Review Ouroboros - Sydney

Kevin
Good place to have lunch with a small to medium sized group. Plenty of cafe favourites and healthy versions of pub favourites. Friendly and helpful staff, willing to adjust the menu for specific dietary requirements. I suggest you check the specials board as they’re probably the better menu options. The cafe is nice and clean and overall has a good feel about it. Thumbs up from me.

We decided to try it as we have passed by on many occasions and it has been packed each time. The coffee is good but the teas are fragrant and delicious. The food we have tried is flavour packed and delicious - nicely balanced. Alas the poached eggs are over cooked - the yolk is solid instead or being runny. Service is a little stop start early in the day but gets going after that. Food service can be a little slow but the presentation is good.

Ouroboros Wholefoods I’m not sure why the café is called Ouroboros, but history tells me it is a symbol that has morphed amongst cultures (Greek, Egyptian) and later adopted into other cultures too. Broadly speaking it represents infinity. The fact that this wholefoods café is called Ouroboros might have something to do with it being a healthy and organic wholefood place which potentially this world would be in fitting with lasting longer. But that’s just a theory. When devised, the owners simply wanted a healthy haven. That’s certainly what you’ll find. Upon walking in, you see beautifully painted walls, hanging greenery and it does feel like a little oasis amidst Surry Hills. Using locally sourced produced and home-made meals, the menu is fabulous, for it suits a range of diners, vegan, vegetarian, gluten free, dairy free. A menu with breakfast options, salads, more substantial meals like omelettes, paleo bowls and fritters or risotto to name a few. I loved their charred broccoli salad with crispy warm chickpeas, feta, lemon, sunflower seeds, both a vegan and gluten free dish. On a subsequent visit, when I was hungrier, the Nourish Bowl with freekeh, quinoa, tofu, kale, sumac, corn, avo, enoki mushrooms, pumpkin and sweet potato hummus was also a tasty dish and a generous serve. Complement your meal with a loose leaf coffee, cold pressed juice, coffee or even a glass of wine since they’re licensed ! They even have some guiltier pleasures like some amazing freshly baked muffins on the counter top. In the take-away counter, there’s freshly made sandwiches or vegan and refined sugar free desserts if you’re just grabbing something out of the office. Staff here have been friendly and super efficient on each occasion I visited. They also seem not to mind the business meeting or individual working away on the laptop or reading for more extended periods. The only downside is that it is only open weekdays. I can only visit when on holidays. But, see you then! Ouroboros 1

Great place to catch up with friends. We enjoyed breakfast here - great coffee and amazing stacks!! We had the Corn Fritters and also the Dukkha Stack.

I enjoy what I had here, will try other menu on my next visit for sure. Great coffee of course!

The food at this cafe is outstanding. We have been visiting for some time for breakfast and every dish I have ordered is delicious. This morning I had the breakfast gnocchi which melted in my mouth (homemade!!!). If you like Greek flavours you will love the food. The owners and staff are all delightful and genuinely nice.

Both times I have eaten here I have been astounded by how a simple collection of ingredients can be made to taste so incredible! I ate beautifully presented, nourishing vegan bowls on both visits, served by an absolutely lovely waiter. Can not reccomend strongly enough!

My friends and I had brunch for a birthday here on a Saturday morning. The cafe wasn’t busy but it took about half an hour for 6 of us to receive our coffees and there were a couple of mix ups which were eventually sorted and the staff were nice about it. I ordered the vegan bowl and whilst the ingredients were fresh they needed some sort of seasoning as well. Chilli, coriander, paprika, cumin, anything would have been great. Also the plates weren’t cleared when we finished eating and were still there when we left. Just few things would have made it a better experience. The coffee was nice though.

Wow, are busy just before closing time.
I’m buying piccolo and I saw this cute jar on the counter, the flu tonic.
I have intrigued with “flu tonic” all the goodness such as ginger, turmeric, orange, lemon, cayane pepper, honey in small jar for $5.
Really soothing and give your body warm.
My piccolo was 👌🏿
Service also warm and full of smiles
Friendly staff n awesome food! Cute setting, great for studying and meetings...... absolutely love this place, very humble and cozy . Price is moderate

The food was above average, and the prices were the same as nonorganic food, worth. Can't get enough on the difference which organic foods provide a much richer flavor :) They also had cold press juices which you could make your own combination, pretty rare usually cold press juices are pre-made bottles.

Great location and layout. Having a fancy Bacon and egg - a little on the pricey side but it was very well made, bacon and sauce was definitely on point. Nice range of juices and pretty good coffee.

Their main goal is to rip off people. They announce that they have $5 wines during lunch but they charge you almost twice and they say the one you get was not $5.

As I’ve said before, Sydney’s a tough place to open a restaurant or cafe. It’s not enough to have good food, or a good idea. It has to be the right vibe for the right place as well. So, it’s great to see that the corner of Devonshire and Holt Street is hopping busy at the Ouroboros Organic Wholefoods Cafe.

Just dropped in for a quick coffee whilst I was in Surry Hills. Very friendly staff and cool mural painted by some famous Mexican hip hop guy apparently! Very good coffee and from what I could see lots of colourful lunch dishes being consumed! The specials board included such healthy options as Smoked Ocean Trout salad, Barramundi salad, Roasted Vegan salad and Prawn Risotto. The list of specialty teas and cold pressed juices is also quite impressive! Look forward to coming back to eat!

Bloody fantastic Cafe which is so close to work and yet I only visited today. Lovely staff and a great menu. I got the Spanish chorizo eggs which were so goood. Turmeric latte was fab too.

Located on the café hub of Holt Street this is a light, airy space which is obviously popular with Surry Hills creative types, many of whom can be spotted huddled over their MacBooks. The furniture is Scandinavian pine, the food is healthy and the Chai Latte is $3.50. A pleasant spot to while away a lunchtime break.
Does My Bomb Look Big In This
The Surry Hills lunch trade is a fickle and highly competitive beast. You’ve only got one chance to impress; one misstep and there’s plenty of other places vying for diner attention. This goes to explain how I came to be writing about Ouroboros so late in the piece. At first I dismissed the light and airy space as relentlessly hipster – a triumph of on-trend typography and illustration over substance – after eating a meal that lacked flavour with a drink served in a jam jar.More than a year on, craving something healthy, I give Ouroboros it a second chance. Ordering a Haloumi Burger ($18) from the specials board, purported to contain lentils, kale, quinoa and broccoli, I’m surprised to receive a particularly juicy and delicious wagyu burger adorned with a grilled piece of haloumi cheese. Brought to my senses by this rather fortuitous order mix up, I devour the Haloumi Wagyu Burger ($19) with particular relish. Oozing sriracha mayonnaise and draped pickles, this slightly too tall burger contains...

I'm a huge fan of organic.. Very Disappointed to be served Off chicken And have to pay half price for the dish because I ate some the rice. A chewed on first few pieces of chicken, little strange, kept trying it, then had to spit
Out next chicken piece. Yuk. Not impressed. Given a coffee voucher. Would have liked meal to be taken off. Very surprised and not confident to go back there. My first review I've written but feeling ripped off and I So hope in not in for any gut issues.

Really tasty food, and wonderful cakes. Been here twice, the burgers has such amazing dressing, all gluten and dairy free AND organic. A rare find! The owner is there most of the day and goes above and beyond for his costumers, his goal being to improve peoples health and awareness not to make a big buck, his actions support his words. They even have free alkalised water!
I also tried the macadamia gluten free brownie and it was sooo delicious.
Their teas are created by a naturopath.

only minus is the chai latte which is made by powder which include sugar. Doesn't really fit in wit the rest of the health focus. Hope they change this, in the mean time you can ask for a chai latte made with their own organic chai tea blend.

Found on the Liven app, offering 25% off reward through the app. A very cool place for lunch in Surrey Hill. The smoothie tastes so good. But what I like more about this place is the atmosphere, the painting on the wall is so artistically done up. Friendly service, nothing to fault at all.
My Lil' Sydney
Came here for breakfast and ordered the Salmon Benedict stack and my partner the bacon and egg roll. The priced items from the menu are quite expensive but I can understand this because of the organic aspect.
What I didn't like is that the food was rather tasteless. The avocado from my salmon stack tasted like a thick vegetable soup. Don't know why they couldn't flavour some simple fresh avocados. The salmon was also tasteless.
My partner's bacon and egg roll was so underwhelming and tasteless that he didn't finish it.
Buying organic items regularly for the intensity of their flavour I'm lost to figure out why their dishes failed to deliver on flavour. On the plus side, the coffee was nice. Perfect temperature and flavour.
Anyway, we might give it one more try with something else from the menu but if the result of still disappointing I won't be returning to/recommend this place.

My coffee was sitting on the bar at least couple of minutes after made before brought to me…… the coffee wasn't even warm enough. no service attended, average food. A bit dissapointed

Avoid like the plague.

This was definitely the worst service ever. We walked into an empty cafe, sat ourselves and waited patiently as the waiter walked by us and stood around for about 10 minutes before he decided to greet us and hand us a menu. When we were eventually able to order our coffee, we saw it sitting up on the counter for about 10 minutes whilst the same waiter walked by it and had no idea what to do with them. We then asked if it would be possible for our coffees to make the 1 meter journey from the counter to our table. As expected, they were freezing cold. We then asked for some hot water, expecting to be offered a new hot beverage and the waitress went and poured us a hot glass of water, without any apology.

If only it stopped there.

We ordered some food off the menu, assuming the chefs would have previously seen their own menu, and when it arrived it was clear they decided to freestyle our order. The kale and brown rice salads were substituted by Coles lettuce and carrot salad mix (odd choice for a proclaimed wholefoods cafe) that contained no traces of kale or brown rice as the menu specified. We were also ungrateful to the chefs for replacing the tahini dressing with Greek yoghurt, as we both have dairy intolerances. The paleo breakfast arrived missing poached eggs and avocado but substituted with a serving of hair. When we alerted the waitress she then brought out the two poached eggs which were hard boiled. We hardly touched our food as it was not was we ordered or expected.

When we told the waitress at the register of all the dissaponting things she took $2 off our bill each.

Would not recommend to anyone. Do not waist your money or time.

For $8, the berry smoothie left a lot to be desired. Rather prompt service but the place lacked any sort of warmth.

On the plus side; they apparently have an excellent health and hygine rating.
Omnivore
There were lots of options for people with allergies or the health conscious, but both the food and dessert (we had the brownies) wasn't that awesome unfortunately. We've had better elsewhere, a lot better. They are a bit pricy and the waitstaff here seem new and disinterested. It was the big and little things- not knowing what was in the specials (my friend couldn't eat certain ingredients), not bringing the drinks menu over so we didn't know about their juice options until after we saw them on another table. It was hard to get their attention even if you wave and sit at a table with knives and forks down. Lastly, we could see our food ready from the kitchen and the waitstaff just joked and talked amongst themselves, we had to ask before they noticed and brought it over.
Food Obsessed
So straight up wasn't too keen because "organic" food now I know but I hate the idea of spending money on minute food I heart food. My doctors sadly agrees. So it's this cute cafe up at Devonshire with seating outside and in. Menu has everything from paleo to vegan, gluten free basically any food buzz words you've heard. Today being coldish I went for this pasta dish - saffron prawn fettuccini and may I just say the taste blew me away?! It's such a beautiful dish with beautiful tangy flavour coming through the pasta. The asparagus and cherry tomatoes (in season and organic) tasted so fresh and clean. A generous serving of prawns completed this dish. It was $22 which honestly isn't much in this part of the woods and the serving portions are very generous. A new fav considering all gluten free/ dairy free sweets available

Went there for Sunday breakfast. Really nice menu - interesting, different and very tasty. Very good coffee. Service a bit slow but friendly - in any case we were not in a hurry being Sunday. We will go back.

I really wanted to like this place. Really nice atheistic, love the lightness and openness of the space.

Unfortunately the food doesn't live up to the promised experience or the price. It was beautifully presented but overcooked poached eggs (almost hardboiled) undercooked corn fritters that were just doughy. An $8 smoothy that is half the size it should be.

highly disappointing. $50+ for a breakfast for two that we couldn't finish.

since they opened, i have only been 3 times. The atmosphere is trendy Surry hills style and everyone is friendly, however the food has yet to wow me at all.

I had a basic salad the first time, i found dry and bland (im not big on dressings but this needed something)but it was cheap

second time i had a different salad and added chicken. it was a little better but not worth the hefty price tag

Today i had a pulled pork burger, thinking i would try something a little more exciting.. way too much oil/fat dripping everywhere and it was intense. I had to drink about 1L of water to wash away the salt to be able to eat this one.

All in all, i think ill stick to bringing my own lunch. Tastes soo much better at a fraction of the price

A nice simplistic interior. Service is slightly overbearing. The wait staff kept returning to take my order. Attentive is good but this was a little over the top. The menu is interesting. Obviously slanted towards the healthy. A lot of it is likely organic so it wasn't cheap. Serving was very generous though. Have only tried a salad so far. Flavour wise, it's a healthy salad. There's only so much you can do right? 😆 Tastes ok for a healthy salad.

I just ordered the banana smoothie for $8.. I assumed that the raw, green bunches of bananas on display were just for aesthetics, turns out they put them in the drinks! I had 3 sips and left it on the table, left with a stomach ache and a dry mouth.

My partner's paleo breakfast was O.K, but incredibly overpriced and undersized @ $18.

Hopefully they get their act together, because the clean, fresh atmosphere is quite appealing.

This is a cute little place with lots of potential but I am still, after my second visit rather disappointed in there prices and what they offer. T/A salad's are $9.00 however if you want anything added (which you will because they aren't all that fulfilling) - it will cost you a fortune. I asked to add 2x items (avocado/ haloumi) and I got a very small salad made up of mostly rocket with about 2 pieces of haloumi and not even a quarter avocado all for $16.00 which is actually outrageous. They really need to work on there menu and pricing items right.

Great atmosphere, food and concept. Wonderful addition to the cafes here! :) Food was innovative and of good quality. Feel like the service could be a little more friendly

P R E T T Y H U R T S

Such a beautiful store, the illustrations and typographic style is very on trend. I enjoy seeing stores fully commit to the entire aesthetic!
Now, onto the food...
Every Time I eat here I tell myself I'll try something other than a salad but the ingredients are fresh! Never a limp spinach lead in sight!
I love being able to make a different salad every time I visit.
➡️

Absolutely great food and a great decor really fulfilling a fantastic need for good tasting organic wholesome fare. Have had some great teas and beaut sandwiches so hats off to the chef. Only one complaint is the wait staff. Too young, too inexperienced and lack that friendliness of some of the surrounding cafes.
