Review Sonoma Cafe - Sydney

Rhys T
We had the plain croissant and a couple of other things with coffee--their pricing is higher than average but the quality was rather average. Didn't appear to be happy to see customers either.

Pleasant cafe with good coffee and healthy options. On the busy Danks St, it would be easy to walk past this place, but if you're after a quick easy meal this will be just what you're looking for. There is a small amount of seating inside, or for solo diners, you can easily sit at the bench at the front of the store. The food was fresh and delicious, a good casual option in the neighborhood.

This is my first time at the Waterloo café. It's a mere skip away from home and I'm surprised that I didn't know that until today. Located on one end of Danks street, it's small and quite easy to miss if you're not looking for it. I love the open windows which make it breezy and fresh, and lets the beautiful sun stream in. I had my usual order (that I order at almost every café) of a soy flat white and croissant. I devoured both in seconds and so do not have photographic evidence. Nothing to fault, I have had croissants from Sonoma before and they're always crispy and delectable! What I really came for was the chilli fougasse though, which I was told was only available on weekends. I've only had a small taste of it before from a colleague and I can't stop thinking about it! So guess who'll be stopping by on a weekend? 🙂

Bread is amazing. So many choices. And I’m French so I’m really peaky with bread. Staff is great and take time to find which bread would be best for you. Love this place!

Quite nice pastries and croissants, awesome bread, though had NO gluten free options! Disappointed to be honest. Coffee was too hot!

Have lived in the area for several years and the service here has been exceptional the entire time. The staff are amazing, personable, and really take time to care about each person (without making you wait! :P) The coffee is great, the bread is like no other, and the treats.... Don't tempt me. Thanks for always being legends!

Don't let the size of this coffee and bakery shop fool you, staff is always willing to help you and deliver the best service. My favourite is a large flat white and the cinnamon roll! Extra tip get your brekky early on a weekend!

Conveniently located on Danks Street, this cafe sells a variety of baked goods to tempt to you eat in or in our case, takeaway a few baked goodies to enjoy later.

Service is super friendly and although busy they were quite helpful. We got a loaf of Fig, Walnut & Raisin Loaf as well a Kouign Amman (a flatter type of croissant style pastry filled with pastry cream). Lovely tasty items. Could’ve easily walked off with so many more things!

Nice bakery with a nice choice of coffee bread and cakes. It is a brand so you can find their nice food in difference suburrb of Sydney. I already tried the one in Woollahra and the servie was perfect too. As i am from Britanny were the Kouign Amann are borned I had to try their pastry with Passion fruit . This is a combo that we never see in France but the taste was good and not too far from an original Kouign 5not enough butter maybe).
I also tried their cinnamon bun which was really tasty and and crispy. Perfect to start your day with a coffee.
Another time I tried their toasted sandwich and as they have very good bread of course it was very nice too.

Kicking off the day with their morning bun which is surprisingly soft and a little bit crispy outside
It was sweet so I'm not recommending it for those who doesn't like sweet as it is coated with sugar and cinnamon

Trendy little bakery cafe in the inner west. The benefit of a bakery cafe is the bread is top notch, it is the serious hero of their sandwich range. The sandwich selection is diverse, interesting and tasty. The staff were very friendly and combined with the simple but yum food made for a fun casual Sunday lunch. Prices are a little steep, however, like a tax for being trendy.

Open nicely and then early, offering a huge selection of different types of breads, coffee and huge sandwiches. I got Rye toast and a coffee - bread was extremely great and fresh and the staff member serving me was very nice.

Solid effort. Walking the streets makes me tired so a sugar hit was needed and this mocha flavoured pastry did the trick! Coffee creme patissiere and flaky butter pastry 👌

Menu came we ordered and looked on the board and it turns out half the menu isn't on the menu it's on the wall... That's ok though, if the waiter tells us about the menu on the wall.

The food is so average

Sonoma breads use simple ingredients like sea salt, sourdough starters and organic flour. Their signature creations are the Sonoma Miche, with a stand out caramelised crust and the Sonoma Mission, with a contrasting inside of custard feel covered by a golden chewy crust outside. There is also the pervasive and unique smoky flavour.....The inspiration for Sonoma bread came from the delights of wood fired ovens and naturally fermented ingredients. A hundred year old mixer from Bellata NSW came into the picture, together with some California influence in the form of American Allan Scott. Bellata lies in north central NSW between Narribri and Moree - and was the home base of the Sonoma founder's grandparents.Standards like soy and linseed plus walnut fig and raisin are available along side an eleven seed loaf and a Kalamata olive and herbs combo. The bite and look of the various breads here do stand out as being different.Muesli cookies are lovely to me but you can also have other options like raw natural, spelt, maple and almond plus honey and spice combinations.Coffee blends are divided into body and spirit labels. The former, which I prefer, is stronger, taste more nutty and earthy, suitable for milk based orders and has a buttery and velvety body. The latter has more complex sensations, with more of cocoa and fruity after taste, so they tend to be more acidic and body smooth. The Single Origins are from Ethiopia, Kenya and Guatemala.

Stopped in for a breakfast bruschetta and coffee... in all really great, service was excellent, pleasant atmosphere - highly recommended, worth a try if you are in the area.

•Baked eggs - your typical baked eggs, however lacks sauce to take it to the next level
•Atmosphere is relaxed, staff could be more attentive, menu is limited

Great ambience and friendly faces in this cafe. Good coffee and lunch options of healthy salads and sandwiches. Fresh high quality ingredients used. Great spot.

Beautiful coffee here and the staff were very friendly. Ideal for a weekend coffee and pastry! I will definitely come back to try the breads and pastries.

Sonoma bread is my favourite. If I'm in the area I have to stop and buy a loaf. We came also around Easter and the hot cross buns are amazing. Soooo good. The fruit loaf is great and the variety is huge. I've never had coffee here so I can't comment on that.

Only eaten here once, and I didn't like it. Coffee isn't to my liking either. But the bread is simply amazing. This is now the only place I buy my bread. The wholemeal miche is the best. I've tried a few different loaves but always come back to the miche.

My first café experience in Sydney. Nice environment, great service. Food wise, I found the chorizo and eggs to be just so so. Could be better. However the bread was good. Ordered a green tea, but didn't taste like it. Would come back for the bread. My friends thought the coffee was good.

Coffee is good here and the bread is amazing!
A good range of options.
We have been a few times whilst house hunting in the area, never disappointed.

Sorry Sonoma Danks st...I tried...I really did.. Yeah the coffee is good; there's no doubting it. But that could be said about every Sonoma.
But if you're happy to wait 10 mins to order then 15 mins for your coffee, get eye-rolled by staff and be given attitude when you get upset about the wait then yeah...I guess Sonoma Danks St is the place for you. They also just increased their prices with NO warning; I went from one day paying $3.50 for a double espresso to $4 the next day and had to wait an extra 10mins for it.

I have tried many times, hoping it would get better. I then switched to another cafe down the road but today gave Sonoma one last chance and it was exactly the same, I had to wait about 10mins despite there being NO line.

Their food is also GROSSLY overpriced for the small tiny portion you get. Yeah it's good...but if I pay $12 for muesli,...I expect more than (just less than) half a small bowl. Or $9 for a roll that fits in the palm of my hand.

Yeah I appreciate good coffee, but I also appreciate respect and good customer service. I can get good coffee down the road...

If you don't want to heed my warning, then I will give one piece of advice. If you walk past and the girl with the black short hair is on the till - DO NOT GO IN. She is the prime culprit for the long wait and poor attitude.

Sorry Sonoma, I tried....I really did. But I have been disappointed too many times.

I couldn’t go past the turkish eggs – sourdough with eggs, dukkah feta, olives, mint and lemon. WOW! Toasted sourdough topped with medium cooked eggs, nuts, seeds, feta and olives. It was oh so delicious – would it be bad to have this every day?

Least favourite place on earth. Appalling service. The staff are utterly grumpy and the level of disinterest in their clientele is unmatched. I will never set foot in here again. Ciao

In love with the zucchini, chickpea, & pecorino sandwiches. ... which is a shame, because they're $10 each, and I'm going broke. Still, they're the best!
Eric
Ok if you're into sourdough and self service.

The service here can be pretty slapdash. If you want anything more than a loaf if bread, take my advice and go to their larger, much friendlier branch on Birmingham Street in Alexandria.

The food is great but please remember to serve me. I really enjoy the food at Sonoma. It is fresh and clean tasting food with a lot of flavour. I have eaten there consistently every weekend for a long time. But I am wondering..is there a point when you say to yourself "they can only forget my food so many times before I say enough!" I have recommended Sonoma to a lot of people but always with the proviso that they accept that if the place gets slightly busy the staff can't cope and you will either never get your food or it comes a long time after you have reminded them they have forgotten you AGAIN! Today was the 4th time they have forgotten my food..they have taken the money, put the order into the system and then somehow he order goes into another planet and I am left parched and famished. So, one recommendation I would make is to go to Sonoma when the quiet time is upon us...not at brunch on a weekend...or even lunch...wait until the crowds, (or slightly busy clientele) have dissipated and then go. Then you will enjoy the food, the ambience and the generally pleasant service.

Toasted turkey, cranberry with melting Brie accompanied with the best coffee in Sydney. Absolute heaven! The coffee is bitey with strong flavours but without being bitter, really superb.
