Review Fish Frenzy - Hobart

AD Baillie Varga
My gorgeous fiance Darren Baillie took me out to dinner. We had the seafood platter which was so amazing, highly recommend it. We had an amazing night as Gary the manager was so friendly and fuss over us. Always checking to see if we needed anything which was very nice as he had so much waiters that could have done it. 10/5/22

Caters to food allergies with attentive and genuinely kind service. Many gluten free options. I'm allergic to onion and they made adjustments easily as it is freshly made to order. The freshest of the fresh seafood. You won't experience oily chips either. Bloody delicious. I will be back. Would give more than 5 stars.

Good food down on the dock. Went with friends when on a weekend in Hobart. Had chips and salad. It was hard to fit any more food in as we’d been eating all weekend!

Fish and chips done right can send anyone into a frenzy and that is exactly what happens here. We had the blue eye travella that was battered that sends your senses into a frenzy. The batter is one of the best around being light and airy. Definitely, one of the best fish and chips.

I had a battered fish and salad, partnered with a glass of cider. Perfect way to spend a lunch time! Fish Frenzy is located right on the wharf front overlooking the ocean, really is a fabulous location and stellar view. Staff where polite and helpful, service excellent and fish cooked to perfection! Salad was also lovely, perfect size; I left feeling happily contented and not over full. Would happily come here again, a recommend from me!

Went there twice for lunch during our recent short break in Hobart, food, service, location all top notch & super fresh & nice local wine list

Lovely food, nice view of the harbour, service was ok. Worth a try.👍

We have tried many chowders locally and overseas and sadly this one comes in last. Lacking any real flavour. Gained an extra star for 4 prawns and the location but otherwise overly disappointed as this was our last meal in Hobart.

As a travel agent I am always on the lookout for a good recommendation on a local restaurant. FF certainly has my tick of approval. The platter served my hungry family of four with a fresh tasteful variety of local seafood. It represented great value for money but also high quality seafood, which to be honest is a rare find. A real gem! Give it a go ...will not disappoint.

Probably the best cooked scallops ever in my life! Speedy and friendly service with a good selection of wines by the glass. Would like my chips to have a crisper outer but overall this was great food at a competitive price with good views over the port.

Buzzy vibe on a wet Sunday night. Attractive evening sky to watch from our window table for two. Pretty tasty fish wrap and fish frenzy (crumbed scallops, calamari rings and two pieces of fish, with chips) both served in the signature paper cone on a plate. For the location the drinks prices are to be expected I guess. We stuck with water having already had an afternoon drink elsewhere. Should tartare sauce be extra, really? Sitting outdoors in the summer would be mighty fine.

Amazing service. The staff are so friendly and genuine. We didn't know what wine to order so they let us taste both before we bought. The food was fresh and delicious, we got the platter for two and it was amazing!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Fresh seafood straight from the grill to the plate into ma belly 😋

Service was ok, but the food quality was very disappointing. As visitors would have thought the food would have been better, since the restaurant is located on the wharf. Fish was dry, calamari was like chewing rubber. Will not be going back sorry
Diana Paul
Fresh, fast and full of flavour with fabulous service, would recommend even to the fussiest of foodies. Thanks for a great dinner

The restaurant was busy and the staff got me onto a table quickly, ordered and fed in record time. I had the Fish Frenzy (mixed seafood & chips in a paper cone). The kitchen closes earlier than expected. Will definitely go back

I had Salt n Pepper Squid w' salad - the salad compliments the squid so well, the squid was cooked perfectly & the meal is huge. If you've never tried hot pippin cider go here - it is so moreish, just yum! I had a great night :)

It used to be that each time I’d come back to Hobart I’d enjoy a meal at Fish Frenzy. However, it seems that each time the prices have gone up, and the portions have gotten smaller. This time, my two fillets of fish were each smaller than the palm of my hand, and the scallops were so small, it looked like regular sized scallops cut in half. This wouldn’t be so bad if the seafood was amazing, but it is actually pretty average. Do yourself a favour, there are plenty of better seafood places on the wharf. Even your basic fish punt will give you larger portions for practically half the price.

After visiting MONA, we got back to the pier at 12.30pm on a Sunday and I was worried we wouldn’t be able to get a table, but inside there was plenty and we just missed the big groups that walked in after we placed our orders.<br/><br/>While it’s a nice location with friendly services, the food is overpriced and average. We ordered the chowder and fish frenzy which was okay, not amazing! My son has the shark attack (kids meal) and we also shared a garden salad.<br/><br/>Worth trying if your in the area and feeling like fish and chips.
Joey Lee
Recommended by our tour guide and decided to try it out for dinner. Fish was alright but I’d recommend to avoid the breadcrumbs and go with tempura or beer batter. Chips were kinda average.
Mumu
Being in Tasmania, we were expecting delicious fresh seafood but what we got was sadly quite average. We ordered the Fish Frenzy. All the seafood were overcooked. The grilled octopus was mostly salad and a few octopus which was nice and tender but needed more flavour. The chowder was ok. We were just expecting a lot more for the price we paid.

Being in Hobart for the weekend my wife and I came across fish frenzy and decided to check it out. The prices are not cheap but the staff are friendly and the food is tasty. We paid $23.50 for the fish frenzy which consisted of two crumbed fish three calamari and a couple of scallops and chips. Basically except for the chips the prices were only suitable for a young child so if you are hungry you need to pay $15 for two pieces of fish <br/>

Great place for fish and chips! Fuss-free service and takeaway. My food was served piping hot straight from the kitchen! Good quality seafood and the chips were perfectly fluffy inside and crispy outside.

Food 3/5<br/>Service 4/5<br/>Environment 4/5<br/><br/>The food looks so good but tastes just average level. The view of the restaurant is fantastic. The beer tastes good too. But the fish tastes not that fresh and chips are too soft. We tried fish frenzy and 22 dollars is not valuable.
Stefan
Very average fish and chips and pricey for what you get. We got the Fish Frenzy. The scallops were tiny! I had to look for them on my plate because I thought they forgot them. Stick with the fresh platter, it was much better.<br/><br/>During the meal 23 Asian tourists stormed the restaurant and took the surrounding tables and setup right next to us. The staff should have controlled the situation and set them up properly instead they set themselves up! One of the tourists apologised for being so close which was nice of him.<br/><br/>There are way better fish and chips elsewhere, save your money and go elsewhere.

This is my favourite place for fish and chips in Hobart. Delightful staff who seem to really care about their customers - including the four legged variety. If I'm craving scallops this is where I go as they are always fresh and beautifully cooked.

Located perfectly on the Elizabeth Pier. <br/>Ambience : 4/5. Spacious dining area. Busy but manageable. Simple ocean themed deco and beautiful view of the pier. <br/>Food : 4/5. Delicious homemade crowder. Fresh and full of flavour. Ordered the fish and chips; it was crispy and not too oily. Fish was fresh. <br/>Service : 4/5. The waitress was very attentive. Ordered and the cashier and the food not long after.

I expected sort of a fancy restaurant with some good vibes but it is not. Here is just a simple and easy place to grab average sea food. Everything is okay - not so good or bed either.
Apple Fung
Very nice fish! It’s crispy and tasty. And the “today special” tomato shop( I forgot the long name) is so delicious with so many seafood inside . I don’t think it only deserve a 3.6 points in Zomato!!!
Jen
My first meal in Hobart and was so excited but it wasnt fresh ! We had scallops and calamari. Seems to be be busy each night we have been here though so I don’t know if it was just a one off. Murres lower deck was so so much better and fresher !
Recovering Ice-cream Addict
Nice location, we sat outside with a great view of the pier, friendly staff with quick service. And most importantly - decent fish and chips and not overpriced.
Finn & Filo Downunder
Fish Frenzy is easygoing and simple looking restaurant at old warehouse building at the pier. Nice chairs and tables and tableware. Friendly staff as (it seems to) always here in Hobart.<br/><br/>Had fantastic fish chowder for lunch. Must say that absolutely top 5 what have what have eaten! A bit pricy perhaps, but it had delicious scallops (with roe), prawns and some really nice fish... <br/><br/>Other food seemed to be fresh fish and chips, grilled seafood and nice option of salads.
Swechha Shrestha
Super quick and easy fish and chips shop with an awesome view! We sat outside on a very sunny day. I got the “fish frenzy” and a cold corona! Perfect combo.!The prices could be a bit cheaper for other things on the menu but the “fish frenzy” was a good deal. The fish was cooked well and yum!
Mark Austin
$12 for this salad is an absolute joke. $26 for a few small pieces of fish and this salad. Having a laugh. Try to be healthy and get a salad and left hungry
Sunday's Best
Perfect location, and if seated outside you can watch the world go by as you enjoy a selection of delicious seafood. Had the fish frenzy and battered fish. Squid in the frenzy was nice and crunchy, although there could be more. Scallops were good as well. Preferred the battered fish more than the crumbed ones in the frenzy as they were a bit dry.
Cate
The best option if you want quick and easy fish and chips near the water - much better than some of the tourist traps nearby. The chips are great, service is friendly and the food arrives quickly even when busy. Would love them to add a vegetarian option so it's more suited to groups with mixed dietary requirements.
Andrew Mihos
Super laid back and easy going Restaurant. Great for small groups and kids. The fish and chips were perfect and the calamari was on point. Nice and fresh and cooked well. Head and shoulders above the rest was the octopus, juicy and tender with a nice salad. The staff were super friendly and regularly checked in with us. They also have great high chairs for those with young kids.

We visited Fish Frenzy on our last day in Hobart - on the advice of a local tour guide who mentioned it was one of Australia's best...how could we not then?!  This is definitely not just a local fish and chip shop - located in a prime position on Elizabeth Street Pier on the waterfront, this is next level fish and chips.  That said, be prepared to pay the price that comes with that!  The fish is fresh and prepared excellently.  We ordered beer battered and tempura fish and chip (flathead) - beautifully soft fish encased in flavoursome batter/tempura.  The menu is a lot more varied than just fish and chips, and the drinks selection isn't too shabby either.  However, it was a tad unexpected to have to pay a surcharge/donation for sauce, whereas at most other establishments it would surely have been included.  All in all, top quality seafood but be prepared to pay the price that comes with top quality location too!
The Grey Hat
Great place and service<br/>Ordered fish and chips as well as seafood chowder.<br/>Food came under 10 mins from order<br/>Taste. Fish were very fresh!<br/>I recommend to try beer battered fish.<br/>Not a fan of seafood chowder as I felt it can use a little bit more salt but it’s up to everyone’s preference.<br/>To have the best experience, best to get tartare sauce. Should have been included into the fish and chip package, instead of customer pay extra.

I'm going out on a limb here and claiming this is better than Mures (nearby) for seafood. I had Oysters and Chips - like just about everywhere in Australia, the chips are bought in frozen and cooked on the premises but these were 'beefeater' style and the nicer of the frozen chips. Wouldn't it be cool to serve real chips as a point of difference from the other seafood places? Doesn't Tassie grow potatoes?
Ray OR
Is Not That Good as high as standard we though, no display for seafood food a bit of limited of oyster and salmon, the tasi famous of those two nothing surprise for me
Clem
Have you ever been so disappointed by a meal that you're actually offended? <br/><br/>When you go to a fish and chip place that is literally situated on the wharf, at worst you should be able to expect fresh seafood. But alas, that was not the case on our visit to Fish Frenzy... <br/><br/>We were robbed $17(!) for two fillets of frozen flake that tasted like it was definitely from a box, $9.50 for 6 rubber calamari rings and an additional $8 for some tasteless, bad RSL style chips. <br/><br/>But the prices are not the issue. Had it been fresh and of reasonable quality we would have been more than happy to pay a premium for the great location.<br/><br/>We've had better fish and chips in shopping centre food courts.<br/><br/>The worst meal of our trip to tassie.<br/><br/>Avoid at all costs.
ZZQ
The food is generally ok as long as you are willing to pay a hefty premium for the prime location. The grilled trevalla fish was fresh and generous in portion but it completely lacked any seasoning. The crumbed or beer battered fish fillets had an especially high "location tax" and likely to have been frozen. The standout item was the chips. They had a radiant golden color with the taste and texture to backup the appearance. They had the perfect amount of crisp on the outside and were very fluffy on the inside.Well worth exploring the many options in the area. It's likely you'll find a more economical option that's just as good if not better without having to dig deep into your pocket.
Jade Holloway
Not bad for a casual fish & chip takeaway restaurant. Service was quick, friendly staff, food though was a tad overpriced for what it was. Basic - don't expect too much for the price.
World In A Bite
Food 2: best chips ever! The only downside is that there's no other fish & chip combination that includes crumbed prawns 🍤 🙁<br/><br/>Decor 1: average fish & chip cafe <br/><br/>Service 1: fast, friendly & generous service!
The Way To Good Food.
Blue eye fish and chips, had to go beer battered and it was b-e a-utiful. Fish was hot, batter was lightly crispy and still had a mild scent of beer.<br/><br/>Calamari rings were with actual calamari, something I am passionate about. Sick of the flabby textureless calamari rings made of stingray. Beautiful when fresh from the fryer and were devoured immediately. Last one was a little rubbery but to be expected when they overcook so easily. Anyone who doesn't know better would think it badly cooked but that just identifies the people who don't appreciate real calamari done right.<br/><br/>Chips were average but still hot from the fryer. Nothing to rave home about.<br/><br/>Loved the sign saying "dona feeda da boids"<br/><br/>-----<br/><br/>Been back again in September and what can I say but it's as good as ever! I'll come back again and again it's my must stop shop for Hobart. 2018

The people working here are very friendly, beautiful view, sweet air and nice food!!!!!! Very good environment. I like the smokey fish chowder.<br/>Good try!

Recently went to fish frenzy to get a little taste of the sea before checking out the local night life. What can I say other than I now have full blown FISH FRENZY. Great fish, calamari and chips, I really recommend you order the FISH FRENZY. Very quick service and ok prices considering the location of the place. Only downside is I can no longer go to any other restaurant because of the aforementioned FISH FRENZY.
Hungry Habit
For a place selling fish and chips by the water, you would want fresh fish and not soggy, drab chips. It's really not worth the money or effort or calories. The seafood tastes like it's come out of a cardboard box, the fish wasn't even battered, just crumbed....Go to your local fish and chip shop and I can guarantee that it will be 100 times better than here.
Lisa
This was a little disappointing. I had the fish frenzy which was a decent size. The calamari was chewy and the chips were nothing to rave about. The fish was overcooked. I would recommend getting 2 dipping sauces because the size of one is tiny.
Astrogirl
Dropped in here for dinner on a Saturday night whilst visiting from Melbourne with my husband and baby daughter. We were looking for somewhere casual to eat where we wouldn't be frowned upon for bringing a little one. I thought the food would be pretty ordinary (family dining in a touristy location) but I was pleasantly surprised. Yummy and fresh, and heaps of it! Definitely recommend.
Love Food
Very kind staff and very comfortable environment. Ordered fish frenzy and grilled fish w Greek salad. <br/>Love the calamari that comes in fish frenzy.<br/>Chips was ok. <br/>They are very very quick in serving the dishes. <br/>Grilled fish is also yumm.
David Liao
Stayed at Somerset apartments so decided top stay close for dinner. Checked review seem okay but the flake with beer battered tempura was terrible. Fish was blend. The only thing well done was the chips

One of my favourite fish and chip restaurants in Hobart. The seafood is always fresh and the portions are huge so do share ahahaha. They also have salads to balance out the fried food.

If you want fresh Fish & Chips in Hobart, Fish Frezy is the way to go. At the start of the Elizabeth Street Pier, it is located close to Salamanca Square. After coming back from the Three Capes Track (4-day hike), I was absolutely starving. I ordered the calamari, crumbed prawns and chips. Like most fish & chip shops, the food was delivered in less than 10 minutes. The quality of the seafood was fresh and delicious.
Banhy
Good fish and chips! Bit pricey but the serving sizes are massive. Everything nicely cooked. Had the platter for 2 (massive), the grilled octopus and fish Burger. All delish.
Richard-Persephone MacKay
Among a few fish and chips shops/restaurants that we visited during our holiday in Hobart, this one was impressive. Fresh seafood, good selection and decent amount. I am not talking about the amount of the chips they served, but the seafood. We will return to this place when we revisit Hobart in the future.
Tomato Bandit
Recommended this place by a local friend. Was really surprised by quality of the food. Came for late lunch and ordered grilled blue eye and chips, scallops with greek salads and mixed platter. Really yum. Friendly staffs too. Came back here on a Saturday night and it was packed! We didnt ended up dining there then due to the long queue and no more indoor seating area left.
Teresa
I had the frenzy wrap it was fresh, nice sauce but the fish wasn't that great. Calamari was stringy. Chips were good and staff were friendly.
Star
Overrated & overpriced. Only GF options were both $35 for grilled fish & chips. Far Out man!!! We were recommended this place but it totally was not worth it. Avoid this tourist trap.
Zeynep
We had grilled barra and fish of the day served with Salad. It was good and filling but too expensive for what they deliver. Lovely staff, ok atmosphere, very central.
ChippityChirp
Visited here for a late lunch after arriving in Hobart. We really enjoyed their Fish & Chips ($19.50) and Fish Frenzy ($21) - each had 2-3 different types of fish and were accompanied by a large serving of fries hidden inside the cone.
Robert
Love this place. Great seafood, reasonable price. Very friendly and helpful staff. Went there with my wife and our 1 year old son, enjoyed my scallops and will definitely visit again next time we're in Hobart.
Ben
Hmm, I am not sure, but the food was ok and the view was nice... Maybe not as good as it used to be as this place was recommended by a local to us. The food lacked a bit of inspiration and was a bit boring...
More Than Nourishment
We both had the fish frenzy ($21 per dish) which came with two pieces of crumbed fish, calamari, scallops and chips. The scallops were my favourite, super plump and fresh. It was good but nothing super spectacular. The service was super friendly.
Oscarmoo
Once upon a time Fish Frenzy was THE place for seafood in Hobart. Their seafood platter was a showcase of Tassie seafood at very reasonable price as was the fish frenzy. Fast forward a decade plus more, it is just above punter fish & chips.<br/><br/>This time round I took the family for a quick fish & chips (we had fish frenzy x2 & calamari). The best part was the crumbed scallops as part of fish frenzy. It was cooked perfectly. Calamari was a little chewy, chips were just ok & fish was not nice (very fishy). <br/><br/>My kids didn't mind, so for me it was a good night as the food arrived very quickly. And for that I gave an extra 1/2 point.
Anafantasia
Scallops and calamari weren't fresh. Fish pieces were tiny. Prawns weren't properly cleaned. Location is great but for Hobart I expected a lot better seafood.
Tee
Friendly staff but the tall guy with glasses behind the far end counter is very rude, spoiled the whole experience there. Soggy chips. Wonder who claimed the best fish n chips in Aus, definitely not this place.
MandE
A nice-looking cafe on the Pier. Unfortunately, the consistency and quality of the food doesn't match the location.<br/><br/>Battered Blue-Eye Trevalla - batter was light and crispy, fish was good. Missing salt, but I suppose there are customers that can't eat salt or prefer unsalted fish.<br/><br/>Fish Frenzy - the namesake dish, was a total disaster. Scallops and calamari were overcooked, rubbery and had a strange taste to them (not fresh). Even the two pieces of crumbed fish were awful. This was the epitome of the worst fish and chips ever.<br/><br/>I suppose that it makes sense that the pricier dishes are of better quality, but it doesn't make sense for a restaurant to shoot itself in the foot by serving up disgusting food just because an offered dish is slightly cheaper. So, be careful of what you order, though I'm sure there are many other places serving far better quality and consistent fish and chips around Hobart.
KTY
This place claims to have arguably the best fish and chips in Australia and I must admit its pretty good. Service was super fast and the food was a good portion size. I had the fish n chips and seafood chowder, both very good. Bonus: The oysters here are excellent, very fresh, must try in Hobart!
Goh Shu Herng
Just had dinner here with my family. In terms of how the place is, it's actually decent with average deco, average plating, slightly pricy food but in terms of taste it's rather decent. Had the mixed fish with 3 different fish they have available which tastes good. Was happy with the fish and chips. The seafood chowder was rather unique which is slightly on the sweet side. I reckon it goes well with the chips. I won't go out of my way for this but if I am around in the area I would try it again.
Hungry Panda
Great location overlooking the harbour and fast efficient service.<br/>Sadly the food was quite poor as Hobart is known for it's seafood and set on the waterfront, would have expected better quality.<br/><br/>The oysters were quite fresh and we really enjoyed them!<br/><br/>The Fish Frenzy seemed like great value, but the fish was well overcooked and lacked flavour. The calamari was tough and chewy. The scallops were also overcooked and not fresh. It's a bad dish when the chips are the best part of the dish (but let's be clear, they weren't great either).
TINA JOHNSON
The grilled salmon was quite nice. However, the food is far too overpriced. $29 for some grilled salmon? I could go to the local market and buy a kilo for this price. Location is good with a nice view towards the pier.
MF
Well located on the pier. A casual dining cafe with a good selection. Fantastic fish and chips with a clever way to takeaway. We enjoyed our meal here.
Emily
Had both the fish frenzy and the battered fish. Fish frenzy is a good 1 order with a few things in it (fries, fried calamari) service is good however price wise---its a little on the high side; especially since the quality of the fish and chips is average at best.<br/>The calamari was too thick thus chewy. Oysters weren't the freshest and the battered fish was a little of a let down. Good range of local wine though.
Jess
Tasty fish and chips - just what a chilly Hobart night called for. I think that our expectations were maybe a little high. Don't get me wrong, lovely fresh fish and seafood, but chips seemed to be cooked in old oil and the service wasn't as good as we'd experienced elsewhere. If you're after fish and chips this is a great spot, just don't expect anything fancy.
TTR
Absolutely the best fish and chips we've had in tassie. A very cold night after a stressful day trying drive to Hobart avoiding closed highways! The scallops were the freshest, best cooked, most tasty as was the salmon, which was thinly sliced but so tasty. Then the salads: no brown or curled over bits and just enough, not drenched in dtessing. And the chips tasted sooo good, like they were perfectly cooked in clean oil. Yum yum
Ballerina
Very simply FANTASTIC! well worth a visit or more with friends and family v good value and wonderful food. Not sure that there is more to be said - please try it!
David
This restaurant is very busy and it can be hard to secure a table inside as well as being very noisy for a conversation (though we did visit on a Friday night so it might be less busy and with a better atmosphere on other days). There is no clear signage to indicate there is no table service and this can be confusing as as it really does seem like a place that offers table service. My friend and I were unsure when we entered if we could just grab a table and ended up waiting for a few minutes for some one to seat us before we realised we could just grab a table ourselves. <br/>The food is a bit pricey for a place with no table service, especially considering that two fish fillets will begin from $15.00. However, they let you choose from quite a wide range of fish to have! We ordered the half dozen Oysters and the Fish Frenzy (two fish fillets, three scallops, three calamari rings & chips) to share. The sauces all have to be purchase separately too. The staff are very friendly and the service quite efficient with the food coming out very quickly. The Osyrwrs are served with lemon, a balsamic reduction and some very hot wasabi. It was quite an interesting combination that worked quite well! The fish, scallops and calamari were battered very well and seemed quite fresh. The dishes were also presented very well. However, the fish fillets are tiny and the amount of food you receive is quite disappointingly small, considering the prices. I've definitely had better fish and chips with more generous servings for lower prices and I don't feel like this is value for money. I feel like this place offers more of a standard food court dining experience.

The pan-seared scallops were well-done! We ordered the blue-fin fish which was very fresh. The only downside was the crumbed calamari rings which were too chewy for our liking.

We went here last weekend during our stay in Hobart from Melbourne. This place had been recommended to us from a number of people from Hobart that are now based in Melbourne. We were really disappointed in the quality and price of the fish and chips. We paid $15 for two small pieces of flake, the beer batter was nice, however nothing special and definitely not worth the money. The chips were tasteless, the calamari rings had nice flavour however were chewy as some other reviewers have suggested. I wish we had of trusted the negative reviews on this site before we went. The service was good, but we have much much nicer and cheaper fish and chips in Melbourne and we left totally unsatisfied and disappointed.
AReed89
Cute large servings of fish and chips in paper cones. Calamari was a bit over cooked and chewy. Fish was delicious. Chips were nothing amazing.
Eddie_botha
Expensive fast food. We had the fish frenzy special, and it was really pretty average, except for the calamari that was so tuff, you could hardly cut it with a knife. The atmosphere is that of a fast food outlet whist some staff sitting at the table next to us was folding the brown paper they serve the food in loudly and merrily as we were eating. As we were just about finished eating, a waitress came and stood at our table, asking us if we were finished. I said almost, and she was just standing there waiting for us to finish. That was really not very nice and we obviously left after uncomfortably gulping down the last bits. Would really not recommend this place to anyone, not even for fast food.
Angieconnemara
Greasy. Had a bit of time to kill before our flight, we're peckish, heard great things about this place so figured we'd give it a try. We shared the Fish Frenzy, 2 pieces of fish, scallops, calamari & chips. Fish & chips were very greasy, calamari was obviously frozen (very tough & stringy) however the scallops were tasty. It was incredibly disappointing given fresh seafood is a few footsteps away on the pier.
Case
Best fish and chips I've ever eaten, was soooo so delicious. The fish is amazingly fresh and great service. Recommend!!
Nlh79
Only good thing was the size of the meal but that didn't help if it didn't taste good. The chips were plain and boring, the fish didn't taste fresh and was very overpriced for what you get. It's a shame as the location in great.
Rachel
Disappointed. Heard heaps about this place, so de died while in hobart we would try it, I had the battered flake, two pieces in a paper cone, I forgot to add chips, wasn't offered either, my friend ordered crumbed shark and chips also we shared a cesar salad, my fish was not nice at all grey looking colour not fresh at all, also some of it was fatty, friends was ok, no flavour, great location, but no service either, would have liked another wine but had already paid when ordered.

Tasmanians who LOVE eating here.. Each time we go to Hobart we make a point of eating here. The fish is always fresh, if they can't get it fresh they take it off the menu. We usually order the fish and salad dishes as we don't go for masses of chips. So popular, it is always crowded at peak times so get there early. Have your partner find a table while you go to order. The service is quick and efficient. Help yourself to a bottle of free water at the bar. The place bubbles with local families in a friendly atmosphere.....if you want to strike up a conversation with people around you, they will happily join in. One time my husband didn't get his order. The management were so apologetic, he was quickly served the delicious laksa he ordered, they refunded the cost of his meal and even gave him money for the parking metre. Now that is looking after the customer! I don't understand why there are some poor reviews as we have never been disappointed in 9 years. Beautiful spot on the harbour.
KLM
Absolutely great service and seafood absolutely fresh. The cooks know how to cook a 5 star seafood.
Clairest
Not sure why the reviews are so bad- fish was delicious and chips were good. Bit on the pricey side for fish n chips but the servings are generous
Sheri Baby
Not cheap but great food. Great fish & chippy. real fast service, friendly staff. not super cheap but worth it! Lovely view of the harbour.
Jigle1
Fish was overlooked and dry. Chips and salad average. Not cheap. Disappointing as location is fabulous and relaxing.
Tallpoppy
Worst fish as chips have had in a long time. We got the $90 platter the fish and octopus was tough and the chips were soggy and did not taste good. The serve was much smaller than expected. There was something wrong with the oil or the chips were not cooked from frozen. When we complained the response we received was that is how it is. Not good enough. Would have expected at the very least for them to offer to cook another serve of chips. In addition the hot and cold pod were served on the same platter which meant that those with allergies and those that were pregnant in our group could not eat half the food. Would definitely nt recommend this place and surprised that it was so highly praised in the tourist brochures.
Mistermister
Overpriced and flavourless. Dont come here if you are a Hunky Dory fan. Very disappointing. We ordered grilled fish and salad. It was $30 and BLAND! I had to put heaps of salt on it. I also ordered the fried prawns and chips. They were better tasting. They also charge for tomato sauce. 2 people: $50 which a bit much for casual fish and chips by the water.

Disappointing, should have checked the reviews. Chips smelt off and overcooked. Asked the staff to check it and they said it was fine and didn't even acknowledge it. Crumbed fish was like cardboard. Fresh grilled salmon wasn't fresh! Avoid if you can.

Do not eat here. As a regular visitor to Hobart I always make a point of eating lots of seafood. I have regarded Fish Frenzy as one of the best places for a casual fish meal.<br/>On our latest visit with our son and daughter in law we ordered 2 pier platters at $90 each. <br/>The salmon on the platters had been grilled to the consistency of cardboard.<br/>The fish offering was overcooked and dry.<br/>The Mussels were smothered in a doubtful curry sauce concoction.<br/>The crumbed scallops were the size of marbles.<br/>The oysters surprisingly for such a venue were less than fresh.<br/>The prawns had obviously been frozen and were of doubtful origin.<br/>Only the Octopus and Calamari were acceptable.

Fantastic. Incredible fish and chips - get the fish frenzy pack with amazing (but small) crumbed fish portions and best ever scallops and calamari. Chips were good (not to write home about) but combined with the setting outdoor on the pier, really tasty.

Chips are really good!. I am not a fan of fish, I usually just have chips if I go to Fish Frenzy. I really recommend having the chips they are yummy, and they give you a lot so your money well spent.

Fish is decent, chips are fine. Scallops tiny, calamari is ok. <br/><br/>For the price it's not even remotely worth it. Especially for take away.

UFO. I had a lucky break with soup du jour<br/>Tomato based Seafood broth with fennel. Was seriously v good for $18.<br/>After my initial shock horror at the prices for a glorified chippo & concern at what I would chose if unidenitified fried objects were de rigeur<br/>Not spoilt for choice if you're looking for the healthy option other than a $10 salad<br/>$30 for salmon? Kidding me?

This place is terrible no idea how it got good reviews I could have knocked my husband out with his rock hard fish and the seafood in the chowder was hard and chewy. Do not go.

Nothing special here. Just fried fish and fries. Doesn't taste any better than an average fish and chip shop.

Definitely a must for affordable seafood in hobart. Delicious but make sure to ask for plenty of condiments.

Crumbed scallops were good but oil was brown and fish dry and overcooked for the fish frenzy pack, and little pricey for what you get, standards were better 4 years ago

Great fish and chips, very fresh and cooked very well. Loved the vibe and enjoyed my meal, not cheap but worth it
Marina
I had a beautiful piece of fresh blue eyed trevalla on Greek salad, it was the best piece of fish I've had in awhile. It was a little pricey, but worth it. Service is minimal but to the point, it was a busy night.

The meal was terribly over cooked (fish). Really they shouldn't have served it. It was too dry to eat. All rather nasty and disappointing. 1.1 out of 7.9

Seafood delight!. Went to Fish Frenzy in search of some fine Tassie Seafood. Great food in a casual setting with the best harbor views in town. The pier platter for 2 will not disappoint!

Great seafood. Special prawn, fish laksa great. Compared to Sydney prices good value for money. Love being served in cone of brown paper.

OVERPRICED, OVER RATED! $17 for 2 small to Medium sized pieces of blue eye = a joke! The fish was nice but not even close to being worth that, chips were ok, bit oily, oysters had too much sauce, calamari was chewy, $10 for a small bowl of salad. For these prices go to a restaurant, or is you want easy and quick go somewhere else. This place obviously survives on the tourist dollar only.

Best chips!. Fish Frenzy is a 3min walk from my weekend accommodation and they have the BEST chips. I love that they serve them in a paper cone. Try the tempura flat head too - it's pricey but has always been very delicious. Remember it is a fish'n'chip place, not a restaurant. It is on the higher side for fish'n'chips though - but they're better than other places in the area!

Too Much Hype. This restaurant was recommended to me over and over, best fish is Tassy they all said. I want to know what they were smoking before they ordered! <br/><br/>The service is fast! you have somewhere to be, then nick in here grab a so-so fish & chips that will kill your desperate hunger pangs and get to where u need to be. <br/><br/>You want mouth-watering fish, succulent calamari and to die for scallops, keep walking. <br/><br/>Sorry Fish Frenzy I really wanted to like this place and it just didn't live up to the hype.
John
A little on the exy side for what you get. But service is fast and food is good. Get a table outside, one of the best seats in town
SueN
Priced ok and tasty. Friendly helpful staff. Not too busy so fast service. Lovely & fresh seafood. Liked the presentation in paper cones but they also provided plates without being asked. I'd go back.
Sparky
Overrated!. Definitely overrated for what they offer - mean quantity in fancy wrapper & over priced. Flippers the floating shop on the pier is heaps better.
Dhilt
Over priced and too popular for its own good. You have to queue to order at one counter then queue for drinks at another. I ended up getting takeaways which was okay.

We were definitely full by this time so we decided to walk it off. Again, there was really nothing to see in the CBD, so we headed back for a quick snooze back at the hotel. When it was nearly dinner time, we decided to try the seafood and headed to Fish Frenzy. The place was, well, very normal and felt like your average fish and chips shop. The only problem was, the fish and chips here were crumbed and not battered. We ordered the fish frenzy - it had 2 pieces of crumbed fish and chips, 3 scallops and 3 calamari rings. It was ok. Nothing special. W even found the fish too dry, so I skipped this after a few bites. The fish chowder, however was the bomb! I really really liked it. There was fish and seafood laden goodness in every bite with scallops, mussels, white fish and trout interspersed throughout the milky concoction. Will come back just for this.
Too Many Pies
It unfair to criticise a fish and chip shop for the quality of their produce and in the Hobart area most have some of the freshest available. So it comes down to those little differences: quick and friendly service of a great range of products - that is what I saw served at Fish Frenzy and will be back soon to try some of their other options!<br/>
Bri
I made a bad menu choice. The salad was drowning in dressing and the prawns were what you'd expect from a corner fish and chippery. Seafood chowder - this was J's much better menu choice. Thick and hearty and perfect for a cold day.
Minda Barley
The seafood chowder was thick and rich with different shellfish and white fish. Deeply satisfying it came with some garlicky bread which was a delicious accompaniment. There were some strong herby flavours coming through the soup too; mainly dill giving it a some fresher tones and lifting the heavy creaminess.
