Review Fu Manchu - Sydney

Accidentally stumbled across this gem for lunch today and was so impressed!! The owner was the front of house, chef and server all in one and she did such an incredible job!! Food was cooked to order, delicious and servings were generous. Will absolutely be back :) thank you!

What a brilliant place for lunch! Annie is just delightful and the food is fresh and full of flavour. The atmosphere is uplifting which is exactly what you need when you've been to a medical appointment in the area.

Gorgeous food, friendly service, appealing wine list (all wines available by glass plus byo), nice selection of teas, yummy desserts, relaxed setting - a Darlinghurst icon - always check current opening hours, they fluctuate ;-) Dec 2021: lunch 12-3, dinner takeaway only Wed-Fri

Not cheap for Chinese food but damn good!! With lockdown, we got home delivery - pork sang choi bao, prawn assam curry, bbq pork plate, and poached asian greens. Everything was yum and we'll definitely be visiting when things open up again. šŸ˜€ Oh, the delivery guy (Larry I think) was really friendly. šŸ‘

Very tasty food, good service, the meals were served quickly. The cashew chilli chicken was so good and not spicy

Elevated comfort food. A little hole-in-the-wall that I stop by once in a while for some quick fix for Indo-Chinese food. Today I had the Char Siu Wonton Noodle soup and it was a solid 10 out of 10! Everything from the broth to the noodles tasted absolutely fresh and above quality than your mainstream Asian/Chinese cuisine. The texture of the noodles were chewy yet firm enough for a nice bite; wontons cooked to perfection; as well as their popular Char Siu Pork that they offer across their menu. I am now sitting here with a full stomach (and empty bowl of course) before Iā€™m able to get up to think about what to try next. Tasty and comforting food!! Cheers.

Best Food and Atmosphere, Cosy little place, it just reminds me of Japanese street restaurants. I did have a soup, and It was Amazing. Thank you for the great experience.

Seafood Sambal : šŸ˜ Amazing
Pork Dumplings : šŸ˜ Amazing
Nyonya Chicken & Potato Curry : šŸ˜ Amazing

Words canā€™t describe how I happy I am to have stumbled into this restaurant. The flavours of the food seriously brought back childhood memories of my grandmotherā€™s own recipes. The Ngong Chicken & Potato Curry was to die for. The chicken was cooked perfectly and the spices in the curry reminded me of home. The dumplings are on another level. Add extra chilli oil and you seriously will not be disappointed. Best restaurant Iā€™ve been to in a looooong time.

Food so flavorful and authentic it reminded me of my grandmas cooking ! The sambal is mild with a lovely stir fry taste perfect with seafood. The chicken and potato curry was amazing !! The chicken was juicy and soaked up the flavors of the beautiful curry. The Kirin apple cider was one of the best Iā€™ve had and I highly recommend! Its a slightly dry beer with a refreshing crisp of apple. Lovely service but extra staff would be recommended.

Back on Victoria street, next door to where I originally ate with them, it feels a million years ago, they are no longer at the Kirketon Hotel on Darlinghurst Street. Dined with them for a birthday celebration and the food was tasty but I found the portions really small, for just over $40 a head. Beef rendang and the lettuce wraps were the highlights.
Anna
Their vegan noodle soup is delicious, should have ordered two of this. The eggplant dish was a little bland, but their fried rice was tasty too so I'd say overall a great meal. Unfortunately the dumplings/buns were vegetarian which was a shame as I was really craving dumplings this day!
Does My Bomb Look Big In This
Spending most of my early twenties living in Darlinghurst, my history with Fu Manchu dates back two decades to the mid nineties, a decade before I became a food writer. This longstanding restaurant was once located on Victoria Street, the other of the two streets whose intersection make up the trademark cross a republican like me prefers to imagine as the Kings Cross origin story. Of course that was before the upwardly mobile arrived and renamed everything Potts Point. These days youā€™ll find Fu Manchu, decked out much more beautifully with 1930s Shanghai girls art and carved wooden screens, on Darlinghurst Road in the Kirketon Hotel. This was one of the first restaurants to put Northern Chinese dumplings onto Sydneyā€™s radar, so we kick off with Fraser Island Crab and Chicken Dumplings ($16/4 pieces) sauced for you with a light, sesame vinaigrette. They have the same gossamer skins I remember, combined with a quality filling, a standard that many Sydney restaurants have attained in the ensuing years. Booze was another high point of my Fu Manchu memories, with...

Working late one night, I decided to get some UberEATS for dinner. Trawling through the usual average list of Asian food options available to Sydney's inner east, I decided to give their wonton chicken broth with egg noodles a go.

Now, being from melbourne I am generally picky and critical of Asian food quality and authenticity, which has been hard to find esp in sydneys east.

Given it was a late night takeaway, I wasn't expecting much. Boy - was I wrong! The delicious broth, coupled with tasty juicy wontons with a generous serving of greens - perfection. Chicken was cooked perfectly and a great cut of meat - pure breast only.

Can't wait to go to the actual restaurant to try their their options! Total quality and yum.

My boyfriend and I had an amazing experience here. We were here for our anniversary and they gave us free wine. Mei was really attentive and funny. The food was better than I expected at a reasonable price. Definitely revisit when I come back to Sydney!

Thai and Indian chef cooking Chinese food šŸ˜‚
Ancient Chinese decorations, food is a bit too sweet. I think it's because Thai food is always sweeter and have more sugar. Not too sure why it is marketed as Chinese food ?

Found out that they no longer have a separate vegan menu. Instead labelling vegan items v. Ordered tofu, vermicelli, soup. Was nice but for me just a bit too much Coriander. Main was char kway teow which was nice, but a bit too oily for my taste. Also ordered Roti (after reading reviews that it was the best ever). Again, too oily. However, despite the above comments it wasn't too bad and I might come back.

Love this place! Friendly staff...great food. One of those places that deserves return visits time and time again. Great atmosphere as well with interesting decor that creates a great vibe. I'm a fan!

Coming to this restaurant I was expecting high end style food due to the fancy decor of the place, with romantic dim lighting and modern Asian style decor (also, the prices on the menu was very expensive). And that is what I received, kind of. The Peking duck and the pork belly dishes were full of umami flavour and quite scrumptious, however the shiitake and tofu soup was overtly bland and ultimately disappointing. The crisp chow mein was alright, nothing above average. Overall, the restaurant doesn't stand out to me, and I would not recommend because the price of the food does not reflect the quality.

Terrible service. Have had dinner at FuManchu several times in the past and it's been great. This time the service was absolutely terrible!
We had a reservation for six and all night the staff hovered over us trying to rush us through our meal.
They brought out the side dishes 20 mins before the mains so the rice and steamed greens were cold.
They repeatedly tried to clear away plates that we were still eating off.
We ordered Sake and when they brought it to the table it was served in a dipping sauce plate, and when questioned the staff were extremely rude and told us that's how they serve sake.
Will definitely NOT go back again, and will tell friends about the appalling service.
Samuelwestbrook91
Great food, appalling service. I fully appreciate and can empathise with the front of house in trying to manage bookings but it was honestly disgraceful service. Went on a Saturday night with a group of 6, from the start the male front of house was rushing us out the door. Snatched the drink menu off us, demanded we order our mains within '10 minutes' and accused us of trying to conceal a bottle of wine to avoid the dreaded $10 corkage cost. The sake was definitely off or not right and when we raised this he told us we were wrong and didn't even attempt a faux pas apology. Food was sensational though, won't be returning any time soon though.

Wonderful food and service. The service here is brilliant. Nothing is too difficult and you feel so welcome. The food is delicious, really fresh and vibrant. Great for groups large and small. The layout keeps the big groups separate from the smaller groups so you never lose the lovely intimate feeling of the place. Been many times and will be back many more.

Chilli salt cuttlefish
Now this dish is a little star. Itā€™s like that free glass of wine you get from your favourite waitress, itā€™s the day your barista makes you that perfect morning coffee, itā€™s when that cute girl in the elevator compliments you on your tie. This is that moment - The batter is light (not the heavy bready batter) and crispy paired with chilli and of course the gorgeous cuttlefish! I love it, itā€™s beautiful.

My favourite of the yum cha dishes sampled is the Sesame Shrimp Rye Toast. The traditional version is always a hit but thereā€™s something about the introduction of rye toast that gives this an incredible flavour and the delicate fu manchu treatment makes it much less greasy.

I think this is a great spot in Darlinghurst for a decent BYO restaurant (quality pickings can be slim in the BYO department for this suburb). Service was very friendly and efficient, ambience was warm and inviting, the location is perfect for nightlife in Darlinghurst and the Cross, and prices were reasonable for the area. Three out of five dishes were winners, and the other two werenā€™t bad. Iā€™m sure I will be back for another sharey-share type meal and mayb

Not anything like Chinese food. This place caters for caucasian palates. The pork belly doesn't have any wow factor aside from the sauce and the ratio meat to bun is far from satisfying. As for the Hainan Chicken Rice, they swapped ginger for cinnamon as even the matching rice had a strong cinnamon taste. The only dish I could recommend is the duck wraps.

Opening night at the new Fu Manchu in Darlinghurst Road, a very cool Sydney restaurant, was exciting for us at sydneycool ā€“ weā€™ve always thought the old Fu Manchu space was great, if a bit cramped at times. Ā Having said that, we liked it ā€“ so to see how it would go in its new larger space was interesting ā€“ after all Fu Manchu has been around for about 15 years and that for a Sydney restaurant is amazing!!!

Reasonably priced drinks and dishes, Casual atmosphere, Open late til 10.30 pm, Brown rice available, No MSG but you might have to share communal table, Limited table space, Smallish dishes and No wine glasses.
Eat And Be Merry Crew
The balanchan chicken wings ($8 for four) didnā€™t have much flavor. I was expecting to be blown away with the shrimpy, umami flavor from the balanchan but it just wasnā€™t there. There was a whiff of savouriness to the wings but nothing to indicate that it had been marinated in balanchan. My own Vegimite roasted chicken wings have way more flavor than these wings.
Steve
Very slow service - definitely not worth the wait. Atmosphere is trendy & artistic, if I had to pick something positive to say.

A favourite local... My husband would eat the Nonya chicken every night given the option. Some other mains could be a little less oily but only a minor plea to be able to eat them more often with less guilt....
Andrew MCrae
Appalling. The food was inedible....we sent it back and they had the gall to bring the same dish back re-hashed........we gave up waiting for the rest....rude, lazy, and the portions seem to have shrunken to ridiculous levels..lost their mojo and with it a loyal customer.........I will never go back

10/10 Service. Thank you to Annie and her team who looked after us last night at dinner. We were bringing a friend down from St Vincents so it was really a special dinner for him and us. The staff were amazing, we got the best table, food was fantastic and nothing was too much trouble even though they were sooo busy. It meant a lot to us. I highly recommend and we will definitely be back.

Would not bother. Nice atmosphere, but food tends to be kind of greasy and a little sickly, also not a whole lot of options for various dietary requirements. The staff are very nice, however.
Rachel Booysen
The atmosphere was quite nice, there was 18 of us, chose the banquet. the mains were bland but I forgave because the duck and squid was so good. but I do not forgive our table having to pay $144 in corkage!!!! outrageous, $12 per bottle, my bottle of wine barely cost that much. I will not be returning.

Disappointing. This use to be a favourite place, both to eat at and order delivery from! As of late, anytime you call for home delivery, no matter how early, they tell you delivery will take from an hour and half. The serving sizes have also diminished compared to what they use to be. Missing the old service!

Great room lovely food but small portions . Great service

Mid week dinner . First time I've been since it moved to the kirkreton - great room , and though some portions small ( dumplings : 2 small dumplings ) everything was reeaaally delicious . Definitely going back ASAP

Love it - great choice. 2nd visit to Fu Manchu on Sat night, and it was fantastic. Originally my boyfriend and I were planning on going to Mr Wong for a romantic date, but were too hungry to deal with the 2 hour wait. Rocked up at 7.30pm without a booking, and got the last table, so would book if you can. Dumplings both steamed and fried, soup and chicken curry with rotti were all delicious. I really enjoy the mix of asian food on the menu. We took a nice bottle of wine, so the bill came to $55! Such great value for really delicious food. Have been here with a group of girl friends before and paid $20 a head. Will be going back soon.
Salted Caramel
Delicious. This is a real find. Good service, great flavours, tender meat. I'd go back to this one.

AVOID!!. Tried this place for a take-away...wish I hadn't. The food was luke warm/cold, the fried rice was overcooked and tasteless and the san choy bao was horrible. For 2 fried rice, 1 san choy bao and 1 pork ribs it came to $61....for tasteless gluggy food. I rang up the restaurant to give my opinion and was offered a credit...um no thanks.

Very attentive staff. Great food at affordable prices. Will definitely be back!! You won't be disappointed!

Boo hoo Fu Manchu. We saw the potential of what could have been an enjoyable new take on yum-Cha, turn into a disappointing waist of time, leaving us thirsting for tea (let alone hungering for food) which finally arrived after FOUR requests and and long after all the slim pickings were consumed from a disappointingly cut-down menu. Whilst ordering, we were continually told almost each requested item was no longer available. When food did arrive it wasn't even the quantity requested. The vapid excuse for serving staff made apologies that rang hollow. We may have turned up on a bad day, but we'll never know, as this little black duck won't be back for another attempt.

Nice new digs. I actually like the new place; the ambience is really nice. The menu has become a little scatter-gun, but the food is still pretty reliable and the service is warm and friendly. Great for a quick bite. And those duck pancakes are to die for. . .
Coffeeperson02
I'm confused about this place. Had take away twice from the last location and it was incredible. Followed them to their new place a few months back and it was just as good but the dinner we just ordered could not have been from the same chef! Portion sizes have completely downsized and the quality has definitely deteriorated. Don't think I'll be ordering from here again
Greedygreedyguts
I loved the food at the old restaurant and while the new fit out is beautiful, the meals don't add up. I had a dry, flavourless chicken rice, an overly salty beef rendang and an uninteresting fried rice. The highlight was the pork belly buns. Overall, the hefty prices are not worth it.
Symone Mei
Won't deliver to Randwick but can deliver to every suburb around and close to it! Doesn't make sense.

Fu Manchu has been in the hood for many years and I have patronized the space on and off over the time.
They have recently relocated to the Kirketon Hotel on Darlinghurst Rd and tonight was the first visit in a while.
The experience was great, the food delicious, the service efficient and friendly.
Tonight was a pleasant surprise and unexpected buzz. The music was mellow and people were there to enjoy great food. Congratulations.
VV
Cool ambience. Awesome ambience. Just tried the new venue. Food was good but not large. Host a little quirky for sure.

This place is for when you want a nice restaurant to go out to and you feel like Asian but not when you want cheap, massive, simple Asian.
Alex
Best Asian on Victoria st. The quality is the same every time - solid, tasty and generous. The girls run the place well and are always friendly.
Nelsongirl
Has never disappointed - often go for a meal after a trip to the hospital - we joke that the food is so good it could 'save lives' - reasonably priced too.
Dingo
Love it but chairs are hard. Great food, friendly staff and very efficient. However if you elect to eat in, the chairs are very uncomfortable, its truly a minor quibble, takeaway would be fantastic.
LZY
Solid but unspectacular. Summary:

Food: 6/10
Ambience: 7/10
Service:7/10
Value: 6/10
Overall: 6.5/10

Westernised Asian restaurants have come a long way in the last few years. It used to be that the dishes would be loosely inspired by the originals - now the food is actually decent.

Visited Fu Manchu for the first time last night with my gf and another couple. As you'd expect from a place on Victoria Road in Darlinghurst, it's pricier than elsewhere but the service is a (slight) step up from an actual Asian restaurant.

The menu is an odd mix of Cantonese and Singaporean/Malaysian classics with a generic selection of dumplings (as you'd find in the frozen aisle of an Asian grocery). We had the duck pancakes (roast duck, not crispy skinned peking duck), so-called Nonya chicken curry (packet sauce mix edition, or so it seemed from the taste, with ONE roti cut into quarters for all of us), , black bean pork ribs (braised in generic Lee Kum Kee sort of sauce?) and some pork and chive dumplings.

It was all reasonably good but nothing really stood out. This restaurant can't compete with actual Chinese places for food quality, and it's not trying. This is more a reflection of the location and target market than anything else. Come here if you're in Darlinghurst and you HAVE to have Asian food...but you're better off going to a fancier Chinatown place like Zilver etc.

A bad experience :(. I went to Fu Manchu for a birthday bash but it was a bit of a disaster. We ordered the banquet menu - the food was tasty enough, but there wasn't enough of it to go around and we were left hungry. It's a BYO venue but they don't provide ice buckets for white wine so we had to drink it warm. Then the bill came and they had over-charged us, adding three extra people onto the bill.

We definitely won't be going back.

Gluten-free friendly chinese!. Finally, a chinese restaurant that caters to coeliacs (they even have a separate menu http://www.fumanchu.com.au/restaurant/coeliac-menu )
This was a favourite restaurant before my diagnosis, and now I can still come here! The staff are knowledgeable and know all about the issues that normally make coeliacs sick from chinese i.e. cross contamination from woks, soy sauces, hoi sin etc.
My favourite dishes are the steamed ocean trout and their fried rice. The non g-free members of our group also highly recommend the dumplings.

Absolute best take Away ever!!! quality is just spot on!

Excellent Food and great service. The food and service at this restaurant is excelllent. We had a great time, and found the staff both attentive and extremely friendly. For two people with 3 serves, and drinks you could expect to pay around $50.
