Review Madame Nhu - Sydney

Aleksandar Antic
It was such a lovely delicious dinner. Beef curry excellent. Crispy Chicken really good! Service was fun. Girls were not so busy as it was a very quiet night so we felt like Royalty.. Thank you Madame Nhu

Service was friendly but a bit scattered Pho was tasty but served cold so lost points there Never mind the cocktails, quite average Not too bad if you're local. Better pho to be found in the city and of course out south west

Have recently changed the pho broth but say it’s still the same when asked. Smells off. Didn’t offer to check it or replace it. Not the same quality as I’ve enjoyed for the last few years.

Very average food, weird vibes and no table service. My prawn and papaya salad contained no papaya and was a dumbed down version without the sweet sour spicy complexity you would expect. It was however loaded with very hot chilli. Also most of the beers advertised on the drinks list were not available, none of the Vietnamese or Chinese beers. There are better options. Avoid.

It was good ! I ordered Seafood spring rolls, Salt and pepper squid with shallot and chilli, Meat lover's beef and chicken, Spicy meat lover's And my favorite was the Salt and pepper squid. For the Pho noodle soup what I had was a bit heavy for me. And also I preferred the spicy noodles my friend had to the noodles I had. It has much more flavor that I liked I felt like the atmosphere of the restaurant was more like a bar than a restaurant, so the food didn't go in well Anyway it was alright ! I would like to go there once again!!

THANK YOU for this AMAZING LUNCH!!! We both had the signature pho, I choose the spicy version. The meat was super good and the broth was tasty and not too salty! We loved every single bite of it. The service was perfect and polite. We also took a coconut juice which was very tasty and made for a good desert. Amazing food, amazing service, real value for money! These guys deserve a tip!!!!

The place is great/cute but I wasn't impressed by their lack of variety of food choices... And the food itself was not great anyway/either...

You get more for what you pay for. You can’t go wrong with a delicious Pho and Madame Nhu knows just how to make your tastebuds happy!

Rating 2.5 I always maintain that Vietnamese are best at an casual authentic no frills place. Madame Nhu falls into the Westernise jazzed up category. I’ve been to a couple of other outpost, not being particularly impressed. Thinking that this proper restaurant setting with better might fair better. Only just marginally. The pho with chicken & beef was rather average. The chicken were bland, brisket dried, broth so so. The wagyu with sweet potato chips (odd combo) was not too bad. I still prefer a more traditional Viet place.

⭐️⭐️⭐️

So the squid salad was amazing, but very spicy. Service was very slow, they over charged us for drinks and very warm inside. Good food at reasonable price but based on the cons would not go back.

I was surprised to find out I haven’t blogged Madame Nhu’s before. Like it’s sister restaurant Xage on Crown Street, which has now become an Asian fusion pasta bar, it’s been around for a long time, making dependably delicious Vietnamese food. If I’m alone, I’d go for the pho, but it was good to be out with a friend this particular evening, and split a serve of their delicious summer rolls, partake in their steamed chicken, and we also had an interesting dish, not pictured, with beef and crispy sweet potatoes.

I don’t mean to be rude, but maybe the person taking phone orders should be able to speak fluent English. Three time I’ve come and each time the order has been incorrect.

I loved Madame Nhu. As I approached, from the street on a wet night, it looked warm and welcoming. The decor is relaxed and inviting. The staff all smiles. I was on my own and seated at a comfy spot in the lower dining area. The place was buzzing, service was fast and always with a smile. I had the vermicelli salad with veggie spring rolls and a glass of house white. The salad was packed with flavour, the herbs looked and tasted like they’d just been picked. The net spring rolls hot, crunchy and super tasty. I’d like to up the veggies and reduce the noodles but not a big deal. Everyone looked to be enjoying their meals. I’ll return when I’m back in Sydney. Go there !

I have never eaten a better pho before. Everything were so delicious. The staff was helpful and lovely. I wish I was living in Sydney. I would go there every week.

Came here on a weekday night and omg it was still packed. At first I walked in with 3 friends and thought this restaurant was bit too small but it wasn’t actually bad. Waiters are very careful when they walk pass each table so they don’t bump into any customers. Food came out very fast even though the restaurant was full.
Would definitely come back.

Definitely a tastey broth!

Nina's pho review:

Meat 7/10
Broth 9.5/10
Noodles 6/10
Herbs 8/10
Sauce 9/10

Overall 8/10

This place deserves a return visit. Thanks for reading

This beef pho Saigon style is the bomb.com!
Beef broth was tasty, yummy and very addictive, perfect for lunch on cold Sydney day!
I choose no 23 from the menu, beef portion was generous and serving just right, not too small nor too big!
The side dish to accompanied this pho was fresh been sprouts and some Vietnamese basil leaves, wedge of lemon and green chilli.
All this condiment was goes well and basil leaves bring some more aromatic fragrance to the soup.
Place was packed during lunch time, service was quick and friendly!

This is one of those places that not only serve delicious pho but also have a cozy ambience to share a red wine with one’s friends. The staff is just lovely and their pho “collection” is full of variety. Spice level can be altered per request and the restaurant by corner has two floors for seating. It’s usually crowded during lunchtime due to offices nearby but early dinner serves as a nice night out.

Dined at Madame Nhu on a Sunday night and after a big weekend we were looking for a light and healthy dinner! Half of the restaurant was shut off with only the downstairs operating but still a fun, intimate setting! We shared fresh summer prawn rolls, banh mi chicken slider and spicy pho vegetarian option with added tofu (and asked for not too spicy). Without a doubt, the standout dish was the pho! So warming on a cold night and possibly enough for 2 to share easily! Madame Nhu has been feeding Sydneysiders since 2007 and it is easy to see why this place is so popular!
Tastypanda
Delicious, fresh and great variety. Madame Nhu is a bustling hub of life as you walk through the front door. We ordered the prawn rice rolls, lotus stem salad and slow cooked chicken with ginger rice. Would’ve been nicer if the lotus stem salad had more lotus stem, otherwise the ginger rice was the high light!

Absolutely love their pho here. I wish they delivered! It’s a very savoury tasting broth which I love, not too sweet. The spicy one I am yet to try but it looks awesome too

Comfort food, I normally had Pho at Bankstown, Flemington area. Hiding in a quite Street in Surrey Hills surprising good quality! Will come back try other dishes next time !

I have been putting off dining in this restaurant despite very positive reviews, mainly because it takes its name (and iconic imagery) from the notorious sister-in-law and wife of the brothers who ran South Vietnam and brutally oppressed majority Buddhists in the 1960s (Google her name and you'll see what I mean). However, in Surry Hills and looking for a restaurant on a Saturday night with a two-hour wait for no-booking Chin-Chin, I swallowed my principles (partly I admit because I love Vietnamese food, having been a frequent visitor there). The service was patchy, with a waitress that understood neither 'Triple-3 beer' nor 'ba-ba-ba' although both are at the top of the drinks menu. One dish was completely forgotten, the menu doesn't clearly explain what you're getting, the food (Madame's Fried Chicken, duck spring rolls) was bland apart from a prawn and papaya salad which was superb. On reflection, I should have ordered pho but when a restaurant presents itself as something exceptional, you don't really feel like the trusted old standards.
I suspect that, like many successful cafes that have decided to franchise, they may have lost sight of what made them so good to begin with. But at least they weren't offering barbecued Buddhist monk, as the real Madame Nhu once suggested. There are better Vietnamese restaurants in the city, with less insensitive associations. What next? Pol Pot Noodles?

A pleasant find. Lovely ambience at dinner on a quiet Monday night. Delicious chicken and beef noodle salads at very reasonable prices. Would definitely come back and recommend to friends.

This is a really nice Vietnamese spot for drinks and pho. I had the signature pho with grass fed beef 3 ways and pho with pork crackling which was more spicy but both were delicious. The fried chicken was also great (crunchy on the outside and juicy on the inside). And if you pay with cash, they give you a 5% discount.

This place has a great atmosphere and the staff were really efficient in getting us seated and taking our order.
We had the chicken pho and the spring roll main. It all felt very healthy! The pho was a much better dish overall. The portion size is pretty huge, I’m sure a pho could feed 2 for lunch.
We also had the pineapple and passion fruit juice which was delicious, with fresh mint and lemon in.
I’m sure we’ll be back there in the future for more pho!

Second time coming to Madame Nhu. First time has been great, that’s why my partner and I decided to invit our grand mother there. She is more than 85yo walking with a stick. Restaurant was almost empty so we asked to be seated on a table for 4 people with chairs instead of tables with wooden bench. Waiter did not let us seat on the table pretending that they were reserved for 5 or 6 people group, 10min after a group of 4 came and got seated there. It didn’t end there, his service has been terrible, he was so rude. I am not the type of person complaining but when it comes to host a 85+ person I expect a minimum of respect and hospitality. Such a pity because the other staff are lovely, food is good. I just had to put a warning on what happen that night. I won’t be coming back.

It's pretty funky and cool Vietnamese place where you can have a nice Pho or Vermicelli salad! The layout of the shop is like a normal cafe. This place is pretty busy during the weekdays as a lot of people working around this area come for a quick bite.

Having dinner with friend. Not busy night. Staffs were quite rude and did not explain the menu properly. The food was great but due to the poor service, not recommended.

No. No. No. No. No.

No.

That this place is considered a representative of Vietnamese cuisine in general is a personal affront. The beef pho, for that price, was one of the most underwhelming dining experiences I have had, period. Having eaten at practically every renowned pho restaurant in Southwest Sydney and growing up in a Vietnamese household, the bowl of pho from Madame Nhu did not even reach the level of the worst of those other experiences.

It's sad that this is what city dwellers have to think of Vietnamese food as being.

Well, I order on foodora for take away in madame nhu. The package is really thoughtful, every package is labeled with their names.

I ordered mixed summer roll and signature pho. They are both tasty. I recommend this restaurant for those who like Vietnamese.

Madame Nhu offers the best food court lunches I have ever had and their flagship restaurant in Surry Hills brings Vietnamese street food brilliance into a wonderful modernised venue. You can’t go wrong with Vietnamese food and Madame Nhu knows how to make it some of the best.

Clickety click for full review and have a great week of feasting :).

Really enjoyed this place. It has a quirky interior and is not too busy. We ordered the signature beef pho and the big bowl main. The pho was amazing, the broth was the best part and it had nice meat in it not anything dodgy. The big bowl had a mix of things: spring rolls, fish balls, duck, vermicelli noodle etc. I think this was probably my favorite meal, the duck was fantastic! For my drink I had the iced coffee/condensed milk cocktail which was quite heavy. It didn't really go with the food but it was nice on its own. Will be back!

Ordered the spicy beef pho and the spring rolls. Pho was simply amazing. The rolls were alright. It got pretty hot because of the sunlight coming in.
Lily
The beef noodles were absolutely divine! The broth was really tasty and flavourful. We ordered the spring rolls and it didn't disappoint! Casual yet nice ambience for a chilled night out.

Best pho I have ever had. Got the duck pho - and unlike other duck dishes is wasn't just all bone, yes there was some actual meat!!
A must for all!
Simon Higgins
The pho was great, but unfortunately the service was plain terrible.
A minor miscommunication about splitting bills (we weren't informed) turned into a major service catastrophe when wait staff and then management turned very aggressive.
Evidently they don't want customers to return : (

Went here last night for dinner with 4 friends, the service was great- super efficient and friendly. Wine menu is pretty limited, so go for a cocktail or beer. We tried the mixed rice paper rolls($12.50) which included lemongrass pork, duck and prawn, the duck and prawn were tasty but I felt the pork one was underwhelming as was pork mince. I would skip these next time as they are super small. Then we got the spicy beef pho($16.9)- best dish in the entire restaurant! Blown away by the tasty broth, tender beef and extras on the side to add in, think crispy pork crackling, cabbage, bean sprouts. Its not spicy but comes with hot sauce. We also got a side of the rice cooked in ginger chicken broth which was super tasty- if you have ever tried hainan chicken on rice and wonder why it tastes so good then this is why! Share the pho between two and get a few starters as the pho is huge!!! Will be back for pho- sure!

Absolutely astonished at how rude and aggressive the staff are at Madame Nhu Surry Hills. I ate with a friend there and we both missed the notes on the menu stating that they won't split bills. It was not mentioned at all by the staff when we sat down and were given menus.

When we came to pay and offered 2 cards we were subjected to rude and dismissive behaviour by the waiter and the manger. Both literally walked away from our table when we suggested things like cancelling the bill and setting up 2 bills. Neither seemed to have any sort of hospitality training whatsoever. At one point our discussion descended into a shouting match.

Only eat at this restaurant if you are looking for average at best Vietnamese cuisine and incredibly rude service. In a city with great courteous asian dining, they won't last long. Thanks goodness!

Amazing Pho - the best in Sydney. Their rice paper rolls are beautiful and light, it's definitely my favourite Vietnamese venue in the city. Their in-house white wine is also great for the price! Great service, very fast.

I've been to Madame nhu 5-6 times since I moved to Sydney last year and I found their pho (one of my favourite Vietnamese dishes) always quite good plus the location is really convenient. However this is the second time I'm really disappointed by costumer service, so much so that I left the place tonight. I have been there twice (before I had the first bad service experience) for a regular friend-meeting and I brought wine for my meal without paying any fee (maybe corcage?). Tonight, when I got there with a bottle of wine the waiter in a rude and irrespectfull way underlined that I had to pay $25 dollar for it and that it was impossible that I did byo before because they have NEVER allowed it, making me look like I was dreaming. I don't know whether I had a special treatment the previous times or the actual rules have changed but what I know it's that I decided to come back because the location is really convinient for an after work meal but they can be sure they won't see me there anymore. The pho isn't good enough to justify the rude verbal diarreah coming from this 'waiter'

Came here a year ago and loved it, so was pretty disappointed with the all-round meal I got recently. I got the duck bao for starter and the beef brisket pho for main. Both were pretty average with not much flavour. Won't be rushing back as there are plenty of other good Vietnamese places near by.
Simply Starving
Cute place in the middle of Surry Hills. The ambiance is brilliant but the food lacks flavour. The pho is overpriced and caters for a very westernised palate. Would love if the dishes had some more chilli and stronger flavours. Service was delayed.
AC
Decent pho but very bad experience and will not go again!
We asked specifically if their duck broth pho had beef stock as a base because one of us don't eat beef for religious reasons. Was told there is no beef. After finishing the meal another waiter told us it contains beef as all their soups use the same stock base and that he did not want to lie to us.
The RnB Diary
A tiny hole in the wall Vietnamese restaurant around corner from Nomad. I visited twice and both times ordered the same dishes - beef pho and a stir fried chicken dish. They were both marvellous. You do pay a bit more for pho than in the city but that's just Surry Hills price tag for you. In return you get better ambience and services. Staff were very friendly and dining atmosphere was better than the dingy restaurants in Chinatown.

This is a great little spot with good food and friendly service. There's not much to be said that hasn't already been said, but the beef pho had good flavour and generous ingredients. All dishes we tasted were fresh, however the consensus at the table was that the chicken pho was a little bland. Particularly considering it had tasted better in the past, so I'm not sure what happened there.
The menu selection is very solid and the prices are good for Surry Hills but not not spectacular if you're accustomed to Marrickville or Cabramatta pho prices.
Oh be sure to check out the cocktail list also which is quite impressive!

My partner and I love eating at Madame Nhu's. We always have the pickle, which is slightly different every time, but never disappoints. It just keeps getting better.!
& my favourite dish on the menu is the Squid salad, the ginger rice is also really good with big pungent chunks of ginger still in there. It packs a punch mmm mm.
Easy fast dinner with pleasant service and great fresh, healthy food.
They also serve Pho, which I am yet to try. Next time...
Food Obsessed
Look I've had pho for 99c in Vietnam and the Indian in me is ruined because nothing tastes as good as good value but this is a funky little upmarket Vietnamese joint in foodie hipster town (no not Melbourne). It's tiny with wooden seats and tin cans as chopstick holder so you get the vibe. I got the spicy pho. I can't handle spice so the amount was perfect. I also had the Vietnamese coffee because I feel like all coffee should come with condensed milk and allow me to see through time. Great place to go eat, be a foodie and be satisfied
The Lisa Marie Foodie Adventures
This is a fantastic hidden gem in Surry hills, the restaurant is very small and intimate, with low neon lighting.

The service is fast and efficient, the staff know their menu. I had the rump steak pho and the passionfruit, mint and lemon soda.

The pho broth was strong and flavourful, the rump steak fresh and easy to chew. There wasn't enough chilli in the little side plate given but that's easy to fix. The rice noodles were not soggy but there wasn't a lot of noodles in the actual meal.

I still really enjoyed the flavour given by the broth which I heard is prepared in a special way and the soda was so refreshing !

All in all I really like this place :)

Sister date night took us to Madame Nhu in Surry hills. Had this one bookmarked on zomato because of their good reviews and ratings and craving viet it was an easy decision.

Firstly the resturants is just so pretty. Dimly lit and with nature features covering the ceiling it was very tranquil and had a great energy.

It was very busy and full but we where seated straight away at a bar table near the kitchen. Menus where given to us right away but being prepared foodies we already had our food picked ☺

I ordered the steamed chicken and subbed the rice for steamed veggies and my sister had the beef pho and passionfruit soda.

The food came fairly quickly. The flavours were great. Herbs.. spices and texture all on point. The sizes where perfect. And the prices reasonable $40 for 2 people.

Staff were very friendly and professional.

Will definitely be back to this place for my surrey hills viet cravings ☺
Those Who Love To Eat
From memory, I remember Madame Nhu to be better than this time around. Anyways, came here on a Saturday evening and it was quite empty, but did fill up after a little while. We ordered an entree of chicken wings which felt a little dry on the palate, the chicken rice seems moist and delicious, and the signature pho hit the spot. We accompanied our meal with their cocktail which didn't really live up to its expectation. Ironic thing was... It was a paper tiger after all.
Whilst the service was pleasant and the food decent, I'm not so sure I would be in a great hurry to return to Madame Nhu, perhaps if I was already in the neighbourhood and it so happen to be convenient to grab something to eat, otherwise, I think I would take the taste bud else where before coming here again. Such a shame! This place had real high hopes.

One word..... WOW !!!

Absolutely sensational Pho and sides, service was amazing; friendly and fast.

Prices are extremely reasonable and value for money
Trent Carslake
Loved the food but they don't split the bill and they charged us 3% to use a card!!!! It cost me $5 to pay with card!!! Who uses cash these days?!?!
Pollo_pesce_me
Another Surry Hills restaurant that doesn't live up to its hype. I’m not exactly sure why it is but my recent visits to Surry hills restaurants has been constant disappointment. I love Vietnamese food and pho but I found many Vietnamese places hardly make great chicken pho. I think beef or seafood is not a problem but when it comes to chicken not many restaurant can make perfectly clean flavored chicken pho. (There are few can in Cabramatta/Bankstown/Epping area) Unfortunately this place didn't quite make it to that list. Broth wasn't clear and chicken had that reheated smell.
Other than pho we also ordered chicken wings, spring rolls, prawn rice paper rolls, chicken slider and chicken salad. I found the prawn rice paper roll to be overly salty and chicken wing tasted like it was reheated in the microwave. Chicken salad was pretty good and the winning dish of the night was chicken slider. The restaurants decor and ambiance is quite nice and service was good. I also ordered Madam Nhu special iced tea and this was just way too sweet, was simply not drinkable, perhaps people with sweet tooth might enjoy this drink?. Total bill was $94 as you would expect in Surry Hills pricing. Next time I feel like Vietnamese food, I would travel west.

Awesome looking little restaurant close to Central but tucked away enough to be secluded. The place is quite small so you may need to squeeze in. The food is pretty decent not the most amazing pho I've ever had. This may be because I'm use to a more traditional flavoured pho. They have Many different types of pho e.g. Duck Pho which is worth a try if you feel adventurous. I had your basic Pho Tai which was served with wagyu rump. It didn't taste any different to what I got at any other pho place which I thought was really disappointing considering it was about ~$17 for it. We also ordered Caramelised Chicken which was more stewed and braised then caramelised which was really disheartening. Their white coffee was good but again not quite as good as the traditional version. Overall it was a decent shot at a modern take on pho but I think I'll just stick to my $10 pho from Cabra/Bankstown/Eastwood.

One of my favourite Vietnamese. I swear I must have been Vietnamese in my precious life. Pho is probably one of my favourite foods and I eat it often. And this is one of my 'go to' places for pho. I love the thick cut Tasmanian brisket version which is different from the typical rare beef version you see everywhere else. Comes in a broth that has a depth that is lacking in so many other places. Delicious!
Ho Hum
DODGY! Upon arriving I asked if they accepted EFTPOS and was told "yes". After I ate, I went to pay and was told by the same person who served me and told me they accepted EFTPOS that they only did so for orders over $20.00 (mine was $12.50 for a bowl of pretty bland beef pho). She told me that I could walk down the street to a pub and get cash out there for a $2.50 ATM fee or that I could buy another meal now and come back later to eat it. Talk about a dodgy up sale tactic!!! I elected to go to the pub and not buy into their questionable business practices and to add insult to injury, the server requested that I leave my drivers license with her presumably because she didn't trust that I'd come back! I have no idea what these people are thinking about but its obvious they aren't thinking about customers or return business. Stay far, far away from this dodgy place.

A winter dinner catch-up with my sister called for Pho. Good opportunity to finally try Madame Nhu. The Surry Hills shop is small and cosy, and service is efficient in order to keep tables turning. We tried the Phở nạm beef with tender thick-cut Tasmanian grass-fed brisket. I ordered mine without noodles, and it came with veggies instead. Yes, price is higher than average but quality is great.

The ambience was great for a couple coming for lunch. Nice cozy warm feeling to the restaurant. The food good but westernised the only downfall would be the serving size with the meats provided in the dish.
Samantha
The Beef Brisket Pho is quite nice however the portion size you get for what you pay is on the smaller size. The broth is quite flavoursome and you get the usual accompaniment of chillies, lemon, mint, bean sprouts to add in to your liking. The smell of the pho is so strong that when you leave the smell will transfer onto you! The interior is quite beautiful and the fairy lights are a nice touch.
Andrew Lovelaguna Chan
Dishes were very basic Vietnamese food that one could easily replicate at home. I don't understand what the hype about the restaurant is all about. We had the fried chicken (which was the best dish), salad, tofu and the calamari, all easily forgettable. However I wouldn't mind coming back for the pho. They look amazing. Maybe that's the dish that brings in the people.

{ _anne_with_an_e // review }
We came here on a rainy cold Winter’s night so it was fitting to order a bowl of pho each. I think the weather may have deterred the crowd a little, so it wasn’t as busy as it usually is. But there were still a good stream of people coming and going to this little corner establishment.

We were a little disappointed to be told the entree chicken wings were sold out. But found it a little strange considering the restaurant had only opened about 1 and a half hours before we arrived.

So we ordered the nem nướng grilled chicken skewers, grilled pork baby banh mi, their signature đặc biệt phở, and phở of roasted duck.

I had the signature đặc biệt phở and the thick cuts of beef were absolutely soft and delicious! Next time I’ll order a whole bowl! My noodles were generous and silky. Enjoyable to eat! However, the roast duck pho had minimal noodles and were struggling to find any in the bowl.

The nem nướng was tasty, but the pork banh mi was a bit of a let down. It was truly tiny and expensive for the size, and although the bread roll was nice, it kind of ended there.

It was a little difficult flagging someone down to take our order at first. But the rest of the night was pleasant, the staff were efficient and really friendly.

Must haves // signature đặc biệt phở
Also try // nem nướng grilled chicken skewers
Next to try // phở nạm beef with tender thick-cut Tasmanian grass-fed brisket, Madame's fried chicken

Food: 3.5/5
Ambience: 3.5/5
Service: 4/5
Love Food.
Good food. Pho is unreal. But serious rising damp issue recently means not a nice as once was. Would go back but wouldn't take friends or clients.

#kningjaeats classic Vietnamese dishes. Pickle your appetite with Vietnamese flavours at the small corner restaurant and decorated with a magical interior in fairy lights of course. Refresh your palette with traditional Vietnamese flavours whether it be rice paper rolls, vermicelli salad or warm bowl of pho.

Tried it. Food good, hygiene questionable, service Poorer than poor. NGB (Not going back).. So my partner and I decided to give Madame Nhu's in Surry Hills a go as we'd been trying out a few places in the area for lunch. Well we discovered that although the food was actually nice the customer service left much to be desired. Not only did my partner receive the incorrect dish (he ordered Beef brisket Pho but was given a chicken Pho, which they later corrected), I found a small worm (still alive) in my chicken skewer vermicelli salad! Since it was towards the end of the meal, we decided to take the plate containing the worm (gross!) which was sitting on a mint leaf to show the staff when we went to pay. We showed the worm on the leaf to one of the male staff members who took the plate out to the back/kitchen and came back a minute later with the mint leaf still on the plate but no longer with the worm on it, and asked us what was wrong! So clearly he went and threw/washed out the worm and then proceeded to imply that there was no worm in the first place! We explained to him that there was a worm on the leaf before but he pretended not to know what we were talking about. So not only was he underhanded in his actions, he of course did not appologise (of course because there was nothing to appologise for remember? Cos there was no worm remember??!?!). He then proceeded to charge us for the full cost of the meals and when I complained about it, he rudely justified it by saying "did you not eat and enjoy the meal?" Now I am not asking to get a free meal, I can afford a $13 salad! But if a customer is dissatisfied/ concerned about a certain aspect of their meal (like a little extra unwanted protein in their food!!), the very least the staff could have done was appear to be sorry about it, pretend to be empathetic or say it wont happen again and some places go as far as not charging for that dish or giving a discount or doing SOMETHING to placate the situation. He didn't do any of that! He got rid of the worm and pretended it didn't exist and then proceeded to be blatantly rude about the situation. I'm not saying you shouldn't go there because like I said the food was ok but I'm just letting you know of my experience. And for me, there are way too many amazing places to dine in the Surry Hills area for me to not stress about where I'm going to eat next - ones with good service and which have not disappointed me hygiene-wise, so you can guarantee that my partner and I will not be eating there again!

Madame Nhu is in a small split-level space in Surry Hills which chef/owner Nhu Nguyen designed herself and calls “a work of love”. A mural emblazoned with the phrase “eat phở, drink beer” decorates the outer dining room and was painted by Nhu’s husband Minh (who is also the chef at Xage).

Fantastic vibe, small place with excellent fresh food and cocktails. Staff friendly, overall a brilliant experience.

Dinner at Madame Nhu ... super love herbs the Vietnamese cuisine uses ... so fresh and fragrant, which livens up the dish -- The Food -- BBQ duck fillet summer rolls with hoisin sauce The duck in the rolls is quite tender. The basil leave inside brings a fresh flavour to the dish. When dipped into the hoisin sauce, the dish becomes more vibrant. A very refreshing entree. Grilled Beef, vermicelli, chilli line vinaigrette Another refreshing entree. The chilli brings a kick to the dish, which instantly wakes me up The grilled beef is quite tender, juicy and tasty. The vinaigrette is not to heavy but flavoursome Caramelised slow- cooked chicken Even thought chicken was slow cooked, slightly overcooked to a dry texture. The sauce moistens up the dish and adds flavour to the chicken Signature duc biet pho This was probably the star of the 4 dishes. The flavours of the soup was well balanced -- not too salty but with a hint of sweetness. The beef was tender and full of flavour. The serving

Madame Nhu is bringing old Saigon to Sydney. This tiny Vietnamese eatery will take you back in time to sample all the Vietnamese street food. Coincidentally it is the hottest cafe (day)/bar (night) in Surry Hills.

...we had a cute dinner at Madam Nhu where we merrily sipped away at pinot gris and consumed fresh summer rolls, tofu and too many dishes that I TeHe (and others) diligently ordered whilst I was chatting away with Cwilson. Located just a short walk away from Central station, Madam Nhu is tucked away on a little corner that strikes me as odd that I haven't seen it before. After walking in with a gang of 8 with no reservations, we briefly lingered at bar stools before we were given a table and left to inspect the drink and food menus. Unfortunately we had gone on a Monday, so cocktails were unavailable, but in true classy fashion we all felt like some white wine and went along with a bottle of pinot gris. BBQ duck fillet summer rolls with hoisin sauce Amongst a flurry of summer rolls, we got the BBQ duck fillet summer rolls with hoisin sauce, salad summer rolls w/ ho

D2D is more adventurous and orders something different from last Wednesday. In fact, it’s so different – he’s ordered DUCK pho! I snuck a few tastes of the soup and it’s very different – a strong duck flavour which has less of the sweetness of the beef pho.

Madame Nhu is an upmarket Vietnamese restaurant with a great range of mainly Vietnamese style street food along with some outstanding pho. They offer some of the best Vietnamese food at reasonable prices close to the CBD. The dimly lit restaurant interior is small with a number of tables and stools scattered around. While the interior is modern and clean it maintains certain elements which add an authentic feel to this modern Vietnamese eatery. Interior well stocked bar Since it was a cold night we decided to try the pho and opted for the Signature đặc biệt phở, grass-fed beef prepared three ways ($15.90). The broth was addictive and had a well defined flavour. The range of subtle spices which are added to the 8 hour broth adds a nice element of flavour to the tender thick-c

After our second wedding dance lesson, K and I walked over to Madame Nhu , just one of the growing group of modern Asian eateries that take traditional dishes and serve them in a funkier bar establishment, appealing to inner-city hipsters. The food isn’t necessarily the highlight in these places – it’s just a nice addition to a cool dimly lit drinking establishment. Unlike the other groups there who had clearly settled in for the night with a range of nibbles and a multitude of drinks on the table, K and I were just there for a quick dinner at the bar before heading home. Having just turned 28, I claim that I’m too old for a late night…but the truth is, I’m just a homebody at heart! We took our seats at the bar as all the individual tables were taken. That was fine with us – it afforded us a great view into the kitchen, and the only downside was that we were situated a bit too close to the lavatories which, judging by the occasional smells drifting out every time the doors were opened, were in need of a good bleaching and cleaning! Soda chanh day passionfruit, fresh lemon and mint, $6 We ordered a passionfruit, lemon and mint soda to share, as we were both feeling quite thirsty after our strenuous activities on the dancefloor. Unfortunately the ‘passionfruit’ was faint if at all present. I consoled myself with the fact that although we didn’t quite get the passionfruit that we ordered, we were at least enjoying a really nice house-made lemonade with a twist of mint. Grilled lemongrass pork summer rolls with green chilli, $9.50 The grilled pork rice paper rolls came out to our table within two minutes of placing our order, so I can only presume that they’re pre-made rather than wrapped fresh. You can taste the difference as well, as the rice paper had turned a bit hard and chewy. The lemongrass pork was very tasty though, and went well with the fresh veggies inside, especially when dipped in the green chilli dip. Mixed pickles, $6.90 When K first looked up the menu a

If you follow me on instagram, you have probably realised I’ve been to Madame Nhu quite a few times… I LOVE IT THERE!! The first time I visited was very soon after I returned from a holiday in Vietnam…I was missing the food, and their Vietnamese drip coffee…my friends and I heard of Madame Nhu and decided to try…I was impressed!! From then on, I returned many times, trying all their different dishes, from their pho, to hainan chicken rice and vermicelli salad…all AMAZING…and I must finish off my meal with their vietnamese coffee … Their food, especially pho, is very different from an original authentic Vietnamese restaurant from like Cabramatta…it’s definately more quality in the ingredients, and tastes slightly different and rich…You know as soon as you put the food in your mouth, you are eating good quality stuff! Apart from the food there, it’s perfect place to just chill on the weekend or even for drinks after work…they have sooooo many varie

There is already a Madame Nhu located in The Galeries that is very popular with Sydneysiders, the difference between the two restaurants is that the more recently opened one in Surry Hills is open everyday for dinner until 10pm and the menu also differs slightly. Decor is modern and ambience is relaxed, lighting is low and dimly lit with tea-light candles giving off a romantic low-key vibe.

Sister restaurants to Xage on Crown Street, Madame Nhu recently opened in Surry Hills also featuring delicious Vietnamese food. We’ve been a few times now and haven’t had a dish we didn’t like.

From the same people behind Xage restaurant on Crown Street, Madame Nhu occupies a small, tiered space on the corner of Campbell and Foster Streets, directly opposite Bar H . Despite an extensive pho noodle soup offering, of which I'll have to try next time, we elected a few lighter options like the Vietnamese pork sausages from the snacks menu. The skewered portions of the sweet, porky sausage highlighted with fragrant lemongrass flavours would make for a great bar snack, wrapped in leaves of butter lettuce and dipped into the sweet nuoc mam style sauce with chilli. Fruit soda (left) and young coconut juice (right) With a decent range of non

Really bad customer service, stay away!. While the food here is cheap and good, the customer service is really bad. We took a friend for a birthday lunch there and the plates of those of us who had finished eating first were taken away before the others had finished and made those who were still eating, feel like they had to race and rush. A small thing, but then combined with what happened at the end of the meal, it really combined to be a terrible customer service experience overall..

When we went to pay at the end, the person who was manning the till was incredibly bitchy and rude when we asked if we could split the bill. He slapped the menu down in front of us and said NO SPLIT BILLS IT SAYS IT HERE, AND HERE AND HERE jabbing his finger. We'd not been there before and hadn't realised that this was so. He was so aggressive about it, I guess they have had lots of people ask to do the same thing - which begs the question, would it really kill them to provide this service when it's clearly wanted?! We did a quick regroup and then asked if we could put it on eftpos he snapped that it was a 3% charge for Eftpos. Wow - that's a hefty charge that is more than what the bank would charge the restaurant, so that on top of him snapping at us in the first place! Their customer service is terrible and far outweighs the nice food.

There are heaps of fantastic other restaurants in the area that you would much better spending your money at!

Excellent food. Excellent service. Flavorful food and fresh. I would definitely pho back

Pho Sure. If you are after a quick bowl of pho made with fresh ingredients look no further. The Spicy chicken is a winner and the pho stock is delicious!

Vietnamese for beginners. I don't want to be too negative in this review and will actually focus on the positives; the setting is lovely, the service is decent and the drinks list considerable. Indeed as the majority positive review indicates, there is much to love about Madame Nhu.
However, focussing on the food - and more specifically the phô, it is not that good. It's fine, and if you've never had a bowl of the vietnamese signature noodle soup you could be forgiven for thinking it was quite good. Though with some experience in the field, it's nothing special despite the origins of the ingredients and the menu that includes the single digit only after the decimal in the price (a staple for overrated food). As a cute little bar & eatery it's great, but if you trail love phô and vietnamese food in general, chances are you already know somewhere better.

Friend & Pho. Best Pho in Sydney, great service, pork sausage was incredible. Solid 10/10 for Pho.

Great place, lighting a bit dark. Went here for dinner, and ordered MFC (Madame's Fried Chicken) and my SO ordered spicy pho. He enjoyed his pho (although mentioned it wasn't enough for him). The fried chicken was crunchy, soft and great - wasn't oily at all, and I didn't feel really unhealthy after I finished it. Atmosphere was good, but the lighting was a bit dark, which bugged me a little. Otherwise was a great place :)

This place is great, fabulous food (crispy spring rolls and calamari are a must!) and friendly, attentive service. Can't wait to go back!

Little hidden gem. Found this little place by accident. And what a find!! We went back 2 days later to try more of the menu. Very fast, very yummy. Bustling with people, noise and aromas. Highly recommend for a quick delicious meal!

What a find! A Vietnamese oasis amongst so many greasy spoon Vietnamese/Thai/noodle anonymous wannabes. The duck salad was fragrant and delicious; the prawn papaya salad had more than a handful of prawns and flavours to please the palate. It is pretty, super clean, with lovely service and a small but satisfying wine list. Delightful

Loved the slow cooked chicken with the ginger rice. Very reasonably priced. Make sure you book if you want a table for dinner. Becoming really popular. Nice service too!

100% happy customer. Romantic ambiance, great friendly staffs and most of all, the food was amazing. Never had such authentic pho as madame nhu's. 10/10 experience!!

Beautiful aroma. Went back to Madame Nhu for a second time on Thursday with a girlfriend and had a lovely evening. Such a pretty little authentic Vietnamese with delicious fresh decent-sized portions, adorable waiters and good value for money.
Simple bar stool wooden table set up and cute fairy lights.

Go for the summer rolls, squid papaya salad or noodle soup.
Chicken skewers are a little odd as more fried balls.

Good for date night or healthy dinner with the girls.

This was the best Vietnamese food I've had outside of Vietnam. I cannot recommend this place highly enough.

Loved this place. Took a recommendation from a friend, and walked in, and immediately loved it. Small, full of charm, everyone looking happy and chatting, but the aroma almost made me faint. The smells of cooking Pho broth's from the kitchen was just incredible. I know that is a funny thing to note, but this restaurant smells so good. That being said, we were just there for cocktails and maybe a small plate or two, and my dining partner said screw it, we need to order pho. We ordered the duck spring rolls, which were outstanding, and then I ordered the fried chicken, and it was shockingly good. Crisp, spicy, not the least bit greasy, and came with a wonderful array of pickled veggies to cut the fat. I tasted the Pho, and as much as I loved the fried chicken, I went back the very next day for lunch, just so I could have my own bowl of Pho. THe servers were very sweet and unobtrusive as well. Very fun, very tasty, I loved this place.

Got the three way beef pho. Was very nice. Decor has been done before but the place is extremely clean! Imagine combining misschu and an Vietnamese version of el loco and sprucing things up. There was chic/lounge music playing during weekday lunch though which was a bit weird.

Don't take credit card, despite the menu stating 1% surcharge. Makes it hard to pay on business!

This place is amazing!! It has just recently opened.. The decor is clean and cool.. And the service is outstanding. Not to mention the food.. We had rice paper rolls, pho and beef salads. Yum! We are from Melbourne.. And would love one to open there! Will definitely be coming back when next is sydney. 10/10!
