Review Ho's Dim Sim Kitchen - Sydney

Ho’s Dim Sim is no longer trading at 429A Pitt St, Haymarket 2000. Their products are now available at 20 Meeks Rd, Marrickville 2204. All items are hand made in-house from locally sourced ingredients, available to the public at wholesale prices. Better than ever! You can call or order online.

This shop sells a great range of frozen dim-sums like dumplings, buns and so on. They also sell hot food like the HK egg tart, Portugese sweet tarts and some deep fried stuff (for the Australian tastes). The food tastes ok, but nothing outstanding and the prices are a bit higher than they should be due to its CBD location. On a recent return, there seems to be a change of ownership as the shop is now run by Thai people. While the core business remains the same, it seems to have taken the path of selling fusion Thai/Chinese food.

AVOID THIS PLACE, NOW THAI FOOD Chinese food is gone from the take away counters, last time I went they were out of egg tarts and har gow were dry, like they were sitting there for half the day! It’s now filled with Thai food. Gone are the BBQ pork pancakes, spring rolls, mixed dim sim, sui mai, rice pudding and chicken feet! So sad, loved this place. Bye Ho’s Dim Sim Kitchen PS. There is also a Marrickville store but not sure if it’s retail.

Cheap and tasty dim sim shop where you can buy and eat on the spot or uncooked ones to take home. price is friendly and very convenient.

Its mainly Thai take away, but the frozen dim sim is very good quality and value. They have a frozen take away section that is great! All bulk buys like 50 x sui mai for $35. We have been using a microwave steamer to heat up these yummy Dim sims... try the jumbo prawn Har Gows! Yum!

It's an okay place that sells sweet and savory Thai and Asian delicacies. I notice just one table and a couple of chairs inside so I'm not sure if you can eat inside. Hard to describe this place as I didn't really feel the true atmosphere when I visited. I entered mainly to buy Thai "sweet cakes". The staff who served me was a bit abrupt and unfriendly voice repeating " anything else??" without a pause. Along this side of Pitt Street there are about 4 or 5 similar establishments that sell similar stuff as this store, so I would not be going back! There's wheelchair accessible entrance. You can buy pre-prepared meal-to-go, steamed or fried dim sum, strir fried meat with rice and soft drinks. Floor was a bit greasy and just feels overall like a place that needs thorough cleaning! Not my favourite.

Best pork buns I've had in a long time, perfectly steamed and not gluggy or glutinous, as they can sometimes be. Portuguese tarts are a unique take and very nice. Not a lot of seating, but a great place to get a quick snack.

I have been coming to this place for years for cheap dim sum and snacks. However today I found myself in a rather unfamiliar environment when I saw the place being run by Thai ppl and selling Thai food rather than the usual Chinese staff. The dim sum choices are lack off and replaced by Thai options. I don't think I'm coming back anytime soon.
The Next Rush
Technically you’re still in Chinatown but more on the edge well away from the action and this part of the block is Thaitown to be exact. Now if it’s cheap eats, snacks or a quick fix for the lunch you left at home because of the rush to work than this place has got your back. Sticky rice lunch boxes with salad, chicken, fried pork are a convenient easy fill for any craving. But what makes this place so fun to visit are the random specials when these babies get marked down to $5 and at the counter they’ll place a selection of dumplings, skewers and other battered treats on a tray for you to pick at and pack at $1 a piece.

Thi shop sells ready-to-eat deep-fried treats, cakes, dim sim as well as frozen packs for you to cook at home.
I’ve been coming here for several times. Not bad to grab a quick snacks to enjoy on the go. My favourites: Portuguese Tart and Crispy BBQ Pork Bun.
Customer service was not that good unfortunately. Not friendly at all.

Great place that has been here forever to buy takeaway bulk frozen dumplings (recommend the duck dumpling), plus they have lots of Asian pastries and sweets (favorite is pak tong guo - very fresh and soft), as well as hot food for takeaway or eat in (dumplings, spring rolls, bao). Service is quick and friendly.

Ho's has been around since I first came to Sydney in 1980, the taste is the best one can eat, due to the food itself taste like what in Hong Kong cooking is. will always have something whenever I am in Sydney Chinatown, very reasonable much cheaper than what is being sold and eaten at the most reputable restaurant in Sydney NSW. importantly they are super fresh even though frozen items are great taste items, to be eaten and enjoyed. very nice for house parties dim sim's items excellent for serving to the guest, I do that every time I have a gathering and party.

My friend recommend me this place to get nice and cheap dimsum, I went here to buy bamboo steamer and red bean sesame balls (onde-onde) for $1.60 each. It still warm and the skin crispy and gooey.

Dim Sims are pretty ordinary here but the BBQ Pork Glutinous Rice Pancake is Extraordinary. Don't waste your time on eating other stuff. Go for the pancake. Its texture is so soft it almost melts in your fingers. The stuffing inside consists of succulent BBQ pork and has well balanced sweet & salty flavours. Just for the pancake I give this bear 4 bears.

Bought BBQ pork pie but quite disappointed as it was not as good as I tried at other place
The pastry was crispy though
The black sesame red bean paste ball was okay but not crispy it was rather chewy

Located next to the Boon Cafe, I was excited to see a Chinese Dim Sim eatery like Ho's. Although you can not expect that someone will serve you the dim sims like Yum Cha, there are plenty of demands that peoples like to enjoy dim sims at their comfortable homes. Had a browse and appreciated the varieties that they offer. Besides dim sims, there are plenty of Chinese pastries like Lotus Seed Cakes and Red Bean Cakes as well as some cold dishes like shredded salted chicken, spicy chicken and chicken frets. Prices are all reasonable. Needless to say, I brought some back to Brisbane for my family.....

I honestly don't understand why this place is rated that highly, maybe I came here on a bad day. I got number of things to try fresh, the baked BBQ pork bun, mixed prawn dumplings & sui mai's, then also got a pack of frozen Lotus Seed buns for home. The BBQ pork bun was the type you get at Tim Ho Wan baked with the crispy top, but taste wise a mile behind THW, it was ok, just not as good as I was hoping. Both prawn dumplings & sui mai's were generous in size & filling, but the dumpling's wrapping was too thick, and the sui mai was too dense & bit dried. To most disappointing of all was the lotus seed buns, once again generous in size, but really thick bun vs filling, the filling was also pasty & bland. Probably won't go back.

I love this place for the custard pancakes. Plus the egg custard sticky rice balls. And the baked pork buns.

Over the years, the menu items have shrunk, and the prices have increased but their refurbishment last year means that it is a much nicer place to dine in.

There is also an expansive frozen and refrigerated section where you can pick up packets of Chinese buns and dumplings for a quick meal at home.

Service can be a hit or miss here.

This appears to be a kind of bulk dim sum (dumpling) shop but we only ever buy egg tarts from here. We've bought both the Cantonese and the Portuguese egg tarts and they're both fantastic. Fresh flaky pastry and the filling is really made with egg. They're also really good value too!!

Odd mix of University food court and frozen dumpling wonderland.

Very cheap dim sum goodies to buy to eat immediately, although almost all fried.

Bulk stocks of take-home dumplings are what you come here for. 50 dim sims, and 50 prawn dumplings are now in the freezer, together with smaller packs of vegetarian dumplings and pork buns. Catering for blow-ins and impromptu family gatherings never looked so easy. I have no doubt that these tidbits are the basis of many yum Cha restaurant offerings, bought wholesale on the quiet.

And you can order online with a few days notice and they'll deliver for free if you buy enough. We always buy enough 😎. Very reasonably priced too.

This place is really hit and miss. My favorite is the red bean sesame ball, the fried batter is crunchy and the red bean paste is not overly sweet. I don't mind the Chinese pancake either - chopped shallots and Chinese sausage give it a lot of flavour; the texture is tough and chewy which I quite like. On the other hand the deep fried prawn or veggie dumplings were horrible, all batter no fillings. The BBQ pork pie was gross, tasted almost like soap!!! I took one bite and spit it out straight away. The rest of it ended up in the bin. That foul taste still haunts me today and reminds me to keep distance from the shop unless I am desperate.

Cheap & cheerful place to get pastries, dumplings and meals to go. If you are running low in cash or on a budget come here and I'm sure you'll find something or a few things to fill you up, not the best but not the worst either.

Just a few minutes walk away from Metro Hotel is a great go-to place for yum cha snacks be it for breakfast or pick-me-up snacks. Good customer service and great yum cha stuff. Definitely will come back for a future visit to Sydney one day

Loved the Portuguese egg tart from them! SO crispy and fresh! Yummm! We live opposite and whenever we crave for some snacks we will go down and grab some nice dim sum from them.

A fast $3 snack on the run is a pork bun & spring roll with $1 coffee from 7-Eleven opposite.

Ho's Kitchen doesn't pretend to be anything that it isn't. Sure there are better dumplings around, but it annoys me when I'm at fancier places than Ho's that sell the same quality food for twice the price.

None of the cakes I've tried have been nice, the pork buns aren't brilliant but they hit the spot; if you love but try to avoid deep-fried (hello, prawn toast balls!) it's good to be able to buy just 1 piece.

My favorite is the frozen 'Sin Juke Giun', which I always buy in bulk to take home. These are dried bean curd skin rolls filled with pork, prawns & veges, in gravy.

I love yum cha because I get to eat as soon as I sit down. And Ho's is a similarly satisfying source of instant gratification. They have a lot of different dim sum, which are reasonably priced, of ok quality and are ready to go. They also sell frozen dim sum that you can take home - once again, super high convenience factor!

It's easy, it's quick, and they've got a big selection. You get what you pay for, and have come to get: an irresistable dumpling snack when you're in the area and nothing else will do.

It's better to get frozen food though, to impress your friends with at dinner parties (or to secretly steam up that sticky rice wrapped in lotus leaf and eat it all to yourself).

Some of the treats look a little greasy and dodgy (and I remember the soup dumpling as being particularly disappointing) but some of the other dishes are OK. Har gow and sui mai are just OK. Coconut balls and Malaysian steamed cake are not bad, I think. The deep fried little spaceship with meat inside is pretty good.

Horrible food! So salty!

The dim sim are not bad, but it's nothing spectacular. It's more so about the convenience - they have more substantial dishes with rice, which seem to be quite popular at lunch.

We find great dim sum and get mugged by a possum. The Haymarket end of Pitt Street in the City is a buzzy place these days, lots of people and plenty of new places to eat. We find ourselves in need of a wee snack and stumble upon Ho's Dim Sim Kitchen. We are drawn in by the hot, ready-to-go dim sum. We try a golden fish ball, a prawn and chive roll and a bbq pork bun. Yum. You could stock up here on dim sum and have yum cha at home. There's also some interesting frozen side dishes such as duck feet, beef brisket and goat casserole. And lots of sweeties. But we're just here for a quick hot fix. The place was hugely popular, stocks were running low, that's the bbq pork pie above. Ho's Dim Sim Kitchen was very popular, it felt like a little piece of Hong Kong in Sydney. To continue the Hong Kong vibe we go to Paddy's Market for the infamous Sunday afternoon fruit and veg sell-off. 5.30pm on Sunday at Paddy's Market is as close as you can get to a busy Chinese market overseas. It's freneti

Wouldn't go to the dim sim kitchen for dim sum. Cheap food which is a plus but it shows in both taste a quality. pork buns are average and dumplings are gross. barely warm , sweaty and just bizarre strange and slightly disgusting flavours. I do not recommend when there are so many great dumpling places in the area. pay a little more for a greater experience

Tasty dim sims, even the frozen ones are really good! Asian supermarkets like Tonyon also sell the frozen ones from Ho's Dim Sim Kitchen. The pork and prawn Siu Mai is my favourite.

This place is just the best for Dim Sim!. I'm not going to elaborate too much just know that the place is small but the choice is ginormous and these hand made Dim Sim are heavenly tasty!...
Dim Sim lovers, don't go anywhere else!
(not really a restaurant.. it is a takeaway/DimSim Shop)

Not just dim sims. You'll find a plethora of edible Chinese goodies at this bustling joint in Haymarket. Not only do they do handmade dim sims, you can also get dumplings, steamed buns and custard tarts. These guys also wholesale to restaurants and supermarkets and even do catering.
