Review 2042 Cafe - Sydney

Suan Yeo
Came for a brunch, relatively easy to get a table. Food was just ok, I recall it being much better and busier a few years ago. Wagyu hash had hardly any Wagyu in it, beef brisket burger was just ok. Croque madame was the only thing we really enjoyed. Only 1 waitress for about 10 tables of guest's, so service was a little slow. So many other options on King Street, I doubt we'll be back.

Friendly and attentive service. After spending ages looking at the menu cos everything just sounds so nice we ended up getting the scotch eggs and the salmon tacos and loved both. The tacos were fresh tangy and had 2 large pieces of salmon fillets perfectly cooked. Will definitely need to come back again to try all the other things on the menu!

I like the layout. Spacious and layback. Nice vibe. Coffee good too. Ordered the Three Little pigs, which was a plate of pork, pork and more pork without a lot of other flavours to cut through it at all. I like good black pudding but it was a bit dried out and bland. I'll skip it next time for something else. Others liked their dishes though. The only other criticism was the time it took between ordering and coffees/plates on the tables. Probably 10 min for the coffees, 30 min for the mains.

Maybe it was a once off considering the other good reviews, but I found this place revolting. Stale bread, overcooked scrambled eggs, nothing was good. And the waiter seemed stoned, he just wasn't with it. So, sorry but no thanks. Plenty of other places to enjoy nearby. Oh and the truck fumes and noise shredded the last of the experience of this place.

Love love love this place. The breakfasts are standard fare like eggs benedict, but the execution is faultless. Fresh, beautiful ingredients and cooked perfectly. For lunch, try the pulled pork sandwich. Huge pile of pork with coleslaw on fresh, crusty bread. Yum!

Been here previously and quite enjoyed the food. However, just ordered a chicken burger with fries and apple cinnamon smoothie and they were both disappointing. Apple smoothie was not cold, couldn't taste the apple and was kind of nauseating. Chicken breast was dry, and some brown avocado was fanned on the top of my bun. Expected better for $22. Disappointing.

Forgot our order. 3 other tables that arrived after us had their food delivered first. After 45 minutes of waiting, both orders were wrong. The double pancakes came out as a single. The other breakfast item was missing the Rosti side. We were given an excuse 'another table ordered Paella' this does not explain the 3 tables that ordered after us getting their breakfast orders. We were offered additional free coffees but did not have time to wait for these. Paid in full for the meals minus the forgotten items. No attempt was made to actually reduce the bill for slow service /forgotten order. A very poor brunch experience for average food.

Breakfast was amazing! I ordered the Avocado Scotch Eggs and what came out was something out of this world. It was a poached egg inside of an avocado, wrapped in crispy bacon. The service was also amazing, with the waiter very attentive and personable.

Used to love going to this place before it changed hands but it’s really gone downhill ever since. Our experience today was particularly disappointing - the coffee was weak, the food was super slow despite it not being too busy, there was plastic in the hummus, no dukkah in the dukkah salad, and the waiters didn’t know which breads were which when handling out the French toast. It was just a big let down. That being said, they did discount the meal by 30% which was very appreciated.

2042 is a really spacious cafe in the heart of newtown with a really standard breakfast menu. However, I do not recommend coming here on really hot days as they appear to lack air conditioning. The smoked salmon benedict were nothing special. The hollandaise was pretty good but one egg slightly overcooked whilst the other's yolk was completely solid, making them really not ideal for a benedict. The mushroom paella was very substantial and filling. Unfortunately, the peas were slightly undercooked but overall the flavours worked well together, with the lemon adding a zesty flavour to it.

2042 is a spacious neighbourhood cafe in Newtown which offers a variety of conventional breakfasts. The huge cafe on the southern section of King Street is fitted with wooden floors and black stools and the menu is presented neatly on the side wall.<br/><br/>Before I found myself a seat, the virtually empty cafe was in disarray - dirty and I cleaned tables with bits and crumbs on the floor. The service team “noticed” and cleaned up immediately. <br/><br/>I started my day with a banana shake - The banana shake was insipid and appeared to be mixed from a package rather than grounded using fresh bananas. <br/><br/>The eggs benedict with smoked salmon, was a different problem. The poached eggs were half-boiled eggs with gluey egg whites rather than a solid egg white with flowing egg yoke. Hence, the eggs benedict became really watery. The raw and dry spinach was unexpected too.

Great food and staff!<br/><br/>We had the Wagyu hash and Reuben sandwich. Both were delicious and the portion size was great as well. Definitely worth the visit.<br/>

The worst lunch ever. Pork belly was disgusting and all fat. Stuffed up our order twice and waiting time was ridiculous for what was served. Watered down juice. <br/>Not good, would not recommend if you want some edible food. <br/>
Beth
The food was nice and tasty here, however I order the waffles and received ONE waffle on a plate. ONE tiny waffle for $15, I was appalled. Mind you the waffle was delicious, but come on guys.

What happened to this cafe? We waited 50 minutes for any food to appear. Looking around the cafe there were only 2 tables which received food and the other 11 tables had no food. What's going on in your kitchen 2042? Food when it finally came after an hour was mediocre and definitely not worth the wait. Service appalling as waitresses forgot my order...THREE TIMES. Won't be going back.

Food was great. Unique flavours. Staff are kind and helpful. Food came out quick. Has toilets.<br/>I ordered the Lamb on Flat Bread and the Pork Belly Salad.

My favourite little place to study and grab a chai latte and brownie. I sit here for hours and I suppose the staff don't mind at all! The wifi is fast and staff are very friendly! The atmosphere is great - airy and spacious. Sometimes there are a few pesky flies and small insects flying around though..<br/><br/>I had the Grains and Seeds salad the other day with 2 slices of sourdough which was super delicious and a very generous serve (A great improvement from last year? Did they change management?)! It was a little oily (too much dressing?) but still delicious. Would recommend for my vegan friends out there. Prices are reasonable (still expensive) but I guess relative to all the other cafes at Newtown. <br/><br/>I had the cauliflower dish as well as the porridge previously which I wasn't a fan of but maybe if this salad had been improved, the other dishes would be too? Keen to try them again next time!

Atrocious service. Waited 15 minutes after being ask to find a seat for any service. We felt bad for the one waitress on staff who looked stressed so we were patient. Eventually she took our order and answered a question about an ingredient after consulting with the chef and said it shouldn't be long. We then waited another 45 minutes before being told that the kitchen was closed and neither our food or coffees were coming. We also saw those around us left without service and being brought the wrong orders. Hire more people or have those rostered on know what they are doing. We won't be back.

Talk about delicious food and excellent service. I also got my $50 back because I used Liven App. The place is great! I won't mind eating here every week!! Makes me hungry just thinking about it

We had lunch here. It has lots of seating area inside and outside. The place was quite busy being Sunday lunch time. Table service was fast. They actually have quite a good list of options for drinks from smoothies, fresh juices, hot drinks and wine. Being a hot day we went for a fresh juice which was a combination of orange, carrot and ginger.<br/><br/>For mains I went for the seafood paella without the chorizo while my husband went for the mushroom paella. It took a while for it to come but to be fair they do mention it will take 20 mins. Both of them came in hot skillets. Mine had a combination of prawns, calamari, octopus and a lot of chicken. While the mushroom had lots of Swiss brown mushrooms and enoki mushrooms. My only issue was too much chicken. Both tasted really good and good portion sizes. The seafood paella cost 24$ and the mushroom cost 22$.<br/><br/>The entire meal cost us 60$. Would definitely go back to try the breakfast menu which looked equally good.
Thefoodbotherer
Haven't been here for a couple of years however whenever I did it delivered decent food and coffee offerings. Usually a selection of artwork you can buy on the walls plus they had Pantry items you could purchase for home.

I ordered the Taco Trio - salmon , pork belly and slow cooked lamb. It was awesome, slightly crispy but soft centered tacos, really tasty meat and fresh, vibrant salads. However the serving was so small and it was a bit pricey. It was an entree for a mains price. I mean I wouldn't complain if I was out for dinner and planned on eating a few courses.. But I just dropped in for a quick lunch.<br/>But that said, it was really, really good.<br/>I'd come back for dinner and splurge on a few things one day.<br/>Service was a bit dry though, staff seemed disinterested.

Disappointed with the service, food and coffee. When I walked in, I was the only customer there. Noticed the guy behind the counter chatting to a friend, spent more time talking to her than tending to me, the sole customer at the time. I stood and waited for a minute before he acknowledged me. Started making my coffee, and continued talking to her and I waited around so I can pay. Decided I'll pay after so took a seat. He didn't even bother to ask if I wanted eat in or takeaway, just assumed it was a takeaway coffee.  The ham was bad, chewed on it and spat it out. Aside from that, the coffee was no good and the breakfast substandard. I can tell the people who worked there did not really care. No casual friendliness at all. <br/>However, he charged me less because I mentioned the ham. And the Wifi was great! Spent my time working for 2 hrs.

Ahh, 2042. What fond memories I have of this cafe. It was one of the first cafes that I ever visited, which subsequently sparked the foodie in me; and was the venue for several enjoyable catch-ups and delightful first dates. I found myself here again one Sunday after yoga with Bez, who lived just around the corner. Having never visited on a weekend, I was surprised to see the cafe so busy but we managed to find a spot by the wall and began perusing the extensive menu.<br/> <br/><br/>Ever an eggs girl, I ordered the fried eggs with hummus on sourdough. There is nothing to say about this dish aside from that it was tasty, substantial and cheap at $14, without being as boring as avocado on toast. I was utterly satisfied and full, which was a feat considering that I hadn't eaten since 8 am and it was well past midday by that stage.<br/><br/>I also ordered the apple cinnamon smoothie, because there is nothing quite like a cold refreshing smoothie after a hot yoga class. They were definitely not stingy with either the apple or the cinnamon, which made for a marvellous, delicious drink. The smoothie arrived before my food did, and I was at a very real risk of slurping up the entire drink before getting a chance to try my food. Although it was served in a standard milkshake cup, it was very generous for the $6.50 price. I couldn't have asked for anything more.<br/><br/>There is no doubting: 2042 is truly a local gem.

I enjoyed brunch at 2042 this morning for the first time. My friend and I both thought our dishes were delicious. The atmosphere is warm and spacious, and the staff are friendly and accommdating. Will definitely be back.
Eatwithmyfoodsafari
Came here for some coffee and also had a snack. It is a nice casual cafe/restaurant. There are some comfy couches on one side where you can take in some hot beverages whilst people watching or have a proper meal on the dining side with the regular dining tables and chairs. <br/><br/>Service was really nice and friendly. I had a Mocha and Shoestring Fries With Rosemary And Chilli Salt. We were kindly offered some aioli so had that too. The mocha was nice. The fries were delicious with the flavoured salt. It hit the spot!

I've been here several times and I am always happy with the service and food! <br/>I have recommended this place and have even brought people here. <br/>Best eggs benedict! 👌🏻
Kim
This place is fabulous. <br/>It is the best service I've had in a very long time, the atmosphere is perfect but most importantly - the food. <br/>Freshest & tastiest meal I have had in a long time, it really was to die for!
The RnB Diary
Most friendly service, awesome menu, nice open plan dining, what more do you want in a cafe? Did I mention the coffee was great too? <br/><br/>We both ordered slow cooked lamb I Greek pita bread with feta and pomegranate, it was a very generous serve which we ended up getting a doggy bag. The lamb was so tasty and tender, the pomegranate added extra texture and sweetness to the dish. The coffee was one of the best, and our waiter was so friendly and helpful. He actually recommended the lamb. <br/><br/>The whole cafe opens up to King street, we enjoyed people watching from our front row table. We will be back!
Brett Richards
Lunched here today and my partner and i were very impressed, i had the Pork Belly with apple salad and it was divine as was my partners slow cooked lamb. The prices are very reasonable and the coffee is also very good. We will definitely lunch here again. Loved it.
Lau
Very impressed with this place. Good food good atmosphere. It's kid friendly - there's even a box of toys. Fully wheelchair accessible including accessible bathroom. I'll be back.
Will Power
Not great. Thought we would branch out try something new. Scrambled eggs all mushed up with capsicum and tomato, not great at all. All sides $5 each!! There sour dough bread all soggy from eggs, didn't try it just terrible waste to ruin the crusty bread!
Ivan Lim
Come and try this menu "3little pigs" from 2042 cafe! I really like it.. And don't forget to order hot Belgian white chocolate! Since there is promotion at scoopon, let's come and try!
Farrah
This place is pretty busy on the weekend so it's best to go early. The food portions are pretty big there which is good value. The food is good as well however I wouldn't go back regularly as its your average cafe with cafe food.
Black_orange
this cafe is bright and the open space is very welcoming, perfect for group gatherings where you won't get crammed into small spaces. the menu has some interesting ideas and the execution is just fine, but lacks the vibe of something exciting
Saud Nassir
Great atmosphere.. Good coffee and l liked the Egg Turkish bread :) :)
Mary
Lovely environment to sit and have a catch up with friends, large comfortable environment and very welcoming, which is hard to find any most cafes today. Coffee on the bland side, not using any specialty roast, but food good. We had the 3 Piggies breakfast, which was a delicious surprise for anyone wanting black pudding, and the Polenta special was good, just missing addition of fried baby tomato's to balance out the oiliness, but otherwise enjoyed the relaxing cafe, with free wifi.
Simplicity By Sarah
2042 perfected the gooey egg and were overly generous with the spinach however, they went a little crazy with the hollandaise sauce.
Savy_rox
Yummy!. Had the pork belly burger, it was amazing! Even the side of chips that we ordered was so yummy and huge! <br/>Quick service too, and the place was quite busy. Staff were friendly and responsive. Would go back 100%!
Little Eats Sydney
A sophisticated oasis of boho chic amongst the student grunge, takeaways and bars of Kings Street. A cafe with a grown up feel that easily accommodates big family groups and their kids. There are no fancy gimmicks or pretensions to 2042, it’s a comfortable place to be and the food is just very well made, generous and tasty.
THEJUGERNAUTS
we were promptly seated and our server was friendly.   coffees brunch. scrambled eggs, spinach, radish, chorizo. eggs were nicely cooked and not goopy and gross like they do at Bills (sorry but I’m not a fan of Bill’s famous scrambled eggs). Bread was nicely toasted.   eggs benedict salmon with hollandaise with a side of bacon. I like my bacon crisper less.. like this.   coffee was good. The cafe 2042 itself is quite big but indistinct; but the portion of food served wasn’t skint in portions and was decent enough to finish? Best breakfast spot? I think being to sit in the sun somewhere and eat a good brunch

<br/><br/>When Mr C told me we were going to go Newtown for lunch, I honestly didn’t want to go, I’ve always thought that place was a bit dangerous and dodgy because I’ve never been there. But since I typed this, obviously it means I enjoyed it in the end !
Gaby Mora
Holy crap, it took me almost 4 years to come back to this wonderful cafe. I heard from John that they had changed menus recently, and that prompted our visit. We knew the place had good food; this time what blew us away was the service.
Sir And Mlady Dine Out
This place is relaxed and friendly and because of this - and its location on King Street - it's pretty busy, particularly on weekends. Nevertheless its worth giving it a go as the food is quite good, the serving quantities are generous, the service is attentive and the prices are quite reasonable for the area.
Robert_hs
Coffee whilst not amazing was good and made well and Sonoma breads and muesli on the menu a good addition...
Jasmin
Named for the local post code, 2042 is a Deli and Café and just an amazing oasis. On our first trip there, so longing for the days of Anise – I found a sympathetic waitress who tried her best to make me exactly what I wanted. The Anise breakfast. It was fantastic.
The Sydney Tarts
2042 seems very much like an establishment that is happy for customers to pop in and simply hang out for as long as they like at any time of the day for a coffee, meal, to read one of the provided newspapers and to use their free wi-fi. The service was friendly and efficient, and it has a very much daytime feel to it, but it is open for dinner as well, with the dinner menu of entrees, mains, specials (though one could argue that if they if they are permanent "specials", they should probably just make their way into the "mains" section) and desserts also being available at lunch.
Gianna - TheEmptyFridge
We here at The Empty Fridge take brekky seriously - and when it comes to the meal of champions, we don't muck about. We do the hearty breakfasts well, most attribute this to a big night out and would consider these dishes "hangover cures"but come on guys.
Heneedsfood
It’s one of the busier cafe’s on this part of the strip. And you can see why. Big portions, a decent selection and good pricing.
Heneedsfood
The sandwich oozes with cheese, is very juicy and has a great sauerkraut.
Priscilla_yuen91
Great service, reasonable prices and food!. Was walking around the area and this Cafe caught my attention. Went in and service was good and friendly. Prices were very reasonable as well. Had the pork belly bacon burger and it was good. The bun of the burger wasn't too oily, and the mayo tasted great. Would go back to try the other dishes.
Heneedsfood
Pork Belly Burger. Great burger, pity the chipotle mayo had no spice at all
Thuyle28
Beautiful delicious Reuben sandwich with thinly sliced wagyu beef, pickles, cheese, mustard seeded nayonaise on toasted thick toast. Big portion! Yum
Facebook User
Great experience all round. I had the chicken wrap and my hubby had the lamb on Turkish Flatbread special and both meals were absolutely delicious, huge for how much they cost, and had obviously fresh ingredients. We considered getting a side of chips with our meal, but it was totally unnecessary as the meals really are satisfying by themselves.<br/><br/>The coffee is okay, pretty standard, but the atmosphere is wonderfully relaxing. We sat on the sofas looking out onto the sidewalk and had a very pleasant time sipping our coffee and people watching.<br/><br/>Staff were the right amount of attentive and we're kind and professional. <br/><br/>Great experience, highly recommend it.
Diner Loon
Great dishes, highest quality. Love this place, they do amazing food and are quite friendly. Prices are not super cheap but ingredients are really high quality. Very inspired dishes too! Recently discovered they do dinner on the weekends, now you can do breakfast, lunch and dinner here!
Restaurant Explorer
A Pain in the Neck Incident. Enjoyed a very good meal here, having been lured in by the comfortable look of the place and a pavement blackboard indicating "happy hour" therefore a free bottle of wine with the meal. Friendly service and happy with everything.....but as we were travelling home I suddenly thought "That meal was quite expensive, actually very expensive given the wine was "on the house". Once home I dug out the invoice and yes we had been charged $38 for the free wine. I contacted the restaurant and they apologised but said I would need to go back in to the restaurant to get the refund. Mmmm. I wonder why this had to be my problem. I don't often go to South King Street so this was quite an inconvenience. Why was it me that had to drive to Newtown to get this sorted? Maybe they could think about a system whereby their mistakes inconvenience them rather than the overcharged customer. Very irritating. Nice food, friendly people but I think this was poorly handled.

Da Shiz. Great atmosphere, great food, great prices. Pancakes are amazingly addictive (although probably not the best health wise) and the french toast- honestly the best I've had in Sydney-not for the faint hearted though with bacon, and maple syrup, but the dough is cooked to perfection. Great selection of savouries also, so it's perfect for a meal at any time of the day :)
Tash
Had the Scallop Salad frim the specials menu and it was amazing. Scallops were perfectly cooked and the portion as always was generous. Had the perfect combo of flavours and dressing was light so u got the full flavour of those massive scallops. Staff are really friendly and I cant get over the huge selection on the menu and the price for what u get. Its my favourite Newtown cafe.
Et222
Yum. Ive had both the 'fluffy pancakes' which came with banana, pecans and butterscotch sauce. was lovely at first, but got a little too sickening after, presentation wise - not that good. however, the coffee is surprisingly AMAZING. second time ive came here i ordered an omelette who's presentation was amazing. the service is really good at this cafe and the atmosphere and set up is really trendy and unique. the menu has lots of variety and is pretty cheap. would recommend.
Zoltan
Great food, fantastic service...loved it! The pork belly is to die for.
Katie
LOVE!. I looooooooooveeee this place! - I have been quite a few times, they do the best breakfast! <br/>The food and the service is excellent! I would recommend to anyone wanting a great breakfast or lunch!<br/>Keep up the good work!

Love this place food is always delicious. Breakfast is highly recommended

I just wanted to say thank you for making my 30 birthday so wonderful . The food was amazing the pork belly , steak , and platters was to die for . And your staff is got a get attitude . I recommend 2042 to anyone . Once again thank you .
Rodney S
Amazing food and great coffee. I come here every weekend.
Sharon Ess
Decor was nice and the place was large and roomy, great for mums with prams. I had the eggs Benedict and the serving was generous with a lot of salmon and sauce. The egg was fully cooked though so that was a great disappointment from me. Other than that, it was a great meal and I'd come back again.
Parker Doyle
Hands down The WORST SERVICE ever. I've been to some extremely rude places in my time but you never really expect it in Newtown. There was 10 people in store, not too busy, even people at the other table we're wondering if they were going to be served. Usually even just to be acknowledged with an nod or eye contact even works for me to know that your seated and will be handed a menu soon but not even an acknowledgement. It all just seemed like it was too much of an effort from the male waiters when they finally did come and even then it wasn't an "hello". Other customers just left. I'd be hiring friendlier approachable staff or else what's the point?
Ronin47
Piping hot pan. Went at opening time so service attentive. Not exactly a hip and happening crowd but doesn't matter when the pan omelette is served piping hot - a little of the egg at the bottom was still cooking when it came out so had to let it rest. You get a choice of 4 ingredients and it was great.
Kate B
Do not order the chicken salad. It is terrible. The meat tastes like it has been sitting in the fridge for three days and is almost all bones. I was literally served the carcass part of the chicken. It was almost all fat or bone.
Erkofuton
Love this place. Try the omelette for brekkie, the beef medallions for lunch and the polenta for a lighter meal. All massive servings.<br/>Brilliant staff. Great food. Warm and comfy atmosphere.<br/>This has become a quick fav of mine
Kris
Fave brunch spot. Love the food here, especially the wagyu and pickles on rye, always great coffee and the kids menu is the best in town! Pulled pork burger and slaw for the kid is a yummy option and he devours it every time. Comfy set up and smiley staff you can't go wrong.
Hannah
Lunch with the Girls. My girl friends and I have taken up 2042 as our semi-regular lunch spot. <br/>Cocktails and salads are always the orders and are yet to disappoint. <br/><br/>Service can be slow and sometimes it seems like the waiters are staying away from us deliberately- Could have more to do with us? <br/><br/><br/>It doesn't quite know what it is with a bit of a mismatched decor, deli counter and its a large space to fill. <br/><br/>Overall a good place to stop off between upper and lower King st.
Andrea
Worst vegetarian burger I've ever had in my entire life. So foul-tasting, I couldn't even begin to describe it. Never eating here again.
Janakovalcik
Jana. Thank you for a such a delightful Sunday afternoon Loved every minute of it.<br/>Love the food Love the Ambiance and Love the unruffled atmosphere of a local establishment where you feel as part of a family . <br/>See you again Soon

Get a new barista - food good, coffee weak and terribly made.
Kenright
They must have read and acted on their reviews as the service was fast efficient and friendly. The apple cinnamon smoothie was one of the best smoothies we have ever tasted. The beef sandwich with sauerkraut and pickles was really tasty and more than big enough and the pancakes with pecans banana and butterscotch were delicious. Only down side cherry and cranberry frappe a little bland. Will be returning to sample more of this inviting menu. Kenright:Always right
CeraK
Good food but terrible service.. The breakfast was good, however took a while to order. My juice and coffee arrived at the same time after I had finished eating. The waitress seemed annoyed by my asking the where-abouts of my drinks (twice). Won't go back with such poor service....a shame as there is nothing wrong with the food.
Shelmie
Ordered a soy cappuccino, got a milk one. Sent it back, and after all our meals were almost finished, received my soy cap. Was so burnt and disgusting I couldn't drink it. Great work guys. My first time there and my last.
Bella
Not really a great place to eat on your own, as the service is a bit lax. Food is ok though.
Foodjourney
Enjoyable lunch. Been a few times, and always enjoyed my lunch here with great selection of salad. Service can be a bit slow on weekend sometime.

Best dining discovery of the year!!. We recently attended an Christening catered by 2042. The amazing spread that day was just delicious. Our proud hosts informed us that the cafe was their fav weekend brunch spot. So, last weekend we arrived for breakfast at the bustling cafe with high expectations...and were not disappointed. The menu was so full of tempting dishes... We tried the Waffles with sticky fig ice cream and maple syrup (decadent, yet light), Fluffy pancakes (that were truly the fluffiest!), Eggs Benedict (rich and yummy hollandaise and free range eggs) and the Scrambled eggs with shallots and chorizo (a magical combination). My latte was great, I broke my one coffee a day policy, and their Lychee, pineapple and mint frappe is a must try. The staff, though clearly very busy, were friendly and attentive, and one waitress even took my disgruntled nephew to a toy box to keep him amused. We're going back this weekend for dinner, and I am planning to explore their goodies in the deli section...stay tuned.
Chris Wood
Good location and service, but the coffee is weak and milky.
Madam Wu
Terrible coffee. The coffee I had there was the worst one I've had in a long time and that includes time spent in the US! I haven't eaten here yet but I'm not keen to after that experience and aside from the fact that the menu looked exceedingly generic. Service was casual and relaxed which meant you can linger here and use the free wifi but that was the only good thing about the whole experience.
Lisa
Loads of better places in Newtown. I've been here a couple of times as it was close to my old flat, and I have to say every time I think I'll give it another go but it's always the same - decent food, TERRIBLE service.<br/>I practically had to crash tackle a guy to order, and he was mute during the entire process, had to yell after him that we wanted drinks as he was walking away as he took our order.<br/>Seriously, it's Newtown - there are plenty of other cafes better than this. Try Chill Cafe further down King St.
Andrew
Like the previous reviewer I was not pressed. It took a long time to get served. The eggs on Turkish toast tasted odd - probably the homous - the Turkish toast was soggy and only toasted on one side. The coffee came in a cold cup and was also cold - the orange juice wad watery and full of ice. the staff seemed a bit distracted - sorry but once bitten .....
Emma
Not too sure. Maybe Im missing something but I just don't get what the fuss is. The food is bland and the place just doesn't feel quite right. I don't think it suits the area. The staff are pretty friendly though
Spikers
Had a wonderful breakfast for four. Food was excellent and service very efficient. Highly recommended.

Great food, great service, great atmosphere and variety.... I stumbled upon this place purely by accident. I was actually looking for another cafe which has since shut down, and when i couldnt find it decided to pop into 2042 cafe and Deli. Having had a look at the menu on the board out the front, the variety of modern dishes as well as old cafe favourites is what initally attracted me.<br/><br/>Ive been there on numerous occasions since, for breakfast and lunch and its NEVER disappointed. the specials are always FANTASTIC, the only problem being, that they should be on the normal menu they are that good!! From the traditional cafe breakfasts (delicious pancakes, eggs benedict, big breakfast etc etc etc) to the more modern dishes available both breakfast and lunch (dont forget to check out the specials board, it changes daily), there is something for everyone, even the vegetarians and vegans.<br/><br/>The coffee is great, the staff friendly, the cafe itself is quite large, so i have always got a great table, either outside, on the lounges (a mocha and the reading the paper in the sunshine = bliss!) or inside.
Nathan Currathers
Great everything, all the time. Great food and drink, great service, great atmosphere, super comfortable, accommodating. its usually quite busy, but theyll always make a table for us! its fine dining without the attitude. you can tell by the scrambled eggs with chorizo and shallots and the lamb sandwich that theyre definitely very passionate about what they do. 9/10!
Latisha Wenlock
Great Food. I went here last week for lunch and was very impressed. The coffee was a bit weak, but the foot was fantastic as was the service. <br/><br/>I had one of the specials, Salmon with leek peas a tarragon sauce and ricotta tortellini - absolutely devine.<br/><br/>My friend had the pulled pork sandwich and said it was very good too.<br/><br/>I would highly recommend this cafe.
Davo
Awesome salads! They easily do for a whole meal
Josh
Great service and great food. Plenty of tables but still space for the pram. The pulled pork sandwich was so good we went back for the same the next day! A great change from the mediocre food and terrible service that seems to have become the norm on king st lately... This will be our new regular!
Rita
Yum. Fantastic sunday morning breakfasts! So surprised at the great service considering how damn busy they get on the weekends Always attentive and friendly. Unique menu, love the chorizo scrambled eggs, my boyfriend cant get enough of the waffles with butterscotch sauce and any cafe that serves jamon is in my good books. Great coffee, great bloody mary's. Would recommend this cafe to anyone.

Still in love with this place. Had the best hot chocolate of my life there a few weeks ago - Belgian Real Hot Chocolate. Epic. Everyone who says this place doesn't fit in Newtown is crazy.

My local. I personaly love this cafe. The couches at the front, big open space, very friendly service, organic tea and food is realy good. I can't believe how big the menu is. My favourite for breakie is corn and ricotta hot cakes with crispy bacon and green tomato relish and my partner always order fried eggs with homus, smoked paprika and parsley salad.<br/>Last week we tried dinner for the first time and we where impressed again.<br/>We had antipasto platter from the deli counter ($40 for 2 to share) and they let us to choose what cheese and cold meats we like.<br/>They are fully licensed as well so hello" 2042 margarita" here I come...

My local. Home feel decor with couches at the front, friendly staff, very good menu ( I'm a chef so I'm not easily impressed), my favourite is corn and ricotta hot cakes with crispy bacon and green tomato relish for breakie and smoked wagyu beef sandwich with saurkraut , pickles and dijonaise for lunch. Will have to try the dinner soon...<br/>Good job guys!

I don't get it...... Ok, don't like to do it, but I have to give this place the tumbs DOWN! Why oh why the owners ever thought that a place like this would fit in on King St - especially the southern end! - is beyond me. The place looks nice enough, but it's just boring. The food is bland, the menu is uninspiring, and the atmosphere is....wait...there is no atmosphere. And I don't know what it is, but if you're one of the only customers in an almost empty shop, don't you think a "hello" or even a look of acknowledgement is warranted? I waited for about 10 minutes before anyone even saw me, and I would have left but I was meeting a group there (not my choice). And when the waitress finally served us (there were 5 of us), she acted as if she was doing us a favour. Sorry guys, but you need to seriously pull your socks up - you've made a bad impression.

Not worth it. Disappointed, I was expecting a lot more. Bitter coffee and not so great food<br/><br/>Unfriendly staff and trying way too hard. Doesn't suit Newtown at all.

Fine choice for a SoKi lunch. Big cafe with room for big group lunches. Chicken salad reported by fellow diner to be the best ever! Great selection of deli items to take away (organic goats cheese looked a winner) and the service was friendly.

Had wonderful breakfast with kids - lychee mint pineapple frappes were delicious; French toast was devine; my son said the pancakes were the yummiest he had ever eaten; & my husband proceeded to eat all of his corn & ricotta fritters even after saying he couldn't eat anymore half way through! Friendly and open service... Totally relaxing and easy start to the day... :)

2042 is the Best !. What a nice surprise this restaurant is ! We are totally sick of being ripped off at so called " Fine Dining & hatted Restaurants" ! with their snobbish attitudes and over the top pricing.<br/> 2042 is a breath of fresh air ! Staff are warm & friendly, no sooner you sit down & the menu and water arrives. The menu is extensive and it took us ages to decide with so many great dishes on offer. My steak diane was 'to die for ' and my partner chose the fish of the day which was as fresh & delicious than he had ever tasted.<br/> The chef, Gavin, tells us he goes to the markets personally and only chooses the freshest & the best on the day.<br/> Dinner at ' 2042 ' has a lovely feel about it with candles and a lovely ambience. Prices are great value and the deserts are extensive & delicious. We'll be back regularly !

Great food...great quality...great restaurant!. The first thing you notice about 2042 Cafe and Deli is the relaxed and friendly atmosphere and the space to lean back and relax without fear of knocking out a waitperson! There is none of the sense of overcrowding that you get in other restaurants who are eager to "pack in as many patrons as they can" to maximise the bucks.<br/> I invited a group of friends for dinner at 2042 recently and we were all impressed by the ambiance of the candlelit tables, the friendly staff as and the choice on the menu. I have visited 2042 a number of times now and found this restaurant to be very successful in being able to transform itself from a bustling, buzzing child-friendly cafe during the day to a relaxed and almost intimate restaurant at night. <br/> 2042 offers quality fresh food, with a very individual note and very reasonable prices. This is not your average home-cooked meal...nor is it your average cafe meal for that matter. There is a real quality and eye for detail in the combination of flavours and choices on the menu. <br/>Despite my love of haloumi cheese wrapped in vine leaves, I went instead for the goat's cheese entree which was spectacular. The lamb for main was cooked to mouth-watering perfection and the combination of pumpkin and fresh green vegies, just delicious. The servings are very generous ...but despite this, one must engage the dessert stomach because the selection at 2042 is to die for. <br/>I will certainly be dining again at 2042 and my friends complimented me on my choice of restaurant. Definely a great place for dinner...or breakfast...or lunch...!

Sudden popularity but we'll go back. 2042 Cafe & Deli opened on the South end of King St a couple of months ago, where the long-time Mexican restaurant Newton's Cucina occupied the same space. 2042 Cafe has been relatively quiet, until the SMH write-up last week. Now business has tripled the waitress told us. Went for a late 2pm Sunday lunch today. Initial long wait for a menu had us going in and asking for service so not a great start. But the scrambled eggs w/ chirizo and my linguine with EVOO, chill, garlic, baby capers & prawn meat was above average. Also great coffee and it's licensed. Gluten free options also available. We'll be back, especially after the mad crowds die down.
