Review Belljar - Sydney

Alana Sinclair
Amazing food and really friendly helpful service. We both ordered the mushroom roll which was delicious - definitely recommend ordering it for vegetarians and meat eaters alike. I couldn't eat one of the ingredients but they helped me out taking it off and substituting something I could eat that would balance the flavours out in the same way. They really wanted to make sure it tasted right. Oh, and great coffee too. Thanks guys!

Really nice spot to have a bite!! The menu is small but attention to detail is amazing, flavours are well balanced. Tasty!!

Excellent authentic chai latte, not too sweet, really honoured the spices in my beverage. The barista gave me my choice of animals to have milk. I assume they have multiple alternative milks, like soy juice and my personal favourite nut juice. I shall return to sample their delicious beverages once more. I may even partake in breaking my fast there, I shall report back if their sustenance is of standard.

I'd definitely put this on my list of the top five cafes in Sydney. There's not too much seating space in inside but it's part of the cozy atmosphere. On a sunny day take advantage of the outdoor seating. The staff members are very friendly and put in the effort to remember your name and your order. I just wish it was open a bit longer so I could grab some coffee in the afternoon. Also -- it's randomly closed some days and there's rarely a Facebook or Instagram post to give a heads up. But overall, I'd highly recommend it!

My partner had the smoothie bowl and I had the egg roll. Both were full of flavour and made very well. Coffee was good and the Chai tea was delicious - the spices really came through. Parking is also quite easy in comparison to other places in Marrickville. Definitely adding this to our favourite brunch spots.

Great music. Ample street parking. Wheel chair accessible. Some outdoor seats so would be ok for those with dogs etc. Lovely staff, especially the barista and person serving people. The person who prepares the food (curly hair) seems a little flustered, perhaps not someone who thrives on it being busy...it seemed like a struggle or perhaps just a bad m orning, but sure. Great casual interior with cushioned bench along the wall and attentive guy who takes the effort to greet everyone personally and help out others.

What a charming little coffee place. The coffee is excellent (as is the decor) and it's a most welcoming respite from the noise of King Street. Been here a few times and I've always enjoyed it. Worth the trip down Alice Street. Not eaten here other than to have a pastry, which was very nice.

Best coffee in Newtown hands down. I challenge you to find a better, consistently perfect coffee in the area without adding sugar. Never burnt and always deliciously creamy. Their blend and baristas are second to none.

The food here was really good and I was very impressed with the presentation.
The big let down is the timing/efficiency. Been here more than once and have been disappointed each time with how long it took for the food to come out, even when just ordering coffee.
Such a shame.

I purchase coffee here 4 days a week & we have lunch every few weeks. The coffee is delicious. New menu is yummy! & the staff are friendly & quirky just like the rest of Newtown.

*COFFEE ONLY REVIEW*
Best coffee in Newtown hands down. I challenge you to find a better, consistently perfect coffee in the area without adding sugar. Never burnt and always deliciously creamy. Their blend and baristas are second to none.

Bell Jar is our family's go to cafe for coffee in the weekend. The staff are friendly and very accommodating of our daughter who thinks she owns the place.

It's also away from the hustle and bustle of King St which is great way to relax while having a coffee

This is a nice little cafe on Alice St. The cafe is really chilled and easy. Great place to relax in the sun. Food is simple but pretty good.

Babes. Love this spot, great coffee and love the cute barista!

...the paper straw was a bad idea, because a smoothie is quite thick, the straw did soften easily and that made it harder to drink when you have a defunct straw. I'm also assuming that they used yoghurt to make this, maybe Greek because there was definitely that sour taste coming through which was interesting but I did feel that it masked the flavours of the fruits. As a suggestion for those that make smoothies at home, stick to a staple scoop of ice-cream or the sweeter varieties of yoghurt.

Belljar is one of those cute, hole in the wall, shabby chic, Nanna's front room type of coffee shops. An efficient duo behind the counter provide table service whilst making takeaway coffee for the regular stream of people drifting past. The breakfast and lunchtime menu is small but serviceable with sandwiches, toast and cereal on offer as well as a few muffins and cakes in the display. We went for a couple of coffees, a toasted Egg, Ham & Tomato Chutney Sandwich and, Muesli, Yoghurt & Berries. The food was prepared and served promptly. Nothing fancy but satisfying and certainly good value at under $10 each. The coffee on the other hand was a little on the small side for my liking, using cups better suited to demi tasse espresso than for skinny flat white. It tasted fine but I really didn't get much of a chance to enjoy it as it was finished before I started. The next size up is only 50c extra so I'll be going for a hopefully more satisfying cup next time.
Ghostface Villa
the one I had rocked the classic Allpress Espresso avocado, riccotta and lemon on sourdough with the game-changing addition of smoked salmon.
Corridor Kitchen
...Having wandered through Newtown a while, we arrived at Belljar coffee. It has a similar aesthetic to places like Miss Petty Cash and the aforementioned Kick Inside – knick knacks, bric-a-brac and retro furniture, classic espresso-coloured crockery offset by vintage teaspoons.
Heneedsfood
The menu is splashed up in chalk above the vintage wallpapered kitchen counter and features a bunch of Sonoma bread sandwiches, salads, breakfast plates and muesli. No eggs and bacon here folks
We Eat Out
Over priced coffee. Coffee is never hot enough although it's consistent! Too expensive for the area. Service is average with a little too much attitude for my liking. Great location and could really be one of the finest places in the area with a few changes.

Passable food with great coffee. The range of options on the breakfast menu was limited and wife and I both chose the salmon bagel, which was reasonable though took a little longer than I'd have expected to be served. The coffee however was really good and I ordered a second one which I rarely do. A vanilla milkshake which we split was also delicious and refreshing.

The best coffee I have tasted in a long time. Loved the fit out and the coffee was superb.

Delicious breakfast sandwiches. Most Newtowners probably don't even know Belljar is there, but a quick step down Alice Street and you will come across a cute 50s shopfront with an even cuter cafe holed up inside. Sure, it's a little hipster with it's concrete floors, exposed bricks and mismatched furniture, but the window seat is a great spot to eat one of the delicious breakfast sandwiches, drink a good coffee and watch the people coming and going from King Street.

Not a fan!. Hipster ville supreme... Complete poser ville, like don't go unless you've got yr retro gear on, poo brown cords and ray bands n hair in a man bun... Seriously if the coffee was consistent I may give it a brownie point, but I gave it my usual 3 strikes and your out, and each time I got charged different prices for a soy mocha, I thought 5.50 was a serious joke.. No can do. This is not on, Coffee is not nice. When the goodlooking man makes your coffee it's a lot nicer than the woman who seems to make ultra bad coffee on a sat.

The service here is excellent - really friendly and efficient staff. Consistently good coffee - up there with the best in Sydney and worth travelling for. Food is basic, but tasty enough and well priced.

Great little spot. Great service, friendly staff, kitch and well decorated, good music and they let you take your time, sit and enjoy whilst using the free wifi. Coffee is also excellent.

Cosy. I like this cafe. It's in a great street and has a relaxed atmosphere. It seems to be a family business and staff are friendly. Coffee was really nice and they were accommodating with food choices.

Lovin Belljar. Great atmosphere - the good coffee and food make this a really pleasant cafe for a relaxing drink or bite to eat any time of the week.

Not quite there. For me, nothing about this place quite hit the mark.
Matlock
This is a really nice homely cafe off the beaten track from King St, with great coffee, tasty sandwiches & good service. Definitely worth a visit!
Madam Wu
Ah-mazing coffee!. Strong, nice crema and good soy milk. Be aware that it has a minimal menu of sandwiches, breakfast plates (no eggs) and muesli, all prepared freshly to order. A nice, local-type find away from King St.
Shelley
Excellent coffee. Probably on par with cow and moon, maybe slightly better than shenkin (sorry shenkin!), and as always....out-classes campos!
Hungry
Like it. Ham cheese mustard sandwich is great

Hidden Gem!. Finally the torrential rain stopped in Sydney and we were blessed with a beautiful weekend! I made it my mission to go and visit a lovely little cafe I had previously spotted...Belljar.

After a leisurely stroll down Alice Street I arrived at Belljar....and what a lovely surprise! The place has a terrific atmosphere - a comfortable mix of retro and contemporary design fill the space creating a relaxing and intriguing setting.

The menu looked great too. I wanted to try so many of the menu options...but could not stop myself ordering the 'Prosciutto Breakfast Plate'....such a delicious selection of tastiness to mix and match with on the one plate. The coffee was superb to - I found myself getting another one to take away for my walk back!

Next time your around Newtown, take a break from the King St madness and wander down to this hidden gem. I know I'll be back to try some more of that menu.
