Review Annapurna Salamanca - Hobart

Akash Saha
The food arrived on time, customer service was really good, food was average I would say but the food quality was great. The environment was also pretty nice. We ordered for special thali and seafood thali with some starters, everything arrived on time without any delays. On the desert we ordered for mango kulfi, kulfi was really delicious. If you are in the city area and looking for a restaurant dinner with some drinks, this would be your place.

Suriya Banquet is one of the best option in the menu. Where you get different types of starters, curries, naan, rice and ending with beautiful dessert made by them. It could be a good place if you want to give a party to your friends and families with Indian food.

Had reservations for 4 persons at 5.15pm on Sunday. We were the only dined in customers when we arrived. During our ordering, the waitress was impatient and not friendly. Anyway we ordered two sets each of the Special Thali and seafood thali, a side pumpkin dish and a couple of chai tea. The food were served not too long after. Other than the butter chicken in the special thali was too sweet to our liking, we like and enjoy all the others esp the fish curry in the seafood thali. The chai tea was a delight to drink after the meal. We were enjoying our meal a lot and when the other male waiter came over to ask us how we are getting on, we told him to give our compliments to the chef. Why the 3 star rating then? We were still chatting and drinking our tea when the waitress came over and gave us our bill to settle. We had not asked for our bill and her action brought an uncomfortable feeling that she wants us to leave. Feeling abit annoy over this, we paid and left.

Quick service , food was great and fresh . Everything came out promptly and hot . I loved the garlic cheese naan and butter chicken .

Surprised by the negative reviews. I’ve eaten a lot of Indian food over the years, and this was well above average. Goat curry was decent, chicken tikka excellent, saag paneer had plenty of flavour. Enthusiastic service too. Thanks.

Had a range of dishes amongst five people and all were delicious. Strong aromatic dishes, balanced textures, and perfect naan bread. An ambitious number of seats in the table in addition to takeaway makes me wonder if the place is taking too much on .

The waiter with the manbun made my night! He was so genuine and you could tell he really cared about his job, even stopping to say goodnight to tables on his way out. He deserves a raise!!! The food was delicious as always too

Delicious curries and great customer service.

Just picked up a takeaway from the Annapurna in Bellerive and it was awful. I will go as far to say it is the worst curry I have ever had. The Tandoor Lamb cutlets weren't cooked properly, really fatty and uneatable. The naan was soggy, the onions in the curry were near raw and the curry had barely any flavour and zero spice. What a waste of $40. Very disappointing so would not recommend.

Superb food.. much much better than many Indian restaurants in Melbourne. If you are in Hobart must visit.. We all enjoyed the food, I personally enjoyed it most and on top of it best ambience and customer service.

My son and I had dinner ar your Salamanca restaurant last night. Your staff were attentive and got our order within minutes of arriving. It was very busy being a Friday night and entree arrived more than 30 minutes after we ordered. There was a long wait between meals (we're almost hungry again by the time the mains arrived). The food was delicious, the vegetarian dish included in the banquet was the best. We have an entertaiment voucher where one gets 25% off the total bill. My son was gifted a voucher for $55.00 and we wanted to use all that and not pay too much more. HOWEVER, when my son was paying for the meal, which we thought was just over $55.00 after applying the 25% discount, and he proceeded in giving the gift voucher, the server and later the manager changed the way they calculated the bill. What they've done was deduct the gift voucher from the total bill and only applied the 25% off from the remaining balance which I thought was wrong. So instead of just paying just an extra dollar we paid an extra $15.00. I think it's wrong the way they applied the gift voucher. Although we enjoyed the food, the experience in the way we paid for the meal left a bitter taste in our mouths. Gift voucher is LIKE money so treat it as such. We won't be going back for a while.

Best butter chicken. The garlic cheesy naan bread is to die for. So good. The service is quick and great customer service too.

Great food. The wine list was a bit limited, however it matched the café style. The staff were all helpful and friendly. I rnjoyed my meal.

I’ve eaten at Annapurna many times (and in each suburb) the food and service is always outstanding! Highly recommend

We visited Hobart with the group of 39 over Easter holidays. We Prebooked Annapurna for our 4 days' dinner, while booking Mr. Sonu advise us that they will organise banquet hall for our group which will include kids activity area with no extra cost, As we are travellers and had no idea about this particular restaurant but We were surprised by their personalised customer service and awesome food each and everyday.I would like to thank entire team and specially Ankit Modi who looked after us and gone beyond our expectations and made our stay in hobart memorable. Thanks once again.

It's the worst ever Indian food that I had in my life. I ordered Biriyani & chicken tikka masala. The food was not spicy & Biriyani was really worst. There was no salt, & it was bit sweet. These people are cheating these white people. This food is not at all a Indian food. Moreover Indian food will be so tasty & yummy. Plz stop visiting this restaurant my dear friends. Its a horrible place to have Indian food. I've never seen spinach in Biriyani. Hey Annapurna you probably have to change the way you cook if not better close your business. My actual rating is 0 out of 10.

Amazing food! The service was okay despite less staff. The food is super tasty though. Worth a visit!

Always awesome food and great service! Both the Salamanca and North Hobart restaurants are impeccable :-)

Ordered pick up from your bellerive store. Normally i have had a reasonable experience at your other stores but it was terrible at bellerive. Ordered over the phone and was told 25 minutes. Arrived 25 minutes later to wait another 20-25 minutes inside the store. The weather outside was chilly and they had the a/c on making the shop uncomfortably cold. Food was very average and to be honest, not worth it. Will not be returning to your bellerive store. Will be going to Dawat next time.

The food was so good we ate here two nights in a row. Tasty (if a bit mild) curries, very attentive service, and very convenient to the waterfront/Battery Point and Salamanca Place
Toby Jarvis
Lovely attentive waitresses to take your orders with a polite and gentle manner, curry's and condiments to brought to the table with care and sincerity. During service polite and discreet check on how are evening was going. Evening dining that met all expectations. Thank you.

Great food - love eating here, always great fast service if you want a good quality Indian authentic food.
Randall Preuss
Very slow service, meals were served two or three at a time 10 minutes part for a table of 12. Some people on our table had finished their meals before I had even been served. By the time I was finally served the table rice was stone cold. Summing up, the meal was good but the service was complete crap.
Agnes Frith
The quality of food is declining. 3 of the meals we ordered tasted alike. I felt the same sauce was used in all the dishes.

Sooo good!! Just Beautiful. Definitely one of my favorite places to eat out <3

Brilliant food, great service. Everything was delicious but the butter chicken was awesome

Good food and very tasty. We enjoyed the variety and good service.

Fantastic addition to the Bellerive strip. Bursting with flavour, friendly service and realistic wait times. It may not be the most authentic Indian, but is among the more authentic cuisines on offer in the area.

Best Indian food in tassie superb and fresh food every time

This restaurant has lured us all the way to Tassie (from Sydney) for their phenomenal Goat Biriyani.

In 2018 we first stumbled to this restaurant as we were staying in an adjacent hotel. It was buzzing with crowds on a Friday night and we were lucky enough to get a table. We ordered Goat Biriyani and Goan Fish curry. The waiter asked whether we would like to have the food normal or spicy which we gladly opted to spicy assuming it would still be quite mild all the way in Hobart.

The food was divine, literally out of this world. Flavours were tantalising tastebuds to the next degree. The group unanimously agreed that this was the best biriyani everyone had had in Australia.

Fast forward two years and I noticed a bargain flight to Hobart and grabbed it with the primary objective of treating ourselves to the ultimate Goat Biriyani.

We were in Hobart 3 days and we had a meal at Annapurna each day. Again I will bring my focus to the Goat biriyani. Two years later the crowned biriyani did not fail to deliver, same standard if not better. At times when you revisit an old favourite restaurant it fails to live up to the original experience. However, thankfully Annapurna delivered and exceeded our expectations. We ordered Goat Biriyani (Spicy), Chicken Tikka Masala (Spicy), Prawn curry (Spicy), Saag Paneer (Spicy) and cheese naans. If you are blessed enough to be visiting this place do order Goat Biriyani – Spicy. The Saag paneer is another favourite of mine. I have only had it this good in this restaurant. Cheese naan was also a favourite. There was a volcano of cheese oozing from the naans. My first time experiencing such a rich naan. I will remember to order it next time we fly to Annapurna.

I cannot recommend this gem of a restaurant enough. Truly hope someday they will open a branch in Sydney. Until then we’ll fly to Hobart for Indian. Thank you Annapurna for maintaining the standard.
Alex
Had tried their chicken Tikka and sea food thali. I should have asked if the chicken was halal before placing order. However i only realised after the food arrived, although i had hardly touched the food. Tye staff quickly swapped it with Lamb which was halal and charged me only for lamb and not chicken despite insisting that I'll pay for both as it was my fault. Their sea food thali is the best i ever had.

This was not our first option we wanted to try Cinnamon but since they were fully booked we walked to Annapurna. It's always nice when they offer poppadoms on the house, reminds me of the restaurants in India.

We went for the paneer tikka masala as a main and garlic rotis. All their main curry's come with a portion of rice. The person serving us was really nice when we asked will this be enough and he was like yes, the rice proportion is good for 2.

The paneer was really nice, well spiced and not too hot. The garlic rotis too went really well with the paneer. It was really nice meal and really good service.

When you reach your hotel after 8pm and you are hungry there is nothing better to hog onto Indian food. This restaurant was right outside our hotel and since it was open till late we din had Anu other option apart from this (we avoid Indian food as we cook it at home). The food, ambience and service was good.
Service - 3/5
Food - 3/5
Ambience - 3/5
Value for Money - 3/5

We ordered from Annapurna through menu log on a cold wintery summer’s night when we could not convince ourselves to leave the hotel room! The beef korma was delicious, as was the veg navaratan and veg samosas. I don’t think we got the rice we ordered but they provided two different rices instead so we can’t complain, both were yum. There was enough leftover for lunch the following day. I can’t comment on the restaurant but the take away service was good and I thought the prices were very reasonable. Picture shows a sample of everything we ordered.

If you are looking for some Indian curry near Salmanac Pl then this is your stop. The food is good, and complemented with good service.
The ambience is simplistic and the space is big enough to host multiple groups together.
Dave
Absolutely loved our dinner here. Had Goat Curry and Lamb Korma, plus some cheese and spinach naan. The dishes were so tasty and the meat was very tender. And there was plenty of it. The staff were polite and attentive. Highly recommended.

If in Hobart we recommend you check out this little gem, which is one of the best Indian restaurants we have ever been to. I had the Mango Chicken and my partner had the Goan Prawn curry, along with a couple of naans which were delicious.
Ballerina
This lovely restaurant sits next to La Prochetta an Italian restaurant well worth missing! see my review, the food is excellent as is the service - very busy on weekends so make a booking before showing up!

Wonderful waitress & Lovely meal. We went their on a quite day of (Lunch).. The waitress greeted and served us very nicely and friendly. The food was lovely as well. We had the lunch specials. And the portion was quite large as well. I would completely recommend it to everyone else's.

Depends on the chef. Well this was a little strange. My wife and I ordered take out from here on the Saturday. It was amazing. Unlike the usual stodge that passes for Indian food in Australia, it was that magical taste just like we were used to when we lived in the UK. Something we've never really managed to replicate since we moved to Aus in 2011. We had the house chicken curry and the balti prawn and they were amazing. We were on cloud 9!

On the 3rd night of our Hobart trip which was a Monday we thought, well we won't get a curry like this in Melbourne, so lets go crazy and have a curry 2 nights out of 3. We ordered exactly the same dishes down to exactly the same garlic naan and rice, the order was identical to the Saturday night order. Sigh..., it was back to the usual weird tripe they pass for Curry in Aus. For starters despite saying "no dairy" the chef on this occasion poured a load of coconut milk in to the house curry, so it was that creamy texture I hate in curry. In the UK if you want a creamy curry, you order a Korma, but over here it seems there's this obsession of putting cream or coconut milk in curry. If I want that I'll go get a thai, it's not what I expect from the Indian food as I like it.

So its pretty hard to review this place. The chef on Saturday cooked the best Indian food we have ever had in Australia, on a par with curries we used to have in the UK. Whereas the chef on Monday cooked a load of rubbish.

Enjoy a late dinner here last night, all ingredients were fresh and by far the best Indian we had in a while! Could taste 'real' tomatoes and spices, no paste was used here:)
James
Fantastic food at at great price, great service, great atmosphere and as well as being licensed and recently well priced alcohol, it's also BYO. I come here every time I'm in Hobart on Business and never have been disappointed.

Great food. Tasty food and great service. We ordered the Thali vegetarian and seafood plates

Could be better. I have always been a fan of Indian food. Annapurna is pretty good but they should stop adding cream in all their curries. When a customer asks for hot make sure you give them hot. Other than that the food was pretty good.

The service could be better. The waitresses had no clue what they were doing. They mixed up my order and looked confused. Waited for a good 30 minutes before I got my food. I was consoled when a young waiter came to my table and apologised to us. He gave my 2 girls Complimentary Mango Lassi's.

I will recommend this restaurant to my friends on weekdays but not on weekends.

Vegetarian Bliss. Main course of Tandoori Mushrooms was so delicious that I continue to rave about it on my return to Adelaide. Great place.

Delish! Service was great .... Delish!
Service was great and the food was amazing!

Not bad at all.. Got take out chicken tandoori entree and a side of naan. It took 15 minutes to come out and another 10 minutes for me to get home. The naan was still nice and hot as it was wrapped in foil. The half tandoori chicken was a nice choice too.

Less than average. We've eaten at a lot of Indian restaurants and most create palatable fare.

The bombay prawn (coconut coated) entrees were listed on the menu as has having a coconut and mango dip. Surely this should be on the side for 'dipping' but no, it was slathered all over the prawns. Which might be ok, except it was like a mayonnaise which once saw a mango in the fridge. So scrape it off and try the prawn, nup. Overcooked with burnt coconut batter.

Fish Pakora, on the Chef's Specialities, was average at best. This inspired us to stop at entree and not order a main. The wait staff were surprised and it was difficult to explain over the din of the busy room. Perhaps they were dealing with too many clients resulting in problems in the kitchen as well.

Regardless, as a first impression, they failed dismally and I could not recommend this venue.

Warm and Welcoming!! Lovely place for anyone new to Hobart to have food.. Service is wonderful. Food are excellent taste .. Naan bread, seafood, thali, mango lassi to name a few..

Pleasantly surprised. We really enjoyed our meal at Annapurna - the service was a bit slow, but we did go on a whim on the Saturday night of the Australia Day long weekend, so it's probably to be expected. The staff were lovely and we sat in the front so were sheltered from the busy chaos that they were no doubt dealing with in the rest of the restaurant!

The naan was beautiful - really fresh, hot, and (shock horror) tasted like naan, not just generic flat bread, or a slab of cold, flaky blah that is unfortunately not uncommon. We ordered baigan bhata and mutter paneer, and both were lovely, if a bit mild for our taste. (We ordered medium but both curries were very mild). I often find eggplant curries to be too heavy on the oil, with oil spurting out of each piece - this was not the case here, though.

I'd definitely go again, next time in Hobart and wanting decent Indian!

Visited Tasmania and had my first experience with Annapurna at the Taste Festival and my husband and I decided we have to visit the restaurant. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal and their service was excellent. Keep up the good Work, We Will be back.
Sam
Went to annapurna recently for my birthday party. There were 10 of us and we were quickly shown to our table. The staff were attentive and seemed genuinely excited for my birthday. The food was really yummy and the servings was generous. Thank you Annapurna for a wonderful birthday.

Rogan Josh Thumbs Down. Went with my family of six. We waited a fair while to be seated which was fair enough as they were busy and i thought it would be worth the wait. We all ordered rogan josh lamb and left the restaurant with more than half left on the table. We had to pay in full of course. The lamb was so chewy that my kids could not eat it and the rogan josh was just floating in what appeared to be watery liquid with not much more than a couple of slices of tomato. Very dissapointed. They asked if we liked the food and i said no. I have never been more disappointing with Indian before. The prices a far too high as the Indian is really fast food quality and not authentic dishes made with high quality cuts.

Atrocious service. I loved Annapurna for many years but now the magic has been broken. The primary problem was the complete lack of communication between the gutless floor staff which flowed onto the rest of service; not to mention what seemed to be an absence of any leadership and basic training. I felt extremely embarrassed as I had heavily recommended you to the friends I was with not to mention countless clients; rest assured I will now heavily recommended that people go out of their way to avoid you. Thank you for ruining my night.

Kind Regards.

Extremely poor service and poor food taste. It's too pricey for the quality of food and service.
Super
If you want Indian then don't go here. Tourist trap!!!!!
Lisa Marriot
Wow just wow!. I can't believe I'm going to write this but I think the meal I had at Annapurna was the best Indian food I've had in 30 years of eating and cooking Indian food. Without question the naan was the best I've ever eaten - it was a naan to dream about. Annapurna is a rather basic looking place with no views and charming but slightly erratic service but if you are travelling to Hobart DO NOT MISS IT.
Bri
One of my favourite things to order...is the Thali plate. Annapurna's menu describes this as "An Indian style combination plate served on a big tray with an assortment of individual dishes with steamed rice and Indian bread."
