Review Soma - Sydney

Kay Whytock
Had a lovely breakfast here with my husband. We both ordered a brekky burger although I had gluten free bread with mine (which was really good!). They had a varied and tasty looking menu for breakfast, lunch and casual coffee with croissants and sweet treats. It's a shame that I'm not in Sydney for longer otherwise I would happily come back again. The lattes were very nice and the service was friendly and efficient. There's a decent amount of seating and the atmosphere is calm and quiet. A nice place to meet a friend or bring your book/laptop. Highly recommend :)

Excellent coffee, nice setting and good prices. Will come again in the future.

Great batch brews consistently. Also sells Mecca beans which is very convenient for your coffee bean fix

Soma uses Mecca coffee as their house blends - good temperature. We ordered Eggs Benedict and Ultimo Burger. Both were average but nothing really special. Good decoration and vibes.

A small portion of salad costs $14 maybe fine, but I really don’t like their attitudes while serving, ordering, or just being asked a simple question “can I get the menu?” I think this place really needs to improve their customer service quality May not go again

Great affordable coffee. I stuffed up my order and they fixed it no hassles. Appreciate it

Really good coffee with a nice atmosphere. Location makes it easy to spot. In terms of food, breakfast is offered before 11 and lunch is offered after 12. In between, there are only sandwiches. The place gets a mix of working professionals and a younger crowd.

Great coffee, great atmosphere! All you could ask for in a great cafe!

I’ve been here a few times now for breakfast and lunch and quite like the place

The bacon and eggs, for breakfast is a good choice with a good portion size.

The burger here was fantastic, the shake was pretty decent too. The coffee here is pretty good.

The price was a tad more then I was willing to spend but worth it. The service was ok, nothing special. I wouldn’t mind trying it out again sometime soon.

Excellent muffins and proper chai lattes. They make their own food rather than buy it in from some dodgy cafe supplier. A big plus for Soma’s kitchen. This is why it was packed. They should open up another in the cbd.
Tasty Treats
Small cafe on a corner but handily situated near the Ultimo TAFE and UTS (and the ABC studios). A short but healthy menu (with a couple of staples and treats in the cold display). I had the kale Caesar salad. The salad was vegan so I added chicken but to be honest, it would have been fine without. Serving size was huge and I can honestly say it was THE most amazing Caesar salad I’ve ever had! I will definitely got back to try other items, or just for that salad again.

My soy flat white was perfectly not butter, hot and filled with caffeine. Good service and prompt coffee orders. Great corner shop with a slightly dark atmosphere but convenient and friendly.

Happy friendly staff and really efficient service :-) Great Rwandan on the single origin today and the sourdough bread they use is perfect. Not usually one to write a review but my pit stop here this morning was an absolute day maker. Thank you Soma !!

Found this cafe in Chinatown which serves vegetarian & vegan food as my colleague is a vegetarian. I liked my Kale Caesar,
chopped kale & cos, croutons, crispy capers, beetroot, bacon & creamy cashew dressing. Felt super healthy eating it! It enabled me to indulge in a dark chocolate macadamia brownie which was addictive. My colleague liked her nourish bowl too. A place to keep in mind for healthy food!
Cool Beans Life
Formerly Mecca Ultimo, this recent expedition maintains its roots in fantastic coffee while also adventuring into newer pastures. I would highly recommend their ice teas, sold in small glass jars, they have some interesting mixes that delight. The crowd is always an eclectic mix of students, professionals and entrepreneurs, which always makes for interesting conversation!

Up here for work, Don't come here for the food menu: not a great selection and normally burnt and mediocre. The best thing about this place is the hot drinks, the hot chocolates, the chai lattes, the coffee. I would recommend it as a great place to grab your take away coffee or to catch up with friends for coffee however don't think about ordering a bite.
-recommend their chai lattes
-recommend their hot chocolates
-recommend their coffees

the coffee shop is just opposite my school so it's really handy to go. Staffs was nice and polite, drink was great but i cant say the same for the burger, it was a little bit too salty, but overall nice experience

Shakshuka eggs and double espresso. Eggs were delicious, and runny - amongst a rich chunky tomato sauce. Dish was spiced well and was great. Only thing letting it down was the average pitta. Double espresso was a little short but had a great finish. The place is trendy with dark colours, and had a relaxed vibe. Would recommend.

I ordered a Magic (Coffee - Double Ristretto, 3/4 Milk), they brought me a cappuccino with 3/4 Milk.
My breakfast was poached eggs on sourdough, eggs had no run too them at all, toast burnt, plate small and overflowing hard to cut and eat items together.
Expected more from the look of the venue.
Keep On Eating
Good coffee - popular amongst workers & uni students in the area. Went for morning breakfast and ordered poached eggs on sourdough with extra bacon, wait wasn't long and service was quick.
Christine
Good, reliable coffees can be found here alongside some pretty friendly staff. Food is pretty average though - especially considering the prices they have mains at.

Pitaaaa, Chicken Pitaaa oh how I adore you. Chicken was nice-cooked&tender the whole dish was flavourful with spices, reminding me of indian food😁😄

To go with that was the cold-drip coffee ☕ served in a jar which was coool though I wasn't sure if putting sugar in a cold beverage would dissolve sooo...hehe I decided to face the bitterness full on! More bitter than I expected it to be 😂

Staff were really nice & patient, food came out really quickly and portions are decent sizes~

Pretty, pouting staff in black dishing up usual cafe fare, bae roll, croissant, kale super salad, shakshuka. Latte a tad too creamy and weak for me. Nice packaging though.

This café is over-hyped. I went in with great expectations of a huge big breakfast with the lot. But was disappointed to see that they didn't have one. So instead i was left with a sandwich. That's not to say the sandwich wasn't good, it was a great sandwich just i guess i expected more

On a positive note, their coffee was quite nice, it wasn't too milky and was definitely strong enough for my liking.

The service was great and the food was delicious. We ordered ham and cheese croissant and the egg & bacon roll. Staff were friendly and food was prepared instantly. They don't take eftpos which was okay because they have their own ATM :) Overall it was a great place to have breakfast!
La Petite Bobo
I have coffee here nearly every day, being just around from my uni campus. The coffee is always great and the staff are excellent. It's perfect for a quick lunch too!

Serving Bircher muesli in a jar is an interesting idea but not very practical given that the spoon i received didn't really fit inside the narrow vessel.

Nice place. Food isn't extraordinary but it is pleasant. The menu variety isn't large. Granola and fruit rather flavourless - only came with one strawberry :(

Food comforts in the form of a grilled sandwich and Mushroom baked eggs. Toastie and mushrooms please!

Overall, Mecca is kinda brilliant. Its balanced coffee is a winner with a very fruity, well-developed flavour – just drinkable. Whilst the coffee shop feel may not suit everyone (food is a little lacking, I reckon, to score best café ever). There is simply nothing in the area that to compare it with and coffee-wise little in Sydney to compare it with. It would be an insult to call this the ultimate Gloria Jeans, but shit it should be, wish all chains would pull this weight. Mecca will leave you highly satisfied and will surely draw you back, if not for the coffee, but even just for the free coffee cupping sessions on Fridays.
The chicken sandwich is plain but good. Cold roast chicken and crisp lettuce is a good combination with the soft sourdough and I quickly polish it off.

Mecca is one of the prettiest cafe I've ever been, and I strongly reckon that they should also win for their amazing iced chocolate.
Eating In Sydney
It was silky smooth and had a beautiful organic taste. Definitely one of the top coffees I’ve ever had!
Corridor Kitchen
The flavour was creamy and rich and it was nice to sit for a while and not worry that we were taking up a table. I’m used to the cramped cafés of Newtown and surrounds which are generally pretty tiny, not the kind of places where you could spend the whole morning.
Fatboo
They knew what a magic was and made a decent version of it. And their piccolos also came out satisfying enough.

Voted as Best Cafe by the Sydney Morning Herald Good Cafe Guide 2011. Mecca can be found on the corner of Harris and Ultimo Road. Mecca offers diners both breakfast and lunch (menu is simple but excellent!) and that perfect cup of coffee! Skim flat white - perfection in a cup! The aroma, the acidity, the flavour - excellent!

Mecca coffee is worth the accolades - full-bodied, intense but balanced and without any residual bitterness. We've gone through a range of flat whites, cappuccinos, lattes and iced coffees. Even the mocha gets a chirpy thumbs up by the Sugar Addict, revelling in the rare marriage of strong coffee with bittersweet chocolate.

The coffee offering is serious; courtesy of the boutique roaster The Little Marionette in Annandale. The house blend – ‘Diego’s Stretch’ – is full-bodied and specially roasted for Shorty.
Coffeefan
Milky nothing coffee and sullen bored staff. Reminds me of a Gloria Jeans in quality. Strange because their beans have such a good reputation.

Cash only...C'mon guys - step up your game its the 21st century. Went to buy a long black only to be told l have to pay with cash...slightly annoyed

told there is an atm in the corner, take out some money, whilst waiting get to chat with the barista

informed that the atm in the corner ( the one that charges $2.50 ) is apart of the cafe, and they make money out of it...NOT HAPPY at all

end up paying $5.90 for this particular coffee ( including the atm charge ) - not going back ever again to this greedy cafe

seriously, get a bloody eftpos machine, mobile POS machine or accept BITCOIN and stop this madness & greed

First visit and disappointed (Breakfast). Whenever I passed by Mecca Espresso it seemed to be always packed, even at a 07:30 weekday morning there were already a few people inside. The environment itself is quite inviting and the staff was friendly, however when the shakshouka came whatever good vibe I had about the café went down the drain. I had expected to enjoy rich flavours with this dish but all I received in my mouth was an overwhelming saltiness, and to my horror there were small bits of eggshell as well. Considering the popularity of Mecca Espresso and the cost of this dish, I was certainly quite unimpressed. Coffee was nice though with fruity aftertaste.

We live locally and found the place average for a couple of reasons.

-No eftpos
-Took a while to bring the simplest of dishes (poached eggs with bacon and Bircher muesli)
- When the Waiter brought out the food he put it on the wrong table. Then when they realized he took the plates from the other table and gave it to us (likely it was still u touched). Personally find this a bit gross!
- Poached eggs were overcooked

Overall the food tasted nice but the experience was negative.

Love stopping through here when I'm in Sydney. However - do NOT go here for breakfast if you need to eat gluten free. There are NO gf breakfast options any more :( Very disappointed.

I just made an urban spoon account then so the world could know that the kale super salad with chicken from this place is OFF THE CHAIN. My insides are smiling. Coffee is rad too.

Meh.... I'm always hearing praise about Mecca Espresso. I've been to Mecca 3 times now and I have no idea why it's so popular. Sure its interior is cool, contemporary and chic, but its coffee just doesn't hit the mark. Every time I've been I've been severely underwhelmed- the coffee is not worth the wait (sometimes +10mins in the morning-although I dont mind waiting for a great cup of coffee). Their coffee (despite ordering double shots every time) is always weak. Their special blends are nothing amazing either. Despite the comparisons I've heard being made, Mecca certainly does not compare to Melbourne's Baba Budan's Seven Seeds Coffee
To their defence, their food looks pretty darn good and I've been told it tastes great. There are plenty of other places to go in the Ultimo/Broadway area for coffee-I would suggest giving somewhere else a go.

More talk than substance.

Cappuccino woes. Consistently bad takeaway cappuccinos. So milky it ́s like a latte and because of the fruitiness of the coffee it tastes quite sweet. I started asking for 3/4 but in the end really just would like a full takeaway cup of coffee that tastes like coffee. I work next door and I ́m not the only one looking for coffee elsewhere.

Limited menu but consistently great coffee. A great place to buy beans and get them freshly ground to take home too.
