Review Walsh Bay Kitchen - Sydney

Great place to have dinner before show. The dinner curated for set courses. Very delicious

We had 2 pre-dinner drinks, 2 starters and 2 mains with 1 side. You'd think this would be easy but we had 5 dishes were incorrectly delivered to our table. 5 dishes that were not ordered by us. 1, maybe 2 is acceptable but 5? When we received our mains 1 was luke warm and the other, the barramundi, was paired with some odd flavours that (IMO) did not work. Nice place and convenient for the theatre but not sure I'd eat here again.

Booked a 40th birthday but they cancelled with only 4 days to go. After contacting the restaurant directly to book extra guests and arrange a cake, later that day I was called to tell me they had closed their kitchen due to a wedding. To make things worse, when I called, the manager scoffed and laughed. Appalling customer service all round and certainly wouldn’t recommend

This place ruined a 40th Birthday. We had a booking for our event, and despite several positive calls and emails to arrange things like head count, cake-age etc, on the week of the party they told us they had a wedding function on so couldn’t accomodate us. We are now left with confused guests and no venue able to host us at such short notice. It’s astounding that they forgot they had something so large as a wedding booked, and only informed us 4 days before the event. It demonstrates a lack of care for their guests, poor customer service and terrible event management. I wouldn’t risk booking here if you want to guarantee your event goes forward. Because even a confirmed booking and several discussions with their team doesn’t guarantee your spot.

I can't comment on food because we only had drinks but the staff were incredible. So attentive and friendly. Drinks choices were minimal bit fine. In all, it was a decent experience.

Had a lovely pre-theatre meal here. We decided on sharing and ordered 2 entrees, the lemongrass pumpkin rice balls and salt & pepper style squid and 1 main, the barbeque pork & prawn fried rice. The serving was perfect for two to share and it came really quickly. The rice balls were full of flavour and the squid was cooked to perfection. There wasn't a whole lot of flavour to the fried rice but it was a good side dish to compliment the others. We loved our cocktails and coffee too!

Walsh Bay Kitchen is a restaurant and bar in the Rocks. Our group ordered from the pre theatre menu before a Sydney Theatre Co production. The food was sophisticated, delicious and beautifully presented (see photos). Their service was quite fast as well, which is appreciated when on a timeline!

Pre show dinner. The food was good and enough. Don't lean on the table, you'll get stuck. Post review reply : Haha, lovely response from the owner. Much appreciated ❤️

Arrived an hour and a half before the play. Very slow service!!!
Didn’t get one of the courses as we had to leave and it was no where in sight.
We had asked for the bill and course to come with time to spare but still didn’t come.
Was just told they’ll serve it, after we explained we had to leave.
We had to get up and go to ask for the bill.
My pork was so tough, I could barely cut it with my knife.
Overall, a terrible with poor service and horribly cooked pork and didn’t receive the whole order despite making them aware of the time limit. No apology, just told I could come back afterwards to eat it. Then told I just wouldn’t be charged for it as the solution, despite it being apart of a lunch deal.

My gran took us here for dinner as a Christmas present before seeing Muriel's wedding last night. Our entrees were awesome and drinks and wine perfect.
When it was time to order mains my gran asked if it would be possible to have prawns on the seafood noodles instead of squid, our waiter shook her head and replied no not possible. I ordered the seafood noodles and my gran went with something else. When my noodles came out they had prawns on them? The menu said nothing about there being prawns on the noodles and had it said so I would never had ordered the noodles as I hate prawns.
No one came to check if we were happy after having a few bites of our meals which having worked in hospitality before I thought was some what expected when you're paying so much for your food? I ate my meal dodging the prawns waiting to catch our waiters attention to say something but it wasn't until 30 minutes later and my food was cold and half eaten that she came over to clear our dishes. I did say I was not happy but wasn't really met with any apology or solution.
Very disappointing to spend so much on a meal and walk away unhappy and unsatisfied due to poor menu knowledge and mislabelling of menu items.

Started with the green room cocktail which was delicious. Unfortunately when a second round was ordered it was like the bartender let the bus boy have a go. It tasted of a shot of lemon juice (supposed to be fresh apple, basil & a hint of lemon). The chicken pork dumplings were delicious but very overpriced for the size. We paid for the canapes & champagne experience inbetween our show. What a disappointment. We were given a tiny green bean salad, a piece of salmon on endive & a piece of poached chicken on lettuce. Considering it cost $37.75 a person it was pretty disappointing. They did generously top up our champagne but you can only really drink so much at an enjoyable pace in 20 mins. Wouldn't go back nor reccommend it to friends.

Gone to the theatre and still chewing the slow roast beef signature dish.

The Pork entree had a funny smell to it. And the watermelon salad was soggy. It was though the meals had been sitting there all day or perhaps last week.

We were there in plenty of time and three courses came out one after the after.

It was quick but not enjoyable. I hope they get their menu sorted soon.

Oh gosh. I wanted to write a positive review here but we were so disappointed.
Went here for lunch with clients. We were the only ones in the restaurant at 1pm on a Tuesday so the ambience want great. Further, even though we were the only customers, the service was so slow. The waiters inattentive and were very inflexible when it came to slight menu modifications.
We hopes to have the full menu but they served only am express menu which didn't have a lot of choice.
Would go back here in a hurry. The food was okay- but for the area and setting- they could do so much more! Wasted opportunity.

Absolutely loved it! Almost exclusive use of the restaurant due to no show and very well looked after. The pork was definitely a hit and the affogato was yummy, even more if you add a sneaky shot of frangelico!

Are you making the most of the Sydney Festival? Why not take advantage of Walsh Bay Kitchen's special Sydney Festival menu. With a glass of wine and two courses for $49 or three courses for $59. MW and I head there for a relaxing dinner. MW and I catch a bus to Walsh Bay as it's such a hot day. Otherwise it would have been a nice walk from the city via Barangaroo. For full review including photos, go to the blog post for all the goss

Very good lunch with work. Service attentive and accommodated easily. Will definitely recommend as it also was a good value ($19 for a meal and a drink)

Went there on friend's recommendation, It was a night with ''no show'' meaning that the restaurant wasn't as full as it is usually because the Roselyn Packer Theatre didn't have any representation at the time.
The restaurant had a very nice cosy/comfy vibe, we were warmly welcomed and decided to sit outside. My friend and I order the 2 course formula, and decided to start with a cocktail (the green room and an expresso martini, both fantastic!) while waiting for the food.
I had the Pork, tender and tasty and my friend had the Salmon, fresh and flavoursome. the dessert were great, the originality to it was the gluten free chocolate cake, not that we needed it but we found quite rare to have this kind of option.
The experience was very good, food service and atmosphere, we don't give much feedback on the place we visit usually but this little gem definitely deserve it. We are looking forward to return on a busy show night!

Restaurants have basically two potential paths for success – either they develop and execute a fantastic menu offering value and taste or they can find a location where a captive market will eat there. The Walsh Bay Kitchen is situated right next door to the Sydney Theatre Company, a relatively captive market!

We began with the Confit Duck although, when the dish was served, the appearance was fairly unrecognisable. It would be unkind but not inaccurate to say it vaguely resembled canned tuna.

Our other starter was the Raviolo covered in an enormous dollop of tomato sauce. After a healthy dose of much-needed seasoning it was not too unpleasant.

For main we had Minute Steak, a normally cheap cut, and pork chop! The thin piece of steak was over cooked to a point that heavy carving with steak knife was required. Pork chop was an improvement, but the pomegranate seeds were completely incompatible with the meat and chips.

One particular desert deserves a special mention - the chocolate brownie which was made memorable by the incredibly zesty lime sorbet. The chef must have thought it was a good idea to combine chocolate and such sharp citrus flavour on the same plate! The almost untouched dessert should send a strong feedback to the kitchen.

As for alcohol, the Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc were not bad but the cocktails were every bit as good as the food after twenty minutes or so waiting.

If you are looking for a restaurant close to the Sydney Theatre Company before the show, you naturally would consider dining here. Only if the food delivers the same enjoyment as the show.

Located in Walsh Bay, next to the Roslyn Packer theatre, Walsh Bay Kitchen is convenient if you're heading to see a theatre production next door. It's a huge space accomodating lots of guests and you can sit indoors or out. A stylish bar and dimly lit lights, it has a nice buzzing ambience about it. Staff were extremely friendly, and service was prompt. I had an apple cocktail which I quite liked. I had a sauvignon blanc, the house one. I think next time I would order a pricier one. We were in a group sampling the Sydney Festival menu where you get a glass of wine and two courses. I had the arancini - 4 pieces with a nicely crunchy outside and a dense, cheeses filling. I personally quite liked these. My husband had the salad. For mains I had a 'minute steak' with kipfler potatoes. It was drenched in sauce and being minute steak, it isn't high quality and was cooked quite rare - I didn't like this so much, but the hubby finished it off. He got the pork which was really good, I sampled this too. Succulent and nicely seasoned, accompanied with thick cut chips. They gave us a sample of desserts to try and we had the affogato - this was pretty good. I also had some of the cheese platter. I didn't sample the other desserts, but there was a brownie, pannacotta and caramel sandwich. The other guests left promptly, presumably to go to a show. So this restaurant isn't fancy or a fine dining experience, but suitable if you're at the show next door.

Amazing location in walsh bay, walsh bay kitchen looked great as we entered, the restaurant was nicely packed on a wednesday night as there were many pre-theatre guests.

I ordered a tropical cocktail and my friend had a minty one. Mine tasted like a cup full of tequila, it was so strong i couldnt drink it, my friend didnt like hers too much either as it reminded her of listerine. Luckily i preferred her drink over mine so we swapped.

For entree we had duck confit and arancini balls. For some obscure reason the duck tasted like tuna sitting on a bed of lettuce, i gave the benefit of doubt and thought, well its only entree and all that lettuce was refreshing. The arancini balls were tasty and crunchy but really dense... the texture was lacking, still ok though.

For mains we had zucchini linguine and salmon. The salmon was tiny and overcooked whilst the linguine lacked flavour and the pasta wasnt the best (it was tough and chewy).

Come dessert we though this ought to impress us. I was excited about the dark chocolate cake with lime sorbet... unfortunately my excitement ceased as soon as i had a mouthful. The flavour did not go well together, the lime sorbet was so tart and so over powering that all I could taste was sourness. I wouldnt really call the chocolate cake a cake.. it resembled a doughy brownie (or at least thats how the two tasted together). Panna cotta wasnt bad , it tasted like custard and it was smooth.

On a side note the coffee was good and the wine was good. service was friendly, however the waitress was not attentive (in classy restaurant we'd expect the waiter/waitress to remember who ordered what).

Overall, i was unfortunately unimpressed... i hate giving bad reviews but i have to stay true to my reviews regardless of whether I'm invited or not... in this case, i couldnt give walsh bay kitchen more than a 2 for my experience

Disclaimer: we were kindly invited

We dined here on a Friday night before going to see the fabulous Fawlty Towers. In a word the food, beverage service and wait staff are all dreadful. The barramundi was over- cooked so was dry and was served with big cooked celery stalks in an mysterious odd and bland sauce. The starter of smoked trout was awful- the trout was all but warm, tasted like it came straight from the packet and was for some strange reason covered in masses of Maldon salt. The accompanying prawns were terrible- were deep fried and did not even taste fresh.
The barman is clueless as to how to make a drink properly. It was our first and definitely our last time to Walsh Bay Kitchen.
We chose to dine here to save the hassle of rushing from another restaurant to get to the show on time. For the quality of service that we received, we may as well have gone to Maccas for a quick bite. We had booked prior but were given a tall table, near the entrance and bar, not in the main restaurant area. This was not advised when we booked online, and the least we would have expected is for the restaurant to advise we would be sitting at a cramped shared table, and we could have chosen another venue. Not the most romantic start to a night out to celebrate a special occasion! No drinks were offered, nor even any water provided when we were seated. We needed to call a waiter later to ask for a drinks order and a bottle of water. The wine then did not arrive until after we finished our entrees. We had selected the 2 course + 1 wine set menu. When the entree's and mains were served it was not done professionally or with care. The waiters leaned over us and shoved plates into the middle of the table from one side. They did not serve from behind and place the plates in front of each of us. Kind of slap, bang here you go... Same with the wine. The meals were average at best, and not filling. One of the sides, the French fries was missed on our order and we had to call the waiter to bring them because they'd not taken the order correctly. They didn't arrive until we finished our mains. The wine was very acidic and we could not drink it. Either it was a very cheap wine or it was off. Throughout the night the staff were inattentive and we had to wave frantically at them to get any attention. Seemed they were just focused on rushing around and getting food on tables, not too much about etiquette or customer service. When getting our bill we complained about the wine, so they deducted the costs of the side orders to compensate. This was a fair offer, but to pay $90 for two of us considering the poor service we got, two average meals and wine we could not drink, it was not great value for money. Perhaps the management have been inspired by the theme of the show we saw, Fawlty Towers.... "Basilllllllllllllllllllll!!!!"

Appalling service. Did not receive our entree and we were accused of lying by the waitress when we told her of this fact.
Below average food.

Very disappointing - we were really looking forward to going back after last year's STC season. We used to be able to have dinner after the early shows - no more - we used to get good food - not any more - we used to get good service - not anymore!
I really could not recommend it. The 'bar menu' is supermarket fare placed onto plates - someone needs to let them know that pub food has improved in the past decade! The charcuterie board consists of 3 meats, pickled vegetables, a paste and bread sticks. I am not sure why they advertise the supper menu that is shown on the website - after a show you get exactly five choices for savoury food - really??
The wine list is average.
One annoying thing - when I rang to book the other night I specifically asked if they had the restaurant menu on - the said yes - the answer was no.

The service was shocking. We made a reservation but wasn't given a table when the restaurant was empty. When we finally got a seat, we found the food horribly cooked. The wagyu steak was bland, overcooked, dry and definitely wasn't worth the price paid for. It did NOT taste anything like wagyu. The serving staffs have absolutely no knowledge of the wine, and the food. Overall, it was a bad experience. Will never visit again.

This place has great ambience and knows how to get orders cookec quickly for hungry theatre goers who are on a tight deadline. The service is friendly and the food is fine.

I tried the duck which was supposed to be their signature main and, while it was well cooked, there wasn't much flavour. My friends thought the lamb was delicious but the barramundi was also lacking in flavour.

Desserts were good but the chocolate slice was very rich and even I (a huge dessert eater) couldn't finish it. Everything was well presented but a little more oomph in the taste department needed.

I’m surprised to find Braised Mushrooms Bibimbap ($24) on the menu at Walsh Bay Kitchen. With charred vegetables, pine nuts, brown rice and abundant slippery oyster mushrooms, it’s a bibimbap that warrants being eaten piecemeal, rather than mixed.Closer investigation, and a conversation with Korean Head Chef Kay Hwang, who last cooked at the Botanic Gardens, steers me towards his “very twisted” Jasmine Tea Smoked Duck ($31), which re-imagines kalbi beef rib marinade as a sauce
