go here I always end up with the wrong order. The staff is also not very engaged or helpful. It is a shame.
Nadia
Excellent little bagel place specialising in the Montreal style - they're slightly sweet, chewy and damn addictive. I tried the Queen P, which involved lashings of peanut butter, sweet macadamia brittle and a sprinkling of salt. So rich that I couldn't finish the whole thing! Good coffee and it's fun to watch the bagel guy efficiently shaping, boiling, then baking the bagels on the mezzanine level. Will be back for sure.
Princess Greedy Guts
This newbie has only been around for 3 weeks butvis already a hit. Specialising in Montreal style bagels as opposed to NY style, its smaller in size, boiled in a honey infused brith before being woodfired. The result is a crunchy bagel rather then a chewy one. A bit too crunchy & hard by itself for my liking but with one of the delicious toppings its perfect. The hands off snakey - with crispy bacon, herbed egg gribiche is delicious. There are 2 sweet options & both are amazing. The scone wrong is refreshing with a hint of rosella & a more decadent & sweet version is their peanut butter with macadamia brittle. Great coffees & friendly service, no wonder it has already become a hidden gem.
Esther
After Tobys estate disappeared, was curious to find out what the new shop had to offer. Appears to be same ownership as before so coffee was same old (v good).
Was so keen to try their woodfire bagel but when I finally did, was a little bit disappointed with their champagne papi - what the staff recommended as her favourite, but was rather too salty for my liking but then again it's cheese, ham, pickles and pickled cabbage so it's unfair to judge purely based on that - I shall try again for another one on the menu (though somewhat limited - only about 3 or 4 on the menu) so it is too early to judge at this stage.
Slightly expensive for a bagel - expect around $14 to $15. But big enough to fill you up.

After reading a few articles on the joint and being partnered with a US bagel fiend, Smoking Gun were on my radar well before opening. Knowing what Sydney weekend mobs can be like anywhere newly-opened, I visited these guys during the working week for a quiet bite, free from expected crowds. No surprise, parking is a bit of a mission. Once you arrive, you also notice that seating is, too. The place is a bit smallish, and given the toppings served up on these bad boys, takeaway isn't yet ideal, being served in shallow trays in paper bags. I fortunately nabbed a sunny table during the first visit to relax and enjoy without being faced with the challenge of eating during stop-start-Sydney transit.

I found the coffee here quite good, but naturally the bagels are the stars. Being fresh made, in clear, elevated view behind the counter in a wood fire oven its hard not to feel enticed. The menu features some amusing titles and some worth taking seriously. Try everything else before you take on the Champagne Papi and Not So Salmon, because these two are the kings, and there will be no desire to go beyond once discovered. In fact there is no beyond. The creamy, fermented cabbage makes very good friends with pastrami, pickle and cabbage. I eat something like this and wonder why we don't see more of this amazing combination around. I love that hot smoked trout is preferred over an expected smoked salmon. Pepe Saya cream cheese is in no way heavy and all the quantities are topped right. Both are light, very well balanced and incredibly moreish. I sampled the Queen P and unfortunately found it lacking. There was an imbalance of flavour and texture and after the first bite it all seemed the same. There is a slight hint of sweet in the brittle but something is needed to cut through the nuttiness on this one.

The bagels are hand made on site, so there can be margin for inconsistency in crunch, however this is welcomed. I'd rather it here than in the toppings. The outside is crunchy, and the center slightly sweet with some nice density. I'd love to see this place in a larger location, however fear that may take away from the feel.
