I find the best value venues in this part of Chinatown starting from Ultimo Road walking away from Market City. They’re usually not on Menulog or Uber Eats and typically wont have to be listed on those guides because of the natural footfall of the area and the reputation they earn as local favorites for quick and easy take out or casual dining.
Lanzhou beef noodles were delicious and good thickness (we chose thick noodles). Good flavour, decent portion size, good price and friendly staff. It does get busy during after work hours. Will highly recommended and I would definitely come back :)
Vinegar & Sweet chilli eggplant ($13.80), Shandong crispy chicken & rice ($13.80) and pickled cabbage beef noodle soup ($10.80), every single dish was generous in flavor and portion size. The absolute winner for me was the eggplant dish - crisp on the outside and light/tender on the inside, the chicken was also a must order. The beef noodle soup was made well but not a wow dish, i would replace this with a stir-fry noodle dish next time.
We love us some noodles and dumplings, so for our last meal out before self-quarantine we went along to Mr Chen Beef Noodle to see what the fuss is about. This unsuspecting hole-in-the-wall prides itself on serving hand-stretched, Lanzhou-style noodles and Shanghai dumplings, and boy do they do it well.
Whenever I’m craving for Spicy noodles, I go to here! They make the perfect spicy noodle! I love their flavours , and the spiciness of the soup base is something I can always go back to this any day I want to slurp on something warm. Definitely rate this spicy noodles 10/10!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Crowd was there on a Sunday night dinner but there’s still seats available for walk ins.. Service was quick and efficient. The place was a little rowdy. Noodles were nicely flavored and had good elasticity. Dumplings were good but pan fried dumplings would need more heat as it is not throughly cooked. Tofu with eggplant dish was well seasoned and nice. Onion pancakes were crispy. Will definitely head back for more next time as price is reasonable and food was good.
Noodles are great and the cheap dumplings are such great value. I could eat 40 probably.
So there's a bit of a wait no matter what day you go on but Mr Chen is completely worth it! Putting aside their famous 30c dumplings which are delicious, the hole in the wall restaurant offers a variety of noodle and Chinese dishes, almost all of which are incredibly affordable with large portion sizes.
The Lanzhou beef noodles I tried was probably the best I'd ever had, the broth was hearty and the flavour actually penetrated the noodles unlike some others I've had. While the pan fried vegie dumplings were incredibly delicious, the star of the show was the shallot pancake which was super crispy savoury and absolutely amazing with the chilli oil.
But regardless of how cheap the dishes were, each plate at Mr Chen stood out as incredibly delicious and I'd definitely recommend it to anyone and everyone!
Extensive menu and amazing hand pulled noodles. With most noodle dishes, you can pick sizes from thin to thick. Shallot pancakes were good crispy. We dined in when 50c dumplings were on, so we were surprised how cheap it was. Would definitely come back here for Chinese food!
