A great cafe but opening hours are really unclear and actually not sure if it’s even open any more. Used to love visiting but last few attempts the cafe has been closed despite being during advertised opening hours...

Sneaky skim cap between brunches to get my metabolism burning. This little cafe was tucked away inside a little courtyard. Cappuccino was beautifully smooth - pleasure to drink and no overtones of bitterness.

Great location tucked at the back of a beautiful old building on Darling street, Hunter Works invites you via the side alleyway or through the main entrance. Happening dudes added to the mood along with a Spotify soundtrack.
The menu is a little limited but covers off the usual breakfast choices with a little twist by way of addition of a strong flavour - my smokey salsa dish by way of a spicy relish. I was a little underwhelmed on the food. Excellent coffee though.
Overall, great atmosphere and space to hang out and have a chat. Limited menu and choice of pastries etc but that is a minor point.

Tucked behind darling street this is a cute little cafe spot and one for the list if you are solo. Great coffee but a pretty simple menu. That said what they do they do well. The menu changes but when I was there I could not go past the black rice porridge and poached pear - delicious! This place has a great vibe and coffee to match.

I love everything about this little gem of a place.  The food (in particular their smoked fish dish is worthy of inclusion on the menu of a hatted restaurant), the coffee and the people that serve you there.  The friendliest, most helpful service you could wish for and dishes made with first class produce make me want to go back time and time again and recommend this place highly to everyone.

Balmain is a great inner city suburb for cafes and brunch, one which I don’t visit as often as I’d like. However on the days when I do decide to give my body a good 7km workout at the Bay Run, Balmain is an easy stop for (well deserved) feed. The Hunter Works in Balmain is an unassuming cafe with a great little court yard. Don’t pay attention, and you’ll walk straight past this gem, as it’s hidden inside a narrow laneway.

The thing I enjoyed most about The Hunter Works was the set out and where it is located. It’s easy to miss if you don’t look out for the easel sign which directs you into a narrow corridor of a dark building. I loved how it was hidden from the road, and once you walk in you’re met with a lovely courtyard set up with a bunch of tables. It actually doesn’t really feel like the outside because the actual inside of the café is all open so nothing is blocked off, and also because it’s a part of the building it’s in. It is however still pet friendly, and staff seem to welcome them, as they were super friendly and interested to know about my dog. The location seriously gives off the best vibes ever, almost like it’s a secret getaway spot, although I highly doubt this is actually the case.

The food combinations were also quite interesting. One thing’s for sure, all the ingredients were extremely fresh and food took quite a bit to come out which only highlighted the care and attention given to each dish. I did find the dishes to be quite pricey, especially for the amount given however quality of ingredients could not be denied. The smoked fish with radish, cos lettuce, fennel, snow peas, and chili mayo was an absolute delight, but the very few pieces of fish did not help make it feel more like a light salad rather than a lunch main. And at $21.50 it wasn’t like we could order another one altogether.

I preferred the carrot dish over the fish, which came with wild rice, carrot puree, egg, and a black rice vinegar dressing. Carrots have only recently started to grow on me (previously they were the only thing I refused to eat, and apples but that’s a completely different reason), and this dish has certainly given a +1 to the vegetable. The dressing was light but enough to make a statement, and the crunchy rice mixed well with the puree. Again, this was not a hearty dish but indeed tasty. Coffee deserves a thumbs up too, it was really well made!

I do want to go back because I truly love the ambience, but worry about the portions. Knowing my wallet will cry if I am to be completely full and satisfied here, I wonder if maybe I’m just in the wrong neighbourhood!

Wow - I like this place! Set back in a lovely little dark building - gentle on the eyes, always appreciated in the morning. I had the toast with chorizo, goat curd, honey and banana. Lovely sweetness, saltiness and savoury flavours worked well together. The toast was crisp. The edible decorative flowers made the dish look beautiful.

I had the dark hot chocolate, I was sad it was in a tiny glass but it was delicious and dark, really well done. It's always nice when businesses put thought into hot chocolates - I know coffee and fancy juices are where the most attention is focused but I'm always more in love with hot chocolate or milkshakes.

Highly recommended.

Tucked away down a lane off the bustling Darling St, this place offers a an interesting menu with a quirky take on the traditional cafe scene.

We ordered the smoky chipotle salsa w/ soft boiled eggs, toast & rocket salad as well as the second dish of mushroom w/ chorizo & tarragon aoli. Breakfast full of interesting flavours.

The service was efficient & well priced & a great alternative to the standard scrambled eggs & breakfast. 👍

In order to give the most accurate and most informative Café’ Reviews, I am one of the few Google Reviewers that judges my reviews on the following 6 points. 1. Service; Friendly service by the wait staff and barista’s in a clean environment, with clean facilities (even though, they are shared with another business, when I went in – everything was clean and well stocked. 2. Coffee; African blend made in Chatswood – I ordered the cappuccino - it was fast, hot and strong, exactly the way I like it. 3. Vibe; cool and chilled out vibe-with soft music in the background – not overly loud. 4. Cleanliness; Ultra-clean tables with beautiful table decorations and clean bathroom facilities. 5. Food; I had the pulled pork with with pecan and maple slaw, with dried rosemary and chipotle aioli on a freshly made bagle (made in their kitchen, not brought in). Looked good enough to be considered as fine dining for breakfast, but, this is all part of what sets this café’ apart, every coffee and every dish served gets the chef-owners approval before it goes out. This is what you get served on the daily in this new café’ (opened for around one month, when I reviewed it). The owner has worked in some really great kitchens in England, and in the Eastern Suburbs where he amassed his finesse, his attention to detail and good wholesome yummy tasting food skills. I think he may even have a couple of Michelin stars under his belt??... 6. Signature foods/point of difference; FREE WIFI! This café’ is doing away with plastics to do their bit for climate change, which scores highly for me. They also make their own bagels, brownies and on the weekends the chef makes his own brand of signature chocolate muffins. The pastries are brought in fresh each day. Small café’ off-street with a cosy and cool vibe. Small things like the attention to detail on the table decorations… the coconut chia pods with chocolate soil are all made in house as well. There is also free parking on Little Street (subject to availability for 2 hours at the back of the Café’) Otherwise, you can get free 30 minute parking on Darling Street, or pay for 1 hour parking (1.00 – 5.00 approx). I paid $20.00 for my cappuccino and bagel and pulled pork and pecan and maple slaw – which was reasonable price to pay given the average costs in Balmain, service, the quality and presentation of the food. I also tried their in-house made brownies, and they were a sweet, moist, almost sticky -like chocolate lovers dream, worthwhile trying these, they are very moorish, have two if your feeling depressed or feel like sharing it with a loved one :) – Taste sensation and a taste-bud treat!! Well done, keep it up - 5 out of 5. I will be back... #thehunterworks #mysydneycafereviews

Quality. Would go back. Would not notice it walking past if it wasn’t for the sign. It’s a little cafe inside the building. No real street view. Bagels were great and staff were friendly. The chef not only took out order but made the food as well. He even thought me how to poach an egg. What a champ! I still suck a poaching eggs though.

Blink and you’ll miss this place. Hidden off the main road, the Hunter works produce some quality food and coffee. Owners and staff are very accommodating. Warm, cosy and family friendly cafe. Small deli and retail section is a delight. 👌🏼

Really good coffee (Gabriel), and quick/friendly service. Boyfriend had bacon and egg bagel and loved it... And he doesn't even like bagels much. I had corn fritters which were very flavourful and spicy. Will def return.

Fantastic! Coffee is some of the best I've had in Sydney (and therefore the world), staff are friendly and very willing to chat about the beans of choice, food is delicious (goats cheese, chorizo, banana and honey, just do it) as are the juices! Also good value compared to all other cafes in Balmain/Rozelle area. The best choice for brunch.

The staff here are so lovely! Really sweet and accommodating. I think it's a new owner? But similar as before. Coffee is great and food is so fresh and delicious. It's a little undercover courtyard at the back of the building.
