Review The Station Cafe - Hobart

Paul Graham
Another superb brunch at this delightful, friendly & professional restaurant. The food was beautifully prepared & presented. I had poached eggs on some delicious toast with a side salad. My partner chose the savoury muffin. Both dishes were adorned with fresh rose petals on top of the perfectly fresh side salads. Both dishes could not be faulted - neither the attentive staff. We felt so welcomed - from start to finish. As to the views: they are breathtaking. This establishment deserves its accolades. It's even dog-friendly (outside tables). There are some lovely walks through the reserve too!

Great location with enclosed balcony providing spectacular view. Friendly service but the food was average. Overall had a great morning 😊

Nice little cafe at the signal station with brunch and lunch options. Came here for a cup of long black coffee. Coffee was alright, definitely staying for the view. Menu prices are quite high for food, close to and above $30 for brunch food.

This is the most ridiculous ’dessert’ board ever seen - the prices are outrageous. $16 for a bit of cake!! My wife and I shared a scone that sadly was inedible - left a horrible salty after taste. Waiter just said ‘oh’. Coffee was nice. Views were nice. But come on guys this pricing is way past reasonable.

Amazing! Super friendly staff and absolutely amazing cakes and coffee. Best cafe in greater hobart ❤️

Superb location with panoramic 270 degree views over Hobart. The cafe offered a huge range of desserts very nicely presented. We will definitely come back to sample the lunch fare next time. The scones were particularly good!

Nice views and cool wind. Very comfortable and relaxing lunch. We ordered the seafood chowder and the sweet potato chips. They’re so nice. Loving stopping spot with cafe and toilet 👍

Unbelievable. Great view. The food is a bit deceiving my expensive, as they offer traditionally cheap foods (breakfast burger, savoury muffin), but it’s worth every penny, it’s these breakfast classics but turned up to 11. Staff are a bit thinly stretched, but they are good at what they do. Would recommend.

Absolutely love this place - hands down the best breakfast, view and ambience in Hobart. A must do for visitors and locals alike! I had eggs florentine and my dining partners eggs toast and bacon and hash browns and we loved it so much forgot to take a photo! Always great to dine in Scott's establishments (patria della pasta in sandy bay also is really great) - relaxed, humorous and a lovely 'home' feeling - if you had a hilarious guest visiting your home and your home had the best restaurant, best view in Hobart and top service :) thanks!

A kind lady sitting next to me recommend Seafood chowder and a friendly German staff recommended us to have a scone. The super cool owener swung by our table a couple of times to make sure that we were having great time there. (He also played piano - Beethoven for us too). We got the best view, foods and the best service in that place. I will go back next month for dinner again.

We went as a group of 9 for Afternoon tea. We had a booking for High Tea at another establishment that was cancel 18 hours before hand. We frantically called most places and couldn't find anywhere else to accommodate us. From the moment we walked in ( early ) the staff went out of the way to make us feel welcome. While they don't do High Tea as such, we had cheese platters, antipasto platters and dip platters. We then finished with a Devonshire tea. The bubbly was flowing and we stayed way past there closing time. There was no pushing us out the doors and when our husbands arrived to take us home, they were even happy to get them drinks, even though they had closed. All the food was delicious, scones were huge and the coffee hot

Extremely rude and unhelpful service when our group visited. We only wanted hot drinks which are obviously too much hassle for them - or maybe not enough profit for them. Male staff member has no customer service skills and ruined an otherwise lovely visit. Menu very overpriced. We visited against advice of several locals, wish I had listened. Would not recommend the Brasserie, but would recommend the Signal Station and the view.

A lovely cosy place, with fantastic views on a clear day. The food is great - whether you decide to have a feast or afternoon tea and a cheese platter - and the service is excellent. The staff are particularly welcoming of and charming towards children. I can't recommend this place highly enough.

Wasn't a very pleasant visit. Food was nice but not worth the money. Ordered a muffin and coffee. Muffin cost $8.50 on the menu but got charged $10.50 in the end and when I questioned, the owner said they forgot to update the menu and it's not her fault and we still got charged higher price. But whose fault is it? Definitely not customers, why should customer pay for your mistake? $2 extra is nothing but feel like got ripped off. The upside is the view was amazing.

Dropped in this morning for breakfast the service was great and the food and drinks were amazing. One downfall they bill your table as a whole, that's fine BUT maybe just tell your guests before hand not on a card that arrives with the bill at the end. Maybe offer to create seperate bills as it's 2017 and most people only use eftpos. One person had to pay for the whole bill then we had to drive to the local shop at the end of the street get cash out then drive all the way back to give the cash to the person who had to pay for the bill in full. Phew don't know if it was worth all that trouble

We had an absolutely fabulous breakfast, the poached eggs were perfect, the coffee was excellent , the service was great and the White chocolate peanut butter truffles at the counter were scrumptious! I don't think you can get a better breakfast with an amazing view to top it off! A must do, 15 mins from central Hobart...

Had the fabulous mushroom breakfast with garlic aioli and home made fig oil. Delish. Highly recommended. Fun friendly staff and dog lover... regulars paradise I'm sure. they're also open Friday night's

Another amazing meal and tremendous views, the best in Hobart, yes better than the Mountain. Love the Staff, their wit and coolness in the face of a busy morning, and changing orders! Cheers, thanks again.

Family gathering booked several weeks ago for Mothers Day. Arrived expecting the usual menu, but found they had a set menu $65 perhead. There had been no mention of this at booking. No enquiry was made by staff about dietary requirements, and staff just started serving. 1 member of the group didnt eat at all however still charged $65 for the seat. On top of that they charged a 10% surcharge for it being a weekend. Not impressed at all. Members of the group said the food was quite ok but for $65 wasnt a lot of it.

Not sure where some of the previous correspondents visited. I found the staff welcoming and efficient, the food well prepared, presented and tasty. And did I mention the spectacular views? Highly recommended.

What a great impromptu lunch we had today here. The service from Scott and Maree was outstanding, the food amazing, views to die for and and the take away scones award winning!! Thanks for a memorable day

One of the most amazing places to grab breakfast and such a nice view the food and coffee is spot on and very consistent.

Dropped in for a glass of Wine the other day and once the wonderful man who seated us at our table realised it was my birthday, he served me the best glass of Red available (and only charged us the house-wine price). The food is incredible, the service is second to none and the VIEW is picture perfect. I absolutely adore this place and I am looking forward to visiting you again when I'm back in Tasmania. Thank you so much, you really made my day :)

Beautiful food, wine, service and of course that view. A wonderful way to breakfast with friends

Such a quaint venue in a stunning location. The food was beautifully presented and delicious. We had the Breakfast Bruschetta and the Benedict. Would love to give this a 4 star Rating but poor coffee in a restaurant is like a pub with no beer. Another thing, we don't mind paying a Sunday surcharge, but did not see anything advertising this, it was just on the bill.

I’m an idyllic location what used to be the signal mans cottage is now a cafe.
It’s an odd set up a bit casual, a bit formal.
The welcome was curt and oddly stilted,it felt as if we were intruders rather than valued paying clients.
Let’s be honest the views are the only reason to go to this cafe and the table arrangements are odd to say the least.
But
There are so many gluten free options that all is forgiven and the gluten free scones- OMG!!!! Fresh, light, delicious. Raspberry jam and fresh cream oh my!
The coffee is very good too.
Overlook the service which is sited and strange and go for the scones!!! And the views of course.

I really enjoyed the view, the friendly staff and other customers who were also in awe of the view, food and a rainbow that graced us today. I had scallops and sesame buttered greens a glass of 42 degrees sparkling and my friend had a house red and lamb tacos $91

A perfect rest stop when reaching the peak of Mount Nelson: views, food, drinks and a bathroom. I was recommended the lemonade scones and this was so warm, fluffy and lemony, it was so lovely to just sit, relax and enjoy the peace and beauty of Hobart with something sweet. There is indoor and outdoor seating available but fingers crossed you get seated near the window!

Our recent visit to the Signal Station Brasserie was at morning tea time. It was a cool autumn morning and we were delighted to walk in to a country-style lounge room complete with a fireplace. The place was very inviting as it was warm and toasty.

When visiting Signal Station Brasserie ensure you allow plenty of time. This is a great café where you just take your time and enjoy the good views. This family-friendly café is full of fresh air and gorgeous sunshine. It is an ideal scenic place for visitors and it is definitely high on my list of places to return to with friends.

I couldn't speak for the main dishes here, but can certainly vouch for a Devonshire tea or muffins on a lovely sunny afternoon. Lemonade scones hot out of the oven just like nan used to make, with deliciously bright raspberry jam and cream, are a real treat and becoming rarer these days. Coffee was, however, a bit weak (I'd go for an extra shot), but the staff were very warm and attentive.

The signal station has a chequered history like so many historic buildings converted to restaurants in Tasmania. The last time I visited it was a simple cafe with pies and ice creams. Now in this latest incarnation they've created a stunning verandah area with seemingly invisible glass looking out upon the spectacular Derwent Estuary. The aim seems to be more up-market with limited seating space, and while you'll pay a few dollars more than some other Hobart restaurants, those who've been to 'Sky High' on Mount Dandenong will laugh at how much better placed this city is to offer such experiences.

Had Brunch yesterday with friends from Melbourne, the missus had booked a table on the glass enclosed verandah and the views were outstanding, the service was enthusiastic and attentive and the breakfast menu was varied enough to suit most palates. All ordered meals were spot on with a special mention going to the eggs benedict with salmon and the coffees
It was a very pleasant morning and looking at the views thru visitors eyes really brought home how lucky we Tasmanians are. Will definitely return

Lovely view and the food was fine but it could be so much better. Get Gordon Ramsay in for some tough love. If paying $90 for 2 mains and a glass of wine (inc the 10% Saturday surcharge) I would expect a bit more finesse and attention to detail with the decor. Maybe even tablecloths. We didnt order dessert (or 'sweeties' as quaintly/cornily offered)- but $14.50 for a small creme brulee that we saw seemed a bit rich. Also the soup of the day didn't sound exotic enough for the $25 price tag but suggest you try it and comment. Get rid of the cobwebs and find another way to keep the flies out. Yes the lady did apologise for the flies as they are in the bush - well really a leafy reserve in suburbia - but very distracting to have 7 huge blowflies crawling up the window competing for the wonderful view. Suggest go for a coffee and enjoy the view and have lunch at a better value place down the hill. Having said that the food was good and well presented but the whole experience could be so much better with a lot more attention to detail. Good wine list and quite well priced by the bottle but some of the glass prices are relatvely high.

Came here for a coffee (nice long black) at 2.30 on a Friday arvo and the place was packed. Good service and polite enough for staff under pressure.
View Amazing.
Free Wifi.

Food was ok, service was terrible. Went here for lunch, the food was ok - 2 out of our 3 meals were good but the 3rd had honey drizzled all over it and it really just ruined the dish. Our waitress was lovely but the woman who "greeted us" (stared at us, demanded to know if we had a booking, groaned like we were wasting her time when we said we didnt) and the man who seemed to be the manager both have no idea and need crash courses in customer service. Coffee was bad as well but that's to be expected.

The manager is the weakest link.
- During one visit he refused to serve us take-away coffees, saying they were "too busy" (there were still tables available);
- Another time he refused to allow us to order from the children's menu because we didn't have any children with us (they had few vegetarian options and all options were overpriced. Our simple request for chips - which they had - was denied);
- His coffee making skills leave a lot to be desired, perhaps a short-course would help (or hire a friendly barista?);
- He has a terribly hostile attitude.
In short, you're better off taking a picnic and soaking up the beautiful Hobart vistas on the park benches 5 metres away.
One star.

Cute little place with an amazing view. If you just want to waste away a Sunday afternoon, come up here for the spectacular view, enjoy some scones with Jane & cream, and maybe also grab a hot chocolate. Sit out on the balcony and watch the world go by with the Kenny G style music playing in the background.

Been here a number of times for lunch since moving to Hobart. First off, the views are amazing and definutely worth popping up to see them if you're new to town. As for food; the traditional Caesar salad with chicken was lovely and fresh, presented in a modern deconstructed style. I'm not usually one to like Caesar salads due to the heavy dressing but I would recommend this one.
Morrocan chicken quinoa salad: first time I had it, WOW. I finished it and was left wanting more. It has a subtle savory morocon spice on chicken pieces and olives, counteracted with sweet explosions of dried cranberries and roasted pumpkin. The quinoa bulks it up and is a popular ingredient in restaurants these days, however, the last time I had this salad it was 80% quinoa and my companion had the same issue. Maybe just a bad day but it completely ruined the dish for me. This salad requires the right balance of all the ingredients to really wow you, but if you get that, it's a definite must pick.
I have found the staff to be lovely each time I have visited. They do seem run off their feet though and I have had to wait quite a while for them to take orders or particularly for food to arrive. Lucky for them I used this time to sample the sparkling whites which I thoroughly enjoyed. Over all, perhaps hit and miss with this place but you need to try it at least once for the ambiance!

Apparently it's under new management now- quite fancy. Views are amazing and there's lots of different seating options which I loved (inside/outside, couches etc). However- whats more important- the service was terrible, grumpy staff and the food was worse!! Poached eggs were almost raw and blueberry pancakes were so tough you could barely cut through them with s knife!!! How is that even possible?! Very disappointed because the setting is do beautiful I wanted to love it but I won't go back.

This place is worth visiting just for the view! It's unreal. The poached eggs were pretty enjoyable, the cured salmon was bang on. Judging by the rest of the menu I'd say the food is all pretty decent, honest food. Nothing that will blow your socks off, but it's only a casual little place. Staff were quite friendly. Definitely worth checking out.

It looks super modern and in my opinion it takes North Hobart up a level in the style department. Three hungry ladies went for dinner last week and right away I felt like I was in the right place. We started a little untraditionally with pizza for entree. Hey, carbs are my thing. The menu is very vast and it all sounds mouthwatering. We finally opted for the meatball pizza. I think we made a good choice, check it. Delicious thin, crisp base with fresh, tasty toppings. Yum. I decided to back track for mains and went for a selection of antipasti. Deep breath... Eggplant fritti with blue cheese and honey dressing, three cheese and wild mushroom arancini, pork belly with gorgonzola and fig jam AND lightly crumbed prawn skewers with salsa Verde. It was simple, great food. The pork belly was my highlight. The bite of the blue cheese and the sweetness of the jam just balanced it out stunningly. My lady friends both opted for the fettucine alla boscaiola. Equally delicious. If you can't tell I enjoyed Capital, like, a lot. One thing I was very impressed with was the service. Personally I haven't always experienced great service in Hobart. I don't feel as though its a predominant feature of a restaurant here but after you experience great service it really highlights how important it actually is. Try Capital. Over order. Enjoy, amici. Now for breakfast. We headed to The Signal Station Brasserie on Mount Nelson to admire the view and sample the breakfast menu. The building is slightly dated but who cares when you can look outside to this. The menu is pretty standard breakfast fare. The time old debate of sweet or savory wa
