Review The Whaler - Hobart

A Lobster roll seemed impossible to find in Hobart until we stumbled upon this gem. It was delicious and hit the spot. The staff were great, super friendly. Great cocktails and beers available and fun vibe, thoroughly enjoyed and recommend this place.

For a pub this was great, lobster roll was great and Parma with gravy on the side was really good. Pork tacos were so stacked with meat. Sure there are better tacos in some places but these were better than many from some Mexican restaurants I’ve been to

A great little pub by the water. We rolled up at 10:30pm on a Tuesday night and the staff were more than happy to serve us. Good range of beers on tap and a few others in the cabinets. Nice outdoors seating vibe.

Our first stop on arrival in Hobart. Could not go past the lobster roll! Enjoyed afternoon beverage and snacks and was back the following night for after dinner drinks. Worth a visit, staff are friendly and wines are on point!

Lovely pub that has been partially restored from its original decor, but also modernised. There is a great range of craft beers both on tap and available in the fridges, plus standard beers, wines, and spirits. Real fireplace on the inside to keep you warm plus numerous heaters outside. A must attend if you want a great drink and feed in a nice location.

We were only in Hobart 3 days and we came here 3 times. Service was amazing, location is great & the drink selection was perfect! If you're afan of Pet Nat they have a great one! We had to Lobster roll and it was delicious. Always buzzing and full of friendly locals & chatting visitors. Lovely log fire inside too if you want to warm up.

We ordered the chowder. It took almost an hour to be served, it wasn't a chowder and was missing most of the seafood other than a few mussels. Still nice to sit by the fire and relax with some wine, but a pretty disappointing lunch.

The whaler is the sort of pub you seek solace in when it's freezing and is a bit stinky during the summer months. It's part of the old Hobart, the sandstone road that houses a row of old timey cuisines like Thai, Italian and indian. It's hard to tell how local places like these are amongst the tourists. But the atmosphere was good, staff were friendly and it'll probably be here in a couple of hundred years.

It was our last night in Hobart, and somehow again, the struggle was real.It continued, because again we were at a loss as to where to eat on the apple aisle. Only we didn’t want fruit… we wanted DINNER.Most of the bars/eateries in Salamanca Place were geared for friends and locals, not so much for families. We were brought inside places and showed where we would sit… at a table with high-stools… it just wouldn’t work! Baby girl would fall off it, damn it!

The Whaler is a bit of a Hobart icon off Salamanca Place. It’s a very pleasant place to stop for a quick drink after a browse at the famous market. The pub is a little darkish and atmospheric. It’s in a heritage building which has lovely stained glass above the bar. The 60s music on enhanced the atmosphere in early afternoon. The staff were terrific. I’d happily return.

Was once a standout on the sala strip for affordability and food/ambience. Has lost its way a little and prices have gone up a fair bit. Staff turnover has killed the whaler ambience that used to exist but still better than the other loveless options that exist on the strip.

I had a great time at whaler (food/drinks and environment) so I’m not so sure as to why the overall rating is so low!
Came here for dinner/drinks last night and really enjoyed sitting inside close to the open fireplace and chatting away. The music isn’t too loud at all, and the banquet seating/bar stools are cosily set around the fireplace - handy for winter. For food we ordered haloumi/olives to start and for mains the ‘fire pit special’ which was Pinot slow braised beef ragú with papardelle and Parmesan and the “worlds best” steak sandwich as the menu so titled it- this came with mushrooms and truffle butter, side of chips.
I was surprised at how good the food was- good value, decent portion and great taste. The steak sandwich was pretty sensational (that truffle butter was doing heaps!) and my ragú could rival any Italian restaurant!

Drinks were glass of Pinot noir ( TAS ) and a stout by moo brew (TAS) which paired well with our food.

It is a pub and you will get what you pay for. We had burgers and chips washed down with a red and a pint of beer. It is hard to judge a place based on two burgers. The staff were fine and the food good enough to consider returning.

Friendly service and good food. The fried chicken with chips was tasty comfort food that hit the spot, the chicken was super crunchy and fresh, while the sauce combo on top with the coriander and chili made a good contrast of flavors.

We also ordered the Big Whack, man that was delish! The patty was seasoned perfectly, along with the sauces and the abundance of pickles made a great feed. My only regret is that I wish I had ordered the double.

Would eat here again.

Cute pub style bar right by Salamanca Market. Awesome beers on tap, cool vibe, live music on Friday night. Cosy venue, fun crowd. Bit chilly in the wind outside, but inside was great!
