Review Criterion St Cafe - Hobart

Very efficient and fast service! Amazing tasting coffee and food. Good prices. Will certainly come again. Servers were very polite.

My favourite breakfast and lunch cafe in Hobart. The menu is not that long but every dish is a winner, classy but not pretentious. We had eggs benny with bacon and savoury French toast. Everything was excellent plus really good coffee. Great attentive service and the place runs like a well-oiled machine. What's not to love?
Sandra Huby
Great breakfast or brunch place. Have ate here 3 times this week and had a different meal each time. My standouts are the Corn fritters and the Pork Sword ( potato pancakes with pulled pork) yummo . Good hot coffee as well

Fabulous vibe, great food & wonderful staff. Not to mention awesome coffee as well! The personal recommendation that brought me here was understated - a fabulous pit-stop as you navigate the bustle of the Hobart CBD... Keep up the good work guys!

Went into the cafe for breakfast. Had a pot of lemon and ginger tea and bacon and eggs on toast. Bacon was superb and the eggs cooked well. I would have preferred it on a bun but the sourdough toast was nice. Would definately go back there for breakfast again. Staff were super friendly.

Lovely sitting in the sun watching the world pass by. Food was delicious. Tea was hot. Service was fast and staff were friendly and welcoming. Would definitely recommend - especially the waffles!

Great breakfast! Delicious. Highly recommended. In photo: french toast

Just went into this Cafe this morning and was not impressed. I was served by a very rude unkept middle aged woman with an equally aggressive personality as if she was a police officer or something. Haven't been treated like I was since grade school which took me by surprise to be honest in a Hobart Cafe. Definitely a no go if they have such a piece at the helm of their business. Perhaps the business owner with an inflated ego but I am not sure, either way definitely recommend a nicer atmosphere for your morning coffee experience.

Amazing food. Amazing staff! The banana milkshake is made from real bananas and not topping (rare these days) the staff were fun and friendly! The meals were big and wonderfully priced! The eggs Benny is to die for! I highly recommend this when you're next in Hobart!

Absolutely epic food & coffee fab service too, thanku so much, highly recommend ur cafe xox yummo

Loved it. Porridge is the best ever! Great vibe, service and food. Thanks for making our holiday morning so special.

A wonderful brunch yesterday. We walked in and were directed to our table with menus and had immediate service for coffees. Although busy it was then minutes after we then both ordered the special of pancetta wrapped asparagus with eggs hollandaise and spinach. A beautiful brunch with service to match.

Fantastic food and service! Really enjoyed my eggs benny with Haloumi and mushrooms. yum yum Excellent coffee
Monique Clark
good food and friendly service however, butter knives to cut through toasted sourdough..
Adrian Barrett
Terrible, left everything on the table and went to Banjos... waste of money with zero concern from the staff.
Kate Dull
Awesome food and funky tunes at this busy little cafe. Will definitely be back when we're next in Hobart!
Liza Holmes
I had the corn fritters with grilled haloumi avocado and tomato salsa and it was awesome. Coffee was smooth and service was attentive and efficient. Would recommend a visit

The best $10 eggs on toast I've ever heard two bogans argue over the price of when paying.
Angela Reimers
Really good coffee and great granola. Recommend it.

Outstanding food, good coffee, great service and a chill vibe

Great food & service. Attended for b/fast 4 my daughters birthday. Waiter was a charming young girl. I will return.

A very nice, trendy café. The coffee is good, the meals are quite yummy. Very cramped on Saturdays inside, so aim at the alfresco area if possible.
Patrice Huggins
best breakfast I've ever had was at Criterion Street Cafe! great atmosphere too. if I visit Tasmania again, I'll be sure to stop by for another bite.
Corinne Coombs
So consistent and lovely to have smaller sizes on offer too. Hard to beat cafe in a sunny spot.

Heard so much goodness about you guys so I dragged my mum there for lunch the other day after her jazzercise class haha much to the annoyance of her ageing bones (sorry mum). However.. She was very happy I did!! She loved her corn fritters with bacon and I loved my pork sword pancake with chilli jam and fried egg!!! Keep up the deliciousness folks :) I'll be back soon for your savoury french toast (not really into sweet food) - sounds Bloody Mary awesome!!

A must visit cafe around Hobart CBD, always busy, bookings recommended during busy periods, indoor ground floor, upstairs and alfresco seating, great location, nice vibe.

All in all, would go again to try a few other interesting dishes. Service time is good, staff are friendly, toilet available upstairs, coffee was good, clean.
Cons: The CSC Waffle pictured has great taste from the hollandaise and soft spiced pulled pork, but the waffle although fluffy, made the whole dish just one note = soft. Needs a crunch element to it, like nuts, crunchy kale, just something.

The staffs are super helpful and friendly! Had corn fitter which is delicious except I got a bit tangy with chilli unexpectedly. Usually I am not a chilli person. Coffee is a bit weak. Otherwise all good. Worthy trying.
Elise
Always full of locals and regulars which is testament to the excellent food and coffee. Location is great in one of Hobart's few atmospheric laneways. Only complaint is that the food took a long time to come out, but that's OK when it's a lazy Sunday morning and you've got a good coffee to sip.

Food at Criterion Street Cafe tastes good, but the presentation needs a bit improvement. Service is just about average. Overall we happy with our food and it is ok.

This place is amazing!!! Service was freaking lovely, servings were huge and the place is just gorgeous. The hot smoked salmon was delicious. Def worth a visit.

Criterion Street cafe has been around for a long time and nothing surprises you here. A good spot to stop and get some breakfast or lunch and coffee if you’re in the city of Hobart.

Nice atmosphere! So relaxing and cozy, staffs were super nice and thoughtful. The food was absolutely stunning and price was affordable. Will surely visit again!

3.5 ⭐️. Found this little gem randomly as I’m walking around Hobart centre. The ambience of the place is pretty chilled and the menu looked pretty good! The halloumi salad definitely grabbed my eye. Did you know there are over 2000 varieties of 🧀 and halloumi is one of my favourite. The salad 🥗 is full of sweetness from the caramelised onion and currants, hints of lemon with the rice. Crunch of the almonds and pumpkin seeds. Sometimes simple things with good flavour just works. Highlights: Very generous portions and the food came out very quickly. And when was the last time you saw this much halloumi on a plate! Lowlights: coffee isn’t as good as I expected or is that the Melbournian in me? The service is friendly but not as attentive as what I am used to.

I have my worst hot choc in here. The hot choc is actually tastes like no chocolate at all. It is like milk only in a cup. I regret that i came here for my holiday culiner tasting. We also waited for 10 mins just wanted to order some food, and we tried to order when the barista come give us those terrible coffee and hot choc. The barista aint to help, she asked the waitress to come to us for food ordering (the waitress is terribly busy). Looks like the team-work environment in here is very poor.

We had lamb burger + corn fitters& haloumi. All of these are just having normal taste and nothing special. The sourdough bread is COLD. I can made them by myself. They are just like home-cooking.
Went there on the last day of our trip to Hobart. A buzzing little cafe, love the vibe. Food was fantastic, and the music was a sigh of relief. Felt myself smiling the whole time. Couldnt fault the place.

It’s my first time here and I gotta say the food was great! They’ve got decent coffees too, considering that it’s harder to find decent coffees at cafes unless stopping by at a coffee specialty store. We’ve ordered the lamb sandwich and the pork sword at $13 and $16 each. It’s reasonably price and the portion is huge, especially for the sandwich! The pork sword was especially unique with the Asian flavours in it! Not something I’ve ever had in pulled pork dish!
Overall, worth the try!

Ordered the French toast, fruit mix and eggs on sourdough toast with avo as a side.

Eggs on sourdough -
Very bland and simple, it's essentially just two slice of toast with a selection of poached, scrambled or fried egg and comes at $10. The side we ordered "avo" is just half an avo with the seed taken out and charged $4 for that my gawd? I can buy a whole avo at woolies for $3.5 buddy.

French toast - this is ok
Fruit mix - this is ok but not amazing

Our cappuccino was not made until we left the cafe, we reminded the waiter once half way through our meal.

However the service is fantastic !

Loved the vibe and decor of this place - very fresh and colourful. Friendly and helpful staff, with some of the best porridge I’ve ever eaten!
Karin
Bad food, bad service. Unfortunately a bad experience here. The toast was burned and my friends ‘fruits and nuts’ didn’t have any nuts. When we told the waitress her response was ‘oh dear’ and walked off.
Vi
My experience was a hit and miss. The corn fritters had an interesting mix of asian spices mixed into it (reminded me of tom yum) but were also too salty. Unfortunately they ran out of avocado salsa too which could have balanced out the spices. I found the dish too dry overall, especially with the fried haloumi on top. My first coffee however was wonderful - creamy, rich and tasted strongly of chocolate and cinammon. Unfortunately these same notes weren't present in my takeaway coffee, which tasted flat and almost bitter. On the plus side, there's free wifi which was very helpful for us tourists to plan the rest of our trip.

Great cafe in Hobart's CBD with good service and two floors of seating. Definitely a popular spot but despite being busy the food was quick to arrive. I had the corn fritters with bacon and was very happy with my choice, delicious!!
AP
Very busy little cafe with friendly waiters and waitresses. I had the French toasts with 3 cheese, onion and bacon. I enjoyed the dish but it wasn't amazing. I did really like the corn fritters which had some spice to it, but not the avocado that it came with (it was mushy/liquidy in some bits)

Delicious poached eggs on grain toast with avo was done right. The service was great too! Brought out very quick.
Inexpensive tasty breakfast :)
Michaelstamos
Fantastic service and the food was incredible. Generous servings and good value delicious food.

Lunch consisted of the leak and potato soup, the Biggie Smalls and the lamb sandwich. Biggie Smalls is a slow roasted lamb with roasted carrots, beetroot etc. Amazing flavour combinations.

Highly recomend this restaurant fir lunch.
Tina
Hallumi salad is good, the rice is quite special. Pulled pork pancake is a bit spicy and salty, and it's filling, maybe it's better to be ordered for a guy, but still good. Will recommend to everyone. Price is reasonable. Around $18 per person
Lisa
Had the salted caramel waffles and coffee. I'm a huge fan of salted caramel so naturally loved this. Wity such a large portion, I couldn't finish this. Great coffee!! Definitely worth a visit

Awesome breakfast on our visit to Hobart. I had the waffles - amazing! Hubby had the pork- really generous serve and beautifully seasoned and cooked
Sarah
Was looking forward to trying the food there...but when we got there at 12pm all the chairs were already packed up .. Apparently they decided they would close early today on a Saturday...way to do business

Went to Criterion cafe for a Saturday brunch, it really wowed me! The staff are friendly, services great, and fast consider how busy they are. I ordered long black and Halloumi salad. At first, I have to say the coffee is not what I expected, it is more like double expresso and quite acid, not my cuppa. The Food is quick and generous size, brown rice salad with toasted nut are devine! It is such a fresh flavor with lemon zest and honey, the amazing combination. If I have to fault, the Halloumi is quite salty, anything else is perfection. will definitely come back.

Went here before leaving Tassie amid some great reviews. It's a cool spot in town and just off the busy Liverpool St.

Didn't have the greatest experience you could have in terms of food - although I only ordered the granola (you'll rarely get a 5 star granola) and my partner ordered the waffles.

They were a little hard and the caramel was slightly salty, so whilst it didn't wow us, there was plenty on the menu to warrant another visit next time. Coffee was good!

Just before flying back home, we decided to stop by for breakfast, and man! It was great. The place was brilliant, a very comfy decor with mix and matched furniture. And the food was so yum! We had the CSC waffles, billy the kid and le coq- they were delicious without any doubt. Must try these dishes.
Mind you the quantity is lot.

Very crammed seating arrangement, food black, burnt (charcoal) and cold, very disappointed. Tiny portion for the money it costs, also had dirty cutlery which was shocking.

As regular Sunday customers, the Criterion Street Cafe has long been a favourite place to dine in Hobart. Never have we had such a disgraceful experience as we did today. The place was busy as it always is, and usually everything runs smoothly despite that. But today, one thing after another went wrong.

After a very long time waiting we were offered menus, then after a further 15 minutes our orders for food and drink were taken. Sadly, the cook could not see a difference between "Could I please have my eggs well cooked" and "Can you please burn the total crap out of my eggs because I love the taste of charcoal. Oh, and do the same to my toast while you're at it!" We had long finished our meals when we went inside to pay and our drinks were just being made. Not sure why all other diners who arrived well after us had already received their drinks. When asked asked about the drinks we got an "Oh, we're just busy". But you could serve everyone else theirs? Okay, yeah, makes a heap of sense. A drink would have at least made the blackened, rubbery things-that-were-meant-to-be-eggs slightly easier to get down.

But hey, congrats on the vegemite on toast that you got right. That must've taken a lot of concentration.

Such a cool, quirky little cafe. Definitely one of my favourites in Hobart. Awesome menu, great coffee, well priced food and great staff (who always know my order). All day breakfast too. You can't go wrong! You guys are fab and do an awesome job!

Service was fantastic, always checking that we were sorted. Coffee was nice. Waffles per spot on, bacon was crispy but the apple was slightly undercooked.
Foodie On The Road
Great brunch and good coffee. Criterion cafe had a good vibe and the staff were friendly. Pork slaw was very tasty. Very popular spot on Sunday.

Great coffee. AMAZING waffles, bacon and apple breakfast. I LOVE IT! You'll like it too I'm sure. Can't wait to return here again. Well done!

Great vibe, good music, friendly crowd. Definitely a trendy spot nestled away from the bustle. Food is beautifully presented. Coffee a tad weak (though i wonder if this is a marketing strategy?)

Good coffee, great food, friendly service. Love this place! It's very popular as well which is always a good sign. I've visited many times and would return again

Delicious. Stopped in for a quick breakfast before heading back to Melbourne. I had the french toast with caremilzed onion, tomato and dijon mustard. what a taste sensation! Divine. Hubby enjoyed his eggs on sourdough too. Coffee was pefect and HOT! Staff are friendly. Recommend this little cafe.

Good food. Lucky find on an Easter Monday where most cafes are shut. Good breakfast, efficient service and coffee was decent albeit in the weak side.

Best coffee in hobart!. Had an amazing breakfast and coffee and this little cafe definitely recommend!

One of my favourite Hobart haunts. The Pork Sword (not sure why they've given it such an obscene name!) is to die for, and the home-made juices wonderful. Friendly service. A real treat in the CBD!

Nice coffee, bit on the watery side, but still yummeh.

Firstly, in the past (say, 5 yrs ago) Hobart was always lacking cool coffee joints- if you were a visitor to Tassie and wanted somewhere to hang out that was not a chain, delivered some good food and had coffee that rated highly on your coffee snob yardstick. That said, things have improved somewhat with Hobart even having a few new spots since I last visited, and more impressively, even having a few local coffee roasters. So it was with high expectations and a 90% vote on Urbanspoon that took me to CSC this past Saturday. But those expectations were let down: the food wasn't great: $19 for crumbling flavourless corn fritters with a side order of stone cold bacon for example, and lukewarm coffee. And the hipster staff didn't help. One exception: the girl behind the coffee machine who brought me a second cup of hot coffee after I drank the first in one gulp...I was charged for it though, and the $44 breakfast pricetag was a bit of an insult too.

Cool little spot with friendly staff. And more importantly the food is superb

Swell staff and amazeball muffins. What a little slice of warmth on a super chilled morning! What lovely staff! An eccentric and intriguing girl was exceptionally friendly and playfully quirky, the young man behind the counter was a joyous, cheerful and funny lad and the muffins! Oh the muffins! Great coffee, wonderful service and super rad location. One happy customer they made me, thank you Criterion!

Coffee&almond croissant snack. Best coffee in Hob.

Mixed feelings!. Following the Urbanspoon ratings, I made my way here for breakfast today. Coffee was okay but the veg and corn fritters were just awful. Smelt very meaty - are they cooking them separately?? - cos the flavours were nowhere near veggie quality fresh. They also did not hold together well at all and lacked crunch.
That said, the staff were accommodating and friendly. I might come again but only for the coffee.

Afternoon delight. Visiting on a cold wet Saturday, I was warmly met by staff and my order taken promptly. I ordered the Omelette special and a coffee. The food is fantastic and the girl behind the coffee machine made one of the best lattes I have had in Hobart. I would definitely return!
Alex G
Great selection for brunch - the bread they serve is delicious! Service was fast and very friendly, and I highly recommend their juices.

Delicious brown rice and haloumi salad

Impressive! Friendly staff. Great coffee. Well thought out menu. Brown rice haloumi salad.....unreal!

Burnt toast tasteless eggs & sour smoothies! & arrogant staff. Good recipe to avoid!

Wonderful cafe. Beautiful food and friendly staff.

Criterion Street Cafe is a popular little spot. Their menu is quite short but the food has been wonderful every time I've eaten there. Hot chocolate in the foreground and chai latte in the background (complete with gorgeous little honey bottle!) Smoked salmon foccacia with red onion, cucumber, tomato and aioli ($12). The smoked salmon in this was really good. A special: Warm salad of field mushrooms, crisp green beans, roast beetroot, rocket and fetta ($14). Delicious and filling, but I was imagining how divine this would be with the Meredith's marinated fetta that we had at Piccalilly ... Criterion Street Cafe website . 0 comments: Post a Comment
